Key takeaways
- The mausoleum is not the whole of Mohgwyn Palace Palace Approach Ledge-Road, the blood lake, the giant crow area and the surrounding ruins are neighbouring sections of the wider sub-region.
- There are three important mausoleum checkpoints Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance, Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint and Cocoon of the Empyrean. The latter becomes available after Mohg is defeated.
- White Mask Varré’s quest is the earliest route Completing his Liurnia stages eventually awards the Pureblood Knight’s Medal, which teleports the player to the mausoleum entrance.
- The second route is a Sending Gate in the Consecrated Snowfield It places the player in the wider Mohgwyn Palace area rather than directly inside the mausoleum.
- Mohg’s Remembrance has two rewards Mohgwyn’s Sacred Spear or the Bloodboon incantation. It can also be consumed for runes.
- The boss arena changes after Mohg’s defeat The Cocoon of the Empyrean site of grace appears beyond the arena, and the withered arm beside Miquella’s cocoon becomes the route into the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.

Introduction
The Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum is the principal stronghold of Mohg, Lord of Blood, and the architectural centre of his proposed dynasty. It is an enormous ancient temple built into the western cliffs of Mohgwyn Palace, itself an underground sub-region associated with the Siofra River. The mausoleum was not built by Mohg. It belongs to an older civilisation whose ruins and burial structures survive beneath the Lands Between, while Mohg has appropriated it as the seat of his new blood dynasty.
The location is both a compact dungeon and the final destination of the Mohgwyn Palace route. Its exterior approach contains hostile Albinaurics and blood creatures, while the temple interior is a largely linear passage through ruined halls and a blood-soaked ceremonial complex. At the summit, a lift leads to Mohg’s arena, where the Lord of Blood guards the slumbering Miquella inside the cocoon of the Empyrean.
Although it is optional in the base game, the mausoleum contains one of Elden Ring’s major optional demigod encounters. Defeating Mohg grants a Great Rune and Remembrance, while the arena also becomes the entry point to the downloadable expansion after the relevant base-game conditions are met.
Boundaries and hierarchy
The name “Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum” is used for the temple complex and its boss location. It should not be used as a synonym for the entire Mohgwyn Palace sub-region.
Wider region: Mohgwyn Palace
Mohgwyn Palace is the broad underground area surrounding the mausoleum. It includes the blood lake, the Palace Approach Ledge-Road, the surrounding cliffs, the Albinauric settlement areas and the approach caves. The region has four commonly recognised sites of grace if the post-boss grace is counted: Palace Approach Ledge-Road, Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance, Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint and Cocoon of the Empyrean.
Neighbouring but separate areas
These are connected to the mausoleum but are not part of the temple proper:
Palace Approach Ledge-Road is the usual first checkpoint when entering through the Consecrated Snowfield portal. It overlooks the blood swamp and is populated by Second-Generation Albinaurics, Sanguine Albinaurics and a giant crow.
Geography and architecture
The mausoleum occupies the western side of Mohgwyn Palace, where a monumental temple has been cut into or built against a rocky formation. Its exterior is dominated by blood-red lighting, eroded stone, huge stairways and the skeletal remains of an older funerary complex.
The lower section is exposed to the open blood-soaked landscape. The interior then narrows into a dark passage with ambushes and hostile ritualists. The upper section opens into a much larger ceremonial space, where the player reaches the lift to Mohg’s arena.
The final arena is deliberately different from the lower halls. It is a broad ritual chamber with a great pool of blood and the suspended cocoon of Miquella. The setting makes the boss fight feel less like an ordinary ruin clear and more like an interruption of Mohg’s attempted ascension.
The temple’s layout expresses two overlapping identities
- 01An ancient burial monument, associated with the long-dead dynasty that once occupied the underground region.
- 02Mohg’s ceremonial palace, where the Formless Mother’s blood, Miquella’s cocoon and the promised Mohgwyn Dynasty are brought together.
Routes to the mausoleum
Route 1: White Mask Varré’s Pureblood Knight’s Medal
This is the earliest normal route.
White Mask Varré begins in Limgrave, later moves to the Rose Church in Liurnia, and eventually gives the player the Pureblood Knight’s Medal after the player completes his initiation. The quest involves receiving the Lord of Blood’s Favor, dyeing it in the blood of a Finger Maiden and returning it to Varré. The medal teleports the player directly to the Mohgwyn Palace area near the mausoleum entrance.
The medal can be used before the recommended endgame. This is why Mohgwyn Palace can be reached much earlier than its enemy strength and boss rewards suggest.
