Note

Base game guide. This article covers the Ainsel River Well entrance in eastern Liurnia, the underground route reached from it, the southern Uhl Palace Ruins passage, and the branch leading to the Dragonkin Soldier of Nokstella. It does not treat the whole Ainsel River as one location. Ainsel River Main, Nokstella, Eternal City, the Lake of Rot and the route reached through Renna’s Rise are separate connected areas, although some guides group them together under “Ainsel River”.

Overview

Ainsel River Well is an optional entrance from eastern Liurnia of the Lakes into the southern reaches of the underground Ainsel River. The surface structure is a domed stone well building, guarded by a Golem, with a lift descending to the Ainsel River Well Depths Site of Grace. From there, the route passes through ant-infested tunnels, the Uhl Palace Ruins, and a sluice-gate chamber before reaching the Dragonkin Soldier of Nokstella.

The area is valuable for three reasons. It provides the first practical introduction to Ainsel River, contains the Ainsel River map fragment, offers access to a merchant, and leads to an optional boss whose reward is the Frozen Lightning Spear incantation. It is also easy to confuse with the later Ainsel River route involved in Ranni’s quest. Entering through this well does not initially provide access to the northern Ainsel River, Nokstella or the Lake of Rot.

Surface entrance

Ainsel River Well stands in eastern Liurnia, in a domed stone building north-east of the Eastern Tableland Site of Grace. The entrance is visible on the surface, although the Golem outside can make the building appear more dangerous than it is. The lift inside descends a considerable distance into the underground river system.

The surface building is best regarded as the entrance location, rather than part of the underground river proper. It contains no shop, quest NPC or boss arena.

The Golem is a regular overworld enemy rather than a named boss. It can be bypassed, fought from range or attacked around its legs.

Underground boundary

The lift terminates at the Ainsel River Well Depths Site of Grace. From this point, the accessible southern branch runs through the underground river and Uhl Palace Ruins. The route eventually reaches the area commonly identified as the Dragonkin Soldier of Nokstella’s arena and its associated Site of Grace.

This southern route should not be expanded to include every location shown on the Ainsel River map. In particular:

Ainsel River as a whole is one of the two great underground rivers beneath the Lands Between, but the well provides only a restricted southern entry until the player reaches the later quest-related access routes.

---

Ainsel River Well

The surface well is a compact stone building containing the descending lift. It is the only direct surface entrance to the southern Ainsel route. The well is accessible without beginning Ranni’s quest.

Ainsel River Well Depths

This is the first underground area after the lift. It contains the first Site of Grace and opens onto a broad cavern with a riverbed, ant tunnels and the lower approaches to Uhl Palace Ruins.

The first important choice is whether to follow the obvious underground route immediately or explore around the cavern edges. The area is not a traditional dungeon with locked doors and looping shortcuts. Its challenge comes from enemy placement, vertical terrain and the number of routes that appear to lead somewhere useful.

Uhl Palace Ruins

Uhl Palace Ruins are the most visually distinctive part of the southern route. The ruins consist of a large ancient structure, monumental stonework and a huge overhead figure associated with the gravity attacks in the area. Claymen and ants occupy the surrounding passages.

The ruins contain the Ainsel River map fragment and provide the route onwards towards the sluice-gate section. The large enemy suspended above the ruins is a Malformed Star. It can attack the player with gravity projectiles while the player is crossing the exposed cavern. The terrain and ruined pillars provide useful cover.

Ainsel River Sluice Gate

The sluice-gate area is a named Site of Grace and a useful navigation landmark. It marks the transition from the Uhl Palace approach into the deeper river route. An elevator beyond this section leads down towards the lower passage associated with the Dragonkin Soldier.

The machinery and stone construction suggest that the ruins were not merely decorative. The location appears to be part of an ancient subterranean infrastructure built around the river and its channels, although the game does not present the sluice system as an interactable puzzle.

Dragonkin Soldier route

Beyond the sluice-gate section, the river narrows into ant-infested tunnels. A side route leads towards the Ainsel River Downstream Site of Grace and the Dragonkin Soldier’s chamber.

