About this guide
Scope: Elden Ring base game. Status: Researched guide. The dungeon is small and self-contained. No separate, named child-area is documented within the catacombs themselves, so this guide treats the entrance, internal chambers, boss room and immediate approach as one location. Spoiler warning: This guide identifies the dungeon boss, its rewards, the Deathroot chest and the relevant nearby landmarks.
Overview
Deathtouched Catacombs is an optional minor dungeon in northern Limgrave, built into the cliffs of Stormhill west of Saintsbridge. It is a short early-game catacomb occupied by reanimating Skeletons and guarded by a Black Knife Assassin. The dungeon is particularly worthwhile because it contains the Uchigatana, one of the most useful early katanas, and a Deathroot, which can later be offered to Gurranq, Beast Clergyman. Defeating the boss also awards the Assassin’s Crimson Dagger talisman.
The catacombs are not connected to Saintsbridge, Stormhill Shack or Warmaster’s Shack by an underground passage. Those are neighbouring overworld landmarks and approach points only. The dungeon has a single Site of Grace, a short lever-operated route and one boss encounter.
Geography and boundaries
Deathtouched Catacombs lies in the northern part of Limgrave, within the Stormhill area. Its entrance is built into a rock wall near the cliffs overlooking the route between Stormhill and Saintsbridge. The catacombs should be distinguished from the surrounding overworld:
The most direct boundary is therefore the dungeon entrance and loading transition. The exterior cliffs, nearby road, mounted knight and surrounding trees belong to Stormhill’s overworld rather than Deathtouched Catacombs proper.
Nearby but separate locations
The nearby locations are useful for navigation, but none is a subarea of the catacombs.

Access and approach routes
From Saintsbridge
This is the simplest route if the Site of Grace has already been discovered.
The entrance is west of Saintsbridge, although some route descriptions express the approach in relation to Warmaster’s Shack and describe travelling north before turning east towards the cliffs. These descriptions refer to different sections of the same overworld approach, not different entrances.
From Warmaster’s Shack
Warmaster’s Shack is a useful southern reference point. Travel north and then east towards the cliffs above the entrance. The descent to the entrance is safer on Torrent, particularly if approaching from the elevated ground. A mounted Godrick Knight patrols nearby, so avoid fighting it on the narrow cliff route unless you want the additional encounter.
Access requirements
There is no key, Stonesword Key or quest prerequisite for entering Deathtouched Catacombs. The dungeon is available as soon as the player can reach northern Limgrave.
---
From Saintsbridge
- 01Travel to the Saintsbridge Site of Grace.
- 02Follow the road and cliffs westwards.
- 03Look for the rocky slope and cliff face rather than expecting a large ruin or tower.
- 04Climb the rocks towards the entrance. Torrent can make the ascent and descent easier.
- 05Enter the doorway in the rock wall and activate the dungeon’s Site of Grace.
Internal layout
Deathtouched Catacombs is a compact linear dungeon with a short side route. The initial descent leads to the Site of Grace and then to a chamber containing:
The boss door is locked when first reached. The player must descend through the lower chambers, collect the weapon if desired and pull the lever. Returning to the upper chamber then opens the way to the Black Knife Assassin.
Internal subareas
No independently named child-area is established for the dungeon. For navigation, the following descriptive divisions are useful:
These are navigation labels rather than canonical location names.
---
Internal subareas
- 01Entrance descent and Site of Grace
- 02Sealed boss-door chamber
- 03Skeleton passages
- 04Uchigatana walkway
- 05Lever room
- 06Black Knife Assassin’s chamber
Residents, factions and ordinary enemies
Ordinary enemies directory
The dungeon’s ordinary inhabitants are Skeletons. Their equipment varies, with documented armaments including longbows, scimitars and Scripture Wooden Shields. Their possible drops correspond to those weapons and to common undead-related materials.
Skeleton resurrection mechanic
Skeletons do not always remain defeated after their health reaches zero. They collapse into scattered bones and begin to reassemble. Strike the remains while they are glowing or before they fully rise. If you do not, they return with their health restored.
This is not a requirement for moving through the dungeon, since the Skeletons can be outrun, but finishing them prevents attacks from behind and ensures that they release their normal rewards. Holy damage can help against undead, although the practical requirement is to hit the remains during the reanimation sequence.
Factions
No faction has a named base, representative or quest hub inside Deathtouched Catacombs. The Black Knife Assassin is the only named boss-associated enemy. The Skeletons are dungeon inhabitants rather than members of a separately identified local faction.
NPCs and visitors
No named friendly NPC is documented inside the catacombs. Some guides describe a ghost sitting outside the entrance. This is environmental scenery rather than a named NPC with dialogue or a questline, so it should not be confused with an interactable character.