Route summary
Route 2: Consecrated Snowfield Sending Gate
A second route begins in the Consecrated Snowfield, at a Sending Gate on the western edge of the region. The gate is near the western cliffs and takes the player through a linear cave route into the southern part of Mohgwyn Palace. The player must first defeat the hostile Sanguine Noble associated with the portal route before the way becomes usable.
This route normally becomes available later because reaching the Consecrated Snowfield requires the two halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion and access to the Grand Lift of Rold.
Practical difference
Route 1: White Mask Varré’s Pureblood Knight’s Medal
- 01Meet White Mask Varré at The First Step in Limgrave.
- 02Find him at the Rose Church in Liurnia.
- 03Accept his initiation.
- 04Complete the Lord of Blood’s Favor step.
- 05Return the soaked favour to Varré.
- 06Receive the Pureblood Knight’s Medal.
- 07Use it to teleport to Mohgwyn Palace.
- 08Travel through the blood-soaked approach to Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance.
Route 2: Consecrated Snowfield Sending Gate
| Route | Earliest practical timing | Arrival point |
|---|---|---|
| Pureblood Knight’s Medal | Early or mid-game, depending on quest progress | Near the mausoleum entrance |
| Consecrated Snowfield Sending Gate | Late game, after reaching the Snowfield | Palace Approach Ledge-Road |
Subareas and checkpoints
Palace Approach Ledge-Road
This is the regional approach, not an interior part of the mausoleum. It is nevertheless the route most players use when entering through the Snowfield portal.
The site of grace sits beneath ancient ruins and overlooks the blood swamp. The nearby hillside contains many sleeping Second-Generation Albinaurics, while the blood lake contains a giant crow that can be lured towards the cliff edge. These enemies are responsible for the area’s famous rune-farming reputation, although that activity belongs to Mohgwyn Palace rather than the mausoleum itself.
The path towards the temple runs through blood, hostile Albinaurics and enormous skeletal apparitions summoned by some of the stronger Albinaurics. Mounted travel is useful in the open swamp, but the temple interior requires ordinary on-foot exploration.

Some of these are descriptive map labels or guide terms rather than formal in-game location names. They are retained here to distinguish the connected approach from the temple.
Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance
This site of grace is at the northern entrance to the temple complex and is the usual arrival point when using Varré’s medal. It is also the first dependable reset point before the interior.
From here, the player can either explore the surrounding exterior for materials and side encounters or head towards the stairway and the mausoleum halls. The route is mostly direct, but the blood-soaked approach contains groups of enemies that can surround a player who rushes into the open area.

Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint
The Midpoint grace lies beyond the cavernous interior, after the player has passed through several blood-themed chambers and reached the far side of the temple. It is the main checkpoint for the final section of the dungeon and the Mohg approach.
The area around the grace includes the route to White Mask Varré’s invasion sign, an upper lift towards Mohg and a nearby ceremonial chamber containing additional loot. The Midpoint grace is therefore the best place to prepare for the boss, complete Varré’s final encounter and make repeated attempts at Mohg.

Cocoon of the Empyrean
The Cocoon of the Empyrean is in Mohg’s arena at the summit. Before Mohg is defeated, it is the centrepiece of the boss encounter and cannot function as a normal post-boss checkpoint. After victory, the site of grace appears at the far side of the arena beside the cocoon.
This is the location where the base game’s Mohgwyn storyline ends. In the expansion-enabled game, the withered arm beside Miquella’s cocoon becomes the route into the Land of Shadow once the relevant requirements are satisfied.

Residents, visitors and factions
Mohg, Lord of Blood
Mohg is the mausoleum’s ruler and principal boss. He is an Omen demigod who seeks to establish the Mohgwyn Dynasty, with Miquella as the object of his dynastic ambition. The mausoleum is therefore not simply a dungeon occupied by a powerful enemy. It is Mohg’s court, shrine and attempted capital.
His boss encounter takes place at the summit, beyond the Midpoint grace. He is fought in two phases and uses bloodflame, tridents, ritual attacks and the distinctive Nihil sequence. The fight rewards careful management of bleed, fire damage and healing opportunities.
The Purifying Crystal Tear, obtained elsewhere in the base game, can mitigate the special effect of Mohg’s three Nihil curses when mixed into the Flask of Wondrous Physick. Mohg’s Shackle, found in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds, can also be used against him in the first phase. These are optional preparations rather than requirements.
