About this guide
Shadow of the Erdtree content. Major location, character and reward spoilers follow.
Overview
Castle Ensis is a legacy dungeon in the Realm of Shadow, positioned in the north-eastern part of Gravesite Plain. It is the fortified estate of Rellana, Twin Moon Knight, and forms the principal route from the opening plain into Scadu Altus. The castle is not simply the central fortress visible from the road. Its playable scope includes the approach from the Ellac Greatbridge, the outer fortifications, the checkpoint, the church and residential buildings, the upper castle, the Moongazing Grounds and the route to Rellana’s arena. The neighbouring Fog Rift Fort, Fifth Belfry and wider Gravesite Plain are separate locations, although they are visually and geographically connected to Castle Ensis.

Named subareas and internal landmarks
Some names are formal Site of Grace names, while others are descriptive names used by guides and players for visually distinct sections. The game does not provide a separate map label for every room, tower or courtyard.

Reaching Castle Ensis
Castle Ensis is encountered naturally while travelling across Gravesite Plain. From the initial Realm of Shadow area, follow the main road north-east towards the large bridge. The route passes through the open plain and approaches the castle from the south-west.
Castle Front is especially useful as a recovery point because the bridge approach can be crossed quickly after death. The Checkpoint Grace is the important internal checkpoint and should be activated before attempting the central courtyard and Moonrithyll section.
A practical route is
- 01Travel north-east from the early Gravesite Plain area.
- 02Pass the Three-Path Cross area if approaching from the central road.
- 03Continue towards the Castle Front Site of Grace.
- 04Cross the Ellac Greatbridge.
- 05Follow the fortified road towards the first castle defences.
- 06Activate Castle Ensis Checkpoint.
- 07Continue through the castle, collecting the side-room rewards before climbing towards the upper fortress.
- 08Reach Castle-Lord’s Chamber and then Ensis Moongazing Grounds.
- 09Enter Rellana’s arena.
Returning from Scadu Altus
After defeating Rellana, the route beyond the boss arena opens into Scadu Altus. The castle can still be revisited from the Scadu Altus side, and the upper areas remain accessible for missed items.
---
This creates two useful exploration states
| Progression state | What it allows |
|---|---|
| Before Rellana | Most equipment, collectibles and side routes can be obtained |
| After Rellana | Entry into Scadu Altus and easier access to the rear route |
| After advancing wider DLC storylines | Some NPC summon and dialogue states may change |
Rellana, Twin Moon Knight
Rellana is the lord of Castle Ensis and its final boss. She is presented as a Carian royal who abandoned her former homeland and followed Messmer into the Realm of Shadow. The castle’s combination of Carian sorcery, enchanted knights and Messmer’s military presence reflects that divided allegiance.
Her relationship with the castle is represented by several items and visual details:
Rellana’s position is not merely that of a generic fortress commander. Castle Ensis functions as her personal stronghold, while Moonrithyll acts as a chamberlain or devoted guardian.
Moonrithyll, Carian Knight
Moonrithyll is a hostile NPC encountered in the central castle. The duel takes place after the route passes through several ranged enemies and pages. Moonrithyll guards the building containing Rellana’s Cameo and drops Moonrithyll’s Knight Sword when defeated.
Moonrithyll is more dangerous than the ordinary soldiers because of the combination of a large weapon, strong melee pressure and Carian-themed attacks. The surrounding enemies can make the encounter harder than the duel itself, so clearing the nearby casters and ranged attackers first is worthwhile.
Needle Knight Leda
Needle Knight Leda may appear as a summon option for the Rellana fight, depending on the player’s progress through her quest. Her summon sign is not a permanent feature of every playthrough. It can disappear if the player advances certain parts of the wider DLC story before returning to Castle Ensis.
Leda’s presence should therefore be treated as progression-dependent rather than as a fixed resident of the castle.
Hornsent
Hornsent can be encountered outside the upper castle after reaching the Ensis Moongazing Grounds area. His dialogue and rewards are connected to the wider NPC storyline rather than to a self-contained Castle Ensis quest.
His location is particularly easy to miss because he is not part of the main interior route. If he is relevant to your playthrough, speak to him before making major progress through the DLC’s central storyline.
Factions
The alliance is not completely harmonious in presentation. The castle’s military occupation bears Messmer’s colours, while its strongest magical and aristocratic identity remains Carian.

