Key takeaways
- Hermit’s Shack is a small open-world landmark, not a dungeon and not a sub-area of Hermit Village.
- It is found on southern Mt Gelmir, south-west of Fort Laiedd and along the route towards Hermit Village.
- The main fixed reward inside the building is the Roiling Magma sorcery.
- The nearby Runebear can break a stone statue, revealing three Smithing Stone [6].
- The shack has no Site of Grace, merchant, quest NPC, boss arena or dungeon entrance.
- The nearby Runebear and the route towards Hermit Village should be treated as neighbouring content, not automatically as part of the shack itself.
About this guide
Scope: Elden Ring base game, excluding Shadow of the Erdtree, Nightreign, and the separate Hermit Merchant’s Shack. Spoilers: This guide discusses regional landmarks, loot and nearby encounters.
Overview
Hermit’s Shack is a small landmark on the southern side of Mt. Gelmir, within the wider volcanic region of the Altus Plateau. It is an abandoned wooden hut occupied by Demi-Humans, with a nearby Runebear and a breakable stone statue containing upgrade materials.
The shack itself is easy to mistake for part of Hermit Village, which lies farther along the same route towards Primeval Sorcerer Azur. The two locations are separate. Hermit’s Shack contains a spell and a small group of enemies, while Hermit Village is a much larger settlement with its own enemies, boss encounter and progression relevance. Mt. Gelmir’s regional listings treat Hermit’s Shack, Craftsman’s Shack, Hermit Village and Volcano Manor as distinct landmarks.
Location and boundaries
Hermit’s Shack stands on the lower southern slopes of Mt. Gelmir, in the rugged volcanic ground below the route leading towards Hermit Village. The wider region is characterised by lava flows, steep rock faces, demi-human settlements and the remnants of the war around Volcano Manor. Mt. Gelmir itself includes several separate landmarks and dungeons, including Fort Laiedd, Hermit’s Shack, Craftsman’s Shack, Hermit Village, Corpse-Stench Shack and Volcano Manor.
For practical purposes, the Hermit’s Shack area consists of:
It does not include the following neighbouring locations:
This distinction matters because guides sometimes describe the entire southern Gelmir route together. The shack is a stopping point on that route, not a name for the whole settlement chain.
Named directory: the immediate area
Only Hermit’s Shack belongs to the location covered by this guide. The other names are neighbouring connections.

How to reach Hermit’s Shack
Route from Seethewater Terminus
The most direct approach begins at the Seethewater Terminus Site of Grace, on the western side of Mt. Gelmir.
Several route guides describe the shack as lying beyond the magma-filled area near Fort Laiedd and identify Roiling Magma as the item inside one of the huts along this southern route.
Route from Craftsman’s Shack
If you have already activated the Craftsman’s Shack Site of Grace, the shack is easier to revisit. Travel back through the lower southern Gelmir path, keeping close to the mountain wall and following the buildings and demi-human activity. Hermit’s Shack is the lower hut associated with the Roiling Magma pickup, while Craftsman’s Shack and the other nearby buildings are separate landmarks.
Important navigation warning
Do not follow the higher paths around Mt. Gelmir expecting them to lead directly to Hermit’s Shack. Some upper routes move towards Volcano Manor or the mountain’s other campsites. The reliable approach is the lower route around the volcanic basin, beginning from Seethewater Terminus or Craftsman’s Shack.
---
Route from Seethewater Terminus
- 01Leave Seethewater Terminus and travel south-east along the volcanic route.
- 02Follow the path around the lava-covered ground rather than trying to climb directly towards the upper parts of Mt. Gelmir.
- 03Continue past the area associated with Fort Laiedd and the lava flows.
- 04Watch for the route leading towards the lower wooden structures on the southern side of the mountain.
- 05Hermit’s Shack is reached before the larger Hermit Village area.
Geography and landmarks
Hermit’s Shack is a simple, damaged timber building set among rough volcanic terrain. It is visually similar to several other shacks in Elden Ring, but it has no merchant, Site of Grace or quest character.
The most important nearby landmark is the stone statue. It is visibly cracked and contains Smithing Stones, but the player cannot open it by attacking it normally. The nearby Runebear must hit the statue. Once the statue is broken, the upgrade materials become available. The Runebear’s ability to destroy the statue is the defining environmental puzzle of the location.
Named directory: buildings and scenery
The cracked statue is a scenery and loot object rather than a separate named map location.

Enemies and combat
Demi-Humans
The shack is occupied by Demi-Humans. They are ordinary enemies rather than a named faction, boss or quest group. The main danger is their tendency to attack together in the confined space around the building. Some may be easier to eliminate from horseback or with ranged attacks before entering the hut.
A practical approach is to draw enemies out one at a time. The shack’s doorway and surrounding rocks can interfere with the camera, so fighting in the open clearing is generally safer than immediately committing to the interior.
Runebear
A Runebear roams near the shack. It is not the boss of Hermit’s Shack, and the area has no fog gate or boss health bar. Its importance is environmental: it can destroy the nearby cracked statue and expose the Smithing Stone [6] loot.
The Runebear is extremely dangerous if fought early. It has wide-reaching swipes, rapid lunges and strong tracking at close range. You do not need to kill it to collect the statue’s contents. Lure it towards the statue, position yourself so that it attacks through or beside the object, then retrieve the items once the statue breaks.