White Mask Varré
Varré’s final encounter takes place inside the mausoleum approach. His invasion sign appears in the hallway before the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint grace. After the invasion, Varré can be found nearby in a defeated state. Killing him awards the Rune Arc, Furlcalling Finger Remedy and Varré’s Bouquet, along with the six Festering Bloody Fingers associated with the encounter.
This encounter is the conclusion of Varré’s base-game questline. It is missable as a living NPC interaction if his quest has been advanced or disrupted in certain ways, but the invasion itself is tied to his presence in Mohgwyn Palace and is normally available before defeating him there.
Imprisoned Merchant
An Imprisoned Merchant can be found inside the mausoleum. He is a functional merchant rather than a decorative shopfront. The nearby Sanguine Nobles can interrupt the visit, so clear the immediate room or buy what you need quickly.
Named directory: characters and residents
Needle Knight Leda should be treated separately from the base game. She appears at the cocoon only under Shadow of the Erdtree progression conditions, including defeating Mohg and Starscourge Radahn with the expansion installed.
Factions
The Ancient Dynasty is the older civilisation whose remains include the mausoleum and other underground ruins. Mohg’s Mohgwyn Dynasty is a later project imposed upon that ancient setting. The distinction matters: the building’s age and architecture predate Mohg, while the blood rituals, Albinauric defenders and Miquella shrine belong to the present occupation.
Imprisoned Merchant
Enemies and security
The mausoleum’s ordinary enemies are mostly blood-afflicted servants, corpses and ritual nobles rather than conventional soldiers.
Second-Generation Albinaurics
These Albinaurics are concentrated more heavily in the wider Palace approach than in the temple itself. They have been tainted by Mohg’s blood and defend the area around his palace. Some use large clubs and can summon giant skeletal apparitions, while others attack with blood-infused movement and projectiles.
Sanguine Nobles
Sanguine Nobles are the most dangerous recurring humanoid enemies inside the mausoleum. They use fast blood attacks, curved weapons and sudden lunges. Their red colouring and ritual behaviour make them easy to mistake for ordinary corpses at a distance.
Do not treat the interior as empty space between checkpoints. Nobles can emerge while the player is examining loot or speaking to the merchant, and several encounters are positioned to punish a straight sprint.
Putrid Corpses and Blood Rotmounds
Putrid corpses appear in the approach and temple areas. Blood Rotmounds are large, grotesque enemies associated with the blood-soaked ground. Their attacks are dangerous in cramped spaces, especially when combined with a Sanguine Noble or Albinauric group.
Named directory: enemies
The giant crow and most Albinaurics belong to the wider Palace approach rather than the mausoleum building. The Nameless White Mask invaders are also encountered in the surrounding blood lake rather than the temple interior.

Walkthrough
1. Reach Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance
From Palace Approach Ledge-Road, follow the blood-filled route towards the monumental structure. If you used the Pureblood Knight’s Medal, begin at Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance and use the grace before exploring.
If travelling through the open swamp, mount Torrent where possible. Dismount before tight interior passages and whenever an invasion or scripted encounter is likely to occur.
2. Search the exterior approach
The approach contains crafting materials, upgrade materials and consumables. It is possible to ride past much of it, but doing so can leave enemies behind you when you reach a narrow staircase.
3. Explore the merchant section
The Imprisoned Merchant is located in the interior. Deal with nearby Sanguine Nobles before opening the merchant menu if you want a safe purchase.
The merchant area is one of the location’s easily overlooked side spaces. It is not a separate town or settlement, and the merchant’s presence does not mean the mausoleum has a general service hub. There is no smith, Spirit Tuner or Great Rune restoration facility here.
4. Reach Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint
Continue through the cavernous halls. Use corners to separate Sanguine Nobles from other enemies and avoid fighting several blood-afflicted opponents in a narrow passage at once.
Once you reach Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint, rest and use it as the main preparation point. From here:
5. Complete Varré’s final encounter
Find the red invasion sign in the hallway before the Midpoint grace and invade Varré’s world. He uses blood-themed attacks and can pressure the player at close range.
After defeating him, collect the rewards and check the area where his body remains. This closes his base-game storyline and provides Varré’s Bouquet.
6. Search the upper ceremonial chamber
Before taking the boss lift, inspect the surrounding upper area. The mausoleum contains several valuable fixed pickups, including high-level upgrade materials and runes. Some are placed beside statues, altars or corpses rather than directly on the critical route.
A particularly important pickup is the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone found in the ceremonial section near the Midpoint route. The area also contains Ghost Glovewort, Smithing Stones and other materials listed below.
7. Take the lift to Mohg
The lift beside the upper altar leads to Mohg’s arena. Prepare before stepping through the fog:
Defeat Mohg to receive his Great Rune and Remembrance.
