About this guide

Scope: Base game Elden Ring, including the complete Cliffbottom Catacombs dungeon and its fixed loot, enemies and boss. Nearby Liurnia locations are mentioned only as routes or landmarks, not treated as part of the catacombs.

Overview

Cliffbottom Catacombs is an optional minor dungeon built into the eastern cliffs of Liurnia of the Lakes. It is one of the region’s more substantial catacombs, combining narrow corridors, ambushes, pressure-plate traps, ladders, a locked boss door and several large Omen enemies in a vertically arranged layout. Its principal reward is the Kaiden Sellsword Ashes, obtained from the dungeon boss, but the dungeon also contains the Scythe, Nox Mirrorhelm, Page Ashes, Prattling Pate “Wonderful”, a Rune Arc and a useful collection of Grave Glovewort.

The dungeon has no questline, merchant, permanent NPC or alternate story state attached to it. Its entrance, Site of Grace, internal rooms, enemies, lever and boss arena all belong to the same named location. The nearby overworld is eastern Liurnia, including the road and cliffs around the Highway Lookout Tower, but those places are not subareas of Cliffbottom Catacombs.

Boundaries and hierarchy

Cliffbottom Catacombs is a single named dungeon rather than a broad region containing multiple named locations. The entrance opens directly into the catacombs, and the internal areas are functional sections of the same dungeon rather than separately named subareas.

For navigation purposes, it is useful to divide the dungeon into these descriptive sections:

These are descriptive labels only. They should not be confused with canonical location names.

Named directory: places within scope

No additional officially named businesses, buildings, roads, settlements or internal subareas are verified within the catacombs themselves.

Location and access

The entrance is on the eastern side of Liurnia, built into the face of a cliff below the higher ground around the Highway Lookout Tower. Guides commonly describe reaching it by travelling south-east from the Highway Lookout Tower area and following the cliffside until the stone doorway becomes visible.

The catacombs are not sealed by a fog wall or overworld puzzle. Once inside, activate the Site of Grace before proceeding. The first lift descends to the main dungeon level. It is worth allowing the lift to travel back upwards after stepping off, since the exposed shaft and its side ledges contain loot, including an early Grave Glovewort [2] pickup.

Nearby connections

The catacombs do not connect physically to another dungeon or underground region. Its only meaningful external connection is the overworld entrance in eastern Liurnia.

These are approach landmarks, not dungeon subareas.

Residents, factions and ordinary enemies

Cliffbottom Catacombs has no friendly residents, merchants or named NPCs. The dungeon is occupied by hostile Imps and Omen, with the Erdtree Burial Watchdog serving as its boss.

The Imps are particularly dangerous in groups because the corridors give them opportunities to attack from behind, above or around corners. Several are positioned close to one another, so rushing after the first target can draw multiple enemies into the fight. Pulling them back into a wider corridor is usually safer than fighting in the room where they are first seen.

The Omen occupy the lower section and are much more durable than the dungeon’s Imps. Their large health pools and heavy attacks make them poor targets for prolonged close-range exchanges in confined spaces. The dungeon’s traps can be used against them, and ranged attacks are valuable if available.

Named directory: enemy types

The Omen encountered here are ordinary enemies rather than named NPCs or faction leaders. Their equipment can produce useful random drops, but those drops should be treated separately from the dungeon’s fixed loot.

Landmarks and facilities

Cliffbottom Catacombs Site of Grace

The Site of Grace is immediately inside the entrance. It serves as the dungeon’s checkpoint and allows the player to reset the catacombs after collecting loot or dying.

Lift shaft

The opening lift descends from the entrance level to the deeper dungeon. The shaft contains a side ledge with a Grave Glovewort pickup. To reach it, step or roll onto the ledge while the lift is moving, then continue down when safe.

Pressure-plate trap

The catacombs contain a corridor trap activated by stepping on a pressure plate. The trap fires magical projectiles down the passage. It can damage enemies as well as the player, making it useful for weakening or killing an Omen if the enemy is positioned correctly. The trap also creates a navigation hazard because entering the corridor without recognising the activation plate can result in repeated hits.

Lever chamber

A lever attached to a statue opens the large boss doors near the dungeon’s earlier section. The lever is not beside the boss arena. It is reached by taking the ladder up from the lower section, dealing with the enemy near the altar and then searching the adjacent chamber.

