Note

Base game guide. This article covers the named dungeon Impaler’s Catacombs in the Weeping Peninsula, including its internal rooms, traps, enemies, loot and boss. It does not include nearby Oridys’s Rise, Beside the Crater-Pocked Glade, the Bridge of Sacrifice or any similarly named catacomb.

Overview

Impaler’s Catacombs is an optional catacomb dungeon on the north-eastern coast of the Weeping Peninsula. It is a compact but unusually vertical dungeon built around a rising wooden platform, a spiked ceiling and a flooded lower level inhabited by Putrid Corpses. The dungeon’s main challenge is not a complicated branching map but recognising that the apparent dead end is a trap which also provides the route downwards.

The dungeon culminates in an Erdtree Burial Watchdog accompanied by four Imps. Defeating the boss awards Demi-Human Ashes, making the catacombs particularly worthwhile for early characters who want a multi-spirit summon. The dungeon also contains Prattling Pate “Please help”, Grave Glovewort, Ghost Glovewort, Grave Violet and Root Resin.

Location and boundaries

Impaler’s Catacombs is carved into the cliff face in the far north-eastern part of the Weeping Peninsula. It lies east of the road leading from the Bridge of Sacrifice and near the coastline. The entrance is not in the centre of a settlement or ruin. Instead, it is cut into the side of the elevated land overlooking the sea.

The dungeon’s local surroundings include several distinct locations that are not part of Impaler’s Catacombs:

No separate named sub-area, side dungeon, settlement or NPC hub is established inside the catacombs. The apparent “sewer” or “basement” areas are internal sections of the same dungeon, not independent locations.

The first upper chamber, containing Imps and the closed boss-door route.
  3. 03
    The rising-platform trap room.
  4. 04
    The lower flooded section.
  5. 05
The corpse-filled chamber containing the Prattling Pate.

Reaching Impaler’s Catacombs

From the Bridge of Sacrifice

After crossing the Bridge of Sacrifice into the Weeping Peninsula, travel north-east along the elevated eastern side of the peninsula. The entrance is above the coastal cliffs rather than down at the beach.

Game8’s route description specifically recommends starting from Castle Morne Rampart, using the Spirit Spring and passing Oridys’s Rise and Beside the Crater-Pocked Glade before following the cliff towards the entrance.

Is the dungeon accessible early?

Yes. Impaler’s Catacombs does not require a Stonesword Key, a Great Rune, a story boss victory or an NPC quest step. Its difficulty is suitable for a character exploring the Weeping Peninsula soon after reaching it, although the narrow boss room and the accompanying Imps can punish an under-equipped character.

Spirit summons can be used in the boss arena if the usual summoning conditions are met. A summon is especially useful for drawing the Imps away from the player while the Watchdog is repositioning.

---

From the Bridge of Sacrifice: A practical route is

  1. 01
    Cross the Bridge of Sacrifice.
  2. 02
Continue towards the area around Castle Morne Rampart.
  3. 03
Use the nearby Spirit Spring to gain height where appropriate.
  4. 04
Travel north, passing the region around Oridys’s Rise.
  5. 05
Continue beyond Beside the Crater-Pocked Glade.
  6. 06
Follow the eastern cliff edge towards the sea.
  7. 07
Look for the large headstone and the catacomb entrance cut into the rock face.

Internal layout and subareas

Entrance corridor

The Site of Grace is located at the beginning of the dungeon. From here, the route descends through a short corridor into the main upper section.

The first Imps are positioned to exploit the player’s forward momentum. One may remain still near a corpse while another attacks from the side or drops from above. Imps commonly hide against walls, hang from ceilings or imitate the visual clutter of catacomb rooms, so moving slowly is safer than sprinting through the opening.

Upper chamber and closed boss route

The initial route leads towards the boss door, but the door is locked until the internal lever is pulled. The room also provides access to the platform puzzle.

At this stage, do not assume that the obvious corridor is the complete route. The catacombs deliberately show the player the boss door early, then divert them into the trap room to reach the lower level.

Rising-platform room

The main environmental hazard is a large platform that rises towards a ceiling fitted with spikes. Standing on it for too long causes the platform to lift the player into the spikes, causing severe damage and potentially death.

The platform therefore serves two purposes. It is a trap if treated as a lift, but it is also the mechanism that exposes the route below. Guides consistently identify this platform as the central puzzle of the dungeon.

Lower flooded section

The area beneath the platform leads into a damp, flooded section occupied by Putrid Corpses. These enemies can appear to be harmless bodies until the player approaches, and several may rise in succession.

