About this guide
Base game location guide. Major spoilers for Ranni’s questline, Glintstone Dragon Adula and the Age of Stars ending.
Overview
The Cathedral of Manus Celes is a ruined church on the Moonlight Altar, a high plateau in southern Liurnia of the Lakes. It is one of Elden Ring’s most important late-game story locations, despite being a small, largely empty building. The cathedral is the final destination of Ranni the Witch’s questline, the arena for the second and final phase of the Glintstone Dragon Adula encounter, and the hiding place of Ranni’s dead Two Fingers.
The cathedral itself should not be confused with the whole Moonlight Altar region. The wider plateau contains several separate locations, including Chelona’s Rise, Lunar Estate Ruins, Moonfolk Ruins, the Ringleader’s Evergaol and Deep Ainsel Well. The guide below treats the Cathedral of Manus Celes as the primary location, while recording those neighbouring places separately rather than folding the entire plateau into the cathedral.
---
Required route
The cathedral is not reachable during ordinary exploration of Liurnia. The lift leading from the underground route to the Moonlight Altar remains sealed until the relevant point in Ranni’s questline.
The lift’s seal is tied specifically to possessing the Dark Moon Ring, not simply to defeating Astel. The Moonlight Altar is therefore a late-stage destination in Ranni’s quest rather than an area that can be reached early through ordinary climbing or horseback exploration.
The practical route is
- 01Enter Ranni’s Rise in the Three Sisters and begin Ranni’s quest.
- 02Defeat Starscourge Radahn so that the route into Nokron opens.
- 03Retrieve the Fingerslayer Blade from Nokron and return it to Ranni.
- 04Follow the quest through Ainsel River Main.
- 05Obtain the Miniature Ranni and exhaust her dialogue at the underground Sites of Grace.
- 06Defeat the Baleful Shadow and receive the Discarded Palace Key.
- 07Open the chest in the Raya Lucaria Grand Library to obtain the Dark Moon Ring.
- 08Continue through the Lake of Rot and defeat Astel, Naturalborn of the Void.
- 09Use the lift beyond Astel to reach the Moonlight Altar.
- 10Follow the plateau road towards the cathedral.
Navigation advice
After emerging on the Moonlight Altar, ride north-east across the plateau. The cathedral is one of the most prominent structures in the area, but Glintstone Dragon Adula can appear in front of it. You do not need to defeat Adula to enter the cathedral. If the dragon is active, ride past it and use the church walls and interior as cover.
The Cathedral of Manus Celes Site of Grace is inside the building, close to the central floor opening. Once activated, it becomes the best return point for both the dragon fight and the final stages of Ranni’s quest.
---
The ruined cathedral
The building is a large, abandoned church with a central nave, broken walls and extensive exposure to the night sky. Its architectural style resembles the Church of Vows and, in the base game’s wider visual language, the later Cathedral of Manus Metyr from Shadow of the Erdtree. Those locations should remain separate: Manus Metyr belongs to the Realm of Shadow and is not a subarea of Manus Celes.
The cathedral contains no normal congregation, merchant, smith or working religious service. Its importance is symbolic and narrative rather than civic. The building functions as a final meeting place for Ranni and as a concealed tomb for the Two Fingers assigned to her.
Central Site of Grace
The Site of Grace is positioned inside the church, surrounded by the cathedral’s distinctive collection of Starlight Shards. It is close to the hole leading underground, making it convenient to:

The floor opening
Near the rear portion of the cathedral is a large hole in the floor. It is easy to miss because it is not presented as a conventional staircase or dungeon entrance. Drop through it carefully to reach a small cavern beneath the church.
The drop is survivable when performed properly, but avoid rolling blindly into the opening. The cavern below is not a conventional combat dungeon. Its purpose is to reveal what happened to Ranni’s Two Fingers and to provide the final interaction required for the quest.
Underground cavern
The Two Fingers are visibly dead, confirming that Ranni’s rebellion has reached its intended conclusion. This is a story scene rather than a boss encounter. The body cannot be treated as an ordinary enemy, looted like a corpse or used as a combat target.
---
Ranni the Witch
Ranni is not present in the cathedral as a conventional NPC who stands in the main hall and offers a dialogue menu. Instead, the cathedral is the final meeting point of her questline. After the player reaches the underground chamber and uses the Dark Moon Ring on Ranni, she acknowledges the player as her consort and awards the Dark Moon Greatsword.
This interaction also advances the player towards the Age of Stars ending. Completing Ranni’s quest does not automatically force that ending. At the end of the game, the player must choose Ranni’s summon sign after defeating the final boss if they want to begin that ending.
Ranni’s local interaction
The ring is not optional for the final interaction. Reaching the cathedral without first opening the Grand Library chest leaves the quest unfinished.