8. Visit the cocoon after victory
After the fight, activate the Cocoon of the Empyrean grace at the far side of the arena. Examine the cocoon and the withered arm if you are entering Shadow of the Erdtree.
The cocoon itself does not become a normal shop, quest hub or repeatable dungeon. Its importance is narrative and progression-based.
2. Search the exterior approach: A cautious route is
- 01Activate Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance.
- 02Clear or bypass the first Albinauric groups.
- 03Search the outer edges of the blood-soaked approach.
- 04Enter the temple and deal with the first corpse and Noble ambushes.
- 05Continue through the interior rather than repeatedly returning to the open blood lake.
Boss: Mohg, Lord of Blood
Mohg is an optional Shardbearer-style demigod boss. The fight has two broad phases.
Phase one
Mohg uses his trident for sweeping and thrusting attacks, combines physical strikes with bloodflame and applies curse marks during the fight. Staying close can be safer than backing away too far, but the player must recognise the range of his trident and avoid standing in bloodflame pools.
Mohg’s Shackle can temporarily stagger or restrain him during the first phase. It is not required, and it does not replace ordinary damage or positioning.
Nihil
During the transition, Mohg performs the Nihil ritual. Without the Purifying Crystal Tear, each declaration causes severe damage and healing for Mohg. The tear does not prevent the ritual, but it greatly reduces its danger when used in the Flask of Wondrous Physick.
Phase two
Mohg gains much greater mobility and begins using airborne attacks, wider bloodflame coverage and more aggressive movement. The arena becomes progressively harder to navigate because fire and blood effects remain on the floor.
A practical strategy is to preserve stamina, avoid panic-rolling through lingering flames and keep enough distance to recognise the start of his aerial attacks without giving him unlimited space.
Items and collectibles
The following directory consolidates the fixed items associated with the mausoleum and its immediate approach. Some broader Palace items are listed separately because they are often incorrectly attributed to the mausoleum itself.
Fixed items within the mausoleum proper
The location’s broad item listing includes upgrade materials, runes, a Stonesword Key, Stanching Boluses and crafting materials. The Great Rune and Remembrance are boss rewards rather than ordinary pickups.
Nearby Palace items, not mausoleum proper
These are associated with the wider Mohgwyn Palace approach:
The distinction is useful when following a map. These items may be found before entering the temple, but they should not be counted as internal mausoleum collectibles.
Boss rewards
The Remembrance can be exchanged with Finger Reader Enia for either Mohgwyn’s Sacred Spear or Bloodboon. It may instead be consumed for 30,000 runes.
Boss rewards
| Reward | Source | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Mohg’s Great Rune | Mohg, Lord of Blood | Can be restored at the Divine Tower of East Altus and equipped for its Great Rune effect |
| Remembrance of the Blood Lord | Mohg, Lord of Blood | Consume for runes or trade to Finger Reader Enia |
| Mohgwyn’s Sacred Spear | Remembrance trade | Great Spear with Mohg’s bloodflame ritual |
| Bloodboon | Remembrance trade | Bloodflame incantation |
Services and facilities
The mausoleum has fewer facilities than a settlement or major hub.
Not present
Mohg’s Great Rune is not restored inside the mausoleum. It must be taken to the appropriate Divine Tower, while the Remembrance is exchanged with Enia elsewhere.
Lore and progression changes
The ancient dynasty
The mausoleum is a surviving monument of an older underground civilisation. The Ancient Dynasty’s ruins are spread through the Siofra-related depths, and its architecture predates Mohg’s occupation. The mausoleum’s current name therefore reflects a political appropriation: Mohg is building a new dynasty inside an ancient grave.
Mohg and Miquella
Mohg’s stated ambition is to establish a dynasty with Miquella as its divine centre. Miquella, however, remains in a comatose state inside the cocoon. The Remembrance describes Mohg’s desire to raise Miquella to godhood and become his consort, while also making clear that Miquella never responds to him.
This makes the mausoleum’s layout narratively important. The player moves from the outer blood swamp, through Mohg’s occupied temple, and finally into the chamber where the entire dynasty is waiting for an awakening that never occurs.
Post-boss state
Defeating Mohg changes the summit into a permanent checkpoint area. The Cocoon of the Empyrean grace becomes available, and the mausoleum no longer functions as an active boss approach in the same way.
In the base game, the cocoon is mainly a lore and expansion gateway location. With Shadow of the Erdtree installed, it becomes the starting point for entering the Land of Shadow after the player has defeated Mohg and Radahn.