The lower level is not simply a dead-end loot room. It is the proper route to the ladder and the boss-door lever. Search the floor and side chambers before leaving, as this section contains important fixed pickups, including the dungeon’s Prattling Pate and Ghost Glovewort or Grave Glovewort placements.

Ladder and lever section

After moving through the lower passage, find the ladder and climb to the upper ledge. The lever is located on this elevated route.

Pulling the lever opens the previously locked boss door. A nearby corridor contains an additional Glovewort pickup, after which the player can return towards the boss entrance. The lever is therefore the dungeon’s only progression switch of major importance.

Boss arena

The boss room contains the Erdtree Burial Watchdog and four Imps. The Watchdog variant here has a sword and uses its usual combination of stiff, abrupt movement, leaping attacks and fire breath. The four Imps make the arena much more dangerous than the room’s size suggests.

---

Rising-platform room: The intended solution is

  1. 01
    Step onto the platform.
  2. 02
    Immediately retreat to solid ground.
  3. 03
    Allow the platform to rise.
  4. 04
Move into the opening beneath it.
  5. 05
    Drop to the lower level.

Complete exploration route

The following route is designed to collect the important fixed items while avoiding the platform trap.

---

Complete exploration route: steps

  1. 01
Rest at the Site of Grace. Equip a shield if you are comfortable using guard counters, and consider carrying a healing flask allocation suitable for a close-quarters dungeon.
  2. 02
Enter the first corridor carefully. Check the walls and ceiling for Imps before collecting nearby bodies.
  3. 03
Reach the upper chamber and identify the locked boss door. Do not spend time trying to open it yet.
  4. 04
Take the route towards the rising platform.
  5. 05
Trigger the platform and step away. Do not remain on the platform while it ascends.
  6. 06
Drop into the lower opening. This is the intended route, not a pointless fall.
  7. 07
Clear or bypass the Putrid Corpses. If you are collecting everything, search the flooded chamber before continuing.
  8. 08
Collect Prattling Pate “Please help”. It is on a corpse in the first flooded lower room and is guarded by Putrid Corpses.
  9. 09
Collect the nearby Glovewort and Grave Violet. The exact pickup order is less important than checking the edges of the flooded chamber.
  10. 10
    Continue through the lower passage.
  11. 11
Collect the remaining Glovewort. Grave Glovewort [1] and [2], as well as Ghost Glovewort [2], are reported among the dungeon’s fixed pickups.
  12. 12
    Climb the ladder.
  13. 13
Pull the lever. The boss door opens.
  14. 14
Return towards the boss entrance. Use the opened route and do not assume that the lever room itself is the arena.
  15. 15
Enter the boss room and deal with the Imps first if necessary.
  16. 16
    Defeat the Erdtree Burial Watchdog.
  17. 17
Collect Demi-Human Ashes and return to the Site of Grace or leave through the normal route.

Enemies

Imp

Imps are the dungeon’s most persistent ordinary enemy. They use forked weapons and are placed in ambush positions, including walls, corners and elevated ledges. The main danger is not their individual durability but their ability to attack while the player is focused on a trap or another Imp.

Cat Imp data lists Impaler’s Catacombs as a location for the cat-headed Imp variant and records the dungeon’s Imps as dropping ordinary Imp-related loot such as the Forked Hatchet, although enemy drops are not guaranteed.

Putrid Corpse

Putrid Corpses populate the lower flooded section. They are slow and vulnerable while standing, but they can surround the player if several are allowed to rise at once.

Their presence also explains why the Prattling Pate pickup is not completely free. The item is fixed, but the surrounding encounter is part of the intended hazard.

Boss attendants

The Erdtree Burial Watchdog is accompanied by four Imps. This is a fixed boss-room arrangement rather than a random encounter. The attendants can interrupt healing, stagger the player during a Watchdog attack and make the confined arena difficult to navigate.

---

Boss: Erdtree Burial Watchdog

The Impaler’s Catacombs Watchdog has 1,347 HP and awards 2,400 runes according to Eldenpedia’s location-specific entry. Its reward is Demi-Human Ashes.

The Watchdog’s movement is stiff and unnatural. It may appear to float or stand upright before suddenly lunging. Do not attack simply because it looks inactive. Wait for a committed animation, then strike during the recovery.

Melee advice

A shield and guard counter can work well against the Imps, especially if your weapon has enough poise damage to stagger them. Against the Watchdog, staying beneath or behind it for too long is risky because its body and tail movements can catch a player who assumes the boss is safe.

Short attack strings are preferable to greedy combos. The room is small, so stamina management matters as much as raw damage.

