Jagged Peak

Jagged Peak is a dangerous volcanic mountain in the Realm of Shadow, introduced in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • Jagged Peak is an optional sub-region of the Gravesite Plain, not a base-game location and not part of Crumbling Farum Azula.
  • The only practical route into the mountain begins at Dragon’s Pit, reached from the Pillar Path south of Castle Ensis.
  • The lower area contains the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion, a major service point for dragon hearts and Bayle’s special rewards.
  • The climb contains two Jagged Peak Drake encounters and the optional but highly relevant boss Ancient Dragon Senessax.
  • Igon’s quest should be advanced before fighting Bayle if you want his summon sign, his equipment and his concluding dialogue.
  • After defeating Bayle, return to the Grand Altar and the places where Igon and the Priestess were found. Their rewards depend on quest progression and, in the Priestess’s case, on choices made during her quest.

About this guide

Shadow of the Erdtree guide. Major spoilers for Jagged Peak, Bayle the Dread, Igon and the Dragon Communion Priestess.

Overview

Jagged Peak is an optional dragon-hunting route in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. It is not simply the mountain visible from the Southern Shore. The name properly refers to the climb from the mountain’s lower slopes to Bayle’s summit, while the connected approach includes Dragon’s Pit, Dragon’s Pit Terminus, the Foot of the Jagged Peak, the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion and the route towards Charo’s Hidden Grave.

The mountain is one of the Realm of Shadow’s most strongly themed areas. Its geography is almost entirely vertical, its weather becomes increasingly hostile as you climb, and its story is tied to the ancient conflict between Bayle the Dread and Dragonlord Placidusax. The main reward is not merely Bayle’s Heart, but the conclusion of two connected character stories: Drake Warrior Igon and the Dragon Communion Priestess.

Boundary note: the Finger Ruins of Rhia and Charo’s Hidden Grave are neighbouring locations rather than internal subareas of Jagged Peak. The route around the Finger Ruins is nevertheless part of the practical approach to the lower mountain.

Reaching Dragon’s Pit

The usual approach begins at the Castle Front Site of Grace, south of Castle Ensis. Follow the Pillar Path southwards. The road is marked by ancient dragon statues and eventually leads towards Dragon’s Pit.

You may encounter Igon outside the dungeon during this approach. Speak to him and exhaust his dialogue. This is an important early step in his quest.

Dragon’s Pit route

Dragon’s Pit contains skeletal beastmen, ritual imagery, a Magma Wyrm encounter and the Ancient Dragon-Man boss. The dungeon awards the Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana, a weapon especially suited to the dragon encounters that follow. The Ancient Dragon-Man is also the final test before the route into the Jagged Peak area.

Dragon’s Pit route

  1. 01
Start from Castle Front or another Site of Grace on the Pillar Path.
  2. 02
Travel south along the road lined with dragon imagery.
  3. 03
Find Igon on the roadside and speak with him.
  4. 04
    Enter Dragon’s Pit.
  5. 05
Explore the cave and defeat or bypass its lesser enemies.
  6. 06
    Defeat the Ancient Dragon-Man.
  7. 07
Continue through the lower passage to Dragon’s Pit Terminus.

From Dragon’s Pit Terminus to the Foot of the Jagged Peak

Exit through Dragon’s Pit Terminus and enter the lower mountain region. A Jagged Peak Drake can be found sleeping in the open area. You do not have to defeat it immediately, but fighting it is a useful way to collect a Dragon Heart and become familiar with the drake moveset before the later encounters.

The lower route branches. One branch leads towards the Grand Altar and Charo’s Hidden Grave. The other continues into the mountain. The dead drake is the most reliable visual reference point.

From the clearing

  1. 01
Take the northern path beneath the molten-looking rock arch.
  2. 02
Continue along the trail as it bends around the Finger Ruins of Rhia.
  3. 03
Avoid or defeat the drakes in the open approach.
  4. 04
Use the Spiritspring to reach the raised bridge.
  5. 05
Cross the bridge to the Foot of the Jagged Peak Site of Grace.
  6. 06
Visit the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion before beginning the main ascent.

