About this guide
Shadow of the Erdtree content. Major spoilers for the southern Gravesite Plain, Lamenter’s Gaol and several optional bosses.
Overview
Charo’s Hidden Grave is an optional sub-region in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. It lies on the southern edge of the Gravesite Plain, above the Cerulean Coast and immediately west of the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion. The area is recognisable by its vast field of crimson flowers, enormous clustered gravestones, spirit-haunted waterways and unusually dense concentration of death-related enemies.
The location is more than a single flower field. For location purposes, Charo’s Hidden Grave includes the open-world plateau and the attached dungeon, Lamenter’s Gaol. It should not be confused with the neighbouring Cerulean Coast, the Foot of the Jagged Peak, the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion or the lower Stone Coffin Fissure.
Boundaries and neighbouring areas
Charo’s Hidden Grave is a compact but visually broad plateau. Its northern and north-eastern approaches lead towards the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion and the Foot of the Jagged Peak. The western and southern views look across the Cerulean Coast, although the coast itself is a separate sub-region.
This distinction matters because several nearby features can be seen from the grave but are not part of it:
The grave’s most important visual boundary is the transition from the blue coastal flowers to the red flowers of the plateau. The two areas form a connected southern landscape, but their Sites of Grace, enemies, item tables and boss encounters should be recorded separately.

Geography and atmosphere
Charo’s Hidden Grave is a high, open burial ground covered in crimson lilies and pale spiritgrave growth. Large piles of gravestones interrupt the otherwise open terrain. Some are arranged like natural rock formations, while others create cover around enemy encounters and the Tibia Mariner’s patrol route.
The area’s colours are deliberate. The blue of the Cerulean Coast and the red of Charo’s Hidden Grave produce the violet association connected with Ghostflame. This is also reflected in the item descriptions for Ghostflame Bloom and Grave Violet, which describe these plants as related gravesite flowers.
Environmental resources
The most characteristic harvestable resource is Ghostflame Bloom, which grows in the grave fields. The area also contains scattered Grave Keeper’s Brainpan, a crafting material associated specifically with Charo’s Hidden Grave. The material’s description identifies the old grave keepers as boatsmen who continued to summon the dead after their deaths.
Named environmental features
The Spiritspring is useful for reaching elevated routes and platforms. It is not a Site of Grace, dungeon entrance or separate named sub-region.
---
The plateau contains several distinct environmental pockets
- 01The central crimson flower field, where the Site of Grace and many of the area’s ordinary enemies are found.
- 02The western cliff route, where the Furnace Golem can be fought from elevated ground.
- 03The northern and north-eastern grave fields, including the Death Rite Bird’s arena and the raised route to the Rings of Spectral Light.
- 04The river and waterfall area, patrolled by the Tibia Mariner.
- 05The entrance and gaol approach, leading towards Lamenter’s Gaol.
Access and recommended route
Charo’s Hidden Grave is not reachable from the Cerulean Coast by simply riding uphill. The intended route comes from the Dragon Communion side of the Gravesite Plain.
Route from the Gravesite Plain
The Dragon’s Pit and Ancient Dragon-Man are therefore progression gates for this part of the map. The Grand Altar itself has its own NPC and rewards, but those belong to that neighbouring location rather than to Charo’s Hidden Grave. The route from the altar across the corpse is documented as the direct approach to the grave.
Suggested first exploration route
For a first visit, activate the Charo’s Hidden Grave Site of Grace immediately, then explore in this order:
This route reduces the chance of fighting the Death Rite Bird while carrying a large collection of unspent runes. It also allows the Furnace Golem to be approached from a safer position.

- 08Follow the route west-south-west to arrive at Charo’s Hidden Grave.
Suggested first exploration route
- 01Sweep the central flower field for harvestables and minor loot.
- 02Visit the western side and assess the Furnace Golem from above.
- 03Follow the river towards the Tibia Mariner.
- 04Return to the Grace and take the raised eastern route towards the Death Rite Bird.

