Guardians' Garrison

Guardian's Garrison, usually written with the singular possessive in Elden Ring, is a small fortified outpost in the Mountaintops of the Giants.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • Guardians’ Garrison is an optional fort in the Mountaintops of the Giants, south of the Whiteridge Road Site of Grace.
  • Its principal named encounter is Chief Guardian Arghanthy, who drops the One-Eyed Shield.
  • The Giant’s Prayerbook is in a chest at the top of a tower, but the route requires using a broken rampart and external scaffolding rather than simply climbing through the main building.
  • The Ash of War Prelate’s Charge is obtained from a scarab outside the fort, near a large wooden or thorn-covered structure. It is associated with the garrison route but is not inside the fort proper.
  • There is no Site of Grace inside the garrison The practical checkpoints are Whiteridge Road before the fort and Giants’ Gravepost beyond the chain crossing.
  • The fort is not required for access to the Giant’s Forge or the main story, although the prayerbook and shield may be valuable depending on the build.

About this guide

Scope: Elden Ring base game, Mountaintops of the Giants. Spoiler level: Moderate to major spoilers for this optional fort, its named enemy and nearby progression. Status: Research-based guide. The garrison itself is a compact optional fort rather than a broad region. Nearby locations such as Whiteridge Road, the Giants’ Gravepost, the chain crossing and the Fire Giant’s arena are treated as neighbouring connections, not as parts of Guardians’ Garrison.

Overview

Guardians’ Garrison is an optional fortified outpost in the eastern Mountaintops of the Giants. It stands on the route between the frozen lake and the chain crossing towards the Giant’s Forge, overlooking the approach to the area associated with the Fire Giant. The fort is occupied by Fire Monks, Flame Guardians, dogs and other hostile creatures, and is commanded by the hostile NPC Chief Guardian Arghanthy.

The garrison is small, but it contains several worthwhile rewards: the One-Eyed Shield, the Giant’s Prayerbook, a Smithing Stone [7], the Ash of War: Prelate’s Charge, and a selection of minor materials and runes. Its most important item is the prayerbook, which unlocks two high-level fire incantations when delivered to a suitable prayerbook teacher.

Boundaries and neighbouring places

Guardians’ Garrison is the enclosed fort and its immediate exterior approach. It should not be confused with the entire stretch of road between the frozen lake and the Giant’s Forge.

Nearby but separate

The fort is sometimes described as being “on the way to the Giant’s Forge”. That is a route description, not an indication that the Forge or the Fire Giant arena belongs to the garrison.

Geography and purpose

The garrison occupies a narrow, elevated shelf in the snowy Mountaintops. Its position makes strategic sense within the setting: it controls one of the approaches towards the eastern end of the region and watches the route leading towards the land of the Fire Giants and the Giant’s Flame.

Its architecture is more functional than monumental. The lower section consists of an enclosed yard and interior passages, while the upper section uses battlements, towers and wooden platforms. The broken western rampart is not merely scenery. It is the intended route to the fort’s upper, otherwise inaccessible section.

The fort’s defenders are connected with the Fire Monks and the protection of the Giant’s Flame. The description of the Giant’s Prayerbook identifies it as knowledge kept hidden by prelates who monitor the Giant’s Flame, giving the location a direct connection to the fire-worshipping institutions found elsewhere in the game.

Access and routes

From Whiteridge Road

This is the simplest route for a first visit.

The fort can be reached from the Lord Contender’s Evergaol by travelling east down the slope towards Whiteridge Road, then continuing south-east. This is a useful route if the player has already activated the Evergaol or is exploring the northern part of the Mountaintops.

Towards the chain crossing

After leaving or circling the garrison, follow the route towards the large chain spanning the gap. Beyond the chain is the Giants’ Gravepost Site of Grace and the eastern Mountaintops map stele. This route continues towards the Fire Giant’s region, but neither the grace nor the map stele is inside Guardians’ Garrison.

Is Torrent available?

The garrison is an outdoor overworld fort rather than a sealed legacy dungeon. Torrent may be used in the surrounding Mountaintops, but the enclosed interior and the upper platforms are designed for ordinary movement and careful jumping. The broken-wall route is safer on foot because the relevant jumps and scaffolding are confined to a tight space.

From Whiteridge Road

  1. 01
Rest at the Whiteridge Road Site of Grace.
  2. 02
Travel south or south-east towards the fort.
  3. 03
Approach the main entrance and enter the enclosure.
  4. 04
Clear or bypass the defenders in the lower area.
  5. 05
Use the ladder in the south-eastern part of the fort to reach the upper level.
  6. 06
Search the upper ramparts before attempting the hidden route to Arghanthy.
  7. 07
After completing the fort, continue towards the exterior route and the chain crossing.

Subareas

Guardians’ Garrison has no separately named internal districts, but its layout can be divided into practical sections.

1. Main entrance and lower enclosure

The main door leads into the fort’s lower area. This section contains ordinary defenders and provides access to the ladder leading upwards. It is possible to rush through, but clearing the courtyard reduces the chance of being attacked while climbing.

2. Upper ramparts

The first upper level contains Flame Guardians and a long exterior walkway. A Smithing Stone [7] can be collected from a corpse at the end of one of the upper walkways. This is a fixed pickup, not a random enemy drop.

3. Broken western rampart and scaffolding

The important secret route begins near the upper level. Break the crates near the broken section of wall and drop or jump onto the wooden scaffolding outside. Follow the platforms around the exterior of the fort. This leads to the upper landing where Chief Guardian Arghanthy is stationed.