The Dragonkin Soldier is located in a large chamber reached by leaving the main river passage and following a smaller tunnel. The route is easy to miss because the cave branches are visually similar and the ants can obscure the doorway.

Reaching the well

The well is available independently of Ranni’s quest. This makes it one of the earliest ways to discover the underground Ainsel River, although discovering the area does not automatically unlock the whole underground region.

Reaching the well: steps

  1. 01
Travel to the Eastern Tableland Site of Grace in eastern Liurnia.
  2. 02
Follow the road and terrain north-east towards the domed well building.
  3. 03
Deal with or bypass the Golem outside.
  4. 04
Enter the building and take the lift down.
  5. 05
Activate the Ainsel River Well Depths Site of Grace.

Suggested first exploration route

The map fragment is found on a corpse near the Hermit Merchant in the Uhl Palace ruins area. Several guides describe the corpse as being underneath or near the large gravity enemy’s position.

The most efficient first visit is

  1. 01
    Activate Ainsel River Well Depths.
  2. 02
Explore the first cavern and collect visible materials.
  3. 03
Enter the Uhl Palace Ruins approach.
  4. 04
Move under cover from the Malformed Star’s gravity attacks.
  5. 05
Collect the Ainsel River map fragment near the merchant.
  6. 06
Continue through the ruins and ant passages.
  7. 07
    Activate Ainsel River Sluice Gate.
  8. 08
    Descend through the elevator route.
  9. 09
Activate Ainsel River Downstream if reached.
  10. 10
Follow the river and side tunnel to the Dragonkin Soldier.
  11. 11
Return later for any high ledges or exposed side platforms that were unsafe during the first pass.

Route to the map fragment

From Ainsel River Well Depths, move towards the large Uhl Palace chamber. The Malformed Star attacks from above and can reach much of the open area. Do not remain in the centre of the cavern longer than necessary.

Use the ruins and pillars as cover, then move towards the structure beneath the Malformed Star. The corpse holding the map fragment is near the Hermit Merchant in the sheltered section. Collecting it reveals the wider Ainsel River map, including areas that are not yet reachable from the well.

Route to the Dragonkin Soldier

Some guides describe the route as beginning by taking the left-hand passage from the well-depths area, then following the river through ant tunnels. Others describe the approach from the downstream Grace. These are the same connected route viewed from different checkpoints.

---

Route to the Dragonkin Soldier: steps

  1. 01
From the well-depths Grace, follow the river and tunnels towards Uhl Palace Ruins.
  2. 02
Continue through the ruins and past the ant-infested passages.
  3. 03
Reach the Ainsel River Sluice Gate Site of Grace.
  4. 04
Use the elevator beyond the sluice-gate section.
  5. 05
Follow the riverbed and watch for the route leading into a smaller side tunnel.
  6. 06
Pass the ants and enter the large chamber.
  7. 07
The Dragonkin Soldier is at the far end of the arena.

Hermit Merchant

The Hermit Merchant sits in the Uhl Palace Ruins area near the corpse holding the Ainsel River map fragment. He is a functional merchant, not merely a decorative character.

His presence is useful because the underground route can be reached before the player has established a convenient supply of consumables for dealing with cave enemies. His stock should be checked directly in-game because merchant inventories and purchasable quantities are best verified from the current playthrough rather than inferred from the location’s name.

Named directory: characters

The Dragonkin Soldier and Malformed Star are hostile named entities, not residents or quest NPCs.

Ancient inhabitants

Uhl Palace Ruins are associated with the ancient dynasty beneath the Lands Between. The area’s Claymen are described in item and environmental lore as servants or priests of an ancient dynasty. The ruins’ monumental architecture, statues and subterranean setting support the impression of a civilisation that predates the Erdtree.

The Nox and Nokstella are part of the wider Ainsel River setting, but they should not be listed as inhabitants of the well entrance itself. Their principal domain is the separate Nokstella, Eternal City area.

---

Golem

A Golem guards the surface entrance. It is not a named boss and does not block access permanently. Players who do not want to fight it can run into the well building and use the lift.

Ants

Ants are the main ordinary enemy throughout the underground approach. They appear in river tunnels and enclosed passages, with some positioned on walls or ceilings. Their attacks are particularly dangerous when the player is focused on another enemy or trying to collect an item.

