About this guide
Spoilers: This guide covers the opening region of Shadow of the Erdtree, including optional dungeons, NPC encounters, field bosses, quest developments and routes into later areas.
Overview
Gravesite Plain is the principal starting region of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. It occupies the south-western part of the Realm of Shadow and combines a broad open plain with the western and southern coastlines, the road to Castle Ensis, the approach to Belurat, Tower Settlement, and several optional caves, gaols and underground routes.
The name can be misleading. Gravesite Plain is not merely the wheat-covered area around the first Site of Grace. In the broad regional hierarchy used by the game and major reference maps, it includes or connects to several substantial subareas: Cerulean Coast, Charo’s Hidden Grave, Stone Coffin Fissure, Foot of the Jagged Peak and Jagged Peak. It also contains the legacy dungeons Belurat, Tower Settlement and Castle Ensis.
The region is designed to teach the central rules of the expansion. Exploration is less about increasing your ordinary level and more about finding Scadutree Fragments, which improve the Scadutree Blessing and significantly affect damage dealt and received in the Realm of Shadow. The area also introduces the DLC’s vertical map design, where apparently inaccessible cliffs, coastlines and ravines often become reachable through a distant cave, riverbed or concealed descent.
What belongs to Gravesite Plain?
The broad regional grouping includes the following named areas:
Core Gravesite Plain
This is the central field and its immediate surrounding hills, ruins and roads.
Legacy dungeons
Both are major self-contained dungeons, with their own routes, enemies, Sites of Grace, rewards and bosses. They should not be treated as interchangeable parts of the open field.
Southern and south-eastern subregions
The wider region also reaches towards the southern coast and Jagged Peak.
Some maps and guides group these places under a “Southern Shore” heading, while the region reference hierarchy lists them as subregions associated with Gravesite Plain. This difference is organisational rather than a separate game mode or alternate continuity.

Southern and south-eastern subregions
What should not be folded into the region?
The following are neighbouring or connected areas, but should be kept distinct:
The map can make the southern shore look like one uninterrupted district, but the game’s named subregions and dungeon boundaries matter for navigation, map references, boss listings and walkthrough progression.
---
Gravesite Plain is a wide, windblown landscape covered with tall pale grass, scorched ruins and ghostly grave markers. Spiritgraves rise from the ground like pale stone ribs or skeletal monuments. The visual language immediately establishes that the Realm of Shadow is a land of burial, suppression and historical trauma rather than simply another wilderness zone.
To the north-west, the silhouette of Belurat, Tower Settlement dominates the landscape. The settlement’s great tower and surrounding walls provide the region’s most obvious landmark. To the east, the road narrows towards Castle Ensis, whose fortified position controls the main route into Scadu Altus. Southwards, the terrain breaks into ravines and riverbeds leading to the blue coast, Stone Coffin Fissure and the dragon-infested approaches to Jagged Peak.
The region’s verticality is easy to underestimate. Several cliffs cannot be climbed directly, but can be reached by:
This is why a point that appears close on the map can require a long detour.

What should not be folded into the region?
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Scadu Altus | the region beyond Castle Ensis and the eastern route. |
| Shadow Keep | a separate major dungeon in Scadu Altus. |
| Bonny Village | part of the eastern approach beyond the normal Gravesite Plain routes. |
| Abyssal Woods | a later region, not a Gravesite Plain subarea. |
| Enir-Ilim | the late-game final area, separate from Belurat. |
| Lands Between locations | the base-game world remains a separate continuity and map. |
Arrival from Mohgwyn Palace
After entering the Realm of Shadow, the player emerges in a small underground chamber beneath the Church of Benediction. The first route climbs through the church area and opens onto the main plain.
Recommended opening sequence
The game does not require the player to follow this exact order, but it provides a practical difficulty curve.
Recommended opening sequence
- 01Leave the arrival grotto and activate the nearby Site of Grace.
- 02Search the Church of Benediction and its surrounding ledges.
