About this guide
Shadow of the Erdtree location guide Scope: the Dragon’s Pit dungeon itself, including its internal chambers, its two Sites of Grace, its enemies, loot and boss. The Foot of the Jagged Peak, Grand Altar of Dragon Communion, Jagged Peak, and Charo’s Hidden Grave are treated as neighbouring destinations rather than parts of Dragon’s Pit.
Overview
Dragon’s Pit is an optional cave dungeon in the eastern Gravesite Plain of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. It lies at the end of the Pillar Path and forms the principal gateway from the Gravesite Plain to the Foot of the Jagged Peak. The dungeon is short but unusually important because clearing it opens access to a large southeastern section of the Realm of Shadow, including the Jagged Peak, the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion and Charo’s Hidden Grave.
Its interior is built around dragon worship and Dragon Communion. The passage is filled with ancient-dragon imagery, skeletal remains associated with Farum Azula beastmen and ritual objects. A fork leads either towards a Magma Wyrm or down into the final arena, where the Ancient Dragon-Man tests the player before allowing passage towards the Jagged Peak.
Dragon’s Pit is not a broad open-world region. It is a contained cave dungeon with a linear main route, one optional combat branch, one main boss and a post-boss exit area. The nearby roads and dragon sites belong to the Pillar Path or the Foot of the Jagged Peak, not to Dragon’s Pit proper.

Reaching the entrance
The approach road contains useful exploration material, but it should not be confused with the dungeon’s item list. In particular, the Herbalist’s Bell Bearing is found outside the cave, in a rope-strung pot hanging from the mountain wall on the western side of the channel. Because the pot is suspended out of reach, it must be destroyed with a projectile. The bell bearing can then be given to the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold to unlock Rada Fruit for purchase.
Reaching the entrance: steps
- 01Begin at Pillar Path Waypoint.
- 02Follow the road south-west towards the dragon statues and rocky channel.
- 03Continue past the location where the Ancient Dragon-Man can invade.
- 04Enter the cave at the end of the route.
- 05Activate the Dragon’s Pit Site of Grace just inside the entrance.
Route through the dungeon
Dragon’s Pit is mostly linear. Follow the main passage through the early chambers, dealing with skeletal beastmen and checking the side ledges for minor loot. Eventually, the route reaches a large chamber with a fork.
The apparent fall into the boss arena is intentional. There is no ordinary death from the drop, so take the plunge when ready. After defeating the boss, continue through the newly available passage to reach Dragon’s Pit Terminus.
From the Terminus grace, proceed outside to the Foot of the Jagged Peak.
---
Dragon’s Pit does not contain named internal districts in the way a legacy dungeon does. Its meaningful internal divisions are functional rather than formally named.
Route through the dungeon
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Upper route | leads to the Magma Wyrm’s chamber. |
| Lower route | leads to the drop into the Ancient Dragon-Man’s arena. |
Entrance chambers
The first chambers establish the dungeon’s visual language. Dragon statues, stone surfaces and skeletal remains suggest that this is not simply a natural cave. It has been used as a ritual or testing ground associated with Dragon Communion.
The early skeletal enemies are dangerous mainly because they can surround the player in narrow passages. Avoid fighting several at once where possible. Pull them back into the previous room, use wide attacks or strike damage, and confirm that fallen skeletons have been permanently destroyed before moving on.
Forked cavern
The central fork is the dungeon’s main optional branch.
The upper route climbs towards an open chamber containing the Magma Wyrm. The lower route proceeds towards the Ancient Dragon-Man. The Magma Wyrm is not required to finish the dungeon, but it is worth defeating for its unusually valuable upgrade material.
Magma Wyrm chamber
The Magma Wyrm occupies a comparatively open cavern, although the boss’s charging attacks can still become difficult to avoid around the chamber’s edges. It uses magma trails, lunging movements and close-range attacks, so staying to its side is generally safer than standing directly in front of it.
The Magma Wyrm drops an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, a limited high-level material used to reinforce a standard armament to +25. This is one of the nine Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones available in the Realm of Shadow according to the item directory.
Chasm and Ancient Dragon-Man arena
The lower branch ends at a deep chasm. Jumping down takes the player to the Ancient Dragon-Man’s arena. The encounter is designed as a trial rather than a large spectacle fight: the boss is a humanoid dragon warrior wielding the same type of weapon that the player receives afterwards.
Once the Ancient Dragon-Man is defeated, the route beyond opens and the dungeon can be completed.

Characters inside Dragon’s Pit
There are no friendly residents or merchants inside the dungeon.
Ancient Dragon-Man
The Ancient Dragon-Man is described as a former Dragon Communion warrior who once judged whether challengers were worthy of attempting to devour the Dreaded One. His appearance reflects the original or ancient form of Dragon Communion, connected to the use of a Rock Heart.
