About this guide

Base game scope. This guide covers Highroad Cave itself, its Site of Grace, internal chambers, loot, enemies and Guardian Golem arena. The nearby Saintsbridge, the Limgrave river, the outdoor giant land octopuses and the surrounding road are treated as neighbouring connections, not as part of the cave.

Overview

Highroad Cave is an optional cave dungeon in northern Limgrave, hidden beneath the river east of Saintsbridge. Its entrance is easy to miss because it is not approached from the road above. Instead, the player must descend to the watercourse and travel north along the riverbank until the cave mouth appears in the rock wall. The dungeon is considerably more elaborate than its small map icon suggests, combining wolf-filled tunnels, vertical drops, waterfalls, bats, land octopuses and the remains of an ancient stone structure.

The cave’s final chamber contains a Guardian Golem, an optional boss associated with the ancient ruins scattered throughout Elden Ring. Defeating it awards the Blue Dancer Charm, while the route to the boss contains the Shamshir, early Smithing Stones, runes, crafting materials and a multiplayer item.

Highroad Cave is not connected to another dungeon, does not contain a quest NPC or merchant, and has no progression requirement. It is best understood as a self-contained Limgrave side dungeon with one internal Site of Grace, one boss arena and several optional side paths.

Geography and boundaries

Highroad Cave lies in the northern part of Limgrave, beneath the river that runs below Saintsbridge. From the surface, the entrance is concealed in the rock wall near the northern end of the river channel. The cave is therefore separate from Saintsbridge itself and from the open-water encounter with the giant land octopuses outside.

The interior is a descending cave network rather than a broad settlement or ruined town. Its first sections are natural tunnels with moss-covered walls and wolves. Deeper inside, the environment opens into a large cavern with waterfalls, a circular stone platform and a toppled pillar. These black-stone structures are consistent with the ancient ruins associated with Guardian Golems, although the cave does not provide a named historical account of its builders.

Included areas

The following belong to Highroad Cave for the purposes of this guide:

Nearby but separate

These places and encounters are outside the cave’s boundaries:

This distinction matters because the cave entrance cannot be reached directly from Saintsbridge at ground level. The player must descend to the river first.

Access and routes

From Saintsbridge

The most direct approach begins at the Saintsbridge Site of Grace.

A running jump from Saintsbridge itself is possible with Torrent, but the safer route is to use the nearby descent and Spirit Spring rather than trying to land directly in the water. The entrance lies in the rock wall on the left-hand side as the river narrows and ends.

Preparation

Highroad Cave is dark enough that a torch or lantern is strongly recommended. The light is particularly useful in the wolf tunnels, where enemies can be concealed around corners, and in the waterfall cavern, where the player needs to judge several drops and a difficult jump.

Fire is especially useful against the land octopuses, while the Guardian Golem is more vulnerable to attacks aimed at its legs than to indiscriminate blows against its upper body.

From Saintsbridge

  1. 01
Travel towards the river beneath Saintsbridge.
  2. 02
Use the nearby rocks and Spirit Spring to descend safely from the upper ground.
  3. 03
Ride north through the shallow water.
  4. 04
Avoid or defeat the giant land octopuses outside the cave.
  5. 05
Look for the entrance in the rock wall near the northern end of the river.
  6. 06
Enter and activate the Highroad Cave Site of Grace.

Internal layout and subareas

Entrance and first descent

The Site of Grace is immediately inside the cave. From there, the passage leads to a large vertical shaft with staggered platforms. Do not drop straight down. Move from ledge to ledge, using controlled falls, jumps or rolls as needed.

The first descent is relatively forgiving, but it establishes the main danger of the dungeon: the route is vertical, and many apparent shortcuts lead to death rather than a lower platform.

First wolf chamber

At the bottom of the first shaft is an illuminated chamber occupied by three wolves. The larger white wolf is stronger than the others. It is safer to kill the two ordinary wolves first, then deal with the larger one.

Several side paths branch from this chamber. One contains additional Cave Moss, while another leads to a Golden Rune [1] guarded by wolves. Collecting this rune before descending further is worthwhile, especially for an early character.

Lower wolf tunnels

The next shaft is longer and has platforms spaced farther apart. After reaching the bottom, the route divides.

