Overview
Belurat Gaol is an optional underground dungeon in the north-western part of Gravesite Plain, close to the lake west of Belurat, Tower Settlement. Despite sharing the name “Belurat”, it is not part of the tower settlement itself and should be treated as a separate location. The gaol lies outside the settlement’s walls and is reached from the open countryside rather than through Belurat’s main entrance.
The dungeon is built around a descending prison complex and a series of enormous jars. Its most disturbing feature is the presence of Jar Innards, the remains of condemned people who were butchered and sealed inside jars as part of the Hornsent practice of creating “saints”. The area combines environmental storytelling with a deliberately awkward traversal layout: narrow ledges, collapsing steps, jar lifts and a large underground labyrinth all lead down towards a self-imposed prisoner, Demi-Human Swordmaster Onze.
Belurat Gaol is not required for the main story, for access to Belurat, Tower Settlement, or for entry into the wider Realm of Shadow. It is nevertheless worth completing early because it provides a useful spirit ash, a Greater Potentate’s Cookbook, Lost Ashes of War, a Greatjar helmet and several early upgrade and consumable items.
Location and boundaries
Belurat Gaol belongs geographically to Gravesite Plain, the first major region of the Realm of Shadow. It is positioned near the western side of the plain, beneath and outside the wider Belurat area. The nearby Belurat, Tower Settlement is a separate legacy dungeon and sub-region associated with the Land of the Tower. Its own approach, buildings, bosses, Sites of Grace and story encounters should not be folded into the gaol’s directory.
The practical boundary of Belurat Gaol begins at the tunnel entrance marked by the dungeon’s Site of Grace. From there, the location consists of the prison descent, the jar-filled subterranean chambers, the large underground labyrinth and the final arena containing Onze. The surrounding lake, Belurat’s exterior approach and Belurat, Tower Settlement are neighbouring places rather than subareas of the gaol.
Neighbouring but separate
Access and nearby routes
The most direct approach begins from the Three-Path Cross area. Travel north and then west, passing around the lake. The entrance lies outside Belurat rather than inside the settlement’s defensive approach. Another commonly used reference point is Greatbridge, North, from which the gaol is reached by following the nearby terrain towards the lake and the tunnel entrance.
Belurat Gaol can be entered as soon as the player has access to this part of Gravesite Plain. There is no known requirement to defeat the Divine Beast Dancing Lion, enter Belurat, obtain a key or begin a particular NPC quest. The ordinary Shadow of the Erdtree access requirement still applies: the player must have reached the Realm of Shadow through the expansion’s entry route.
Suggested approach
- 01Start at Three-Path Cross.
- 02Travel north, then turn west towards the lake.
- 03Keep outside the main walls and approach the rocky area west of Belurat.
- 04Locate the tunnel entrance and activate the Belurat Gaol Site of Grace.
- 05Carry some healing and ranged options. Several enemies can attack from narrow ledges or behind jar structures.
- 06Treat every apparent drop as potentially deliberate. The dungeon frequently uses vertical falls and lifts as its intended route.
Geography and internal layout
Belurat Gaol is colder and more enclosed than the tower settlement above it. The early route resembles a conventional prison, with cells and narrow ledges cut into the rock. As the player descends, the architecture becomes less recognisably carceral and more like a ritual storage complex. Jars are used as obstacles, containers, enemies and environmental markers.
The dungeon’s most important structural feature is its verticality. The player does not simply follow a corridor to a boss door. Instead, the route repeatedly changes level:
The jar labyrinth is the area most likely to cause backtracking. It contains several branches and large jar obstructions, with useful loot placed away from the most obvious route. The maze is not merely decorative: it is the principal exploration section of the gaol and contains some of its best rewards.
Main internal areas
These are descriptive route divisions rather than separately named map regions. The game does not present them as independent locations.
Main internal areas
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Entrance and upper ledges | The first prison section, including the initial cells and ledges. |
| Collapsed stair chambers | The route after the early descent, with hostile prisoners and scattered consumables. |
| Lower prison and rock bridges | More open chambers connected by narrow crossings. |
| Jar labyrinth | The largest exploratory section, containing the Lost Ashes of War, cookbook and access to the Greatjar. |
| Giant jar statue area | A large visual landmark and the location of the Greatjar pickup. |
| Onze’s arena | The final chamber and boss encounter. |
Residents, enemies and factions
Belurat Gaol has no conventional settlement population. Its inhabitants are primarily prisoners, jar-related creatures and hostile supernatural remnants. The gaol’s environmental evidence suggests that it was used by the Hornsent to contain and process undesirables rather than to house ordinary political prisoners.