Ancient Dragon-Man
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Status | Main boss |
| Location | Bottom of Dragon’s Pit |
| Role | Former Dragon Communion warrior and arbiter of those considered worthy to face the Dread Dragon |
| Reward | Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana and 130,000 runes |
Characters outside the dungeon
Igon
Igon is associated with the Dragon Communion storyline and the Jagged Peak route, but he is not a resident of Dragon’s Pit and should not be listed as a dungeon character. He can be found on the approach and later becomes important in the Bayle storyline.
Dragon Communion Priestess
The Dragon Communion Priestess resides at the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion, beyond Dragon’s Pit. She is not encountered inside the dungeon. The altar becomes accessible by passing through Dragon’s Pit and reaching the Foot of the Jagged Peak.
Factions and traditions
The dungeon’s architecture and its guardian imply that it functioned as a test for Dragon Communion warriors. This is supported by the descriptions of the Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana and the Ancient Dragon-Man, rather than by a named faction occupying the cave in the present day.

Enemy directory
Common enemies
The dungeon’s regular enemies are skeletal beastmen. Some are encountered in groups or in cramped spaces, making crowd control more important than raw damage. Their bodies can reassemble after being knocked down, so ensure that each corpse has been finished before advancing.
Bosses
The Magma Wyrm and Ancient Dragon-Man are distinct encounters. The Magma Wyrm is an optional elite boss-like enemy in the upper branch, while the Ancient Dragon-Man is the mandatory encounter for opening the route to the dungeon’s exit.

Ancient Dragon-Man: practical strategy
The Ancient Dragon-Man is a relatively mobile humanoid opponent rather than a huge dragon. He carries the Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana and can punish slow attacks with quick counters.
The boss has a listed health value of 19,097 and awards 130,000 runes. His guaranteed weapon reward is the Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana.
Useful approaches include
- 01Stay close enough to pressure him, but do not trade repeatedly. His attacks are easier to read at close range than across the arena.
- 02Punish the recovery after his larger katana swings.
- 03Use jump attacks or heavy weapons carefully. He can be staggered, but overcommitting gives him time to retaliate.
- 04Treat the arena entrance as a reset point. If the opening exchange goes badly, create space, heal and re-enter rather than panic-rolling.
- 05Use spirit ashes if desired. The fight is optional and there is no reason to impose a self-restriction unless you want the challenge.
Magma Wyrm: practical strategy
The Magma Wyrm is most dangerous when it charges through the room while leaving magma behind. The safest general approach is to attack its side or rear and avoid standing in the path of its head-first lunges.
The reward is particularly valuable because the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone can bring a standard weapon to its maximum normal reinforcement level of +25.
---
The most important rewards are the Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana and the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone. Several minor items are also recorded for the dungeon and its immediate loot route.
Major items
The Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana requires 15 Strength and 20 Dexterity. It causes blood loss build-up, deals increased damage to dragons and ancient dragons, and uses the Dragonwound Slash skill. Its charged skill also releases a projectile alongside the weapon strike.
Major items
| Item | Location or source | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana | Defeat the Ancient Dragon-Man | Unique great katana with anti-dragon properties |
| Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone | Defeat the Magma Wyrm | Reinforces standard weapons up to +25 |
| Dragon Heart | Associated with the dungeon’s dragon-themed encounters and loot listings | Used at Dragon Communion altars |
Minor loot directory
The following items are listed for Dragon’s Pit or its internal loot route:
The minor loot should be understood as fixed dungeon pickups unless explicitly marked otherwise. Enemy drops, including materials obtained from skeletal enemies, should not be treated as fixed collectible placements.
Nearby but not inside Dragon’s Pit
These items belong to the surrounding route or later connected areas and should not be added to the Dragon’s Pit directory:
The Rock Heart, in particular, is not a Dragon’s Pit reward. It is found later in the Jagged Peak after following the Domain of Dragons painting. It transforms the player into an ancient dragon form when used while disrobed and temporarily strengthens Dragon Communion incantations when used again in that form.
---
Nearby but not inside Dragon’s Pit
Dragon’s Pit Site of Grace
This grace is just inside the cave entrance. Activate it immediately. It provides a safe return point before the dungeon’s enemies and lets you recover after exploring the approach road.
Dragon’s Pit Terminus Site of Grace
This grace appears after defeating the Ancient Dragon-Man. It sits at the far end of the dungeon and acts as the transition point to the Foot of the Jagged Peak. The Terminus is therefore both a checkpoint and a navigation landmark.
There are no merchants, smithing tables, summoning pools, churches, map pillars or usable shops inside Dragon’s Pit.