Summoning pool

The boss approach includes the usual catacomb summoning-pool arrangement. Its availability is separate from the ability to summon Spirit Ashes inside the boss arena.

Loot and collectibles

The fixed rewards below are the principal verified pickups associated with Cliffbottom Catacombs. Different guides present slightly different counts for some upgrade materials and crafting items, so the named equipment and major rewards are more reliable than any single third-party total.

Equipment and utility items

The Scythe is one of the most useful early fixed rewards in the dungeon. It is not a boss drop or merchant purchase. It lies on a corpse in a room guarded by several Imps, so clear the room before attempting to collect it. The weapon requires 14 Strength and 14 Dexterity, according to the item-location documentation.

The Nox Mirrorhelm is behind an Imp Statue seal. This room is optional and requires a Stonesword Key. It is easy to overlook because the main route does not require opening it.

Upgrade materials and crafting materials

The catacombs contain several Grave Glovewort pickups and at least one Ghost Glovewort [3]. These are fixed dungeon pickups, not random enemy drops. Grave Violet, Root Resin, Old Fang and Hefty Beast Bone are crafting-material pickups or drops associated with the dungeon’s enemies and corpses.

Comprehensive named item directory

Some sources list multiple copies of Grave Glovewort [2], Grave Glovewort [3], Root Resin and other materials. The exact quantities are not consistent across the supplied references, so this guide preserves the verified names without presenting an unsupported single total.

Walkthrough

1. Activate the Site of Grace

Enter the catacombs and activate Cliffbottom Catacombs. Descend using the lift. While it is moving, watch for the side ledge containing Grave Glovewort [2]. Do not force the jump if the camera angle is poor. You can return to the lift and try again.

At the bottom, proceed carefully through the first corridor. One enemy may appear to be moving away from you, while another waits around the corner. Deal with the ambusher first so that you are not attacked from behind while fighting the more visible enemy.

2. Clear the first Imp rooms

Continue through the corridors and look for the pressure plate in the floor. The plate activates the projectile trap farther along the passage. Avoid standing in its firing line unless you intend to use it against an enemy.

In the Imp-occupied room, pull enemies towards the doorway instead of fighting in the centre. This limits the angles from which they can surround you. Once the room is safe, collect the nearby Scythe and Grave Violet.

Search the surrounding corridors for additional Grave Glovewort and the Nox Mirrorhelm room. The latter is optional and requires one Stonesword Key. If you are conserving keys, leave it for later. It does not affect the main route or boss door.

3. Descend into the Omen section

The route then drops into a broader lower area containing Omen. This is the most dangerous ordinary-enemy section of the dungeon.

Avoid fighting several Omen at once. Use the doorway, stairs and corners to separate them. If you have a bow, crossbow or spell, you can pull one enemy at a time. The pressure-plate trap can also help with positioning, but do not activate it while standing in its line of fire.

Search both sides of the lower area. The dungeon places Grave Glovewort, Ghost Glovewort and other fixed pickups around the edges, while the larger enemies draw attention towards the centre.

4. Use the trap corridor

Move through the corridor containing the magical trap. The pressure plate can be activated from a safe angle, allowing the projectiles to strike an enemy farther down the passage. This is particularly useful against an Omen, although the timing is less forgiving if the enemy moves unpredictably.

Collect the Prattling Pate “Wonderful” and nearby materials before continuing. The Prattling Pate is not a quest item and does not unlock a service. It is a reusable communication item used to produce its named phrase.

5. Climb the ladder

After clearing the lower section, find the ladder leading upwards. Check the area before climbing because an enemy waits near the upper section.

At the top, approach the altar and collect the Page Ashes. Depending on the guide or version of the route being followed, this pickup may be described as being in a chest or at an altar-like stone structure. The important navigation point is that it is in the upper chamber before the lever, guarded by an Omen.

Continue into the adjacent chamber and pull the lever attached to the statue. This opens the large boss doors near the earlier part of the dungeon.

6. Return to the boss door

After activating the lever, return through the catacombs. You can either fight or run past surviving ordinary enemies, but be careful not to let Omen follow you into the boss approach. Once the doors are open, enter the arena and prepare for the Erdtree Burial Watchdog.

Boss: Erdtree Burial Watchdog

The Cliffbottom Catacombs version of the Erdtree Burial Watchdog uses a staff and has magical attacks in addition to the familiar heavy swings, jumps and ground slams. It is a different encounter from the Watchdogs found in other catacombs, although the general mechanical pattern is similar.

