Note
Base game guide. This article covers Morne Tunnel itself, the mining dungeon in the Weeping Peninsula. It does not include Castle Morne, the Castle Morne Rampart merchant, or the separate tunnels and caves around the peninsula.
Overview
Morne Tunnel is a compact but unusually rewarding early-game mine in southern Limgrave’s Weeping Peninsula. It lies in a ravine east of the peninsula’s Minor Erdtree and is occupied by miners and Misbegotten. Its main purpose is practical: the tunnel provides a substantial early supply of Smithing Stone [1], several Somber Smithing Stone [1], crafting materials and a weapon reward from its boss.
The dungeon is also a useful introduction to Elden Ring’s mine design. Its miners are resistant to many slashing attacks but vulnerable to strike damage, its main chamber uses vertical routes and wooden platforms, and its final area changes from an industrial excavation into a Misbegotten-held cavern. The boss, Scaly Misbegotten, is an enlarged axe-wielding member of the same broad enemy family found throughout the tunnel.
Morne Tunnel is optional. It is not required to enter Castle Morne, defeat Leonine Misbegotten or progress the Weeping Peninsula’s main storyline.
Boundaries and neighbouring locations
Morne Tunnel is a self-contained dungeon entered through a mine opening in the Weeping Peninsula. Its internal Site of Grace, enemy population, boss arena and loot all belong to the tunnel instance.
It should be kept separate from the following nearby or similarly named places:
The regional classification can look inconsistent in guides because the Weeping Peninsula is commonly described as a subregion of Limgrave, while some walkthroughs label the dungeon simply as a Limgrave location. For practical purposes, the most precise hierarchy is Limgrave, Weeping Peninsula, Morne Tunnel.
Boundaries and neighbouring locations
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Castle Morne | the large fortress at the southern end of the peninsula. |
| Castle Morne Rampart | a Site of Grace and road area near the castle, with a separate Nomadic Merchant. |
| Morne Moangrave | the area around Castle Morne’s Leonine Misbegotten boss arena. |
| Weeping Peninsula Minor Erdtree | the field landmark west of the tunnel. |
| Other mining dungeons | including Limgrave Tunnels and Gael Tunnel, which are separate locations with different layouts, enemies and rewards. |
Geography and approach
The entrance is in a rocky ravine in the central-eastern part of the Weeping Peninsula. The tunnel is not attached to Castle Morne and does not provide a route into the castle. Its outside entrance is a mine opening rather than a major road or settlement.
The simplest approach is to travel through the peninsula’s central roads and ravines, keeping the Minor Erdtree as a useful landmark. The entrance is east of that tree. Once inside, the dungeon immediately provides a Site of Grace, so dying while exploring does not require a long return journey.
There is no map fragment, lift network or alternate world exit associated with Morne Tunnel. The dungeon is a straightforward entrance-to-boss route with optional side platforms and alcoves.

The listed points are dungeon access and checkpoint features, not separate named settlements or buildings.

Internal layout and subareas
Morne Tunnel is best understood as four connected sections rather than a collection of formally named districts.
Entrance and lift
The opening section contains the Site of Grace and a lift descending into the working mine. Use the lift switch, then consider sending the platform back down before leaving it. This creates access to a lower side area where several Smithing Stone [1] pickups can be collected.
The tunnel’s opening enemies are miners. They are often positioned around corners, on ledges or near wooden structures, making the first section more dangerous than its narrow corridors suggest.
Main mining chamber
The central chamber is the largest open area in the dungeon. It contains wooden walkways, ladders, platforms, wheelbarrows, shacks and multiple miners. A Misbegotten presence becomes more prominent as the route progresses.
This room rewards slow exploration. Look above and below the main floor, check the edges of the wooden platforms and do not assume that the obvious staircase is the only route. Several of the tunnel’s upgrade materials are placed along these vertical paths.
Southern branch and shack area
A southern route descends past wooden stairs and reaches a shack or work area. This branch contains additional Smithing Stone [1] and a Somber Smithing Stone [1] behind the shack. The branch eventually reconnects with the lower part of the mine.
The area is easy to rush through, but doing so risks missing stones placed beside walls and beneath the wooden steps.
Misbegotten approach and boss cavern
The final route contains more aggressive Misbegotten, including Winged Misbegotten in the wider approach. The boss entrance lies beyond this section. A Somber Smithing Stone [1] is positioned beside the entrance to the boss room, allowing it to be collected before committing to the fight.
The boss room itself is a relatively open cavern. It contains no secondary boss and does not connect to Castle Morne.
Subarea directory
The game does not provide formal names for these internal sections. For navigation, the following descriptive labels are useful:
These are guide labels rather than additional in-game location names.