Claymen

Claymen inhabit the Uhl Palace Ruins and nearby underground passages. They are generally less threatening than the ants but can interrupt attacks and create pressure when combined with the Malformed Star’s ranged gravity projectiles.

Malformed Star

The Malformed Star is a large gravity-aligned enemy positioned above the Uhl Palace ruins. It attacks from a difficult-to-reach perch and can bombard the player with gravity effects while the player crosses the cavern.

The safest first approach is not necessarily to kill it. Move between pillars and ruined structures, collect the map fragment and reach the merchant. If you choose to fight, avoid standing in open ground and be prepared for attacks that punish slow item collection and healing.

It is a significant enemy in this route, but it is not the final boss of the well branch.

Dragonkin Soldier of Nokstella

The Dragonkin Soldier is the principal optional boss reached through Ainsel River Well. It occupies a large chamber beyond the ant tunnels and is encountered as a named boss rather than as an ordinary roaming Dragonkin.

The fight is fought in a relatively open arena, but the boss’s size and sweeping attacks can make the player feel cornered. Staying close to the safer side of its body can be more reliable than repeatedly retreating across the whole arena. Ranged characters should use the arena’s space while avoiding becoming trapped against the walls.

Defeating it awards the Frozen Lightning Spear incantation. This is distinct from the Dragonkin Soldier encountered in Siofra River, which has a different encounter and reward. Confusing the two bosses is a common source of incorrect reward information.

Named directory: enemies and boss

The enemy names above are consolidated from the well entrance, Well Depths, Uhl Palace and the Dragonkin route. Enemy placement may vary by exact corridor and elevation, but the area itself is fixed rather than procedurally generated.

Ainsel River map fragment

The map fragment is the most important non-boss collectible in the area. It is held by a corpse near the Hermit Merchant in the Uhl Palace Ruins section.

Acquisition

The fragment reveals Ainsel River and its surrounding underground geography, but it does not itself unlock inaccessible entrances or quest routes.

Acquisition

  1. 01
Reach the Uhl Palace ruins cavern.
  2. 02
Use pillars and stone structures to avoid or minimise the Malformed Star’s attacks.
  3. 03
Enter the sheltered structure beneath the enemy.
  4. 04
    Find the Hermit Merchant.
  5. 05
Loot the nearby corpse to obtain the Map: Ainsel River.

Frozen Lightning Spear

This incantation is the Dragonkin Soldier of Nokstella’s reward. It is obtained by defeating the boss in the Ainsel route, not by defeating the similarly named Dragonkin Soldier in Siofra River.

Other loot

The area contains ordinary corpses, materials and minor pickups in the ruins, river passages and side platforms. The exact inventory is best treated by subarea and elevation rather than as one undifferentiated list, because several visible items are placed on ledges that are approached from different routes.

The most important fixed named rewards verified for this scope are:

A complete item-by-item sweep of every minor consumable and crafting material would require a dedicated interactive-map or in-game coordinate audit. The sources consulted here verify the principal named rewards but do not provide a sufficiently reliable, consolidated placement list for every minor pickup. This is therefore an evidence limitation, not a claim that no other items exist.

Sites of Grace

The last checkpoint is associated with the boss route and becomes especially useful after the boss is defeated. The Grace naming can cause confusion because “Ainsel River” appears in several checkpoint names across separate branches.

The relevant checkpoints are

Lift

The main entrance lift connects the surface Ainsel River Well to the Ainsel River Well Depths. Later elevators in the underground route are part of the internal progression and should not be confused with the entrance lift.

Merchant service

The Hermit Merchant provides the only clearly identified shop service within this scope. No inn, smithing facility, property purchase, stable or other settlement service is present.

Eastern Liurnia

The well is connected to the eastern Liurnia overworld through the surface entrance near Eastern Tableland. This makes it a self-contained optional descent rather than a late-game teleport destination.

Ainsel River Main

Ainsel River Main is not reached by simply continuing through the southern well branch. It is reached through the route associated with Renna’s Rise, after the relevant progression in Ranni’s quest. The two areas belong to the same broad underground river system, but their access states are different.

