About this guide
Scope: Base game Elden Ring, including the Weeping Peninsula as part of Limgrave. Spoiler warning: This guide covers the cave’s layout, enemies, loot and boss.
Overview
Earthbore Cave is a small optional cave on the northern edge of the Weeping Peninsula. It is best understood as a Weeping Peninsula location within the wider Limgrave region, rather than as a separate Limgrave cave or a location in the central Limgrave overworld. Some guides label it simply “Limgrave” because the Weeping Peninsula is commonly grouped under Limgrave for progression and map purposes.
The dungeon is short and mostly linear, but it contains two useful early-game lessons: not every apparent route is safe to walk across, and the final boss arena is reached by dropping through a deep shaft. Its reward, the Spelldrake Talisman, is particularly useful against magic damage, while the cave itself provides a small collection of consumables and crafting materials.
Geography and boundaries
Earthbore Cave is cut into the cliffs along the northern edge of the Weeping Peninsula. Its entrance is below the surrounding woodland and faces towards the northern coast. The cave is positioned between two useful landmarks:
The approach is easiest from the eastern side. From the Forest Lookout Tower, follow the terrain westwards and look for a narrow strip of land beside the cliffs. The ground slopes down towards the entrance. A nearby guiding candelabra can also direct explorers towards the cave, although it is not necessary to activate it to enter.
Earthbore Cave does not contain a settlement, surface buildings, shops or a connected route to another dungeon. Its boundary is the cave instance itself, beginning at the entrance and ending in the Runebear’s chamber. The Forest Lookout Tower and Demi-Human Forest Ruins are neighbouring overworld locations, not subareas of Earthbore Cave.
Location directory
The references to Forest Lookout Tower and Demi-Human Forest Ruins describe Earthbore Cave’s position, while Mistwood is mentioned only because ordinary Runebears also occur there. None of these neighbouring areas should be merged into the cave’s internal layout.

Location directory
Subareas and internal layout
Earthbore Cave has no separately named chambers or child locations in the base game. For practical navigation, it can be divided into four descriptive sections:
These are functional descriptions rather than canonical in-game names.
Entrance and Site of Grace
The Site of Grace is just inside the cave. Light is limited immediately beyond it, so a torch or lantern is strongly recommended, especially for a first visit. The Grace provides the usual rest, fast travel and preparation functions, but there are no special facilities attached to it.
Chest chamber
From the Site of Grace, move south-west towards the first chamber. A chest stands beyond a visibly weak or cracked section of floor. The area immediately in front of the chest collapses if stepped on.
You can reach the chest safely by moving around the edge of the weak flooring. Alternatively, dropping through it leads into the rat-infested chamber below. The chest contains three Pickled Turtle Neck items.
Rat tunnels
The cave’s upper passage continues through dark, narrow tunnels populated by Rats. The route eventually reaches the lower side of the collapsed-floor chamber. From there, a passage leads deeper into the cave, with further Rats and bodies carrying consumable loot.
The route is broadly linear. There are no puzzles, locked doors, lever mechanisms or branching quest paths.
Vertical descent
Near the end of the upper route is a deep shaft lined with ledges. Drop from ledge to ledge rather than jumping directly into the bottom. Once you descend, the return route is effectively closed until the boss is defeated. This is the cave’s most important progression point.
The shaft leads into a passage that opens into the Runebear’s chamber.

Access and suggested routes
From the Forest Lookout Tower
This is the most direct approach if you are already exploring the northern Weeping Peninsula.
From the Demi-Human Forest Ruins
If you are approaching from the west, use the Demi-Human Forest Ruins as a landmark and travel east along the northern edge of the peninsula. The cave entrance is below the elevated ground, so do not search only at the level of the surrounding forest.
Recommended exploration order

Checkpoints and facilities
There are no smithing tables, merchants, crafting stations, summoning pools or other permanent facilities specifically associated with the cave. The Site of Grace is the only named player facility within the location.
Facilities directory
No shop, service or purchase opportunity is associated with Earthbore Cave. The consumables found inside are fixed pickups or enemy-related drops, not goods sold by a resident merchant.
---
Residents, NPCs and factions
Earthbore Cave has no named NPC residents and no ordinary friendly inhabitants. It is occupied by hostile wildlife rather than by a settlement, faction or organised force.
The guiding candelabra outside is an environmental aid, not a resident or character. The Runebear is a boss encounter, while the Rats and Giant Rat are ordinary hostile creatures.
Character and faction directory
This absence is part of the location’s identity. Earthbore Cave is a self-contained animal den rather than an occupied ruin, mine or human settlement.