Castle Front
Castle Front is the main external checkpoint for approaching the dungeon. It is located beyond the Ellac Greatbridge and is technically outside the castle proper. It is useful for:
Castle Ensis Checkpoint
The Checkpoint Grace lies in the early interior section of the dungeon. It is the most important rest point before the central castle.
The cookbook is found in a chest in the building associated with the checkpoint and the rooftop cross. It unlocks the recipes for Royal Magic Grease and Drawstring Royal Magic Grease.
Castle-Lord’s Chamber
This Site of Grace is situated in the upper castle section, close to the final approach. It is the ideal preparation point for:
Ensis Moongazing Grounds
This Grace lies outside or just beyond the final interior route, near the approach to Rellana’s arena and the wider exit towards Scadu Altus. It also serves as the location from which the player can find story-associated NPCs such as Hornsent.
The exact classification of this area varies between map and wiki conventions, but it is functionally part of the Castle Ensis end route.
---
1. Cross the bridge and reach the checkpoint
From Castle Front, cross the Ellac Greatbridge and follow the road towards the castle. The first enemies are mainly Messmer troops, with larger threats positioned to discourage a direct sprint.
At the castle entrance, look for the route leading towards the checkpoint. Activate Castle Ensis Checkpoint as soon as possible. The building and rooftop around the Grace contain the first major optional rewards.
The Scadutree Fragment is especially valuable because the Realm of Shadow’s difficulty is balanced around the use of Scadutree Blessings.
2. Take the lower route and search the outer rooms
From the checkpoint, the direct gate is not the only route. Follow the lower path beside the closed gate and descend through the opening. This leads through a lower section containing hostile dogs and access to side platforms.
This section rewards careful exploration rather than simply following the central road. Search ledges, rooftops and side rooms before climbing. Several materials and consumables are placed away from the obvious route, and one of the castle’s Starlight Shards is found through an off-route rooftop approach.
The lower route eventually reconnects with the upper castle road.
3. Obtain Milady
When the route rises towards the first major tower, turn towards the turret and climb to its upper level. A chest at the top contains Milady, a light greatsword introduced in the DLC.
Milady is one of the most useful early Castle Ensis acquisitions because it is available before the main boss and offers a fast, mobile moveset. It can also be paired with the nearby Wing Stance Ash of War, although Wing Stance itself is found later in the dungeon.
4. Defeat the central courtyard enemies
Continue across the castle’s bridges and walkways. Pages and sorcerers occupy high positions and can attack while the player is dealing with ground troops. Prioritise ranged enemies when possible.
Do not assume that every apparent dead end is empty. Castle Ensis frequently places an item on a ledge below the main walkway, with the intended route requiring a controlled drop.
5. Fight Moonrithyll, Carian Knight
After the page and sorcerer section, Moonrithyll appears near the next building. Clear the nearby enemies before beginning the duel if possible.
Rellana’s Cameo is inside the building Moonrithyll guards, placed on an altar or table at the rear. It is not obtained from Moonrithyll himself. The talisman rewards maintaining a stance before executing an attack, making it particularly relevant to stance-based weapon skills such as Wing Stance.
The nearby side route contains
6. Search the rooftops for Glintblade Trio
After opening the next gate, take the side route down and climb through the rooftops. The corpse holding Glintblade Trio is positioned on a lower roof or ledge and is easy to miss if you stay on the main staircase.
This is one of the clearest examples of Castle Ensis rewarding vertical exploration rather than linear progress.
The intended route involves
- 01Opening the gate.
- 02Dropping to the side platform.
- 03Climbing the ladders.
- 04Defeating the page and noble sorcerer.
- 05Crossing or dropping across the rooftops.
- 06Reaching the corpse with Glintblade Trio.
7. Collect the Imbued Sword Key
The upper castle contains a tower chest with an Imbued Sword Key. Search the side tower near the next Black Knight rather than continuing immediately towards the boss route.
The key is a fixed pickup and is not a random drop. It is useful for later teleporter access elsewhere in the Realm of Shadow and should be collected before leaving if you are following a completionist route.
8. Find Wing Stance
Near Castle-Lord’s Chamber, explore the eastern balcony and the structures behind the wall. A short platforming route leads to a high lookout position containing Ash of War: Wing Stance.
Wing Stance is the castle’s most thematically connected skill. It works especially naturally with light greatswords such as Milady and complements the castle’s focus on elegant Carian swordsmanship.
Because this route involves drops and narrow ledges, collect it before entering Rellana’s arena.
9. Prepare at Ensis Moongazing Grounds
Rellana uses both physical and magical damage, so a balanced defensive setup is usually more useful than specialising entirely in one resistance. The Spelldrake Talisman +3, available in the wider castle route according to walkthrough directories, is a particularly relevant defensive option for the fight.
---
Rellana is the main boss of Castle Ensis and the encounter that gates the route to Scadu Altus.
The most important practical advice is to avoid being trapped against the arena walls. Rellana’s sword chains cover considerable distance, and her magical attacks are designed to punish panic rolls. Learn the difference between attacks that require a single roll and attacks that continue into a delayed second or third strike.
Rellana’s Remembrance can be exchanged for one of her unique rewards at the Roundtable Hold’s Finger Reader, including her paired sword armament or a related sorcery. The exact exchange options are not physically located in Castle Ensis.
---
The following directory separates fixed pickups from boss rewards and enemy drops. It is based on the Castle Ensis lists and walkthrough evidence consulted, but minor consumable placements can vary in how individual map projects classify the castle’s boundary.
Weapons
Shields
Upgrade materials
The presence of some Smithing Stone grades in enemy-drop directories should not be confused with fixed chest or corpse placements. Enemy drops are probabilistic, while named weapons, talismans, cookbooks and Scadutree Fragments are fixed acquisitions.
Enemy-associated drops
Depending on the enemy and drop table, Castle Ensis enemies can provide items such as:
These should be treated as random or enemy-specific drops, not guaranteed items for every playthrough.
---
Enemy-associated drops
Named encounters
Ordinary enemy types
The castle’s enemy composition changes by section. Messmer soldiers dominate the approach and military areas, while Carian knights and sorcerers become more prominent near Rellana’s personal quarters and the upper route.
---
Vertical routes
Castle Ensis is designed around ledges, towers and rooftop shortcuts. If a platform appears to lead nowhere, look down before turning back. Several of the dungeon’s best rewards are placed below the obvious route.
Ranged ambushes
Pages and sorcerers are often placed above the player’s eye line. They can interrupt a fight with ground enemies, particularly around the central courtyard and upper buildings. Use a bow, spell, throwing knife or quick rush to remove them before engaging stronger melee targets.
The checkpoint building
The building around Castle Ensis Checkpoint is more important than it first appears. It contains the cookbook, lies near a Miquella’s Cross and acts as a compact hub between the lower route and the castle’s main ascent.
Missable progression states
The main fixed rewards of Castle Ensis are not generally lost merely by defeating Rellana. However:
There is no evidence that the castle itself becomes permanently inaccessible after the boss.
---
Fast route to Milady
This route lets a new DLC character obtain a light greatsword without defeating Moonrithyll or Rellana.
Fast route to Milady: steps
- 01Reach Castle Ensis Checkpoint.
- 02Follow the lower route back towards the tower section.
- 03Climb the turret.
- 04Open the chest containing Milady.
- 05Return to the main route.
Completionist route

