Overview

Groveside Cave is a small optional cave dungeon in western Limgrave, found almost directly north of the Church of Elleh. It is one of the earliest side dungeons most players can reach after leaving the tutorial area, and it makes a good introduction to the game’s compact cave layout: a Site of Grace near the entrance, a hostile central chamber, scattered crafting materials and a fog gate leading to an optional boss.

The cave is occupied by wolves and a Beastman of Farum Azula. Its most important reward is the Flamedrake Talisman, which improves fire damage negation and is obtained by defeating the Beastman. The boss also awards 1,000 runes in this early-game version of the encounter.

Groveside Cave is short, but it is not entirely a straight corridor. The first passage opens into a broader wolf den with a small pool, bodies to loot and several gathering points. A passage at the far side leads to the boss fog. The layout rewards careful searching before entering the arena, particularly because several items are easy to overlook in the dim cavern.

Scope and boundaries

Groveside Cave is a named minor dungeon rather than a broad region. Its boundary begins at the cave entrance and includes the interior Site of Grace, the wolf-den chamber, the connecting passage and the Beastman’s boss arena. The Church of Elleh and the surrounding woodland are neighbouring areas, not subareas of Groveside Cave.

The cave should also be kept separate from Dragonbarrow Cave. Both locations contain a Beastman of Farum Azula, but they are different dungeons with different rewards. Groveside Cave gives the standard Flamedrake Talisman, while Dragonbarrow Cave contains a later and stronger version of the Beastman encounter associated with Flamedrake Talisman +2.

This guide covers the base game. It does not treat Shadow of the Erdtree or Elden Ring Nightreign as continuations of the cave’s map, encounters or item placement.

Location and access

Finding the entrance

From the Church of Elleh, travel north towards the shallow water and the rocky woodland. Follow the cliff line rather than continuing towards Gatefront Ruins. The entrance is set into the rock face and is marked by a brazier, making it easier to identify once you are close.

If you are approaching from the First Step, the safest early route is to reach the Church of Elleh first, then ride or walk north along the western side of the nearby water. Avoid wandering too far towards the larger lake and the dragon encounter if you only want to reach the cave.

Suggested early route

There is no key, quest item or special interaction required to enter Groveside Cave. The cave can be visited as soon as the player reaches this part of Limgrave.

Suggested early route

  1. 01
Begin at the Church of Elleh.
  2. 02
Face north and move towards the wooded ground beyond the church.
  3. 03
Keep the water and cliff edge nearby rather than heading east towards the main road.
  4. 04
Look for the brazier outside the opening in the rock.
  5. 05
Enter the cave and activate the Site of Grace immediately inside.

Geography and internal layout

The entrance passage is narrow and quickly opens into a larger chamber. The central cavern contains a pool or damp low area, several wolves and multiple loot points. The cave’s interior appears to have been used or occupied before the current encounter, with a fire and bodies among the debris. One source describes the area as resembling an abandoned Godrick Soldier encampment that has become a wolf den, although this environmental interpretation should not be treated as a separately named subarea.

The boss route branches from the central chamber. The fog gate is reached by continuing through the passage on the far side of the wolf den, described by walkthroughs as the right-hand route when moving deeper through the cave. The arena beyond is more open than the approach, giving enough room to retreat from the Beastman’s long sword swings.

Checkpoint and facilities

Groveside Cave Site of Grace

The Groveside Cave Site of Grace is located just inside the entrance. Activate it before entering the wolf chamber. It provides the normal Site of Grace functions, including resting, recovering health and supplies, changing memorised spells, managing Ashes of War and fast travelling when fast travel is available.

It is also a useful reset point if the wolves overwhelm you. Because the boss is only a short run from the grace, there is little reason to carry a large rune total into repeated attempts.

Facilities directory

There are no merchants, smiths, summoning pools, map fragments, churches, elevators, lifts, sealed doors or quest NPCs inside the cave according to the researched location guides.

Residents and enemies

Wolves

The ordinary enemies are wolves occupying the central chamber. Sources identify Grey Wolf and White Wolf types, while walkthroughs also refer to a stronger pack leader or alpha wolf. The wolves can attack together, making the encounter more dangerous than the cave’s small size suggests.