The Two Fingers
The Two Fingers found beneath the cathedral are not an active NPC and do not provide dialogue, services or an item reward. Their corpse is a major story landmark. Ranni’s entire quest is concerned with escaping the influence of the Greater Will and rejecting the role imposed on her as an Empyrean. The dead Two Fingers beneath Manus Celes provide the clearest visual evidence that she has acted against her assigned order.
Named directory: Factions and powers represented
No ordinary inhabitants, guards, clergy, merchants or law-enforcement characters are stationed inside the cathedral.

Glintstone Dragon Adula
Adula is first encountered outside Ranni’s Rise in the Three Sisters. That initial encounter is not the final battle. At roughly half health, the dragon leaves, and the complete encounter takes place on the Moonlight Altar in front of the Cathedral of Manus Celes.
At the cathedral, Adula is a full boss encounter. The plateau provides considerable room for mounted movement, and the cathedral itself can be used to break line of sight from several attacks.
Rewards
Adula’s Moonblade is a cold-based sorcery that creates a magical greatsword and releases a frost wave. It is one of the location’s main combat rewards and is not found as a chest item. It is awarded for defeating Adula at the Moonlight Altar.
Named directory: Enemies and bosses
The smaller dragons roaming elsewhere on the Moonlight Altar are neighbouring overworld enemies rather than named occupants of the cathedral.

Rewards
| Reward | Amount or result |
|---|---|
| Runes | 120,000 in New Game |
| Dragon Heart | 3 |
| Sorcery | Adula’s Moonblade |

Starlight Shards
Several Starlight Shards are arranged around the cathedral, especially near the Site of Grace and the interior edges of the ruined building. They are fixed world items, not random drops.
Starlight Shards are used by Preceptor Seluvis in connection with his puppet-related services. They are also valuable as general exploration rewards, but collecting them at Manus Celes does not create a shop or service within the cathedral.
The location is commonly recorded as containing ten Starlight Shards. Because these are placed around the church and its immediate grounds rather than in a conventional chest room, search the interior perimeter and the area around the central grace carefully.
Named directory: Fixed collectible categories
There are no verified cathedral chests, Stonesword Key gates, Sacred Tears, Golden Seeds, map fragments or upgrade materials listed as fixed rewards inside the building.
Acquisition route
- 01Enter the cathedral after reaching the Moonlight Altar.
- 02Activate the Site of Grace.
- 03Circle the interior walls and the broken sections of the church.
- 04Collect the shards before dropping through the central opening.
- 05Check the exterior approach if one appears to have been missed.
Dark Moon Greatsword
The Dark Moon Greatsword is not a normal floor pickup. It is awarded by Ranni after the player descends through the cathedral and uses the Dark Moon Ring on her.
This distinction matters because the sword is associated with the cathedral but is not physically found in a chest or on a corpse there.
Acquisition conditions
The sword is a quest reward, not a random drop and not a reward for defeating Adula.
Adula’s Moonblade and Dragon Hearts
Both are boss rewards. They cannot be acquired by searching the church, bypassing Adula or interacting with Ranni.