Ranged and spellcasting advice

Ranged characters should use a summon or the arena’s geometry to separate the Imps from the Watchdog. The boss’s fire attack is particularly dangerous if the player remains directly in front of it while trying to cast.

Once the Imps are dead, the Watchdog becomes much easier to manage. Keep enough distance to see the leap animation, but do not retreat so far that the boss corners you against the wall.

Reward: Demi-Human Ashes

Demi-Human Ashes summon five demi-human spirits and require FP to cast. The group includes several smaller demi-humans and larger members with different weapons. The spirits become more aggressive at night, according to the item description and associated data. They are upgraded with Grave Glovewort.

This reward is the principal reason to complete the dungeon. It provides an early group summon that can distract enemies, surround targets and apply pressure from several directions.

---

Recommended order of attack: For most characters, the safest order is

  1. 01
    Enter and immediately create space.
  2. 02
Kill or heavily damage the four Imps.
  3. 03
Keep the Watchdog near the centre of the arena.
  4. 04
Circle rather than backing directly into a wall.
  5. 05
Dodge the Watchdog’s leap and overhead attacks.
  6. 06
When it prepares its fire breath, move laterally or behind it rather than standing in front of its mouths.
  7. 07
Punish the recovery after its attacks, then disengage.

Items and collectibles

Fixed notable items

The exact number of Glovewort placements is described differently by some guides because they group the pickups by room or by item rank. The consistent point is that the dungeon contains multiple Grave Glovewort pickups, at least one Ghost Glovewort [2] placement, and a lower flooded section where several materials can be collected.

Prattling Pate “Please help”

This is a reusable tool rather than a consumable. Using it produces a short voice line saying “Please help”. It has no known quest requirement and can be collected during the first visit to the lower flooded room.

Enemy drops

Enemy drops are not fixed dungeon rewards. Imps may drop items including the Forked Hatchet, but this is a random enemy drop rather than a guaranteed chest or corpse pickup. The same distinction applies to ordinary runes and crafting materials obtained from defeated enemies.

Checkpoints and facilities

Site of Grace

Impaler’s Catacombs is the only confirmed Site of Grace within the dungeon. It is located at the entrance and provides the normal functions of a Site of Grace, including resting, levelling once available, changing memorised spells and managing Spirit Ashes where applicable.

Boss-room summoning

The boss area can support the normal Elden Ring summoning systems when the player is eligible to use them. Spirit Ashes are particularly useful because they can occupy the Imps while the player focuses on clearing the arena.

No shops or NPC services

There is no merchant, blacksmith, quest giver, resident NPC, purchasable property or business inside Impaler’s Catacombs. The dungeon’s “inhabitants” are hostile enemies, not a settlement population.

---

Hazards and secrets

The spiked ceiling

The rising platform is the dungeon’s main lethal trap. Its visual design communicates the danger, but the correct response is not to avoid the platform completely. Trigger it, retreat, then use the opened lower route.

Do not jump into the first opening you see elsewhere in the upper room. The intended drop is beneath the platform after it has risen. Confusion over which hole to use is a common cause of unnecessary deaths.

Ambush placement

Several Imps are positioned so that the player can be attacked while:

Clear the room in sections rather than sprinting through it. If an Imp drops to a lower level, decide whether to pursue it immediately or leave it until the main route is secure.

Putrid Corpse reanimation

The flooded section is dangerous because enemies can appear to be ordinary bodies. Strike suspicious corpses before standing among them, particularly if your health is already reduced by the platform trap.

Boss-room crowding

The Watchdog’s attacks are manageable alone, but the four Imps can force the player into a wall or interrupt a flask animation. If you enter without a summon, prioritise awareness of the Imps over attacking the boss quickly.

Lore and interpretation

The dungeon contains the standard visual language of Elden Ring’s catacombs: burial architecture, spirit-upgrade materials, corpse-filled chambers and an Erdtree Burial Watchdog. Its name refers directly to the impaling mechanism at the centre of the dungeon, where the moving platform drives a victim towards the spikes above.

There is no confirmed in-game statement connecting this dungeon to Messmer the Impaler from Shadow of the Erdtree. The similarity between “Impaler’s Catacombs” and Messmer’s title is a reasonable subject for fan discussion, but it should not be presented as established lore. The Japanese naming and the dungeon’s physical trap support a more direct interpretation based on impalement rather than a confirmed historical link. Fan discussions have also noted the absence of a clear canonical connection.

The Prattling Pate “Please help” fits the game’s recurring motif of voices preserved in clay objects. It is one of a wider set of Prattling Pates scattered across the Lands Between, each producing a different phrase or sound.