- 03Travel towards the first map fragment.
- 04Activate the Gravesite Plain Site of Grace.
- 05Collect nearby Scadutree Fragments before challenging major bosses.
- 06Explore west towards the Western Nameless Mausoleum and Scorched Ruins.
- 07Return to the central road and decide whether to go north-west to Belurat or east towards Castle Ensis.
Western route
The western route runs through the open field towards the Scorched Ruins and the Western Nameless Mausoleum. It is suitable for early exploration, although Gravebirds and other hostile creatures can punish careless movement.
The Western Nameless Mausoleum is an optional combat dungeon. Its exterior is guarded by Spirit Eels and Gravebirds, and its interior contains a named mausoleum boss encounter. The area is independent of Belurat and is not required to enter the tower settlement.
North-western route to Belurat
The route to Belurat passes through the central and north-western plain, eventually reaching the Main Gate Cross and the approach to the tower settlement. Belurat is the region’s first large legacy dungeon and contains a large concentration of Hornsent architecture, rooftops, sewers, courtyards and vertical shortcuts.
The settlement’s main boss is the Divine Beast Dancing Lion. Defeating it is not strictly the only way to explore the broader region, but the fight is the principal conclusion of Belurat and provides important story and reward material.
Eastern route to Castle Ensis
The eastern road crosses the area around the Three-Path Cross, the Greatbridge, North, and the Castle Front. Castle Ensis is the main route towards Scadu Altus and culminates in the boss fight against Rellana, Twin Moon Knight. Guides commonly treat Rellana as a mandatory progression boss for the ordinary eastern route, although the wider DLC contains alternative paths into later regions.
Before entering the castle, search the nearby Miquella Crosses and speak to the NPCs gathered around them. These encounters are important for the expansion’s travelling NPC storyline.
Southern route through Ellac River
The south-eastern side of Gravesite Plain descends into the Ellac River. This route is one of the region’s most useful examples of environmental navigation.
The riverbed is not always a straightforward path. Poisonous or swamp-like sections, narrow ledges and aggressive enemies can obscure the correct route. The player should look for cave mouths and the continuation of the river rather than trying to climb the surrounding cliffs.
Route to Jagged Peak
The route towards Jagged Peak passes through the Dragon’s Pit. The dungeon contains the Ancient Dragon-Man, whose defeat opens the normal path towards the dragon communion area and the wider Jagged Peak route. The Dragon’s Pit and the southern dragon areas should be recorded separately from the central plain even though they are grouped under the region’s wider hierarchy.
---
Belurat, Tower Settlement
Belurat is a Hornsent settlement built around a monumental spiral tower. It is a legacy dungeon rather than a normal town. Its streets, rooftops and interior passages contain many elevation changes, concealed routes and ambushes.
The Hornsent Grandam is an important story-associated character. Her interactions are tied to Belurat and to the player’s relationship with the Hornsent legacy. The Divine Beast Dancing Lion is the dungeon’s principal boss.
Castle Ensis
Castle Ensis is a fortified bridge-and-castle complex on the eastern edge of the central plain. It is more compact than Belurat but heavily defended by soldiers, knights and ranged attackers.
The dungeon’s defining encounter is Rellana, Twin Moon Knight. The castle also contains a Miquella Cross, useful equipment and routes that demonstrate how the DLC’s legacy dungeons blend open-world geography with traditional Souls-style shortcuts.
Cerulean Coast
Cerulean Coast lies south of the main plain. Its blue grass, open shoreline and enormous underground structures make it visually distinct from the scorched central fields.
Cerulean Coast is best explored after opening the Ellac River route, although a player can reach portions of it before completing Castle Ensis.
Charo’s Hidden Grave
Charo’s Hidden Grave is a concealed red-tinted area reached from the southern coastal region. It is associated with graveyards, blood-red vegetation and the Lamenter’s Gaol. Despite its connection to Gravesite Plain in broad regional listings, it should be treated as a distinct subarea with its own atmosphere and encounter set.