Suggested first exploration route

For a first visit, the following order avoids most backtracking:

---

Suggested first exploration route: steps

  1. 01
    Complete Dragon’s Pit.
  2. 02
Speak to the Dragon Communion Priestess at the Grand Altar.
  3. 03
Speak to Igon again when the quest route presents him.
  4. 04
    Explore the lower drake clearing.
  5. 05
Defeat the first Jagged Peak Drake if convenient.
  6. 06
    Reach Jagged Peak Mountainside.
  7. 07
Explore around the site for crafting materials and the nearby cookbook.
  8. 08
    Attempt Ancient Dragon Senessax.
  9. 09
    Continue to Jagged Peak Summit.
  10. 10
Before entering Bayle’s arena, check that Igon’s quest has been advanced and his summon is available.
  11. 11
    Defeat Bayle.
  12. 12
Return to the Grand Altar and Igon’s last location to collect quest rewards.
  13. 13
Use Bayle’s Heart at the Grand Altar.

Dragon’s Pit

The first checkpoint inside the gateway dungeon. It is useful for returning to the Ancient Dragon-Man’s arena and for making repeated attempts at the dungeon boss.

Dragon’s Pit Terminus

Unlocked after defeating the Ancient Dragon-Man. This is the direct launch point into the Foot of the Jagged Peak.

Grand Altar of Dragon Communion

This is the principal lower-area checkpoint and the main service location. The Dragon Communion Priestess is found here, and the altar is used to exchange Dragon Hearts and the Heart of Bayle for Dragon Communion powers.

Foot of the Jagged Peak

This Site of Grace sits near the lower mountain route. It is the best starting point for exploring the drake clearing, the Altar and the ascent.

Jagged Peak Mountainside

This checkpoint is reached after the route past Ancient Dragon Senessax’s arena. It is the main midpoint of the climb and a good place to prepare before exploring the upper slopes.

Jagged Peak Summit

This is the final checkpoint before Bayle’s arena. The path from here leads into the summit and the boss encounter.

Rest of the Dread Dragon

This Site of Grace becomes available after Bayle’s defeat. Its name reflects the change in the area after the Dread Dragon is finally slain.

---

Igon

Igon is a broken drake warrior obsessed with Bayle. His quest is one of the main reasons to explore Jagged Peak rather than simply running to the summit.

His appearances are associated with the route to the mountain and the later approach to Bayle. Speak to him whenever you find him and exhaust his dialogue. After advancing the quest, he gives Igon’s Furled Finger, which enables his summon sign inside Bayle’s arena.

Igon quest checklist

Igon’s summon sign is inside Bayle’s arena rather than outside the fog entrance. If it does not appear, check whether his quest has been advanced far enough and whether you have received his Furled Finger. The sign may not be visible immediately on a first attempt until the player has entered far enough into the arena.

Dragon Communion Priestess

The Priestess resides at the Grand Altar. She explains the Dragon Communion tradition and the ancient conflict between Bayle and Placidusax. She also provides a blessing during her quest.

Her quest includes progression conditions that can affect the final rewards. The Priestess’s rewards can resolve into different items, including Ancient Dragon Florissax or the Priestess Heart and Flowerstone Gavel, depending on the player’s choices and quest outcome.

Character directory

The Ancient Dragon-Man is a boss and former Dragon Communion warrior rather than a normal resident. Bayle is the summit boss. Senessax is a wandering or stationed field boss on the upper route.

---

Jagged Peak is the clearest DLC location for understanding Dragon Communion’s origin.

Dragon Communion involves consuming the hearts of dragons or drakes in order to gain their power. The practice originated in the conflict between Bayle and Dragonlord Placidusax. Bayle’s rebellion left both dragons grievously wounded, and Placidusax’s followers established the hunting of Bayle and his drake descendants as a form of punishment and ritual.

This also explains why the area contains both drakes and dragon hunters. The mountain is not merely Bayle’s lair. It is a pilgrimage route, a testing ground and the remains of a religious war.

Character directory

The Grand Altar therefore has two roles

  1. 01
It is a functional Dragon Communion altar.
  2. 02
It is a monument to the old dragon order and its continuing campaign against Bayle.

Ancient Dragon-Man

Location: Dragon’s Pit Status: Dungeon boss Reward: Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana and associated boss rewards

The Ancient Dragon-Man blocks the route into the mountain. His fight is comparatively straightforward once his attacks are recognised, but the arena and the preceding plunge can make the encounter feel more dangerous than it is.

The Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana is particularly appropriate for this route. Its existence also reinforces that Dragon’s Pit was a ritual test for warriors who intended to challenge Bayle.