One branch is a short dead end containing Cave Moss. The other leads towards a lit area with sleeping wolves. These enemies can generally be approached quietly, allowing the player to remove them before the whole group becomes active.

A side route behind destructible barrels leads to a ledge guarded by another wolf and a corpse carrying an Arteria Leaf. Return to the main chamber afterwards.

The following chamber contains four wolves that remain passive until approached. Pulling them one at a time is safer than rushing into the middle of the room. Once they are defeated, collect Fire Grease from the corpse.

Waterfall cavern

Beyond the wolf tunnels, Highroad Cave opens into its most distinctive area: a large cavern containing waterfalls, bats and old stonework. The route is not immediately obvious because the player must descend around the outside of the cavern rather than simply follow the central waterfall.

Stay to the left and drop down towards the lower levels. Two bats attack from the nearby ledges. A further ledge contains Smithing Stone [1].

Continue down towards the water. A small opening contains Smithing Stone [2], while the route beneath the waterfall leads to Golden Rune [4]. Small land octopuses occupy this section. They are dangerous at close range but can be avoided if the player is only interested in reaching the boss.

Shamshir platform

The cave’s most easily missed reward is the Shamshir, found on a circular stone platform in the waterfall cavern.

The jump is tight, and falling into the lower water is fatal. A Stake of Marika near the cavern provides a nearby retry point, so it is sensible to attempt the jump before continuing towards the boss.

Do not confuse the circular platform with the boss arena. It is an intermediate ruin feature, and the Shamshir is obtained before the final passage.

Giant land octopus passage

After crossing the stone platform and following the upper route, the player reaches a passage containing a Giant Land Octopus. This enemy is optional if the objective is simply to reach the boss, although defeating it may produce a Land Octopus Ovary and other ordinary enemy drops.

The creature can be staggered by heavy attacks. Fire is effective, and striking its vulnerable body sections after a stagger creates an opportunity for a critical hit. A Furlcalling Finger Remedy lies on a ledge nearby.

The route forward is hidden behind the waterfall. From the ledge, keep close to the wall and drop down onto the rocky path below. Follow it beneath the waterfall to reach the boss fog.

Shamshir platform: To reach it

  1. 01
Return to the larger waterfall area.
  2. 02
Locate the collapsed stone pillar extending towards the circular platform.
  3. 03
Take a running start from the adjoining ledge.
  4. 04
Jump from the waterfall side onto the base of the fallen pillar.
  5. 05
Follow the pillar to the circular platform.
  6. 06
Defeat the bats on the platform.
  7. 07
    Loot the Shamshir.

Enemies

Directory: named enemy types within Highroad Cave

Wolves dominate the first half of the dungeon. Their main threat is not individual strength but the way they can surround the player in narrow passages. The larger wolf in the first chamber is tougher, but the groups of ordinary wolves are more dangerous if allowed to attack together.

Giant Bats occupy the waterfall cavern and attack from above. Their flying movement makes them awkward targets for short weapons. Lock-on attacks, thrown weapons, bows or a weapon with a broad vertical swing can make them easier to manage.

Land Octopuses appear in the deeper, wetter sections. Their tentacle attacks have considerable reach, so lingering directly in front of them is risky. Fire and stagger damage are useful tools.

Boss: Guardian Golem

The Guardian Golem waits beyond the final waterfall. This is an optional boss encounter, and defeating it is not required for progression through Limgrave or the wider game.

The safest general strategy is to stay near its legs, avoid standing directly beneath its stomps and attack after its larger swings. Heavy attacks and jump attacks can help build stagger. When the golem falls, strike the exposed vulnerable area for a critical hit if possible.

The arena is broad enough for melee combat, but the boss’s sweeping attacks and stomps punish careless positioning. Ranged characters can create distance, although the arena gives the golem room to approach quickly.

Reward

The talisman increases attack power when the player has a low equipment load. It is particularly relevant to light, evasive builds, though its usefulness depends on how much equipment the character is carrying. The boss reward is fixed rather than random.

Items and collectibles

Fixed loot directory

The fixed loot list is supported by the dungeon walkthrough and location directories.