Stone Coffin Fissure
Stone Coffin Fissure is a deep coastal descent containing a long linear dungeon route and a major boss encounter. It is reached from the southern coast rather than from the central field.
The fissure is a good example of the DLC’s layered map construction. The player appears to be walking along a shoreline, then gradually descends into a huge subterranean environment.
Foot of the Jagged Peak and Jagged Peak
These areas form the southern dragon route. The normal entrance is through Dragon’s Pit, after defeating the Ancient Dragon-Man. The path then continues towards dragon battles, dragon communion lore and the Jagged Peak summit.
Jagged Peak is not simply another hill within the central plain. It has its own regional identity, boss progression and story content.

Story-associated characters
The following named characters are associated with Gravesite Plain or its immediate subareas:
These characters are not all permanent residents. Some are visitors whose quest stages advance elsewhere. For that reason, a character’s appearance in Gravesite Plain does not mean that the character’s entire questline belongs to this region.
NPC progression caution
The travelling NPCs’ dialogue and locations can change after major events in the DLC. In particular, advancing through the main route and reaching later story locations can alter their availability. A cautious player should:
The NPC questline has several branching rewards and invasion or summon outcomes, so a single universal “best order” is not always possible.
NPC progression caution
- 01Speak to every named NPC at each early location.
- 02Exhaust dialogue rather than stopping after one exchange.
- 03Rest at a Site of Grace and revisit the area.
- 04Check Miquella Crosses after major story developments.
- 05Avoid assuming that a missing NPC has died or vanished permanently.
Ordinary inhabitants and hostile groups
The Hornsent are particularly important to the region’s identity. Their buildings, religious objects and surviving warriors connect the open plain to Belurat and to the wider historical conflict of the Realm of Shadow.
---
The following directory separates bosses found in the broad Gravesite Plain grouping from encounters in its child areas.
Belurat, Tower Settlement
Castle Ensis
Southern subareas
Some lists classify individual field bosses differently depending on the map boundary used. The key distinction is whether the encounter is physically on the central plain, in a named dungeon, or in a southern child area.
Practical order
This is a recommendation rather than a mandatory progression order. The DLC permits substantial sequence variation.
---
Practical order: A reasonable difficulty-conscious order is
- 01Logur, the Beast Claw, if encountered early.
- 02Western Nameless Mausoleum.
- 03Belurat side areas and Belurat Gaol.
- 04Divine Beast Dancing Lion.
- 05Ghostflame Dragon and the central field Furnace Golem.
- 06Castle Ensis.
- 07Fog Rift Catacombs and Dragon’s Pit.
- 08Cerulean Coast and Stone Coffin Fissure.
- 09Jagged Peak and Bayle.
Dungeons and enclosed locations
The Gravesite Plain reference directory identifies these as the principal locations associated with the region and its broad southern grouping.
Decorative or non-functional structures
Not every named-looking building is an interactive shop or service. The region contains ruined shelters, abandoned rest stops, churches and background structures that may contain only enemies, lore objects or ordinary loot. A name such as “Traveler’s Rest” does not imply a functioning inn, merchant or purchasable property.
---
The following Sites of Grace are associated with the central region and its connected subareas:
These checkpoints are not all located in the same terrain type. The list includes open-world grace points, legacy-dungeon checkpoints, cave entrances and the southern route towards Jagged Peak.
Dungeons and enclosed locations
Decorative or non-functional structures
Checkpoint priorities
The Miquella Crosses near the first several Sites of Grace are also important because they provide Scadutree Fragments and NPC quest meetings.
---
Activate these early
- 01Gravesite Plain.
- 02Three-Path Cross.
- 03Main Gate Cross.
- 04Castle Front.
- 05Scorched Ruins.
- 06Ellac River Cave.
- 07Dragon’s Pit.
