01
Key takeaways
The encounter rewards patience and movement more than extended close-range trading.
01
Optional fight
Ekzykes is not a mandatory story boss. Leave the area if the Scarlet Rot attacks are overwhelming and return after improving your equipment or survivability.
02
Fight from the open field
The battlefield allows mounted repositioning, so use Torrent to escape the rot cloud and broad attacks instead of trying to block every hit at close range.
03
Watch the breath attack
The Scarlet Rot breath is the defining threat. When Ekzykes begins a breath animation, move laterally and create distance rather than retreating in a straight line toward the dragon.
04
Dragon Communion reward
The main reason to complete the fight is access to Ekzykes's Decay, a Dragon Communion incantation that applies Scarlet Rot pressure at range.
05
Do not linger beneath the boss
The safest openings are short. Attack after a completed animation, then move away before the dragon's body, wings, or lingering rot effect closes the space.

Ekzykes overview
Ekzykes is an optional dragon boss encountered in southern Caelid, close to the .
Ekzykes is found on the road approaching the Cathedral of Dragon Communion in southern Caelid. The encounter is not required to complete Elden Ring, so a player who is underprepared can leave the area, improve their equipment or attributes, and return later without abandoning a mandatory story objective. The fight takes place in the open world rather than inside a traditional sealed dungeon, which gives a major role in both approach and survival.
The boss is distinctive because its attacks are strongly associated with Scarlet Rot. Ekzykes can cover parts of the battlefield with a damaging rot cloud, making the space around its body unsafe for longer than a normal dragon attack would. The practical result is that standing directly beneath the dragon for extended periods is riskier than it is against many other large field bosses; the player needs to read the attack, leave the contaminated area, and re-enter when the opening is clear.
A mounted approach is generally the safest way to control distance. Torrent can circle the dragon, carry the player away from the breath attack, and help close the gap after Ekzykes finishes a long animation. The open terrain also supports ranged attacks and repeated hit-and-retreat tactics, although the player must still watch for sweeping wings, lunges, stomps, and attacks that cover a broad area around the dragon.
Defeating Ekzykes matters primarily for Dragon Communion builds. The victory provides a Dragon Heart and unlocks at the , giving the player access to a Scarlet Rot breath incantation. Players who are not using dragon incantations can skip the encounter, while players planning a status-focused or arcane-oriented build have a stronger reason to defeat it before investing in the spell.

Encounter phases and attack patterns

Story spoilers ahead. This section covers the character’s later arc and outcomes.
1
Grounded opening
Starts: The fight begins when the player approaches Ekzykes in the open field.
Ekzykes uses the space around its body to threaten close-range players with bites, stomps, wing sweeps and body movement. Circle at a distance and wait for a completed attack before riding in for a short punish.
Bite and head lungeTell Ekzykes lowers or turns its head toward the player before snapping forward.Answer Move to the side rather than backing away in a straight line, then strike the head or retreat once the bite finishes.
StompTell The dragon raises a leg and shifts its weight before striking the ground.Answer Ride away from the footfall or pass beyond the impact zone; do not remain underneath waiting for a second hit.
Wing sweepTell Ekzykes pivots its body and brings a wing across the surrounding ground.Answer Create space with Torrent and re-enter only after the sweep has completed.
Keep the camera far enough back to see the dragon's legs and wings. A close camera can hide the start of a stomp or sweep.
Use short attack windows instead of treating the dragon's idle movement as permission to commit to a full combo.
2
Scarlet Rot breath
Starts: Ekzykes begins a breath animation while grounded or after repositioning.
The breath attack is the encounter's signature hazard. It can contaminate the ground and punish a player who tries to stay beneath the dragon, so the correct response is immediate lateral movement and a full disengage from the cloud.
Scarlet Rot breathTell Ekzykes raises its head and releases a broad reddish cloud across the battlefield.Answer Turn away from the cloud, ride laterally and continue moving until outside its spread; return only after the lingering hazard has cleared enough space.
Do not assume that reaching the dragon's feet makes the breath safe. The affected area can make the space beneath the boss the worst place to stand.
Save stamina and avoid stopping to heal inside the cloud. Heal after you have created clear distance.
3
Airborne repositioning
Starts: Ekzykes takes to the air or shifts position after a ground exchange.
When airborne, the dragon can attack from a wider angle and make the player's previous position unsafe. Prioritize tracking the landing point over dealing damage during the flight.
Aerial approachTell Ekzykes rises and changes position before descending toward the player.Answer Stay mounted, keep moving, and avoid the landing area; punish the recovery after the dragon has returned to the ground.
Aerial breathTell The dragon's flight is followed by a breath release directed across the field.Answer Move perpendicular to the direction of the cloud and continue until the attack has passed rather than trying to sprint under the dragon.
The open arena is an advantage during this portion. There is no reason to corner yourself against terrain while waiting for Ekzykes to land.
Ranged players can attack during a safe recovery, but preserving a clear escape route is more important than forcing one extra hit.