---
1. Prepare at the entrance
Activate the Dragon’s Pit grace. This is a good point to spend runes, adjust equipment and choose whether to explore the Magma Wyrm branch before attempting the final boss.
A weapon with reliable single-target damage is useful against the Ancient Dragon-Man. For the regular skeletal enemies, wide attacks or a weapon that can quickly finish grounded targets will reduce the risk of being surrounded.
2. Clear the first skeletal chambers
Move slowly through the initial rooms. Listen for movement and avoid sprinting into groups. When a skeletal beastman falls, attack the body again if necessary to prevent it from reviving.
Check side alcoves and ledges before following the main passage. The dungeon is short, but several minor pickups are easy to overlook because the stone walls and ritual scenery blend together.
3. Reach the fork
At the large central chamber, identify the two routes:
Exploring the upper branch first is the most efficient route for a completion-focused run because it avoids having to backtrack after the main boss.
4. Defeat the Magma Wyrm
Enter the upper chamber and defeat the Magma Wyrm. Collect the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone after the fight.
If the Wyrm is proving awkward, return to the central fork and postpone the encounter. It is not required to reach Dragon’s Pit Terminus.
5. Take the lower route
Return to the fork and follow the descending passage. Continue until the path ends at the deep chasm.
When ready, drop into the arena. The fall is part of the dungeon’s intended route.
6. Defeat the Ancient Dragon-Man
Defeat the Ancient Dragon-Man and collect the Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana. The boss’s defeat is the progression trigger that allows the route beyond the arena to open.
7. Activate Dragon’s Pit Terminus
Continue through the newly accessible passage and activate Dragon’s Pit Terminus. This is the dungeon’s final checkpoint.
8. Choose the next destination
From the Terminus, leave the cave and enter the Foot of the Jagged Peak.
These are separate areas with their own enemies, bosses, NPCs and loot.
---
For a speedier route, ignore the upper branch and proceed directly to the Ancient Dragon-Man. This sacrifices the dungeon’s most valuable upgrade material but does not prevent you from returning later.
---
For the most efficient complete exploration
- 01Activate Dragon’s Pit.
- 02Clear the first skeletal chambers.
- 03Search side alcoves for minor loot.
- 04Take the upper fork.
- 05Defeat the Magma Wyrm and collect the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
- 06Return to the fork.
- 07Take the lower route.
- 08Drop into the Ancient Dragon-Man’s arena.
- 09Defeat the Ancient Dragon-Man.
- 10Collect the Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana.
- 11Activate Dragon’s Pit Terminus.
- 12Leave the cave and decide whether to explore the Foot of the Jagged Peak or continue towards the Grand Altar.
The dungeon’s most important secret is its route function
Dragon’s Pit’s greatest importance is geographical. It is not merely a small cave containing a weapon. Defeating the Ancient Dragon-Man opens a route into the southeastern map that cannot be reached by simply walking around the mountain from the Gravesite Plain. The dungeon therefore acts as a progression gate to the Jagged Peak and its connected areas.
Skeleton revival
Skeletal beastmen can rise again after being knocked down. Do not assume that a cleared room is safe until the corpses have been destroyed or the enemies have visibly vanished.
The chasm is intentional
The plunge into the Ancient Dragon-Man arena may look like a trap or an accidental death route. It is the intended path. Heal before jumping if necessary, because the fight begins immediately after the landing.
External approach loot
The Herbalist’s Bell Bearing is easy to miss because it is not placed on the ground. It hangs in a pot from the cliffside on the Pillar Path outside Dragon’s Pit. Use a bow, crossbow, spell or another projectile to break the pot and make the item accessible.
---
Dragon’s Pit presents the older, harsher side of Dragon Communion. In the Lands Between, Dragon Communion generally involves consuming dragon hearts to gain draconic powers. The Shadow of the Erdtree material expands this tradition by connecting it to Bayle, the ancient dragons and the original transformation into a dragon-like form.
The Ancient Dragon-Man appears to have undergone an early form of this transformation. His weapon description identifies him as a former Dragon Communion warrior who selected those worthy to devour the Dreaded One. The Rock Heart’s description separately refers to an ancient form of Dragon Communion that turns the user into an ancient dragon, reinforcing the connection between the dungeon’s guardian and the later transformation mechanic.
The dungeon also foreshadows the larger conflict at the Jagged Peak. The player is not simply passing through a cave to reach another map icon. They are entering the territory of Dragon Communion, approaching the Grand Altar and eventually the domain of Bayle the Dread.
Progression changes
Defeating the Ancient Dragon-Man is not required for the main story route through the Realm of Shadow. It is, however, required for access to this southeastern chain of areas.