Jagged Peak Drake

There are two named Jagged Peak Drake encounters associated with the approach and ascent:

The upper encounter can be approached cautiously. The drakes may damage one another, allowing a player to wait for an opening, although the fight can become chaotic once the player is detected. The drakes drop Dragon Hearts and drake-related materials.

Ancient Dragon Senessax

Senessax occupies the route between the lower and upper mountain. The player can attempt to defeat the boss or run past the arena towards Jagged Peak Mountainside.

The fight is made more difficult by the open terrain, lightning attacks and the dragon’s large area coverage. Mounted movement can help with repositioning, but staying too close beneath the dragon can make its body and lightning attacks difficult to read.

Senessax is optional for reaching Bayle. It is not a progression gate.

A practical approach is

  1. 01
Enter the arena and trigger the encounter.
  2. 02
Decide whether you are committed to the fight.
  3. 03
If attempting the boss, stay mobile and avoid lingering directly under the dragon.
  4. 04
If bypassing it, ride along the outer edge and continue towards the northern slope.
  5. 05
Activate Jagged Peak Mountainside as soon as possible.

Bayle the Dread

Bayle is the main boss of Jagged Peak and the end point of Igon’s story. He is fought in a large summit arena, where his attacks combine physical damage, fire and lightning.

Bayle is especially vulnerable to piercing damage, Dragon Communion Grease and Igon’s Harpoons.

Bayle preparation checklist

Bayle drops the Heart of Bayle, not a conventional Remembrance. The Heart cannot be exchanged with Finger Reader Enia. It must be taken to the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion, where it can be exchanged for Bayle’s Flame Lightning or Bayle’s Tyranny.

---

The following are the principal named items associated with the Jagged Peak route.

Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana

Found through the Dragon’s Pit sequence after defeating the Ancient Dragon-Man. It is one of the most thematically suitable weapons for the area and can be used against the later dragons.

Dragon Hearts

The Jagged Peak Drakes provide Dragon Hearts. These can be exchanged at the Grand Altar for Dragon Communion incantations.

Igon’s Cookbook [1]

Found in the lower Grand Altar area, in a ruined watchtower near the altar. It expands the crafting repertoire associated with Dragon Communion.

Igon’s Cookbook [2]

Found on a corpse at the end of the cliffs east of Jagged Peak Mountainside. It unlocks the recipe for Dragon Communion Flesh, which requires Rada Fruit, Lump of Flesh, Sharp Gravel Stone and Dragon’s Calorbloom.

Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone

A notable high-value upgrade material associated with the mountain route and the Senessax section.

Rock Heart

The Rock Heart is associated with the dragon transformation and Dragon Communion material found during the wider Jagged Peak and Dragon Communion exploration. Its acquisition has a progression condition involving the Domain of Dragons painting in Shadow Keep, so it is not simply obtained by climbing directly to Bayle.

Heart of Bayle

Dropped by Bayle. Take it to the Grand Altar and exchange it for one of Bayle’s two incantations:

Both are high-Arcane Dragon Communion incantations.

Heart of Bayle

Heart of Bayle
RewardUse
Bayle’s Flame LightningSummons Bayle’s arm to strike with flame lightning
Bayle’s TyrannySummons Bayle’s head to unleash an explosive flame-lightning attack

Named item directory

Some of these are quest rewards or altar exchanges rather than items lying directly on the mountain. They are included because they are part of the Jagged Peak and Dragon Communion progression.

Named item directory

1. Complete the gateway

Explore Dragon’s Pit thoroughly before leaving. The dungeon is relatively compact, but its forked route includes a Magma Wyrm and the Ancient Dragon-Man. Defeat the boss and continue to Dragon’s Pit Terminus.

2. Visit the lower mountain

At the Foot of the Jagged Peak, activate the Site of Grace and locate the dead drake. Visit the Grand Altar before beginning the climb.

Speak to the Priestess, then explore the nearby watchtower and the drake corpse. The corpse is also your route towards Charo’s Hidden Grave, which is a separate area and not required for Bayle.

3. Advance Igon’s quest

Do not treat Igon as a one-off roadside NPC. Speak to him at each available stage and exhaust his dialogue. If you ignore the quest, you may still fight Bayle, but you can miss Igon’s summon and his later rewards.

4. Climb through the drake encounters

Move north and use the Spiritsprings to gain height. The mountain’s paths often loop around rather than pointing directly at the summit. When you reach the fighting drakes, either engage them or use their combat to your advantage.

5. Decide what to do about Senessax

Senessax is optional. If your build is not ready, ride through the arena, follow the northern slope and activate Jagged Peak Mountainside. You can return later.