Jar Innards
Jar Innards are the dungeon’s defining enemies. Their associated item description explains that condemned people were sliced up and placed into jars, with the stated purpose of becoming saints. This places Belurat Gaol within the same disturbing Hornsent ritual tradition seen in other gaols in the Realm of Shadow.
They often block passages or emerge from jar structures. Their placement reinforces the idea that the gaol is both a prison and a processing site. They are not simply Living Jars behaving aggressively: the Innards represent human victims transformed through Hornsent ritual.
Living Jars and related jar creatures
Living Jars appear throughout the dungeon, including areas where they function as obstacles or ambush points. Some jars can be destroyed to reveal routes or pickups, while others are part of the dungeon’s visual language and should not be confused with ordinary containers.
Shadow Undead and prison enemies
Shadow-aligned humanoid enemies occupy the prison sections. They are particularly dangerous on narrow paths, where a stagger or knockback can cause a fatal fall. Some encounters are positioned to attack as the player approaches a cell or turns around after collecting an item.
Named figures
The following named figures are directly associated with the dungeon:
Onze is the boss. Yosh is not encountered as an independent NPC: the name appears through the spirit ash reward granted for defeating Onze.

Enemies directory
The following enemy types are associated with Belurat Gaol:
Enemy naming can vary between reference databases, especially where ordinary Shadow-aligned prisoners are grouped under different labels. The dungeon’s reliably recurring categories are jar creatures, Jar Innards, Living Jars and shadowed humanoid prisoners.

Items and collectibles
Belurat Gaol’s loot is mostly fixed. It includes upgrade materials, consumables, crafting resources and three particularly notable rewards: Lost Ashes of War, Greater Potentate’s Cookbook [11] and Greatjar.
Major rewards
The Greatjar is found beyond the jar labyrinth, near the giant jar statue. The cookbook is placed on a less obvious branch close to the labyrinth’s exit, while the Lost Ashes of War rewards an early side route that is easy to ignore if the player follows the apparent main path.
Other confirmed loot
Some guides and walkthrough records differ in their counting of repeated pickups, destructible-container contents and minor consumables. For that reason, the list above should be read as a directory of reported item names, not as a claim that each item appears only once. The major unique rewards are consistent across location guides.
Harvestable and enemy-drop materials
Enemy drops should not be confused with guaranteed corpse pickups. Their appearance can depend on the enemy defeated and ordinary item discovery rules.
Major rewards
| Item | Where or how to obtain it | Importance |
|---|---|---|
| Demi-Human Swordsman Yosh | Defeat Demi-Human Swordmaster Onze | Spirit ash reward |
| Lost Ashes of War | Explore the branching path near the start of the jar labyrinth | Used to duplicate eligible Ashes of War |
| Greater Potentate’s Cookbook [11] | Search the jar labyrinth near the exit route | Unlocks additional crafting recipes |
| Greatjar | Reach the area before the giant jar statue | Helmet with the Greatjar’s distinctive appearance |
Walkthrough
1. Activate the Site of Grace
Enter through the tunnel and activate Belurat Gaol. Before moving on, check the first cells and ledges carefully. The opening area establishes the dungeon’s main danger: enemies can push or stagger the player near a fall.
2. Descend the first prison section
Follow the narrow route downwards. Check cells and side alcoves before committing to the next descent. Some early pickups are placed near or inside prison spaces, and the layout encourages the player to look behind corners rather than simply sprint downhill.
Be cautious when approaching the first cell. A prisoner can rush from cover and attempt to knock the player from the ledge. This is one of several points where a shield, poise, ranged attack or cautious lock-on is useful.
3. Survive the collapsing stairs
Continue until the stairs collapse beneath the player. This fall is part of the intended route, not a mistake or a hidden death drop. Once below, clear the nearby shadowed enemies before exploring the side chambers.
The open cells and rock shelves around this point contain minor materials, including Frozen Maggots and other consumables. Do not cross the next narrow bridge while enemies remain behind you, since retreating across it under pressure is dangerous.
4. Cross the rock bridges
Move across the narrow rock bridges and defeat enemies on the far side before inspecting the surrounding alcoves. The route begins to widen, but the same fall hazard remains. Keep the camera angled towards upper ledges and jar structures, as enemies can appear from positions that are not immediately visible from the bridge.
5. Enter the jar labyrinth
The jar labyrinth is the dungeon’s principal exploration puzzle. Jars block direct lines of travel, while side passages lead to rewards and dead ends. Search each branch before taking a lift or dropping into the next chamber.