Pre-boss checklist
---
Castle Ensis is strongly associated with Carian identity despite its occupation by Messmer’s forces. Its name, Ensis, is Latin for “sword” and is also associated with the sword-shaped constellation of Orion. The name is appropriate for a castle centred on Rellana’s swordsmanship and the legacy of Carian knightly arms.
The location also reinforces the contrast between Rellana and her sister, Rennala. Rellana’s abandoned homeland and loyalty to Messmer are expressed through the castle’s architecture, its Carian defenders and its mixture of moonlit and military imagery. Rellana’s Cameo and Moonrithyll’s Knight Sword provide the clearest item-based evidence of personal devotion and retained Carian tradition.
The castle’s gameplay structure mirrors this history. The lower approach is a military occupation, the central buildings contain the remnants of a noble household and the upper route culminates in a ruler who has made the fortress her final station.

Is Castle Front part of Castle Ensis?
Functionally, it is the entrance area for Castle Ensis. Geographically and in some wiki classifications, Castle Front is a separate location outside the dungeon proper. It should be listed as the external approach rather than as an interior subarea.
Can I get Milady before defeating Rellana?
Yes. Milady is in a chest at the top of a castle tower and can be collected during the normal dungeon exploration route.
Do I need to defeat Moonrithyll to reach Rellana?
No. Moonrithyll is an important optional hostile NPC, but he is not the main boss. Defeating him is worthwhile because he drops Moonrithyll’s Knight Sword and opens access to the nearby Rellana’s Cameo area.
Can I summon Needle Knight Leda?
Potentially. Her summon sign is affected by the state of her quest. If it is absent, the most likely explanation is progression in the wider DLC storyline rather than a missing item or hidden switch.
What does defeating Rellana unlock?
It opens the route from Castle Ensis into Scadu Altus and provides the Remembrance of the Twin Moon Knight.
Is Fog Rift Fort part of the castle?
No. Fog Rift Fort is a neighbouring location to the west. It belongs to the same broad Gravesite Plain landscape but should not be merged into Castle Ensis’s directory.
