About this guide
Scope: Elden Ring base game. Castle Morne is treated here as the complete Castle Morne dungeon complex, including the fortress, its exterior approaches, the area behind the castle and the southern beach containing the Leonine Misbegotten arena. The wider Weeping Peninsula, Bridge of Sacrifice and Revenger’s Shack are neighbouring or quest-connected locations, not parts of Castle Morne itself.
Overview
Castle Morne is the major legacy-style dungeon at the southern end of the Weeping Peninsula. It is not a full legacy dungeon on the scale of Stormveil Castle, but it is considerably more involved than a simple fort. The site combines a fortified entrance, a crowded inner courtyard, elevated ramparts, a ruined rear approach, a lower gaol, a beachside boss arena and several branching routes.
The castle has fallen to its own oppressed servants. Misbegotten have rebelled against the castle’s human garrison, while Castellan Edgar remains behind, refusing to abandon his post until the stolen Grafted Blade Greatsword is recovered. This makes Castle Morne both a combat area and the central location in the Irina and Edgar questline.
Geography and boundaries
Castle Morne stands on a rocky promontory overlooking the southern sea. Its most recognisable exterior feature is the enormous tower rising above the fortress. The approach road runs south through the Weeping Peninsula and ends at the castle gate, where a giant archer guards the entrance.
The location should be understood as a connected dungeon rather than just the visible central keep. Its playable area includes:
The wider southern peninsula is not part of the castle. In particular, the Bridge of Sacrifice, the road north of the castle, the surrounding coastal cliffs and Revenger’s Shack belong to other location groupings, even though they are connected to Castle Morne through quests or geography.
Named areas within the Castle Morne complex
Some of these names are Site of Grace names or descriptive map labels rather than formal architectural names. They are retained because they are useful for navigation and match the game’s checkpoint structure.

Access and recommended routes
Reaching the castle
From Limgrave, cross the Bridge of Sacrifice into the Weeping Peninsula and follow the main road south. The road eventually reaches the castle entrance. The giant outside the gate fires large arrows from a distance, so approaching directly on foot can be dangerous.
A mounted approach is usually the simplest option:
The giant is not the castle’s main boss, and defeating it is not required to enter or complete the dungeon.
Suggested first exploration route
For a thorough first visit, use this order:
This route avoids treating the visible tower as the entire dungeon. Much of Castle Morne’s useful loot is placed on side platforms and lower routes rather than on the most obvious staircase.

Main landmarks and buildings
Castle gate and outer approach
The gate is guarded by a giant armed with a greatbow. The giant’s attacks can knock the player down or interrupt attempts to approach the entrance. It is possible to bypass the enemy, but defeating it gives a safer route for subsequent visits.
The gate area also establishes the castle’s condition. The fortification is still recognisably military, but its defenders have lost control of the grounds. The presence of Misbegotten, rats and other hostile creatures makes the entrance more dangerous than a normal garrisoned fort.
Entrance lift and courtyard
The lift leads into the central section of the castle. The courtyard is occupied by hostile soldiers and Misbegotten, including enemies gathered around a large pile of bodies. This is one of the more dangerous early areas because several enemies can notice the player at once.
The courtyard has multiple vertical routes. Ladders lead upwards towards the ramparts, while side paths and platforms contain consumables and upgrade materials. Do not rush straight towards the nearest ladder without checking the edges of the courtyard.
Ramparts
The ramparts are the central navigation section of Castle Morne. They provide access to upper towers, the rear of the castle and Edgar’s position. Winged Misbegotten patrol or occupy parts of this route, making the narrow walkways hazardous.
Because the ramparts are elevated, falling is a greater threat than in the courtyard. Move carefully around broken parapets and avoid fighting several enemies at the edge of a wall.
Edgar’s tower
Castellan Edgar sits at the top of a tower overlooking the castle. He is not initially aggressive and serves as the principal NPC for the area.
If the player has obtained Irina’s Letter from Irina near the Bridge of Sacrifice, Edgar can be asked to read it. He explains that he cannot leave while the castle remains under threat and while the stolen sword remains in the hands of the Misbegotten. Delivering the letter also enables Edgar’s summon sign for the Leonine Misbegotten encounter.
Rear exterior
The Behind the Castle Site of Grace is reached by dropping or travelling around the southern rear of the fortress. This part of the complex is easy to overlook if the player assumes that the front courtyard is the only route.
The rear exterior contains ledges, walls and lower paths that lead towards the Rampart Gaol. It is also a useful recovery point because it splits the upper castle from the lower approach to the boss.
Rampart Gaol
The Rampart Gaol is the lower section of the dungeon. Its approach includes narrow routes, prison-like structures and hostile creatures positioned around the descent to the beach.
The Beside the Rampart Gaol Site of Grace is close to the boss route and is the most convenient checkpoint before Leonine Misbegotten. Explore the area before entering the fog gate, since several useful items are placed away from the direct route.
Morne Moangrave
Morne Moangrave is the beachside arena at the southern end of the complex. It is the final destination of the castle route and the location of the Leonine Misbegotten fight.
The name and setting give the area a funerary character. The arena is separated from the fortress, but it is still part of Castle Morne’s dungeon structure rather than a separate overworld location.

