Key takeaways

  • Apostate Derelict is a ruined church and Site of Grace at the far northern edge of the Consecrated Snowfield.
  • Its principal purpose is the conclusion of Latenna the Albinauric’s questline.
  • With the quest active, approach the enormous Albinauric woman inside the church and use the prompt to summon Latenna.
  • Completing the interaction rewards a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, allowing one special armament to reach +10.
  • The church contains the Silver Mirrorshield and a Somber Smithing Stone [9] according to location directories, while the surrounding snowfield contains separate enemies and encounters.
  • The Death Rite Bird found south-east of the church is a separate night-time field boss. It drops Explosive Ghostflame and is not part of the church’s interior encounter.

About this guide

Base game scope: This guide covers the original Elden Ring and its Consecrated Snowfield content. The nearby Wandering Mausoleum and the night-time Death Rite Bird are discussed as neighbouring encounters, but they are not treated as internal parts of the church.

Overview

Apostate Derelict is a small but important landmark in the Consecrated Snowfield, serving as the final destination of Latenna the Albinauric’s questline. The church itself contains little conventional loot, but it is one of the game’s most significant optional stops because completing Latenna’s journey here awards a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.

Overview and boundaries

Apostate Derelict is the remains of a church standing alone in the northern Consecrated Snowfield. It is not a dungeon with a multi-room layout, nor does it have a separate underground section, boss arena or merchant quarter. The meaningful interior consists of the ruined chapel, its Site of Grace, the large Albinauric associated with Latenna, and nearby loot.

The surrounding area is easy to confuse with the church itself because several encounters cluster around the same northern landmark. A Wandering Mausoleum stands just south of the church and is guarded by Mausoleum troops. A Death Rite Bird appears at night further south-east, near the end of the frozen river. These are nearby Consecrated Snowfield encounters rather than subareas of Apostate Derelict.

The location is associated with the Albinaurics. Inside the church is Phillia, Towering Little Sister, a gigantic first-generation Albinauric and a relative of Latenna. Phillia is normally inert and does not function as a conventional quest giver or merchant. Her importance is revealed through Latenna’s final dialogue.

Named directory: Apostate Derelict proper

The precise placement of every crafting-material pickup varies between location directories, and some databases combine the church with its immediate exterior. The named equipment and quest reward are the important fixed acquisitions.

Access and routes

Reaching the Consecrated Snowfield

Apostate Derelict cannot be reached during the ordinary first visit to the Mountaintops of the Giants. You must obtain both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion and use the correct option at the Grand Lift of Rold.

The two halves are found through separate progression routes:

The Consecrated Snowfield is a sub-region of the Mountaintops of the Giants, not a separate major region. Its western and northern reaches are obscured by heavy snowfall, and the frozen river provides a useful east-west navigation line.

Route from the Snowfield

The church is at the northern end of the frozen-river route. A general Consecrated Snowfield guide also places the Wandering Mausoleum directly in front of the church when approaching from the snowfield.

Suggested first-visit route

For a safe and efficient first visit, avoid stopping at every nearby encounter until the church grace is active. The Snowfield’s poor visibility makes it easy to become disorientated, and the Mausoleum’s projectiles can be more dangerous than the church itself.

Reaching the Consecrated Snowfield

  1. 01
Obtain the right half from Old Albus in the Village of the Albinaurics in Liurnia.
  2. 02
Obtain the left half from Castle Sol after progressing through the Mountaintops of the Giants and defeating Commander Niall.
  3. 03
Return to the Grand Lift of Rold.
  4. 04
Select Hoist secret medallion rather than the ordinary medallion option.
  5. 05
Follow the hidden route through the Hidden Path to the Haligtree and emerge into the Consecrated Snowfield.

Route from the Snowfield: Once in the open snowfield

  1. 01
Activate the Consecrated Snowfield Site of Grace if it is your first visit.
  2. 02
Travel north-west across the snowy plain.
  3. 03
Use the frozen river as a broad route marker where visibility allows.
  4. 04
Continue towards the north-western edge of the sub-region.
  5. 05
Look for the Wandering Mausoleum and the ruined church beyond it.
  6. 06
Activate the Apostate Derelict Site of Grace inside the church.

Suggested first-visit route: A practical order is

  1. 01
    Ride directly to Apostate Derelict.
  2. 02
    Activate the Site of Grace.
  3. 03
Complete or inspect Latenna’s quest interaction.
  4. 04
Return south to deal with the Wandering Mausoleum.
  5. 05
Rest at the grace and change the time to night.
  6. 06
Hunt the Death Rite Bird near the frozen river.
  7. 07
Explore other Snowfield landmarks such as Ordina, Liturgical Town, Yelough Anix Ruins and the Minor Erdtree separately.

Latenna’s questline

Requirements

To complete Latenna’s quest at Apostate Derelict, you need to have begun her questline and acquired the relevant Haligtree Secret Medallion progress.

Latenna is first encountered at the Slumbering Wolf’s Shack, outside the Lakeside Crystal Cave in Liurnia. Her story is tied to the medallion that Old Albus entrusted to the player. If the player reaches certain progression states without beginning the conversation, Latenna may already be dead at the shack, leaving her Spirit Ashes behind rather than a normal travelling NPC.

Completing the final interaction

At Apostate Derelict, approach Phillia inside the church. If the quest state is correct, an interaction prompt appears allowing you to summon Latenna.

Latenna recognises Phillia as a towering sister of the Albinaurics. Her dialogue identifies the journey as a return to the place where her people hope to create new life. The scene is therefore more than a simple item handover: it completes Latenna’s personal journey and connects her to the broader Albinauric struggle.