Residents, factions and security
Morne Tunnel has no friendly resident, merchant, quest giver or named character. It is occupied by hostile miners and Misbegotten.
The miners appear to be the original workforce or inhabitants of the excavation. The Misbegotten have overrun the deeper sections, turning the working mine into a hostile settlement. The available location references identify the dungeon’s ordinary enemies as Miner, Misbegotten and Winged Misbegotten.
There is no formal faction system inside the tunnel. The practical division is between:
Enemy directory
The miner enemy can drop Smithing Stone [1] as an ordinary enemy drop, although this is separate from the tunnel’s fixed pickups. A miner may also drop a Pickaxe, but this is a random drop rather than guaranteed dungeon loot.
---
Residents, factions and security
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Miners | usually stationed around mining equipment and wooden work areas. |
| Misbegotten | stronger melee opponents occupying the deeper route. |
| Winged Misbegotten | aerial enemies that can attack from awkward angles and disrupt movement. |
Enemies and combat advice
Miners
Miners are the tunnel’s defining ordinary enemy. Their mining tools and heavy protective gear make them less vulnerable to many slash attacks. Strike weapons, guard counters, charged heavy attacks and jump attacks are reliable answers.
Approach miners carefully rather than attacking into a group. Some carry tools or projectiles, and others can be positioned above or below the player. Pulling one enemy at a time is safer than fighting on a narrow platform.
The miners’ Smithing Stone drop is not a guaranteed farming source. The fixed stones are the dependable reward for exploration.
Misbegotten
Misbegotten are faster and more aggressive than miners. Their attacks cover more space and they can punish healing in confined passages. Keep enough distance to avoid being cornered, but do not retreat blindly towards another enemy.
A shield can be useful against ordinary Misbegotten, while weapons with good reach make it easier to punish their recovery animations. If several are present, use the mine’s corners and doorways to control the engagement.
Winged Misbegotten
Winged Misbegotten can attack from above and make vertical spaces hazardous. Do not remain under them while also fighting a ground enemy. Either draw the flying enemy into a clear area or retreat to a position where its approach is visible.
Ranged attacks, throwing weapons and jump attacks are useful when the enemy is airborne or difficult to reach.
---
Miners: Useful tactics include
- 01Lock on before stepping onto a wooden walkway.
- 02Use a shield to absorb a pickaxe hit, then guard counter.
- 03Use a mace, club, hammer or other strike weapon if available.
- 04Break line of sight around mine supports to avoid several miners attacking together.
- 05Search the walls after each fight, since the same orange crystal appearance is used for fixed Smithing Stone pickups.
Boss: Scaly Misbegotten
Scaly Misbegotten is the dungeon’s final boss. It is a larger, tougher Misbegotten wielding a heavy axe. The boss’s attacks have broad arcs and can catch players who remain directly in front of it for too long.
Practical strategy
The boss does not introduce a separate phase or a special environmental puzzle. Its main difficulty is the reach and timing of its axe attacks in a relatively confined cavern.
Boss reward
The Rusted Anchor is a great hammer-class weapon. It is the dungeon’s unique completion reward and is not obtained from a chest or ordinary enemy drop.