This route is easy to miss because the obvious stairs and interior passages do not lead directly to the chief guardian. Several guides specifically identify the broken wall and scaffolding as the intended approach.

4. Arghanthy’s upper landing

The upper landing contains the named encounter with Chief Guardian Arghanthy. Two dogs are reported in or around the nearby tower approach, so entering the area without checking the side tower can result in a distracting surprise during the fight.

5. Prayerbook tower

After defeating Arghanthy, enter the tower he guards and climb the ladder. A chest at the top contains the Giant’s Prayerbook. The chest is the final major objective inside the fort.

---

Residents, factions and defenders

Guardians’ Garrison has no friendly residents, merchants or quest-giving NPCs. All named and ordinary occupants are hostile.

Factional presence

The fort is associated with the Fire Monks and their fire-oriented guardians. The location’s defenders support the broader religious and military network that protects the Giant’s Flame.

Canonical faction or group names relevant to the location:

The term “Thorn Sorcerer” is commonly used for the blood-thorn spellcasters found in the Mountaintops. Their presence is part of the fort’s hostile population, although not every directory gives an identical breakdown of the local encounter group. The major practical point is that the fort combines fire-themed melee enemies with ranged or spellcasting support.

---

Enemies and named encounter

Chief Guardian Arghanthy

Chief Guardian Arghanthy is a hostile NPC and the garrison’s principal named defender. He is encountered on the upper exterior landing reached through the broken-wall scaffolding route. Defeating him awards the One-Eyed Shield.

Arghanthy uses the same general style of heavy fire-themed equipment and ranged pressure associated with the garrison’s guardians. The arena is more dangerous because of the nearby tower and surrounding drop-offs than because it is a formal fog-gate boss arena. Pulling the dogs away first, if possible, makes the encounter easier to manage.

Practical advice

Arghanthy is an optional hostile NPC, not a required story boss. His defeat does not unlock the main route to the Fire Giant, but it is necessary if the player wants the One-Eyed Shield.

Ordinary enemies

The following enemy names are associated with the garrison and its immediate fort route:

Different location directories group the ordinary enemies slightly differently, particularly where the exterior approach is concerned. The consistent core is the presence of Fire Monks, Flame Guardians, dogs and small vermin, with thorn-oriented spellcasters appearing around the wider garrison route.

---

Items and collectibles

Fixed major rewards

The prayerbook itself is a key item and is not a spell. It must be handed to a prayerbook teacher before those incantations can be purchased. The book is in a chest at the top of the tower rather than on Arghanthy’s body.

Minor fixed and gathered items

Location directories and walkthroughs record the following additional pickups around the fort and its immediate approach:

The exact placement of minor materials can be easy to confuse with the nearby road and exterior camp. The major fixed items are more consistently documented than every crafting-material pickup. The guide should therefore treat the list above as the verified local loot pool, while using the route below for the most important acquisitions.

Enemy drops and farming

The Fire Monk enemies can drop parts of the Fire Monk Set, including pieces of their equipment, but these are enemy drops rather than guaranteed location rewards. The Fire Prelate Set is also associated with Fire Prelate enemies in the wider Mountaintops and should not be presented as a guaranteed chest reward inside Guardians’ Garrison.

Ash of War: Prelate’s Charge

The Ash of War: Prelate’s Charge comes from a scarab in the area outside the fort, on the route towards the chain crossing. It is commonly included in Guardians’ Garrison walkthroughs because the scarab is encountered immediately after clearing the fort and following the local route.

The scarab is a moving, timed encounter. If it disappears, resting at a Site of Grace or reloading the area can allow another attempt. The Ash of War is not obtained from Arghanthy and is not inside the prayerbook chest.

---

To obtain it

  1. 01
Leave the fort or continue around its exterior.
  2. 02
Look for the large wooden or thorn-covered structure near the path.
  3. 03
Locate the scarab attached to the structure.
  4. 04
    Kill it before it escapes.
  5. 05
Collect the Ash of War from the drop.

Walkthrough

This route follows the fort’s intended vertical progression and avoids treating the upper prayerbook tower as a straightforward interior staircase.

Fast route for the Giant’s Prayerbook

This is quicker, but it is riskier because enemies may remain below and the scaffolding provides limited room for retreat.

Hazards and secrets

The broken-wall route

The most important secret is also the most practical one. The western wall is broken, but the gap does not initially look like a conventional doorway. Breaking the nearby crates reveals the route onto the external platforms. The upper fort is therefore partly designed as a visual exploration puzzle rather than a purely linear interior.

Drop-offs

Several upper sections have open edges. Dodging aggressively during the Arghanthy encounter can send the player off the scaffolding. Fighting in the wider landing, after removing nearby dogs, is safer than standing on the narrowest platforms.

Fire damage

Fire Monks and Flame Guardians use fire-themed attacks. Fire resistance, physical mitigation and a willingness to interrupt slow attacks are useful. Players relying on fire damage should expect reduced efficiency against some local defenders.

The scarab can escape

Prelate’s Charge is missable during a single attempt if the scarab is not killed quickly. This is not a permanent progression lock, but the encounter must be repeated after reloading the area if the player wants another chance.

---

Progression and missability

Guardians’ Garrison is optional and has no known questline that changes its layout or population through ordinary base-game progression. The fort can be cleared before or after visiting the Fire Giant, provided the player can reach the Mountaintops.

There is no ordinary NPC questgiver, merchant or purchasable property in the location. The garrison is an enemy-held fort whose meaningful activities are exploration, combat and item collection.