Landmarks and facilities
Deathtouched Catacombs Site of Grace
The Site of Grace is near the start of the dungeon, after descending the entrance stairs. It provides the usual rest, levelling, flask management and fast-travel functions. Resting here does not remove the dungeon’s boss or permanently alter its layout.
Lever
The lever is in the lower section of the catacombs, beyond the Skeleton passages. Pulling it opens the sealed doors in the upper chamber and grants access to the boss.
Boss chamber
The far chamber contains the Black Knife Assassin. After the boss is defeated, a chest in the same chamber contains the Deathroot. The chamber is therefore both the end of the dungeon’s combat route and the location of its progression item.
Businesses and services
There are no shops, merchants, smiths, crafting stations, churches, purchasable properties or other businesses inside Deathtouched Catacombs.

Items and collectibles
Fixed rewards
The Uchigatana is the dungeon’s most notable non-boss item. The weapon is found on a corpse near the edge of an elevated walkway, reached through the side passages rather than by following the most direct route to the lever.
Materials
Documented gathering and enemy-drop materials associated with the dungeon include:
The exact material placement and enemy-drop tables are not identical categories. Grave Glovewort is fixed environmental loot, while several other materials are enemy drops or gathering items. Skeleton weapon drops are also dependent on the armament carried by the individual enemy.
Weapon directory
The Uchigatana is fixed loot, not a random Skeleton drop.
Talisman directory
The Assassin’s Crimson Dagger is a fixed boss reward from the Black Knife Assassin in this dungeon. It should not be confused with other Black Knife Assassin encounters elsewhere in the game.
Key-item directory
The Deathroot is fixed chest loot in the boss chamber. It is not obtained directly from the Black Knife Assassin’s corpse.

Fixed rewards
| Item | Location | Acquisition |
|---|---|---|
| Uchigatana | Corpse in the elevated walkway section | Loot the corpse after navigating through the side passages |
| Grave Glovewort [1] | Several points along the lower route | Gather from the catacomb floor |
| Assassin’s Crimson Dagger | Boss reward | Defeat the Black Knife Assassin |
| Deathroot | Chest in the boss chamber | Defeat the boss, then open the chest |

Complete walkthrough
1. Activate the Site of Grace
Enter the catacombs and descend the opening stairs. Activate the Deathtouched Catacombs Site of Grace before continuing. This gives you a convenient return point if the Skeletons or boss defeat you.
2. Inspect the sealed boss door
Continue down until you reach the small chamber with the sealed doors. The doors cannot be opened yet. Note their position, then take the stairs down into the lower catacombs.
3. Deal with the first Skeletons
The lower route contains Skeletons, some of which may be lying motionless on the floor. Approach cautiously and look for movement. After knocking one down, attack its glowing remains to prevent resurrection.
If you are only interested in opening the boss door, you can sprint through much of this section. However, killing the Skeletons permanently makes the return journey safer and allows you to collect their possible drops.
4. Take the side route for the Uchigatana
From the lower stairs, explore the side passages rather than immediately following the most direct route to the lever.
The weapon is fixed loot and does not require defeating the boss.
5. Pull the lever
Continue through the lower chambers until you reach the lever room. Clear or bypass the Skeletons, then pull the lever. A mechanism sound confirms that the previously sealed boss door has opened.
6. Return to the upper chamber
Retrace your route to the initial chamber. The door that was previously closed is now open. Enter and prepare for the Black Knife Assassin.
7. Defeat the Black Knife Assassin
The Black Knife Assassin is agile but relatively vulnerable to pressure. The boss can be staggered, and spirit summons can draw its attention long enough for you to land attacks. Physical damage is effective, while the boss is also reported to have limited protection against magic, fire and lightning.
On defeat, the Black Knife Assassin gives the Assassin’s Crimson Dagger and the boss encounter does not respawn in the normal game cycle. The encounter is optional and is separate from other Black Knife Assassin battles in Limgrave and beyond.
8. Open the chest
After the fight, open the chest in the boss chamber to obtain Deathroot. This is the final major collection step in the dungeon.
Deathroot is connected to Gurranq, Beast Clergyman, at Bestial Sanctum. Deathtouched Catacombs is one of the early locations where the player can begin collecting it for that wider progression.
---
4. Take the side route for the Uchigatana: A practical sequence is
- 01Descend from the sealed-door chamber.
- 02Search beneath and around the stairs for a Grave Glovewort.
- 03Enter the side passage.
- 04Continue into the adjoining chamber.
- 05Follow the passage leading towards the elevated walkway.
- 06Loot the corpse at the edge of the walkway to obtain the Uchigatana.
- 07Drop down into the lower section and continue towards the lever.
Boss guide: Black Knife Assassin
Encounter profile
The Black Knife Assassin is a humanoid boss rather than a large monster. Its speed and low profile can make it difficult to track in the dark room, particularly for slow weapons or inexperienced players. It is, however, susceptible to stagger pressure and can be distracted by spirit summons.
Recommended approach
For melee characters, stay close enough to punish the end of the Assassin’s attack strings, but do not chase blindly when it disengages. Faster weapons such as the Uchigatana are well suited to the fight, although the weapon is found earlier in the dungeon and is not required to win.
For ranged or spellcasting characters, create distance only when the chamber gives you a clear line of sight. Summons are especially useful because the boss has limited area-of-effect pressure compared with larger dungeon bosses.