Scadutree Fragments
Scadutree Fragments are the most important regional collectibles. They are commonly found near:
They improve the Scadutree Blessing at Sites of Grace. The blessing is separate from the character’s ordinary level, weapon upgrades and flask upgrades.
Early Gravesite Plain fragments are particularly valuable because the DLC assumes the player will use the blessing system. If enemies seem to inflict extreme damage or take too little damage, the first response should be to explore more thoroughly rather than simply grinding runes.
Revered Spirit Ashes
Revered Spirit Ashes improve the Revered Spirit Ash Blessing, which strengthens summoned spirits and Torrent in the Realm of Shadow. They are found at churches, statues and other sacred locations, including areas connected to the southern route.
Other collectible categories
The region contains examples of most of the DLC’s ordinary collectible types:
Drops from field enemies must be distinguished from fixed placements. For example, Gravebird or soldier equipment may be random enemy drops, while a weapon on a corpse, a cookbook in a chest or a fragment at a cross is a fixed acquisition.
Because item placement can be patched in later versions, item-by-item inventories should be checked against a current interactive map or individual item pages before being treated as a definitive completion list. The available region directories confirm the major location structure, but the evidence consulted here is not sufficient to claim a fully exhaustive item catalogue.
---
Gravesite Plain does not function as a town hub with a central permanent shop district. Services are distributed among:
Do not infer a shop from a decorative building. The churches, traveller’s rest and abandoned settlements are landmarks, not automatically functional businesses.
The most important practical “service” in the region is the blessing system:
---
Route A: safe opening sweep
This route gives early map knowledge, blessing resources and several NPC conversations without committing to a major legacy dungeon.
Route A: safe opening sweep: steps
- 01Leave the arrival grotto beneath the Church of Benediction.
- 02Activate the first Site of Grace.
- 03Explore the church and nearby cliffs.
- 04Ride towards the Gravesite Plain map fragment.
- 05Activate the Gravesite Plain Site of Grace.
- 06Visit the nearest Miquella Cross.
- 07Search the open field for a second early blessing item.
- 08Return to the central road and speak to NPCs at the Three-Path Cross.
- 09Ride west to the Scorched Ruins.
- 10Decide whether to attempt the Western Nameless Mausoleum.
- 11Return to the main road and continue towards Belurat.
Route B: Belurat
- 01Approach the Main Gate Cross.
- 02Search the entrance area before climbing.
- 03Activate the dungeon’s early Grace.
- 04Explore rooftops and side streets rather than following the most obvious staircase.
- 05Locate the Hornsent Grandam and exhaust her dialogue.
- 06Open shortcuts back to the entrance.
- 07Clear the sewer and lower routes.
- 08Collect Scadutree-related resources around the settlement.
- 09Enter the Divine Beast Dancing Lion arena when prepared.
- 10Return to the settlement afterwards because some interactions and routes become more useful after the boss.
Route C: Castle Ensis
- 01Speak to the NPC group at Three-Path Cross.
- 02Follow the eastern road to Greatbridge, North.
- 03Activate the approach Grace.
- 04Search the bridge and outer camp for supplies.
- 05Enter Castle Ensis.
- 06Prioritise ladders, side paths and shortcut doors.
- 07Activate Castle Front and later checkpoints.
- 08Search for the Miquella Cross inside the castle.
- 09Prepare for Rellana’s twin damage types and fast close-range pressure.
- 10Continue into Scadu Altus after the castle if following the main eastern route.
Route D: southern river and coast
---
Route D: southern river and coast: steps
- 01Begin at Ellac River Cave or the nearest central grace.
- 02Follow the river downstream.
- 03Search cave entrances rather than attempting impossible cliff climbs.
- 04Visit Rivermouth Cave.
- 05Continue towards the southern coast.
- 06Explore Cerulean Coast before entering the deepest optional dungeons.
- 07Enter Dragon’s Pit if pursuing Jagged Peak.
- 08Defeat Ancient Dragon-Man.
- 09Continue towards the dragon communion route.