Route A: reaching the cathedral
If the lift remains sealed, the Dark Moon Ring requirement has not been satisfied, regardless of whether other parts of the quest have been completed.
Route A: reaching the cathedral: steps
- 01Progress Ranni’s quest until the path through Nokron and Ainsel River becomes available.
- 02Defeat Astel, Naturalborn of the Void.
- 03Make sure you have obtained the Dark Moon Ring from the chest in the Raya Lucaria Grand Library.
- 04Use the lift after Astel to reach the Moonlight Altar.
- 05Ride towards the cathedral.
- 06Activate the Site of Grace inside the church.
Route B: completing the cathedral objective
- 01Enter the cathedral and rest at the Site of Grace.
- 02Search the church for Starlight Shards.
- 03If desired, leave through the front and fight Glintstone Dragon Adula.
- 04Return inside and locate the large hole in the floor.
- 05Drop into the underground cavern.
- 06Interact with Ranni while carrying the Dark Moon Ring.
- 07Receive the Dark Moon Greatsword.
- 08Return to the surface and explore the other Moonlight Altar locations.
Route C: fighting Adula safely
The dragon can be fought before or after descending into the cathedral. Defeating it is not required to complete Ranni’s final interaction.
---
The following locations belong to the wider Moonlight Altar area, not to the cathedral itself.
The Moonlight Altar is also home to other dragons and the approach route from the underground lift. These are useful nearby connections, but none should be treated as rooms or subareas of Manus Celes.
Route C: fighting Adula safely: steps
- 01Start from the Cathedral of Manus Celes Site of Grace.
- 02Approach the front of the cathedral on Torrent.
- 03Keep the building nearby as a retreat option.
- 04Attack the dragon’s legs or rear quarters when its breath and blade attacks are directed elsewhere.
- 05Watch for the frost wave from Adula’s Moonblade.
- 06Use the open plateau to disengage rather than becoming trapped against the church.
- 07Collect the Dragon Hearts and Adula’s Moonblade after victory.
Route C: fighting Adula safely
| Nearby location | Relationship to the cathedral |
|---|---|
| Chelona’s Rise | Separate tower on the plateau, associated with a later sorcery puzzle |
| Deep Ainsel Well | Separate access point and map-area landmark |
| Lunar Estate Ruins | Independent ruin complex |
| Moonfolk Ruins | Independent ruin complex with its own enemies and loot |
| Ringleader’s Evergaol | Separate Evergaol containing Alecto, Black Knife Ringleader |
| Altar South | General overworld portion of the Moonlight Altar |
Suggested wider exploration route
This route prevents the common mistake of assuming that every Moonlight Altar landmark belongs to the cathedral.
---
After activating the cathedral grace
- 01Deal with or bypass Adula.
- 02Complete Ranni’s interaction beneath the church.
- 03Travel south-west to inspect the Moonfolk Ruins.
- 04Visit the Lunar Estate Ruins.
- 05Explore the Ringleader’s Evergaol if you have not defeated Alecto.
- 06Investigate Chelona’s Rise when pursuing Ranni’s Dark Moon sorcery.
- 07Use Deep Ainsel Well and the surrounding plateau paths to fill in any remaining map exploration.
The cathedral’s central hole
The main secret is visible once identified but easy to overlook on a first visit. It is a story entrance rather than a combat dungeon. Do not expect a long underground area with branching corridors.
The dead Two Fingers
The corpse beneath the cathedral is the most significant lore reveal in the location. It explains why Ranni is no longer waiting in her tower and provides the immediate context for the Dark Moon Ring interaction.
Adula’s relocation
Players who fought Adula near Ranni’s Rise may incorrectly assume that the dragon has been defeated when it disappears. The first encounter is only an early stage. The dragon’s complete reward set is obtained at Manus Celes.
Quest progression
The cathedral’s final interaction is missable in the practical sense that it cannot be performed until the required quest items and steps are complete. Entering the building early is impossible through the normal route, and reaching the Moonlight Altar without the Dark Moon Ring leaves the final scene unavailable.
The location does not have a known ordinary NPC massacre state or an alternate merchant inventory. Its changes are primarily quest-state changes:
---
The cathedral’s name is usually discussed in relation to the word manus, meaning “hand”. The second element, Celes, has been interpreted in several ways, including associations with concealment and the heavens. The game does not provide a definitive in-world translation, so readings such as “hidden hand” or “celestial hand” should be treated as interpretation rather than confirmed localisation.
The “hidden hand” reading fits the physical layout: the cathedral conceals a Two Fingers beneath its floor. The celestial interpretation also fits the location’s moonlit plateau, its Starlight Shards and Ranni’s rejection of the Greater Will’s order. The evidence supports the connection, but not a single canonical translation.
The cathedral’s architecture is also significant. Its ruined form resembles other finger-associated structures, particularly the Cathedral of Manus Metyr introduced in Shadow of the Erdtree. The two are separate locations in separate game continuities and should not be combined geographically. Their similar names and architecture are nevertheless an intentional point of comparison in the wider setting.
Ranni’s presence beneath the cathedral reverses the expected hierarchy of the Lands Between. A cathedral normally suggests an active seat of worship, but Manus Celes is empty and broken. The only hidden “authority” beneath it is dead. Ranni’s final act here is therefore not an audience with the Two Fingers but a declaration of independence from them.

Quest progression
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Before reaching the plateau | inaccessible. |
| After opening the route | cathedral and Site of Grace available. |
| Before using the Dark Moon Ring | Ranni’s final interaction is incomplete. |
| After using the ring | Dark Moon Greatsword obtained and Ranni’s quest reaches its conclusion. |
Is the Cathedral of Manus Celes the same place as the Moonlight Altar?
No. The cathedral is one named location on the Moonlight Altar. The altar is the wider plateau containing several other ruins, towers, an Evergaol and additional overworld encounters.
Can I enter the cathedral without completing Ranni’s quest?
Not through the intended route. The Moonlight Altar is reached through the sealed lift after Astel, and access depends on the progression of Ranni’s quest and the Dark Moon Ring.
Do I have to kill Glintstone Dragon Adula?
No. You can enter the cathedral, use the Site of Grace and complete Ranni’s final interaction without defeating Adula. Killing the dragon is required only for its own rewards.
Where is the Dark Moon Greatsword?
It is awarded by Ranni after you drop through the hole beneath the cathedral and use the Dark Moon Ring. It is not a chest item inside the church.
Is there a merchant in the cathedral?
No confirmed merchant or shop operates there. The location has a Site of Grace, fixed Starlight Shards, a story interaction and a boss encounter.
What is beneath the cathedral?
A small cavern containing Ranni’s doll and her slain Two Fingers. The area is a story chamber, not a full dungeon.
Does the Cathedral of Manus Metyr belong to the same area?
No. Manus Metyr is a separate Shadow of the Erdtree location in the Realm of Shadow. Its similar name and structure are relevant to lore comparison, but it is not part of the base-game Cathedral of Manus Celes.