Reward

The reward is a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone. This is the final special-armament upgrade material, used to improve a somber weapon from +9 to +10. It is a limited resource in a playthrough, so this is one of the more valuable optional quest rewards in the base game.

Missability and progression warnings

The most important warning is to begin Latenna’s quest before treating the Apostate Derelict as an ordinary loot stop. If Latenna has died without the appropriate quest progression, the expected summon interaction may not appear. Her Spirit Ashes can still be obtained in some progression states, but that does not necessarily reproduce the final Apostate Derelict reward sequence.

The available quest documentation confirms that the church is the final location and that approaching the giant Albinauric allows Latenna to be summoned. It does not establish every possible edge case involving all sequence breaks, so unusual skips or altered quest states should be treated cautiously.

Requirements: Her quest is connected to

Completing the final interaction: The sequence is

  1. 01
Enter the church and approach Phillia.
  2. 02
    Use the summon prompt.
  3. 03
    Allow Latenna’s dialogue to play.
  4. 04
Speak to her again if necessary.
  5. 05
    Receive the quest reward.

Loot and collectibles

Silver Mirrorshield

The Silver Mirrorshield is the church’s principal equipment pickup. It is found near Phillia. The shield is especially thematically appropriate for the location because it is associated with protection from sorcery and is located beside a gigantic Albinauric connected to the Haligtree’s hidden path.

Location directories identify it as a chest or fixed pickup within the Apostate Derelict area.

Somber Smithing Stone [9]

A Somber Smithing Stone [9] is listed among the location’s notable loot. Somber stones upgrade special armaments, including many unique weapons, catalysts and shields. The [9] tier is the penultimate normal somber tier, immediately before the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone used for +10.

Because some map and location databases use slightly different boundaries for the church and its immediate exterior, check both the chapel and the ground immediately around it rather than assuming that every listed item is in the same room.

Crafting materials

The surrounding snowfield can provide cold-weather crafting materials. Directories list the following materials in the Apostate Derelict area:

These are ordinary overworld gathering materials rather than unique Apostate Derelict rewards. They can respawn after resting or reloading in the normal way, so they should not be confused with the fixed quest and equipment loot.

Enemies and nearby encounters

Inside Apostate Derelict

The church itself is not a conventional combat dungeon. The main named presence is Phillia, who is not a standard hostile enemy. Spirit Jellyfish are associated with the location and may appear around the church.

Some third-party databases report a much larger enemy list by combining the church with the adjacent Wandering Mausoleum and its guard patrols. That broader list should not be read as evidence that Mausoleum soldiers occupy the church interior.

Wandering Mausoleum

A Wandering Mausoleum stands just south of Apostate Derelict. It is guarded by Mausoleum Foot Soldiers, Mausoleum Soldiers and Mausoleum Knights. Unlike the church, the Mausoleum is a separate overworld landmark with its own purpose: removing the skull-like growths from its legs allows the player to enter and duplicate certain Remembrances.

This Snowfield Mausoleum is more dangerous than many earlier examples because it can launch magical projectiles as the player approaches. It is therefore sensible to activate the church grace before attempting to cleanse it.

Death Rite Bird

The Consecrated Snowfield Death Rite Bird is found at night south-east of the Apostate Derelict Site of Grace, near the end of the frozen river. This is a separate field boss encounter, not a boss inside the church.

The Death Rite Bird is vulnerable to the usual advantages against death-related enemies, including Holy damage and effects that perform well against undead foes. However, the practical details of the fight depend heavily on build and should not be confused with the Apostate Derelict’s own content.

Nearby enemy directory

The last two entries are ordinary wildlife reported in broad area databases. They are not unique to the church and are not required for any Apostate Derelict objective.

Nearby connections

Apostate Derelict sits within a wider group of northern Consecrated Snowfield landmarks.

Ordina, Liturgical Town

Ordina lies to the south-east and is the principal progression landmark for entering Miquella’s Haligtree. Its evergaol puzzle is separate from Latenna’s quest, although both locations are connected to the Snowfield route towards the Haligtree.

Yelough Anix Ruins

Yelough Anix Ruins are found in the south-western part of the Snowfield. They are associated with the Flame of Frenzy and should be treated as a separate hostile site.

Minor Erdtree

The Consecrated Snowfield Minor Erdtree is another separate landmark, with its own area boss and reward. It is not part of the Apostate Derelict church grounds.

Cave of the Forlorn, Yelough Anix Tunnel and Consecrated Snowfield Catacombs

These are separate dungeons distributed around the Snowfield. None is an internal branch of Apostate Derelict.

Mohgwyn Palace waygate

A waygate on the western side of the Consecrated Snowfield leads to Mohgwyn Palace. It is not directly connected to the church, although the open-world layout makes it possible to visit both locations during the same Snowfield expedition.

Lore and interpretation

Apostate Derelict is one of the clearest locations for understanding Latenna’s relationship with the Albinaurics. Latenna is not simply travelling towards a geographical destination. She is trying to return to the community and purpose represented by Phillia.

Phillia’s enormous size distinguishes her from the more familiar Albinaurics encountered elsewhere. The scene implies a form of continuity or hope for the Albinauric people, expressed through the “birthing droplet” mentioned in Latenna’s dialogue. The exact nature of that process is not fully explained by the game, so interpretations should remain separate from confirmed information.

The church’s isolation also fits the broader Snowfield theme. It stands beyond the main settlements and established roads, near the route taken by those seeking the Haligtree but not accepted into the Golden Order’s central world. The location is therefore both a physical endpoint and a narrative threshold.