Not present at Hermit’s Shack
The nearby Runebear should not be confused with the Demi-Human Queen encountered in Hermit Village. That is a separate nearby encounter.

Items and collectibles
Roiling Magma
The shack’s principal reward is the Roiling Magma sorcery. It is found on a corpse inside the building. The spell belongs to the Magma Sorceries and fires a lump of condensed magma that explodes after a delay. Charging increases its potency and delays the explosion further.
The spell’s fire damage gives it a useful role for Intelligence builds that want a non-Magic damage option. It can also reset Frostbite buildup because it deals fire damage, although that application is a broader spell mechanic rather than a special property of Hermit’s Shack.
Smithing Stone [6]
These are not inside the hut. They are obtained by causing the nearby Runebear to strike the statue. The stones are fixed loot, not random drops.
Volcanic Stone
Volcanic Stone can be found as a crafting material in the wider volcanic surroundings. It is not the principal unique reward of the shack, and the exact loose-material placements should not be conflated with the fixed Roiling Magma pickup or the statue’s Smithing Stones.

Walkthrough
If you do not want to fight the Runebear
The Runebear does not need to die. Use Torrent to maintain distance, ride around the statue and wait for the creature’s attacks to connect. Avoid standing directly in front of it, since its forward swipes and charge can catch the player even while mounted.
If the statue breaks but the Runebear remains aggressive, ride away, rest at a Site of Grace and return later. The statue’s contents do not depend on killing the creature.
Exploration checklist

Safe collection route
- 01Approach the shack on Torrent and circle the clearing once.
- 02Pull the Demi-Humans away from the doorway.
- 03Kill them or ride past them and enter the building.

- 05Leave the hut and locate the nearby cracked stone statue.
- 06Find the Runebear in the surrounding terrain.
- 07Lure the Runebear towards the statue.
- 08Stand at a safe distance and wait for one of its attacks to hit the statue.

- 10Either escape towards the next Site of Grace or continue towards Hermit Village.
Nearby connections
Hermit’s Shack is useful mainly because it sits on a larger exploration route through southern Mt. Gelmir.
Fort Laiedd
Fort Laiedd lies to the north-west and is associated with the conflict between Leyndell’s forces and the Fire Monks. It is a separate fortified location with its own enemies and loot. Mt. Gelmir’s regional history presents this area as part of the scarred battlefield surrounding Volcano Manor.
Craftsman’s Shack
Craftsman’s Shack is another nearby landmark and Site of Grace. It is a useful checkpoint for exploring the lower Gelmir route, but it is not a child area of Hermit’s Shack.
Hermit Village
Hermit Village lies farther along the southern route. It contains Demi-Humans, sorcerers and a separate boss encounter. The village is also the route to Primeval Sorcerer Azur, whose location is important to Sorceress Sellen’s questline and the acquisition of Comet Azur. The regional guide distinguishes Hermit Village from Hermit’s Shack and places Azur beyond the village area.
Volcano Manor
Volcano Manor is the dominant landmark of Mt. Gelmir, but it is not directly accessible through Hermit’s Shack. The shack is on the lower outer route, while the manor occupies the upper volcanic area.

Characters, services and progression
Hermit’s Shack has no resident NPC, merchant or quest giver.

The area has no known progression lock. You can collect Roiling Magma and the statue loot whenever you reach the shack. The relevant missability risk is not at the shack itself, but in confusing it with the nearby Hermit Village and missing content farther along the Gelmir route.

Lore and atmosphere
Hermit’s Shack has little direct item lore of its own, but its setting reinforces Mt. Gelmir’s broader themes. The mountain is a place of exile, dangerous experimentation and social collapse. The Magma Sorceries found in the region are tied to ancient Gelmir traditions that were revived and developed under Rykard. Roiling Magma’s description specifically links the spell to sorceries developed from Mt. Gelmir’s magma and to Rykard’s restoration of older hexes as practical sorcery.
The shack’s ruined condition and Demi-Human occupation also fit the environmental pattern of Mt. Gelmir. It is not presented as a functioning home or community. Instead, it is another abandoned human structure absorbed into the mountain’s hostile ecosystem.
The nearby Hermit Village develops this idea further, but it should be read as a separate settlement with its own history and inhabitants rather than as an extension of the shack.

Common points of confusion
Is Hermit’s Shack the same as Hermit Merchant’s Shack?
No. Hermit’s Shack is on Mt. Gelmir and contains Roiling Magma. Hermit Merchant’s Shack is in the Capital Outskirts and contains a merchant. The merchant can also be replaced temporarily by a Bell Bearing Hunter encounter at night.
Is Hermit’s Shack part of Hermit Village?
No. They are separate landmarks on the same southern Mt. Gelmir route. Hermit’s Shack is the small hut with Demi-Humans and the Runebear nearby. Hermit Village is farther along and has more extensive settlement content.
Is there a boss at Hermit’s Shack?
No. The Runebear is a dangerous nearby enemy, but there is no boss arena or boss reward tied to the shack itself.
Do I have to kill the Runebear to get the Smithing Stones?
No. You only need to make it break the statue. You can leave immediately afterwards.
Can the statue be opened by the player?
Not directly. The intended solution is to lure a large enemy, here the Runebear, into striking it.
