About this guide
Scope: Elden Ring base game, including the exterior approach immediately around the dungeon entrance. The nearby Minor Erdtree and its Putrid Avatar are treated as neighbouring overworld content, not as part of the catacombs proper.
Overview
Minor Erdtree Catacombs is an optional dungeon in western Caelid, close to the Limgrave border. It lies beside the Minor Erdtree east of the Smoldering Church and contains a short but unusually deceptive catacomb route. The dungeon combines ordinary Imp ambushes with Scarlet Rot pools, slimes, vertical shortcuts and a hidden lower section beneath the lift.
Its final encounter is a duo fight against two Erdtree Burial Watchdogs. Completing the dungeon awards Mad Pumpkin Head Ashes, while exploration provides several Grave Gloveworts, an Imp Head (Wolf), a Ghost Glovewort, crafting materials and a Golden Rune.
Location and boundaries
Minor Erdtree Catacombs sits in western Caelid, just east of the Smoldering Church and near the region’s border with Limgrave. From the Smoldering Church, follow the road towards the nearby Minor Erdtree. The entrance is on the right-hand side of the tree’s trunk area. The Putrid Avatar patrolling the exterior is not the dungeon boss and does not need to be defeated to enter.
An alternative approach begins at Rotview Balcony. The Minor Erdtree is visible to the north-east. A Guide Statue near the cliff points towards the general location, although the route down to the tree can be awkward. Tree Guardians may emerge during the approach, and the Putrid Avatar stands near the roots below. You can ride past these enemies and enter the catacombs without clearing the overworld area.
Nearby but separate
The Minor Erdtree and Putrid Avatar are useful navigation landmarks, but they are not subareas of Minor Erdtree Catacombs.

Access and recommended preparation
No key or quest requirement is needed. Once you reach the entrance, open the stone doors and activate the Site of Grace.
The dungeon can be attempted relatively early, but Caelid’s enemies hit hard and the Watchdogs’ delayed attacks can punish low-Vigor characters. A few practical preparations help:
There is no required progression state, NPC quest or faction affiliation associated with the dungeon.
Walkthrough
1. Reach the first lift
From the Site of Grace, descend the stairs. An Imp hangs from the ceiling near the passage and can be attacked from range or lured down. Continue to the lift and ride it to the lower level.
The lift room is the dungeon’s central junction. From here, you can investigate the forward passage, return through the rear route, or later use the lift to access a concealed section underneath it.
2. Open the boss door
Take the passage leading away from the lift. Several Imps occupy the corridor and adjoining room. Watch for ambushes from corners and for an Imp positioned above the next chamber.
At the end of this route, pull the lever. This opens the door to the boss arena. Do not assume that reaching the lever means the dungeon is finished. Several collectibles are located in the opposite route and below the lift.
3. Search the Scarlet Rot pool chamber
Return to the lift room and take the other passage. It leads to a chamber containing a pool of Scarlet Rot. Slimes drop from the ceiling as you enter, while an Imp on an upper ledge can attack with explosive pots.
The centre of the pool contains an Aeonian Butterfly. Grave Glovewort is positioned around the chamber, including Grave Glovewort [3] and Grave Glovewort [5]. Collect the central item only after dealing with, or avoiding, the slimes.
4. Use the lift to reveal the lower section
Return to the lift and activate it without riding it. As the platform rises, a hole opens beneath it. Drop down into this newly accessible section.
An Imp waits below. Continue through another Rot-affected corridor, where further slimes may obstruct the route. A corpse in the rear-left area holds Grave Violet.
The passage eventually leads back towards the boss route, but there is another side path to explore first.
5. Collect the lower and upper items
From the Rot chamber, take the narrow side passage leading upwards. This route contains:
Continue through the ladder route. More Imps occupy the upper corridor, including enemies positioned to surprise you as you enter. The room at the end contains Imp Head (Wolf), a notable armour piece and the dungeon’s most distinctive exploration reward.
From the upper ledge overlooking the Rot chamber, deal with the Imp throwing explosive pots and collect the Sacramental Bud from the corpse. A further Grave Glovewort [5] is also reported in this section.
6. Return to the boss
After collecting the side-route items, drop back towards the lower Rot chamber and return to the lift room. The boss door should now be open because of the lever pulled earlier.
Boss: Erdtree Burial Watchdogs
The boss arena contains two Erdtree Burial Watchdogs. This is a duo encounter rather than the single Watchdog fight found in several other catacombs. One uses a sword while the other carries a staff, creating a mixture of close-range pressure and ranged magical attacks.
Practical strategy
Defeating both bosses grants runes and Mad Pumpkin Head Ashes.
Items and collectibles directory
The following named items are associated with the dungeon in the consulted walkthroughs. Exact quantities of some plant materials may vary between directory formats, so the guide lists the verified item names and their practical locations rather than asserting an unsupported total.
Crafting and consumable materials
The dungeon’s item directory is corroborated by the detailed walkthroughs from Push Square, EIP Gaming and the recorded item route published by 100% Guides.