Enemy drops and farming materials

Enemy drops are not the same as fixed dungeon rewards. Wolves may provide Thin Animal Bones and Lump of Flesh, while land octopuses can provide Land Octopus Ovary. The Giant Land Octopus may also drop a larger rune reward and additional octopus-related materials. These are ordinary enemy drops and should not be treated as guaranteed chest or corpse rewards.

Crafting materials

Cave Moss is useful for several bolus recipes, while Arteria Leaf is used in a number of meat and aromatic recipes. The specific crafting value depends on which cookbooks and recipes the character has already obtained elsewhere.

Checkpoints and facilities

Highroad Cave Site of Grace

The Site of Grace is found just inside the entrance. It provides the normal Site of Grace functions, including resting, refilling flasks, changing memorised spells, managing Ashes of War and travelling to other discovered Sites of Grace.

Stake of Marika

A Stake of Marika stands near the waterfall cavern and is especially useful for the Shamshir jump. If the player dies while attempting to reach the circular platform, the stake can reduce the need to repeat the earlier wolf and bat sections.

No merchants or NPC services

Highroad Cave contains no merchant, quest-giver, smith, summoning character or other ordinary NPC. The Furlcalling Finger Remedy is a collectible item, not a multiplayer service provided by an NPC.

Suggested exploration route

For a first visit, the most efficient full-clear route is:

If the priority is the boss rather than a full clear, skip the Shamshir platform and avoid unnecessary fights in the lower chambers. If the priority is weapon upgrading, the Smithing Stones should be collected before leaving.

Suggested exploration route: steps

  1. 01
Activate the Highroad Cave Site of Grace.
  2. 02
    Descend the first shaft carefully.
  3. 03
    Clear the first wolf chamber.
  4. 04
Collect the Golden Rune [1] and nearby Cave Moss.
  5. 05
    Descend the second shaft.
  6. 06
Take the side passage for the Arteria Leaf.
  7. 07
Clear the four-wolf chamber and collect Fire Grease.
  8. 08
    Enter the waterfall cavern.
  9. 09
    Collect Smithing Stone [1].
  10. 10
Drop towards the water and collect Smithing Stone [2] and Golden Rune [4].
  11. 11
Use the Stake of Marika while attempting the collapsed-pillar jump.
  12. 12
Collect the Shamshir from the circular platform.
  13. 13
Continue past the land octopus and collect the Furlcalling Finger Remedy.
  14. 14
Gather Silver Fireflies near the boss route.
  15. 15
    Defeat the Guardian Golem.
  16. 16
Collect the Blue Dancer Charm and return through the cave or travel from the boss arena once the encounter is complete.

Hazards and secrets

The water can kill you

Several drops in the waterfall cavern lead to instant death. The lower water is not a safe landing surface, particularly around the central stone platform. Treat the collapsed pillar as a precision jump rather than a normal traversal route.

The Shamshir is deliberately off the main path

The Shamshir is not reached by following the obvious route to the boss. The player must recognise the fallen pillar as a bridge and make a running jump from the waterfall ledge. It is the cave’s main exploration secret.

Sleeping and passive enemies

Several wolves do not attack immediately. This is useful rather than merely cosmetic. Use the delay to separate enemies and avoid fighting an entire pack in a narrow tunnel.

The boss can be bypassed until prepared

The Guardian Golem is at the end of a linear route, but nothing in Highroad Cave forces the player to defeat it immediately. The player can collect the accessible loot, leave, improve equipment elsewhere and return later. No known quest deadline or world-state change removes the cave’s fixed rewards in a normal base-game playthrough.

Lore and environmental reading

Highroad Cave is notable for the contrast between its natural tunnels and its buried stone architecture. The cave begins as a wildlife-filled underground passage, but the waterfall chamber reveals deliberate construction, including a circular platform and large stone pillars. A Guardian Golem protects these ruins, echoing the placement of similar golems near ancient structures elsewhere in the Lands Between.

The location offers no named inscription or direct historical explanation. Any interpretation beyond the visible ruins and the Guardian Golem is therefore environmental inference rather than explicit local exposition. The most secure reading is that the cave has swallowed or exposed part of an older ruin complex, and that the golem remains as its guardian.

The Blue Dancer Charm also links the location indirectly to the wider mythology of the blind swordsman and the ancient rot god. That connection belongs primarily to the item’s description and broader lore, not to a character or event found inside Highroad Cave.