- 10Return later for Charo’s Hidden Grave and Stone Coffin Fissure if you want to separate the region’s optional story threads.
Gravebirds
Gravebirds are dangerous because of their mobility, sudden lunges and ability to attack from rooftops or broken ruins. They are especially common around Belurat and the Western Nameless Mausoleum. Use lock-on carefully, watch for elevated perches and avoid fighting several at once in confined spaces.
Furnace Golems
Furnace Golems are oversized roaming threats. They are not ordinary field enemies and can dominate the landscape around them. Their attacks cover a large area, so fighting on foot requires attention to terrain and timing. Some encounters reward studying the environment rather than trying to trade hits directly.
Curseblades
Curseblades are fast, acrobatic enemies who can appear in narrow routes and ambush the player from above. Their movements make them particularly dangerous when combined with groups of ordinary soldiers.
Poison and ravines
The Ellac River route uses poison-like terrain and awkward elevation changes to make the southern route less direct. Preserve healing resources, use Torrent where safe, and activate every Grace before pushing into a new underground section.
Optional does not mean low level
The Western Nameless Mausoleum, Fog Rift Catacombs, Dragon’s Pit and Stone Coffin Fissure are optional in terms of the main path, but their bosses are balanced as serious encounters. The DLC’s blessing system is the intended answer to the region’s difficulty, not merely additional rune farming.
---
Gravesite Plain’s name reflects more than the number of graves in the landscape. The region presents the Realm of Shadow as a place where discarded peoples, defeated histories and suppressed religious traditions have been gathered together.
The Hornsent architecture of Belurat, the grave markers scattered across the plain and the southern dragon traditions all point towards a world shaped by old violence. The region’s geography also links several groups that initially appear unrelated:
The Scadutree Blessing reinforces this thematic structure. The player becomes stronger not simply by levelling, but by recovering traces of Miquella’s journey and using them to survive the shadowed land.
---
Southern route
---
Is Gravesite Plain the first area of the DLC?
Yes. The player arrives in the Realm of Shadow in the Gravesite Plain region after interacting with Miquella’s arm at Mohgwyn Palace.
Does Gravesite Plain include Belurat?
Yes. Belurat, Tower Settlement is a legacy dungeon within the broad Gravesite Plain region, but it should be treated as a separate dungeon area rather than as ordinary open field.
Does Gravesite Plain include Castle Ensis?
Yes. Castle Ensis is listed among the region’s locations and is the principal eastern legacy dungeon. It leads towards Scadu Altus.
Is Cerulean Coast a separate region?
It is a distinct subregion, but broad Elden Ring location hierarchies associate it with Gravesite Plain and the southern shore. Guides may present it as a separate map district for convenience.
Do I need to defeat Rellana to leave Gravesite Plain?
Not necessarily. Castle Ensis is the normal eastern route, but the Realm of Shadow has alternate paths and vertical connections. Defeating Rellana is nevertheless the principal progression route through the castle.
What should I do if everything hits too hard?
Collect more Scadutree Fragments and Revered Spirit Ashes, then upgrade the relevant blessings at a Site of Grace. These systems are specifically designed for Realm of Shadow progression.
Is every building a shop?
No. Churches, ruined settlements, the traveller’s rest and similar structures are often landmarks or combat locations. Their names do not establish that they provide services.
---
This guide resolves the broad regional hierarchy and distinguishes the core plain, legacy dungeons, southern subregions and neighbouring areas. The main unresolved limitation is item-level exhaustiveness. The sources consulted provide reliable regional, subregional, landmark, Site of Grace and broad boss directories, but they do not expose a complete current inventory of every corpse item, chest, random drop, cookbook, spell, upgrade material and quest reward in every child area.
Accordingly, this guide should be treated as a researched regional guide, not a definitive 100% item checklist. A true completion version would need separate current pages or an interactive map for every included subarea, followed by an independently checked consolidation of all fixed placements, random drops, NPC rewards and missable quest outcomes.