Residents, characters and factional situation
Castellan Edgar
Location: Upper tower in Castle Morne.
Edgar is the castle’s castellan and commander. He remains behind because he considers the defence of Castle Morne his duty. His daughter Irina has fled towards the Bridge of Sacrifice and asks the player to deliver a letter to him.
The quest is dialogue-sensitive. Exhaust Edgar’s dialogue rather than speaking to him only once. His movement to the Bridge of Sacrifice is part of the intended sequence.
Irina of Morne
Irina is not located inside Castle Morne. She is found near the Bridge of Sacrifice, on the northern approach to the peninsula. She is included here because her letter and fate define the castle’s principal quest.
Speak to her before entering the castle and accept the letter. The intended progression is to deliver the letter to Edgar before defeating Leonine Misbegotten. If the player progresses too far without handling the relevant dialogue, Irina’s quest state can advance to her death. Sources also report that resting in Liurnia after receiving the letter can move the quest forward even if the castle segment has not been completed, so players following the story should avoid unnecessary progression if they want the sequence in order.
Misbegotten rebellion
The Misbegotten were servants of Castle Morne who rose against their former masters. The rebellion explains why the fortress is filled with Misbegotten alongside the remaining soldiers. Leonine Misbegotten has taken the castle’s treasured sword and attempts to claim it as his own.
Faction and resident directory
The soldiers and Misbegotten are ordinary enemies rather than recruitable or friendly residents. No functional shop or permanent merchant operates inside Castle Morne.

Enemies and boss
Ordinary enemies
Enemy placement can vary slightly by route and elevation, but the Castle Morne complex is principally populated by:
The broad enemy directory above reflects the location listings associated with Castle Morne, including its exterior and coastal sections. Some creatures are encountered in side areas rather than along the direct route.
The Guardian Golem archer outside the castle is a fixed, non-respawning threat according to location listings, unlike the ordinary soldiers, Misbegotten and wildlife that normally return after resting.
Leonine Misbegotten
Leonine Misbegotten is an optional Great Enemy boss at Morne Moangrave. The fight is fast and aggressive, with wide sword swings, jumping attacks and repeated pressure at close range.
Leonine Misbegotten is associated with the Grafted Blade Greatsword, the sword taken from Castle Morne. Defeating the boss awards the weapon and completes the central combat objective of Edgar’s story.

Items and collectibles
Castle Morne’s most important rewards are concentrated in its weapon chests, side routes and boss arena.
Notable fixed rewards
The Claymore is one of the most useful early greatswords available in the base game. It is worth collecting even for characters who do not intend to use it immediately. The Grafted Blade Greatsword is a colossal sword requiring a strength-focused build and is the narrative reward for reclaiming Castle Morne’s stolen weapon.
Minor loot directory
The Castle Morne location listings include the following minor rewards:
Several of these appear in multiple placements or quantities. The location listing records three Smithing Stone [1] pickups and three Smithing Stone [2] pickups, as well as multiple Fire Grease and Throwing Dagger placements.
Harvestable and incidental items
These are environmental gathering items rather than unique Castle Morne rewards. Their presence should not be confused with fixed chest loot or boss rewards.