The safest approach is to avoid rushing into the middle of the den. Pull one wolf towards the entrance, defeat it, then advance carefully. A wolf can approach from a side ramp or higher ground, so checking the edges of the chamber is important even after the first attackers have been killed.

Beastman of Farum Azula

The Beastman of Farum Azula is the cave’s boss. It uses a large curved sword and relies on rapid slashes, lunges, jumping attacks and a powerful overhead strike. It may also howl, creating a noticeable opening for a counterattack. The encounter has one phase and no additional enemies in the arena.

The boss’s apparent connection with Farum Azula is notable, but Groveside Cave does not explain it directly. The Beastman is encountered elsewhere in the game, including Dragonbarrow Cave, so this fight is best understood as an early example of a recurring enemy type rather than a unique story character.

Enemy directory

The exact number and distribution of wolves can vary in how guides describe them, particularly where one source calls an enemy a pack leader or alpha rather than using a separate formal enemy name. The directory therefore records the verified enemy types rather than asserting an unverified fixed count.

Walkthrough

1. Activate the Site of Grace

Enter the cave and rest at Groveside Cave. This is the most important practical step before clearing the area. If you die in the wolf den or boss arena, the retry begins close to the action.

2. Enter the wolf den carefully

Proceed through the narrow tunnel until it opens into the main cavern. Do not sprint directly to the far side. The first wolves may be visible, but others can approach from the edges or higher sections of the chamber.

Use the entrance passage as a retreat route. If several wolves attack at once, back up rather than trying to fight in the centre of the den.

3. Clear the wolves

Defeat the wolves one at a time where possible. Melee characters can use a shield to absorb a bite or slash, then punish the recovery animation. Heavy weapons can stagger them, but the player should avoid long attack animations while another wolf is nearby.

Ranged characters can retreat towards the entrance and fire from a safer angle. Spirit Ashes can also help divide the pack, although summoning rules apply and the player must have the required resource available.

4. Search the central chamber

Once the wolves are dead, search the bodies and cavern edges. The cave contains a Cracked Pot, a Golden Rune [1], Glowstones and crafting materials. Some of the loot is placed near the fire or on bodies around the wider chamber, while Glowstone is reported near the back of the cave by the waterfall or damp area.

Collect the materials before entering the fog. They do not require a special tool or quest state.

5. Enter the boss arena

Continue through the passage leading away from the wolf den. The fog gate marks the Beastman’s arena. There are no required NPC conversations or switches before entering.

If you are carrying a large number of runes, consider returning to the Site of Grace first. The boss is optional, and there is no reason to risk an unnecessary rune loss.

6. Defeat the Beastman

The Beastman is aggressive at close range but gives clear visual signals before many attacks. Keep enough distance to see the sword arcs, then punish the end of a combo rather than attacking through it.

A shield can make the early attempts more manageable, but blocking every hit may drain stamina quickly. Guard counters and charged heavy attacks are particularly useful when you can safely stay close for a moment. One guide specifically notes that strong attacks can stagger the boss reliably, though the timing and weapon will affect how easily this works.

Do not become trapped against the arena wall. Circle around the room and use the open space to reset the distance. The Beastman’s sword covers a wide area, so attacking from directly in front during the middle of a combo is risky.

7. Collect the reward

The talisman improves fire damage negation, making it a useful early defensive option against fire-based attacks. It is especially relevant before exploring areas or fighting enemies that rely heavily on fire, although the player is not required to equip it immediately.

Boss strategy in more detail

Melee characters

Stay just outside the Beastman’s immediate range and wait for the end of an attack string. A single heavy attack or guard counter is usually safer than attempting a full combo. If the boss begins howling, move in and attack, but do not assume every pause is harmless.

A weapon with good stance damage can shorten the fight by forcing openings. If you use a shield, watch stamina carefully. A blocked sequence followed by a guard counter can leave you vulnerable if the Beastman continues attacking.