6. Search the Mountainside area

Before continuing, check the cliffs and side paths around Jagged Peak Mountainside. The upper cookbook is easy to miss because it is not on the main ascent.

7. Reach Jagged Peak Summit

Use the upper Spiritsprings and the tunnel route. The final ascent contains electric hazards and narrow ledges. Keep the camera angled towards the next rock shelf rather than simply following the apparent highest point.

8. Prepare for Bayle

At the summit, check for Igon’s summon sign after entering the arena far enough. If it is absent, leave and verify that his quest has been advanced and that you possess Igon’s Furled Finger.

9. Defeat Bayle

Use piercing damage where possible, avoid standing directly in front of his head for extended periods and be ready for his large flame-lightning attacks. Igon’s presence is more than cosmetic. His summon is tied directly to the quest and uses his specialised harpoons.

10. Complete the aftermath

---

After Bayle dies

  1. 01
Activate Rest of the Dread Dragon.
  2. 02
    Return to Igon’s final location.
  3. 03
    Collect his rewards.
  4. 04
    Return to the Grand Altar.
  5. 05
Speak with the Priestess and resolve her quest.
  6. 06
Exchange the Heart of Bayle for one of the two Bayle incantations.

The mountain has no conventional map fragment of its own

The area is revealed through the Southern Shore map information rather than a separate Jagged Peak map fragment. This is why players can reach the mountain while still feeling as though the upper routes are undocumented. The absence of a local map is intentional in practical terms: the mountain is navigated through landmarks, Spiritsprings and Sites of Grace.

The dead drake is a navigation marker

When lost in the lower area, look for the huge corpse. It points towards the Grand Altar and the route to Charo’s Hidden Grave.

Falling rocks and narrow jumps

Several sections involve moving through tunnels while avoiding falling rocks or crossing gaps with Torrent. Do not assume every apparently high ledge is accessible from ground level. The correct route often requires approaching from a lower side path and using a Spiritspring.

Electric hazards

The upper mountain contains dangerous electric enemies and dragon attacks. The cramped tunnels near the summit are especially awkward for large weapons and slow spell casts.

Senessax does not have to be killed

This is worth emphasising. The boss is positioned to intimidate the player, but the route continues around the arena. Activate the next Site of Grace before deciding whether to return for the fight.

---

Jagged Peak is the physical expression of the conflict between Bayle and Placidusax.

Bayle was a drake who turned against the Dragonlord. Their battle ended without a clean victory, leaving both grievously wounded. Bayle fled to the Jagged Peak, where he became the object of a long campaign of revenge. The ancient dragons responded by establishing Dragon Communion and directing warriors towards the slaughter of Bayle’s descendants.

The mountain’s drakes are therefore not random monsters. They are the descendants of the creature whose rebellion reshaped dragon history. The Dragon Communion Priestess preserves the older purpose of the ritual, while Igon represents the mortal warrior who has turned the hunt into personal obsession.

Bayle’s body also carries evidence of the old battle. Parts of Placidusax’s lost heads remain attached to Bayle, suggesting that the conflict was physically and symbolically unresolved even after Bayle escaped to the Realm of Shadow.

The Grand Altar’s location inside the corpse of a massive drake adds another layer of symbolism. Dragon Communion requires the consumption of dragon hearts, and here the altar is surrounded by the remains of the creatures that made the ritual possible.

Is Jagged Peak required to finish Shadow of the Erdtree?

No. Jagged Peak, Bayle and the connected Dragon Communion quests are optional.

Is Dragon’s Pit part of Jagged Peak?

No. Dragon’s Pit is a separate dungeon on the Gravesite Plain, but it is the principal gateway to the Jagged Peak route.

Can I reach Bayle without killing Ancient Dragon Senessax?

Yes. Senessax is optional and can be bypassed.

Can I summon Igon without doing his quest?

You need to advance his quest far enough to receive Igon’s Furled Finger. The summon sign appears inside Bayle’s arena rather than at the entrance.

What should I do with Bayle’s Heart?

Take it to the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion. It can be exchanged for Bayle’s Flame Lightning or Bayle’s Tyranny. It cannot be exchanged at the Roundtable Hold for a normal Remembrance reward.

Does defeating Bayle change the area?

Yes. The Rest of the Dread Dragon Site of Grace becomes available, and several quest outcomes and rewards can be collected afterwards.