- 06Enter Lamenter’s Gaol after clearing the open-world area.
Sites of Grace and facilities
Charo’s Hidden Grave has two Sites of Grace:
There are no merchants, smithing tables, churches, map pillars or upgrade facilities inside the sub-region. The Dragon Communion Priestess is found at the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion, outside the boundary of Charo’s Hidden Grave. The altar offers its own interactions and possible rewards, but it should not be counted as a service within the grave itself.

Residents, NPCs and factions
No ordinary NPC residents or quest-giving characters are confirmed within Charo’s Hidden Grave. This makes it different from the nearby Grand Altar, where the Dragon Communion Priestess is present.
The area’s closest thing to a historical population is the group referred to as the grave keepers. These are not living NPCs. Their presence is represented through the Tibia Mariner, the Grave Keeper’s Brainpan, Tibia’s Cookbook, Call of Tibia and the death-related landscape.
Named characters and groups
The Tibia Mariner’s background is especially relevant. The Mariner encountered here patrols a river among crimson flowers, teleports around the area and summons a Royal Revenant and powerful skeletons when pressured.

Enemies and bosses
Death Rite Bird
The Death Rite Bird is the principal open-world boss of Charo’s Hidden Grave. It appears north of the Site of Grace and is surrounded by Gravebirds. Unlike some Death Rite Bird encounters, this one is reported to appear regardless of the time of day. Its reward is the Ash of War: Ghostflame Call.
The fight is dangerous because the boss combines physical attacks with Ghostflame and frostbite effects. It also uses aerial attacks, spectral projectiles, explosions and a grab-like attack. Holy damage is particularly useful against this type of undead enemy, and clearing nearby Gravebirds first makes the arena considerably easier to manage.
Practical approach
Tibia Mariner
The Tibia Mariner is found beside the quiet river in the lower portion of the grave. It can teleport up a waterfall and summon a Royal Revenant. As the fight progresses, it retreats towards a large mass of gravestones and summons stronger skeletons.
This encounter is less about a single confined arena and more about controlling the space around the boss. The Mariner’s summons can make the fight difficult if the player chases the boss without first clearing the immediate area.
Practical approach
The Tibia Mariner’s presence also reinforces the connection between Charo’s Hidden Grave and the old grave keepers, described as boatsmen who summon the dead.
Furnace Golem
An armoured Furnace Golem stands on the western cliffs. It is an unmarked major encounter rather than the region’s named dungeon boss. The golem cannot be defeated reliably through ordinary attacks against its legs. The intended method is to reach high ground and throw Hefty Fire Pots or Hefty Furnace Pots into its furnace basket. Its reward is the Glovewort Crystal Tear.
The western cliff terrain is important because it provides the elevation needed for the pot-throwing strategy. Prepare the required pots before beginning the fight, and avoid wasting resources from ground level where the golem’s attacks are difficult to punish.
Golden Hippopotamus
A Golden Hippopotamus is also listed among the area’s unmarked major encounters. It rewards a Scadutree Fragment and should be treated as a separate encounter from the Furnace Golem and the two named bosses.
The fragment is especially useful if Charo’s Hidden Grave is being explored early in a DLC playthrough, since Scadutree Blessing upgrades improve survivability and damage throughout the Realm of Shadow.
Lamenter
The Lamenter is the boss of Lamenter’s Gaol, the dungeon attached to Charo’s Hidden Grave. It drops the Lamenter’s Mask. The boss uses disappearance, clones and a distinctive transformation-related moveset, so the fight is more controlled by identifying the real target than by ordinary damage racing.
Enemy directory
The following named enemy types are associated with the open-world sub-region or its attached dungeon:
The final entry is particularly associated with Lamenter’s Gaol. A Jar Innards enemy guards the room containing the Chilling Perfume Bottle.

