Key takeaways
- Dragonbarrow Cave is an optional minor dungeon, not a separate open-world subregion.
- Its Site of Grace is immediately inside the entrance.
- The large Runebear in the first main cavern is a normal enemy, not the dungeon boss, and does not provide a unique reward.
- The Bull-Goat’s Talisman is in a side chamber beyond the Runebear.
- The final encounter is Beastman of Farum Azula (Duo).
- The boss reward is Flamedrake Talisman +2, which greatly improves fire damage negation.
About this guide
Base game location guide. This page covers Dragonbarrow Cave itself, including its entrance cavern, wildlife chambers, boss arena and Site of Grace. It does not expand the scope to the whole Greyoll’s Dragonbarrow region, Bestial Sanctum, Fort Faroth, the Minor Erdtree or nearby roads.
Overview
Dragonbarrow Cave is an optional cave dungeon in northern Caelid, within Greyoll’s Dragonbarrow. Its entrance lies beneath the Minor Erdtree, in the cliff face west of the tree. The cave is short, but its central chamber contains a powerful Runebear in a confined space, while its final arena holds two Beastmen of Farum Azula rather than a single boss.
The cave is worth visiting primarily for two talismans: the Bull-Goat’s Talisman, found during exploration, and the Flamedrake Talisman +2, awarded for defeating the Beastman duo. The area also contains several fixed consumables and a useful collection of cave crafting materials.
Boundaries and internal layout
Dragonbarrow Cave is a compact, self-contained dungeon. The verified scope consists of:
There are no named NPC residences, shops, quest hubs, elevators, shortcuts to another region or separately named child areas recorded as part of the cave. The nearby Minor Erdtree and Dragonbarrow roads are exterior locations and should not be treated as cave subareas.
Boundaries and internal layout: steps
- 01The entrance passage and Site of Grace.
- 02A broad cavern patrolled by a Runebear.
- 03Side passages containing wolves, materials and the Bull-Goat’s Talisman.
- 04A deeper passage leading to the Beastman duo’s fog gate and boss arena.
Location and access
The cave is found close to the Minor Erdtree in Greyoll’s Dragonbarrow. From the Dragonbarrow Fork area, follow the lower route towards the Minor Erdtree, then search the cliff beneath and west of the tree for the entrance. The opening is not in the tree’s immediate upper clearing. It is set into the lower cliffside.
The cave can also be reached by travelling through Dragonbarrow from other Caelid approaches. A commonly used route is to reach the northern Caelid plateau, travel towards the Minor Erdtree, and descend to the lower path beneath it. The waygate connected with the Third Church of Marika can provide access to northern Dragonbarrow, but that waygate leads to the Bestial Sanctum outside this cave, not directly to Dragonbarrow Cave.
Nearby exterior locations
These places are connected by the surrounding Dragonbarrow landscape but are not included within Dragonbarrow Cave:
Nearby exterior locations
Site of Grace
The Dragonbarrow Cave Site of Grace is positioned just inside the entrance. Activate it before exploring the first cavern. This provides a convenient return point if the Runebear or the boss kills you, and allows you to spend runes before attempting the deeper sections.
There is no second Site of Grace inside the cave. The boss arena is reached from the same dungeon route.
Enemies and hazards
Wolves
Wolves occupy the side passages and deeper routes. They are less dangerous individually than the Runebear, but their attacks can interrupt exploration or draw you into the larger cavern at an awkward time.
Where possible, eliminate the nearest wolves quietly before entering the wider chambers. The cave’s vegetation can obscure enemy positions, so avoid sprinting blindly through the grass.
Runebear
The Runebear is the cave’s principal environmental hazard. It patrols the large opening after the entrance and is stronger than the ordinary wildlife encountered around much of Limgrave. Its size, rapid charges and wide attacks are particularly threatening in the cave’s enclosed spaces.
You do not need to kill it to complete the cave. It is possible to wait for it to move away, run around it, collect the nearby items and continue towards the side passages. Killing it may make the area safer, but it does not grant the cave’s talismans or a special named reward.
Items and collectibles
The cave’s fixed rewards are concentrated in the Runebear cavern and the boss arena. Its natural materials include several types of cave moss, Rowa Fruit, Erdleaf Flowers, Silver Fireflies and Crystal Buds. These materials are gathered from the environment and are separate from the named treasure rewards.
Named and fixed items
The Golden Rune [12] and Warming Stone are associated with the Runebear section. The Bull-Goat’s Talisman is found in a side area beyond the main cavern, near a corpse. The Flamedrake Talisman +2 is not found on a corpse or in a chest. It is awarded after the boss fight.
Crafting materials
The exact material placements are distributed through the cave rather than being concentrated in one treasure room. They are optional pickups, but the cave’s moss and fireflies make it worthwhile to search the side passages after the main threats have been dealt with.
Boss: Beastman of Farum Azula (Duo)
The final arena contains two Beastmen of Farum Azula:
The duo shares the danger of many Elden Ring two-enemy encounters: the melee Beastman pressures you at close range while the knife-user can punish healing or disengagement. Guides commonly recommend dealing with the knife-wielding Beastman first, either by using a Spirit Ash to divide their attention or by quickly staggering and killing that target before focusing on the larger Beastman.
Recommended approach
The Beastmen are vulnerable to stagger pressure, and the encounter becomes considerably easier once it is reduced to one target. Parrying and jump attacks are also effective options for players comfortable with the timing.
Reward
Defeating the duo awards Flamedrake Talisman +2, which greatly increases fire damage negation. It is the strongest Dragonbarrow Cave reward and is useful against enemies, bosses and attacks that rely heavily on fire damage.
Recommended approach
- 01Enter the arena cautiously and identify the knife-throwing Beastman.
- 02Use a Spirit Ash or a heavy attack to create an opening.
- 03Prioritise the knife-user if you can reach it safely.
- 04Once one Beastman is defeated, fight the survivor alone and use guard counters, jump attacks or charged attacks to break its stance.
- 05Avoid chasing a retreating enemy directly into the other Beastman’s attack range.
Suggested exploration route
- 01Activate the Dragonbarrow Cave Site of Grace.
- 02Enter the first large cavern and observe the Runebear’s patrol.
- 03Collect the Golden Rune [12] and Warming Stone when the route is clear, or return after killing the bear.
- 04Explore the side passage for wolves, cave materials and the Bull-Goat’s Talisman.
- 05Continue through the deeper passage towards the fog gate.
- 06Enter the boss arena and separate the two Beastmen.
- 07Defeat the duo and collect the Flamedrake Talisman +2.
- 08Return through the cave and collect any remaining moss, fireflies, Rowa Fruit or Crystal Buds.
Lore and design notes
The cave’s Beastmen of Farum Azula connect it thematically with Farum Azula, although the cave itself is not a route to that later region. Their presence suggests that Beastmen are not confined to the airborne ruins encountered much later in the game. The placement also creates a contrast between the cave’s natural wildlife and its final inhabitants: the upper chambers are dominated by wolves and a Runebear, while the deepest chamber is occupied by organised, armed humanoid beasts.
The cave also follows a recurring Elden Ring design pattern. Its most intimidating visible threat is not its actual boss. The Runebear creates immediate pressure and encourages stealth, observation or route-finding, while the final encounter tests the player against coordinated enemies in a smaller arena.