Practical strategy

The Watchdog can be intimidating because its statue-like movement is slow and abrupt, but its attacks are heavily telegraphed. The main danger comes from attacking during its recovery windows without accounting for the follow-up magic or landing shockwave.

Boss rewards

The Kaiden summon costs 88 FP and calls a northern mercenary spirit armed with a large blade. Its description emphasises the sellsword’s mounted-warrior heritage and war cry, which enhances its offensive presence.

Important attacks

Important attacks
NameDetails
Staff swingsClose-range attacks with broad coverage.
Leaping slamThe Watchdog rises into the air before crashing down. Roll away from the landing point rather than attacking during the ascent.
Magic projectile ringThe boss creates a ring of magical projectiles that home towards the player. Move sideways, roll through the projectiles or use the arena pillars as cover.
Fire breathThe multiple heads can produce a frontal fire attack. Do not remain directly in front of the boss when it begins the animation.

Practical strategy

  1. 01
Enter the arena and allow the boss to complete its opening movement before committing to an attack.
  2. 02
Stay to its side or behind it rather than directly in front.
  3. 03
When it rises for the slam, stop attacking and prepare to roll.
  4. 04
Use the pillars to block or interrupt the magic projectile pattern.
  5. 05
If using Spirit Ashes, summon early so the distraction is available before the boss begins chaining attacks.
  6. 06
Ranged characters should keep moving horizontally rather than retreating in a straight line.
  7. 07
Melee characters should favour short attacks after the boss finishes a swing or slam.

For a first complete clear

  1. 01
    Activate the Site of Grace.
  2. 02
Search the lift shaft for Grave Glovewort [2].
  3. 03
    Clear the first Imp corridors.
  4. 04
Collect the Scythe and nearby Grave Violet.
  5. 05
Use a Stonesword Key for the Nox Mirrorhelm room, if desired.
  6. 06
    Descend into the Omen section.
  7. 07
Collect the Ghost Glovewort, Grave Glovewort and Prattling Pate.
  8. 08
Use the pressure-plate trap against an Omen where practical.
  9. 09
    Climb the ladder.
  10. 10
    Take the Page Ashes.
  11. 11
    Pull the statue lever.
  12. 12
    Return to the boss doors.
  13. 13
    Defeat the Erdtree Burial Watchdog.
  14. 14
Collect the Kaiden Sellsword Ashes and spend the runes before taking unnecessary risks.

Hazards and secrets

Imp ambushes

Several Imps are positioned to punish players who run directly towards visible loot. Check ceilings, corners and side passages before collecting an item. A shield, guard counter or charged attack can help interrupt them, but fighting from a doorway is usually safer than standing in the room’s centre.

Omen pressure

The Omen are the dungeon’s main ordinary-enemy threat. Do not assume that reaching the lower area means the route is nearly complete. The lower rooms contain important pickups and the route to the ladder, but careless movement can attract multiple Omen at once.

Trap misuse

The magical trap is both a weapon and a hazard. Activate it from outside the projectile line, then retreat if the enemy survives. The trap does not make the corridor safe merely because it has fired once.

Stonesword Key room

The Nox Mirrorhelm room is the dungeon’s main optional secret. It is not required for progression and consumes one Stonesword Key. Players focused on the boss can leave it unopened and return later.

Lore

Cliffbottom Catacombs belong to Elden Ring’s wider network of burial dungeons built around underground roots. The description of Root Resin states that the roots of the Greattree were once linked to those of the Erdtree, and that this relationship is why catacombs were built around them. The dungeon’s layout, burial architecture and Erdtree Burial Watchdog therefore fit the broader funerary tradition represented across the Lands Between.

The Kaiden Sellsword reward is also thematically distinct from the dungeon’s burial setting. Kaiden mercenaries are associated with northern horse-riding peoples and large curved blades. The spirit ash is not evidence that a Kaiden soldier lived or died in Cliffbottom Catacombs. It is a reward left by the dungeon’s boss.

Progression and missability

No verified questline changes the contents of Cliffbottom Catacombs. The dungeon remains available through the base game, and no supplied source identifies a story event that removes its boss, loot or Site of Grace.

The following content is fixed rather than procedural:

Enemy drops from Imps and Omen may vary according to normal item-discovery rules and should not be confused with guaranteed dungeon rewards.