Ranged characters

The arena gives enough room to retreat, but the Beastman can close distance quickly. Fire only after the boss finishes an attack or begins a long recovery. Avoid standing directly against the entrance wall, since this limits your escape route.

Magic and incantations

Cast during the boss’s recovery animations rather than at neutral range. The Beastman’s forward movement can punish slow spells. If using a summon, allow it to draw attention before committing to longer casts.

Summons

Spirit Ashes can be used in the arena if the normal conditions for summoning are met. A summon is particularly helpful for new players because it divides the Beastman’s attention and creates safer opportunities to heal or cast. The boss arena contains no secondary foe, so the summon’s main value is distraction rather than crowd control.

Items and collectibles

The cave contains a mixture of fixed loot and renewable gathering materials. Fixed pickups remain collected after being taken, while materials such as Cave Moss, Mushrooms and Silver Fireflies are gathering resources and may return after resting or reloading according to the game’s normal material rules.

The Cracked Pot is particularly valuable early because it is not simply a consumable. It expands the number of pot-based items the character can carry and craft. The Golden Rune [1] is a small but fixed rune reserve, while Glowstones are practical in dark caves and can be thrown or placed to illuminate an area.

Crafting materials

Cave Moss and Mushrooms support early consumable crafting. Silver Fireflies are associated with recipes such as Silver-Pickled Fowl Foot, though the presence of the material in Groveside Cave does not itself provide the recipe. A cookbook must be found elsewhere before the relevant crafting option becomes available.

Collectibles directory

Some walkthroughs report three Glowstones, while other summaries list Glowstone without a quantity. The safe conclusion is that Glowstone is present in the cave, but the exact total should be checked against the player’s version and pickup state rather than treated as fully resolved from the available summaries.

Hazards and secrets

The wolves are the main hazard

Groveside Cave has no environmental trap comparable to poison pools, collapsing floors or moving machinery. Its primary danger is the combination of darkness, narrow approach routes and several fast wolves attacking together.

The most common mistake is to assume the first visible wolf is the only threat. Clear the chamber methodically and check the far side before collecting items.

Search before the fog gate

The fog gate is close enough to the central chamber that a player can easily enter it before collecting everything. The Cracked Pot, Golden Rune [1] and Glowstones are all more useful when obtained before the boss, particularly on a first playthrough.

No hidden branch is confirmed

The available location guides describe the cave as a short passage from the wolf den to the boss cavern. They do not establish an illusory wall, alternate exit, secret NPC room, lift or branching treasure route. The cave should not be expanded beyond its documented chambers without direct in-game verification.

Lore and environmental reading

Groveside Cave offers only limited explicit lore, but its setting suggests a layered occupation. The cave contains remains of a fire-based camp or encampment, while wolves now use the chamber as a den. One location summary interprets this as a former Godrick Soldier camp, though the game does not give the interior a separate named military facility.

The Beastman’s presence is more striking. Farum Azula is geographically distant from this early Limgrave cave, yet the Beastman enemy appears here and in Dragonbarrow. The game does not provide a direct explanation in Groveside Cave, so the safest reading is that the encounter introduces the player to a beastly warrior type whose wider significance is developed elsewhere.

The cave also quietly introduces several recurring design ideas:

These are design and thematic observations rather than confirmed statements about the cave’s history.

Progression and missability

Groveside Cave is available from the beginning of the open world and has no known progression lock. Its boss does not need to be defeated to enter Stormveil Castle, reach another region or advance a main quest.

The cave’s fixed rewards are not tied to a quest stage in the researched guides. The Beastman encounter remains optional, and the Flamedrake Talisman is obtained whenever that boss is defeated.

Progression directory

The cave can therefore be safely left for later if the Beastman is too difficult. Conversely, completing it early gives a modest rune reward, crafting capacity and a defensive talisman.

Nearby connections

Groveside Cave is part of a dense early-game cluster in western Limgrave, but the neighbouring locations are separate.

The most useful practical connection is to the Church of Elleh. It is close enough to serve as a familiar reference point, while Groveside Cave’s own Site of Grace provides the better checkpoint once the entrance has been found.