Items and collectibles
Major rewards
The Rings of Spectral Light is one of the area’s most distinctive rewards. It is found on top of the arch leading from the Site of Grace towards the Death Rite Bird. The route goes east from the Grace and up to an altar surrounded by Gravebirds. The sorcery creates six spectral rings, deals magic damage and applies frostbite.
The Ash of War: Ghostflame Call can be applied to compatible infusable swords and spears. It creates a Ghostflame orb, with light and strong follow-ups producing different ground-burning or explosive effects.
Other loot and materials
Some entries are fixed pickups, some are boss rewards and some are harvestable or scattered materials. Do not treat the crafting materials as unique one-time rewards. Ghostflame Bloom and Grave Keeper’s Brainpan can be collected while exploring the terrain, whereas the Ash of War, Scadutree Fragment and Glovewort Crystal Tear are tied to specific encounters.

Lamenter’s Gaol
Lamenter’s Gaol is the principal enclosed dungeon within Charo’s Hidden Grave. It has its own Site of Grace and should be listed as a child area rather than merged into the open-world encounter table.
The dungeon contains locked doors, keys, frozen floors, ladders, Jar Innards and the Lamenter boss. The Chilling Perfume Bottle is found after opening the first locked door with the Upper Gaol Key, descending the first ladder and entering the frozen-floor room. A Jar Innards enemy emerges from the room to the right, where the bottle is located.
Lamenter’s Gaol directory
The gaol’s atmosphere contrasts with the open flower fields. The outside area is broad and exposed, while the dungeon compresses the same death-related imagery into locked chambers, frozen surfaces and hostile jar creatures.

Lore
Charo’s Hidden Grave is one of the clearest DLC locations for studying the world’s older death traditions. Its item descriptions repeatedly connect the region to grave keepers, Tibia Mariners, Ghostflame and the burial of the dead.
The Tibia’s Cookbook describes the mariners as the oldest grave keepers. The Grave Keeper’s Brainpan adds that these grave keepers were boatsmen who continued to summon the dead after withering away. Call of Tibia uses a grave keeper’s skull to summon a spirit, turning the historical description into a gameplay mechanic.
The region is also tied to Ghostflame. Ghostflame is a cold-burning fire associated with spirits, death sorceries and the Deathbirds. The Death Rite Bird, Ghostflame Bloom, Rings of Spectral Light and Ghostflame Call all place Charo’s Hidden Grave within that older, pre-Erdtree death tradition.
The name “Charo” is not explained directly by an NPC within the location. The game establishes the grave’s importance through environmental design and item descriptions rather than a clear biography of Charo. Claims that Charo was a specific dragon, ruler or named historical figure remain interpretation rather than confirmed in-game fact.
---
Progression and missability
Charo’s Hidden Grave is optional. It is not required to complete the main route through Shadow of the Erdtree, but access to it is gated behind the route through Dragon’s Pit and the Ancient Dragon-Man.
No ordinary NPC questline is confirmed to begin inside Charo’s Hidden Grave. The Dragon Communion Priestess and the wider Igon, Ancient Dragon-Man and Jagged Peak material should be handled as neighbouring or connected content, not as residents of the grave.
---
Practical hazards and secrets
Gravebirds around the raised arch
The route to Rings of Spectral Light is not a free pickup. Gravebirds surround the raised altar, and they can attack while the player is trying to collect the spell. Clear the platform first, or collect the item and immediately retreat.
Death Rite Bird’s Ghostflame
The Death Rite Bird’s flames inflict frostbite and can remain dangerous after the initial attack. Avoid rolling blindly through the black or blue fire. Holy damage is more reliable than ordinary physical damage against this undead boss.
Tibia Mariner’s summons
The Mariner’s teleporting behaviour can pull the fight away from its starting position. Watch the surrounding gravestones and waterfall rather than focusing exclusively on the boss’s health bar.
Furnace Golem preparation
The western Furnace Golem is designed around pot throwing from high ground. Bring suitable Hefty Pots before beginning the encounter. Conventional melee attacks are not the intended solution for this armoured variant.
Lamenter’s Gaol navigation
The gaol’s locked doors and ladders make it easy to overlook side rooms. Search each newly opened section before moving deeper, especially rooms reached from frozen floors and ladder landings.