Items and collectibles
Morne Tunnel is chiefly valuable for weapon-upgrade materials. The dungeon contains fixed Smithing Stone [1] pickups throughout the mine and three fixed Somber Smithing Stone [1] pickups. The exact number of ordinary Smithing Stone [1] nodes can be presented differently by guides because some references count individual stones while others count pickup locations, but the route includes multiple nodes across the lift, central chamber, southern branch and lower floor.
Upgrade materials
The three Somber Smithing Stone [1] placements are:

The tunnel also contains ordinary enemy drops. These should not be confused with fixed collectibles.
Random or enemy-dependent rewards
Enemy drops can vary and should not be treated as guaranteed completion rewards.

Full walkthrough
1. Activate the Site of Grace
Enter the cave and activate Morne Tunnel. This is the only Site of Grace inside the dungeon.
Before taking the lift, check your equipment. A strike weapon is helpful, and a shield can make the miners much easier to handle.
2. Use the lift and inspect the lower route
Ride the lift down. You can step off at the destination and begin clearing the mine, or send the platform back down without you. Doing so exposes a lower side route and several Smithing Stone [1] pickups.
Do not leave the first lift area without checking the walls and alcoves. Mine crystals are easy to mistake for scenery.
3. Clear the first miners
Move through the working areas slowly. Miners can be attacked from the side, from above or while another miner is approaching from a tunnel. Use the wooden supports as visual cover and avoid standing at the edge of a platform while fighting.
Collect the fixed Smithing Stone [1] nodes as you go.
4. Cross the main chamber
In the large central room, follow the wooden crossbeam and climb towards the upper platform. This route contains another Smithing Stone [1]. The chamber also has miners placed around the walkways and near the equipment.
After collecting the upper item, return to the main floor and search along the walls. Several stone nodes are placed away from the direct route.
5. Take the southern branch
Follow the southern exit down the wooden stairs. Check both sides of the stair route, including the area underneath the steps. A Smithing Stone [1] is placed along this lower path.
Continue to the shack at the end of the route. Search behind it for a Somber Smithing Stone [1].
6. Explore the lower floor
Return towards the main chamber and inspect the ground-level walls and side alcoves. This is where rushing most often causes missed Smithing Stone [1] pickups.
Collect the fixed consumables and materials as you find them, but be prepared for Misbegotten attacks as the dungeon transitions from miner territory to the deeper hostile section.
7. Enter the Misbegotten area
Proceed through the deeper route and deal with the Misbegotten and Winged Misbegotten. Keep the flying enemy from attacking while you are locked into a ground fight.
Before entering the boss fog, check the alcove beside the entrance for the third Somber Smithing Stone [1].
8. Defeat Scaly Misbegotten
Enter the boss cavern and fight Scaly Misbegotten. Use side-rolls, guard counters and stance-breaking attacks. If the boss is pressuring you, summon a Spirit Ash to create an opening for healing or charged attacks.
9. Collect the Rusted Anchor
After the boss dies, collect the Rusted Anchor. You can then leave through the boss-room exit and return to the entrance or travel directly from the map.

Hazards and secrets
Morne Tunnel has no illusionary wall puzzle, teleport trap, NPC invasion or quest-only chamber documented in the available references. Its secrets are primarily route-based:
The greatest practical hazard is falling from a wooden platform while fighting. In the main chamber, avoid rolling backwards without checking the drop behind you.
---
Lore and progression
Morne Tunnel has no named NPC dialogue or explicit quest sequence of its own. Its environmental story is conveyed through the contrast between mining equipment and the Misbegotten occupation of the deeper workings.
The tunnel shares the “Morne” name with Castle Morne, but the game does not establish that it is an internal section of the castle. It is a separate mine in the same broad region. The Misbegotten theme provides a regional connection, but the tunnel has no direct Edgar, Irina or Leonine Misbegotten encounter.
There are no known progression-state changes that transform Morne Tunnel’s layout or boss. It remains an optional dungeon from the beginning of the game onward. Clearing Castle Morne does not replace Scaly Misbegotten, and clearing Morne Tunnel does not alter Castle Morne’s NPC questline.