Nokstella and the Lake of Rot

The northern route connects to Nokstella, Eternal City, the Nokstella Waterfall Basin and eventually the Lake of Rot. These areas contain their own enemies, landmarks, items and progression events. They should not be counted as part of Ainsel River Well merely because the underground map connects them.

The southern well entrance is therefore useful for exploration and the Dragonkin boss, but it does not substitute for the Ranni quest route when the objective is to reach the northern Ainsel areas.

Ranni’s quest

Ainsel River Well is not mandatory for beginning or completing Ranni’s quest. Conversely, the later Ranni route through Ainsel River Main is required for the quest’s underground progression.

Gravity-fire exposure

The Malformed Star’s attacks make the open Uhl Palace chamber more dangerous than it first appears. The safest route is based on cover and short movements rather than sprinting in a straight line across the cavern.

Vertical loot

The ruined architecture contains ledges and elevated platforms. Some apparent dead ends are viewing points over lower sections, while other ledges can only be approached from a different branch of the river. If you are collecting everything, revisit the ruins after the main route is clear.

Enemy overlap

The area deliberately combines enemies with different attack profiles:

The practical lesson is to avoid pulling every nearby enemy at once. The route is considerably easier when each group is separated.

Naming confusion

---

Ainsel River is described as one of the great rivers flowing beneath the Lands Between and as the grave of civilisations that flourished before the Erdtree. Uhl Palace Ruins embody that older world through their enormous statues, mausoleum-like architecture and Claymen inhabitants.

The area also establishes a visual relationship between ancient subterranean civilisation and gravity-based lifeforms. The Malformed Star above the ruins is not simply a conventional monster encounter. Its position over the palace, combined with the gravity attacks and ruined architecture, reinforces the sense that the underground world has its own history and cosmic ecology.

The well itself is a particularly effective transition. The player descends from an ordinary Liurnian structure into a buried river system, then into architecture that is much older than the surface kingdoms. The later routes through Nokstella and the Lake of Rot expand that idea, but they are separate areas and should not be folded into the well’s own directory.

---

Is Ainsel River Well the same as Ainsel River Main?

No. Ainsel River Well is the eastern Liurnia entrance to the southern branch. Ainsel River Main is a separate northern area reached through the Ranni-related route, commonly via Renna’s Rise.

Do I need to start Ranni’s quest to enter the well?

No. The well and its southern underground route can be explored independently.

Can I reach Nokstella from the well?

Not by simply following the initial southern route. The well route leads to Uhl Palace Ruins and the Dragonkin Soldier. The principal route to Nokstella, Eternal City is tied to the northern Ainsel progression in Ranni’s quest.

What does the Dragonkin Soldier of Nokstella drop?

It rewards Frozen Lightning Spear. Do not confuse this boss with the separate Dragonkin Soldier in Siofra River.

Where is the Ainsel River map?

It is on a corpse near the Hermit Merchant in the Uhl Palace Ruins section, beneath the general area threatened by the Malformed Star.

Is the Malformed Star mandatory?

No. It is a major hostile encounter in the ruins, but the player can use cover and move through the area without treating it as the final boss of the route.

Is the area missable?

The southern Ainsel River Well route is not normally permanently missable in a standard base-game playthrough. However, quest progression changes access to the separate northern Ainsel areas, and the two Dragonkin Soldier encounters have different rewards. The main practical risk is missing the map fragment, merchant, elevated pickups or confusing this branch with Ainsel River Main.

---

This guide is scoped to the Ainsel River Well entrance and its southern route, not the complete Ainsel River region. The boundary is supported by sources that distinguish the well route from Ainsel River Main, Nokstella and the Lake of Rot.

The principal named locations, merchant, map fragment, major enemies, Sites of Grace and Dragonkin reward were cross-checked against multiple walkthrough and map sources. The remaining evidence gap concerns a fully exhaustive item-by-item list of every minor consumable, crafting material and elevated corpse in the Well Depths and Uhl Palace ruins. Those sources identify the principal collectibles but do not provide a single sufficiently reliable consolidated inventory. Accordingly, this article should be treated as a researched guide with an unresolved minor-loot directory gap, rather than a claim of absolute item completeness.