| Property | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Deathtouched Catacombs boss chamber |
| Type | Optional dungeon boss |
| Reward | Assassin’s Crimson Dagger |
| Additional reward | Deathroot from the post-boss chest |
| Runes | 1,600, according to the location encounter table |

Progression and missable content
Deathtouched Catacombs does not have a documented quest-state branch, NPC relocation sequence or alternate version in the base game. Its main progression is mechanical:
The Uchigatana can be collected before the boss, and the boss can be defeated without collecting it. The Deathroot chest is available after the boss encounter. No cited source identifies a missability trigger that permanently removes these rewards during a normal playthrough.
Deathroot progression
The Deathroot is more important outside the dungeon than within it. It can be taken to Gurranq at Bestial Sanctum, where Deathroot exchanges form part of his reward progression. Deathtouched Catacombs is therefore relevant to the Beast Clergyman’s content even though Gurranq is not present in the catacombs.
---
Progression and missable content: steps
- 01Enter the dungeon.
- 02Reach the locked boss door.
- 03Pull the lever.
- 04Defeat the Black Knife Assassin.
- 05Loot the Assassin’s Crimson Dagger.
- 06Open the chest for Deathroot.
Hazards and practical advice
Reanimating Skeletons
The principal hazard is not raw damage but attrition. A Skeleton that appears defeated can rise behind you, interrupt healing or attack while you are dealing with another enemy. Finish each Skeleton with a strike to its remains, or sprint decisively through the corridors.
Narrow passages
The side passages and stairs limit room for evasion. A shield, a weapon with a broad attack arc or a fast retreat towards an open chamber can be safer than repeatedly rolling in a corridor.
Boss-room visibility
The Black Knife Assassin’s dark arena makes target tracking harder than in an open field. Lock-on is useful, but release it if the camera becomes obstructed by the walls or if the boss moves behind you.
Recovery route
If you die after collecting the Uchigatana, you do not need to repeat the entire dungeon to reach the boss. The Site of Grace is close to the sealed-door chamber, and the lever route is short once the layout is familiar.

Lore and thematic significance
The catacombs’ name and inhabitants connect it to Elden Ring’s recurring imagery of death, burial and bodies that refuse to remain dead. Its Skeletons are not simply passive remains: they actively reassemble after being defeated, reinforcing the game’s distinction between ordinary death and the wider corruption surrounding Deathroot and Those Who Live in Death.
The Black Knife Assassin also links the dungeon thematically to the assassins responsible for the Night of the Black Knives. The boss’s presence is not accompanied by a dedicated dialogue scene or a local quest, so the connection is primarily thematic and through the enemy’s identity rather than through a direct narrative reveal at the site. The Deathroot chest provides the stronger mechanical link to the game’s broader death-related progression.