Enemies and residents
Minor Erdtree Catacombs has no friendly residents, merchants, quest NPCs or summonable named characters inside. Its ordinary enemies are dungeon creatures rather than members of a named faction.
Ordinary enemies
Some sources describe the Rot-chamber enemies as skeletal slimes, while others use the broader enemy description of slimes. They function as hostile creatures that drop into the chamber from above and can overwhelm a player standing in the Scarlet Rot.
Exterior enemy, not part of the catacombs
The Putrid Avatar is a separate overworld encounter. It can be fought for its own reward, but defeating it is not required for the catacombs.

Hazards and secrets
Scarlet Rot
The dungeon’s main environmental threat is the Scarlet Rot found in multiple rooms. The status builds quickly while standing in the pools, and the slimes are deliberately positioned to make careless collection dangerous.
The safest method is to enter briefly, collect a clearly reachable item, and retreat to dry ground. If you have Preserving Boluses, they are especially useful here, but the dungeon can be completed without them by using short exposure windows.
Ceiling ambushes
Imps hang from ceilings throughout the dungeon. Lock onto ceilings before crossing narrow rooms, particularly:
The hidden lift route
The most important navigational secret is beneath the lift. Ride the lift upwards, then step off or activate it remotely so that the platform leaves the shaft. The opening below provides access to the lower section, including the Grave Violet, Golden Rune [4], Ghost Glovewort [4] and Imp Head (Wolf) route.
For a clean full-clear route
- 01Enter and activate the Site of Grace.
- 02Take the lift down.
- 03Explore the forward passage and pull the boss lever.
- 04Return to the lift room.
- 05Search the Rot pool chamber for the Aeonian Butterfly and nearby Grave Gloveworts.
- 06Send the lift upwards without riding it.
- 07Drop into the lower section and collect the Grave Violet.
- 08Take the side passage to the Golden Rune [4], Ghost Glovewort [4] and Grave Glovewort [4].
- 09Climb the ladder and collect Imp Head (Wolf).
- 10Search the upper ledge for the Sacramental Bud and remaining Grave Glovewort.
- 11Return to the boss door.
- 12Defeat both Erdtree Burial Watchdogs and claim Mad Pumpkin Head Ashes.
Lore and significance
The dungeon follows the recurring Elden Ring pattern in which catacombs preserve the dead beneath locations associated with Erdtree burial. The Erdtree Burial Watchdogs serve as stone guardians of these underground tombs, while the presence of Caelid’s Scarlet Rot makes this particular site visibly more corrupted than many of its counterparts.
The dungeon does not contain a named NPC, questline or unique narrative event. Its importance is primarily mechanical: it provides Spirit Ash upgrade materials, an unusual armour piece and a useful early-to-mid-game summon reward.