Begin on Torrent and keep enough distance to see Ekzykes's head, legs and wings at the same time. Circle rather than standing directly beneath the dragon, and approach only after a bite, stomp, sweep or breath animation has finished. The moment the Scarlet Rot cloud appears, leave its area instead of trying to trade damage inside it. After Ekzykes lands or completes a long attack, make one short attack sequence and disengage; repeating this rhythm is safer than remaining at the dragon's feet. Ranged attacks can reduce the need to enter the rot zone, while melee players should prioritize mobility and attack the head only when the recovery is clear.
Weaknesses
The head is a useful target when Ekzykes finishes a bite, breath or other committed animation.
The boss is vulnerable to punish windows after large attacks, but the exact numerical damage modifiers are not verified here.

StrategySpoilers
01
Reach the encounter area
Approach the road near the cathedral
Travel through southern Caelid toward the Cathedral of Dragon Communion and enter the open ground on the nearby road. Ekzykes is encountered outside rather than behind a dungeon doorway, so identify a safe route around the arena before starting the fight.
Location: Southern Caelid, near the Cathedral of Dragon Communion
TipKeep Torrent available before engaging so the first breath attack does not catch you on foot.
Watch outDo not begin the fight while trapped against the cathedral, roadside terrain or another obstacle; the open field is your main defensive resource.
02
Create safe positioning
Mount Torrent and establish a wide circle
Use the open battlefield to circle Ekzykes at a distance that keeps the dragon's head and wings visible. Avoid attacking immediately if the boss is already turning or preparing a breath animation; spend the opening seconds learning its direction and preserving room to escape.
Location: Ekzykes's outdoor arena
TipA broad circle gives you more time to react than riding tightly around the dragon's legs.
Watch outIf the camera loses the dragon's head, move away first and restore visibility before attacking.
03
Deal safe damage
Punish a completed ground attack
Wait for a bite, stomp or wing sweep to finish, then ride in for a brief attack against an exposed target. Leave before Ekzykes can recover and turn the exchange into a close-range trade, especially if the dragon's body is already beginning to pivot.
Location: Open field around Ekzykes
TipThe head is a valuable target after a committed head attack, but a single safe punish is better than a greedy combo.
Watch outDo not treat a stationary moment beneath the dragon as a guaranteed opening; the next stomp or sweep can cover the same space.
04
Avoid Scarlet Rot buildup and damage
Escape the Scarlet Rot breath
When Ekzykes raises its head and releases the reddish breath cloud, turn laterally and ride away until you are clearly outside the affected area. Do not wait beneath the dragon for the cloud to end, because the contaminated ground can continue to punish you after the visible release.
Location: Ekzykes's arena
TipUse the attack as a repositioning signal: once the cloud has spread, move to a new angle rather than returning to the same spot.
Watch outHealing inside or beside the cloud can fail because the hazard continues while you are stationary.
05
Survive aerial attacks
Track the airborne repositioning
If Ekzykes takes flight, stop trying to force melee damage and watch where the dragon is moving. Stay mounted, keep travelling across the field, and avoid the landing or breath path before approaching during the recovery after it returns to the ground.
Location: Open field near the Cathedral of Dragon Communion
TipThe arena is large enough to keep moving; use that space instead of retreating toward a wall or structure.
Watch outReturning to the dragon before its landing animation and follow-up attack have ended can place you directly in the impact zone.
06
Reduce the boss's health safely
Repeat short punish-and-retreat cycles
Continue circling, wait for a committed animation, attack briefly, and disengage. If Scarlet Rot buildup becomes dangerous, prioritize reaching clean ground and curing or recovering rather than attempting to finish Ekzykes during the same exchange.
Location: Ekzykes's outdoor arena
TipA ranged attack or mounted weapon is preferable to a longer stationary combo because it preserves an escape route.
Watch outThe fight has no requirement to be rushed; most failed attempts come from staying in the hazard or beneath the body too long.
07
Claim the Dragon Communion reward
Collect the rewards after victory
After Ekzykes is defeated, collect the Dragon Heart and use the Cathedral of Dragon Communion to access the boss-associated Dragon Communion reward. The encounter is complete when the boss is dead; there is no separate mandatory quest step attached to the fight.
Location: Cathedral of Dragon Communion, southern Caelid
TipReturn to the cathedral after the battle if the incantation is not immediately part of your current menu view.
Watch outThe fight itself is optional, but leaving without checking the Dragon Communion altar can make it easy to overlook what the Dragon Heart unlocked.