A common mistake is to move directly towards the apparent exit and leave the cookbook or Lost Ashes of War behind. The safest method is to mark the route mentally at each junction and return to unexplored openings before using a lift.
6. Reach the giant jar statue
Continue beyond the labyrinth and use the jar lift where necessary. The area before the giant jar statue contains the Greatjar pickup. This is one of the dungeon’s clearest landmarks, so use it to confirm that the labyrinth section has been properly completed.
7. Enter Onze’s arena
Proceed from the giant jar area towards the final chamber. Activate any available checkpoint or return to the Site of Grace if you want to spend runes before the boss. The arena is more open than the approach and removes most of the dungeon’s ledge-based hazards.
8. Defeat Demi-Human Swordmaster Onze
Demi-Human Swordmaster Onze is an agile melee boss who relies on rapid movement, sudden gap-closing attacks and short openings. Avoid panic-healing at close range: his mobility allows him to punish long recovery animations.
On defeat, Onze awards Demi-Human Swordsman Yosh, a spirit ash depicting the swordsman associated with the boss’s story. The reward description connects Onze with devotion to the Star-Lined Sword and a self-imposed imprisonment undertaken to forestall the ruin he believed awaited at the end of the stars.
5. Enter the jar labyrinth: The main rewards in this section are
- 01Lost Ashes of War, found along an early side route.
- 02Greater Potentate’s Cookbook [11], found on a branch near the labyrinth’s exit.
- 03Access towards the giant jar statue and Greatjar.
Boss: Demi-Human Swordmaster Onze
Onze is unusual among the gaol bosses because the encounter is tied closely to the dungeon’s lore rather than to a larger faction quest. The location describes him as a master swordsman who imprisoned himself. His isolation contrasts with the mass imprisonment and ritual slaughter represented by the Jar Innards.
The fight is primarily a test of timing and spacing. Onze is quick enough to punish slow recovery animations, but the arena gives the player more room than the earlier ledges. Players who struggled with the dungeon’s cramped spaces may find the boss easier once they stop trying to corner him and instead wait for a committed attack.
Facilities and services
Belurat Gaol contains no confirmed merchant, smithing table, crafting shop, summoning pool or permanent NPC service. The Belurat Gaol Site of Grace is the dungeon’s main facility and functions as the return point for rest, levelling and flask management.
The name of the location should not be confused with a commercial or residential district. There are no businesses, purchasable properties or functional storefronts inside the gaol. Any jars, cells or architectural spaces that resemble storage or industrial facilities are environmental features rather than usable services.
Hazards and secrets
Narrow ledges
The earliest prison sections are more dangerous than their enemies suggest. A basic prisoner attack can become lethal if it causes a fall. Fight close to rock walls where possible and avoid rolling blindly near the edge.
Collapsing stairs
The collapsed stairway is an intended transition into the lower dungeon. It cannot be treated as a conventional staircase, so players should avoid wasting time searching for a missing switch or key.
Jar ambushes
Some jars conceal enemies or restrict movement. Break suspicious containers before committing to a narrow route, especially where there is no room to sidestep.
The labyrinth’s false main path
The most important secret is not an illusory wall but the placement of rewards away from the obvious route. The Lost Ashes of War and Greater Potentate’s Cookbook [11] are both easy to miss if the player follows the first apparently sensible route through the jars.
No known progression lock
Belurat Gaol does not have a known story-state transformation comparable to some major Realm of Shadow areas. Its entrance, boss and loot are available independently of the major Belurat, Messmer and Enir-Ilim progression states. It is therefore best treated as a stable optional dungeon rather than a missable quest location.
Lore
Belurat Gaol provides some of the clearest physical evidence for the Hornsent treatment of the condemned. The Jar Innards description states that people were cut apart and stuffed into jars so that they could become saints. The gaol therefore presents sainthood not as a purely spiritual ideal but as the result of a violent ritual process imposed on unwanted people.
This makes the dungeon an important companion to the broader story of Belurat, Tower Settlement. Belurat was once a Hornsent settlement associated with divine-beast ritual and the tower culture, but it was later besieged during Messmer’s crusade. The gaol shows a different side of that civilisation: not ceremonial towers and festivals, but confinement, bodily transformation and institutional cruelty.
Onze’s story adds another layer. He is not presented as one of the gaol’s ordinary victims. Instead, he is a swordsman who chose imprisonment for himself after reaching a grim conclusion about the end of the star procession. The contrast between self-imposed confinement and the forced imprisonment of the Jar Innards is deliberate or, at minimum, strongly supported by the dungeon’s arrangement.