Notable fixed rewards
| Item | Location or acquisition |
|---|---|
| Claymore | Chest within the castle |
| Twinblade Talisman | Chest within the castle |
| Whip | Castle interior or side route |
| Steel-Wire Torch | Castle interior |
| Stonesword Key | Castle interior |
| Grafted Blade Greatsword | Defeat Leonine Misbegotten |
| Sacrificial Twig | Given or obtained through Edgar’s dialogue, depending on quest state |
Walkthrough
1. Complete the approach
Cross the Bridge of Sacrifice and follow the southern road. If you have not already done so, speak to Irina beside the road north of the bridge and take Irina’s Letter.
Ride towards Castle Morne. You can ignore the giant archer temporarily, enter the gate and activate the Castle Morne Lift Site of Grace.
2. Clear or bypass the courtyard
The courtyard contains several groups of enemies. Pull them apart where possible rather than fighting in the middle of the crowd. Search the edges for loot before climbing.
The main route leads upwards by ladders. Listen for winged enemies above before climbing, since they can attack while the player is still on the ladder.
3. Find Edgar
Continue across the upper route until you reach the tower where Castellan Edgar sits. Speak to him and exhaust his dialogue. If you have Irina’s Letter, choose the option to deliver it.
Do this before killing Leonine Misbegotten if you want the most straightforward quest progression and access to Edgar’s summon sign.
4. Explore behind the castle
From the upper sections, continue towards the rear of the fortress. Activate Behind the Castle and search the ledges and lower routes. This is the point at which many players miss the side loot, because the boss path continues downwards while several items are placed on platforms away from it.
5. Descend towards the Rampart Gaol
Follow the route towards the lower gaol. Activate Beside the Rampart Gaol and clear the nearby enemies before entering the boss route.
Check the surroundings for upgrade materials and consumables. The boss entrance is close, but the area is designed to reward exploration.
6. Defeat Leonine Misbegotten
Enter Morne Moangrave and defeat Leonine Misbegotten. The boss is optional for the wider game but central to Castle Morne’s story.
After the fight, collect the Grafted Blade Greatsword and activate the Morne Moangrave Site of Grace.
7. Finish Edgar’s sequence
Return to Edgar’s tower and speak to him again if necessary. Then return to Irina’s location near the Bridge of Sacrifice. Edgar’s next appearance there advances the tragedy of the quest and leads eventually to his later role at the Revenger’s Shack in Liurnia.
The Revenger’s Shack is not part of Castle Morne. It is a separate location and should be treated as the next stage of Edgar’s quest rather than an extension of the castle dungeon.
---
Progression changes and missable states
Castle Morne is mostly fixed in layout. Its major changes are quest-state changes rather than a full environmental transformation.
Before Irina’s quest
You can enter Castle Morne, explore the fortress and defeat Leonine Misbegotten without first speaking to Irina. The dungeon remains available and its primary rewards are still obtainable.
However, skipping Irina and Edgar can alter the order or availability of their dialogue. If you are following the story, speak to Irina first.
After receiving Irina’s Letter
Edgar’s dialogue changes when the letter is delivered. This is the preferred point to handle the NPC interaction because it explains the castle’s conflict and can enable Edgar as a boss ally.
After defeating Leonine Misbegotten
The castle itself does not become a new friendly settlement. Enemies and loot follow normal Elden Ring dungeon rules, while Edgar’s quest state advances.
Return to Edgar after the boss and exhaust his dialogue. He then leaves his tower and later appears near Irina.
Irina’s death
Irina’s quest has a tragic fixed outcome rather than a rescue ending. Sources differ in how players describe the exact trigger timing, but they agree that her death is tied to progression through the quest and that the intended sequence is to deliver her letter to Edgar, defeat Leonine Misbegotten and then return to Irina.
New Game Plus and multiplayer
Castle Morne uses the normal Elden Ring rules for New Game Plus, enemy respawns, item resets and multiplayer. It is not a separate game mode or a procedurally generated area. The enemy and loot placements described here are fixed for the base game.
---
Hazards and secrets
The castle is more vertical than it first appears
The obvious forward route does not contain everything. Check:
Do not assume the boss is the end of the quest
Defeating Leonine Misbegotten gives the main reward, but Edgar’s dialogue still needs to be advanced. Return to his tower, then revisit Irina’s location.
Edgar is easy to overlook
The castle’s scale can make the tower seem decorative. It is not. Edgar’s position is important for the quest and for the optional summon sign.
The giant is not the dungeon boss
The giant outside the gate is a fixed overworld-style enemy guarding the approach. The actual Castle Morne boss is Leonine Misbegotten at Morne Moangrave.