Weaknesses and damage
Spoilers
Story spoilers ahead. This section covers the character’s later arc and outcomes.
Weaknesses and damageSpoilers
Strengths
The Scarlet Rot breath controls a large area and can remain dangerous after the initial release.
Ekzykes's size gives its stomps, wing sweeps and body movement broad reach around the player.
The open arena does not make the boss harmless: careless positioning can still leave the player inside a lingering hazard or beneath a follow-up attack.
Weaknesses
Ekzykes has long committed animations that create clear punish windows once the player has moved outside the attack's coverage.
The open field supports mounted hit-and-run tactics, allowing the player to choose when to enter melee range.
The head is exposed after several committed attacks, making it a more useful target than repeatedly striking the body from an unsafe position.
Best uses
Choose a mounted melee approach when mobility and repeated short openings are more important than burst damage.
Choose ranged attacks when the breath cloud is the main source of failed attempts and the build can maintain distance.
Choose the encounter for Dragon Communion progression; players uninterested in Ekzykes's Decay can defer the fight without delaying the main story.

Failure conditions
Spoilers
Story spoilers ahead. This section covers the character’s later arc and outcomes.
Player deathThe encounter is lost when the player dies. Because Ekzykes is an optional open-world boss, the player can return to the arena and attempt it again.
Remaining inside Scarlet Rot breathThe breath cloud can inflict severe status pressure and damage if the player hesitates. Escape laterally and heal only after reaching clear ground.
Greedy close-range attackingContinuing a combo beneath the dragon can overlap with a stomp, bite or wing sweep. Use one short punish and disengage.
Losing sight of the dragonA poor camera angle can hide the head or wings and make the next attack difficult to read. Move away until the boss is visible again.
Running out of safe arena spaceRetreating toward the cathedral or roadside obstacles reduces the room needed to evade the breath and aerial attacks. Begin the fight from the open field.
On failure
There is no separate quest-failure state associated with Ekzykes in the supplied material; the practical reset condition is player death.

Ekzykes belongs to the diseased dragon imagery associated with Caelid. The boss's breath is not merely a visual variation on ordinary dragon fire: it ties the encounter directly to the region's defining affliction and explains why the battlefield becomes progressively harder to occupy when the player ignores the cloud.
The reward, Ekzykes's Decay, extends that connection beyond the boss arena. turns the powers of dragons into incantations for the Tarnished, and this particular reward preserves Ekzykes's rot-focused identity as a usable spell. The fight therefore links a regional monster, a local place of worship and a distinct branch of Elden Ring's magic system.