Enemies
Rat
Rats are the cave’s standard enemies. They are individually weak but dangerous in groups, particularly when encountered in darkness or while the player is standing on the edge of the collapsing floor.
Their attacks are fast enough to interrupt looting and can become troublesome if several Rats surround the player. A shield, wide-sweeping weapon or area spell can clear them efficiently.
Giant Rat
A Giant Rat appears among the smaller Rats in the lower chamber. It has greater health, reach and damage, but the room gives enough space to separate it from the smaller creatures if you avoid dropping directly into the middle of the group.
Some guides list possible Golden Rune and Rune Arc drops for Rats and Giant Rats. These should be treated as enemy-drop information rather than guaranteed fixed treasure. The fixed chest and corpse pickups are more reliable for route planning.

Boss: Runebear
The Runebear is the only boss in Earthbore Cave. It is encountered sleeping in the final cavern, and the player can usually begin the fight with a few attacks before it becomes active. Despite being a familiar overworld enemy type, this version receives a boss health bar and awards a dungeon reward.
The Spelldrake Talisman increases magical damage negation, making it useful when preparing for sorcery-heavy enemies. It is a defensive reward rather than a key item, so defeating the boss is optional for progression but worthwhile for many early characters.
Runebear tactics
The boss arena is cramped, which makes the Runebear’s size and lunges more dangerous than they may be in the open world.
The Runebear’s opening sleep is the safest opportunity for free damage, but greed can cause trouble if it wakes during a long attack animation. A few controlled hits are usually safer than committing to a full combo.
Boss directory
The boss is not tied to a questline or progression state in the base game. No known story event is required to make it appear or disappear.

Boss directory
| Boss | Location | Reward | Runes | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Runebear | Final chamber of Earthbore Cave | Spelldrake Talisman | 2,600 | Optional dungeon boss |
Items and collectibles
Earthbore Cave’s fixed rewards are modest but useful for an early exploration route.
Fixed loot
The chest is the most easily missed item because the floor in front of it collapses. The chest remains accessible after the fall, but opening it safely requires circling around the weak flooring or dealing with the Rats below.
Materials and consumables
The cave also contains or is reported to contain common cave materials, including:
These are gathering materials rather than unique dungeon rewards. Their appearance can be easy to miss in the darkness, and their value depends on the player’s crafting habits. The location is not a dedicated farming site, so it is usually better to collect them while clearing the cave rather than repeatedly resetting the dungeon solely for materials.
Enemy-associated or variable drops
Enemy drops should not be confused with guaranteed placed loot. A player seeking a complete inventory should inspect every corpse and defeat the cave’s enemies, but the precise drop behaviour may vary by enemy and is not equivalent to a fixed chest reward.
---
Fixed loot
| Item | Quantity | Location or source |
|---|---|---|
| Pickled Turtle Neck | 3 | Chest beyond the collapsing floor |
| Glowstone | 1 | Corpse in the deeper tunnel |
| Kukri | 5 | Corpse in the deeper tunnel |
| Spelldrake Talisman | 1 | Reward for defeating the Runebear |
Hazards and secrets
The collapsing floor
The cracked floor is the cave’s main environmental trick. It is not merely decoration. Walking across the central weak section causes the player to fall into the rat chamber.
The second approach is not a permanent trap, but it can place the player in an awkward position among several enemies. If you are low-level or carrying a large rune total, the safe route is preferable.
Darkness
The cave is dark enough for enemies to be hidden around corners and for item glints to be difficult to see. A torch or lantern makes the route substantially easier to read. This is especially important around the cracked floor and the shaft, where poor visibility can turn a controlled drop into fall damage.
The vertical commitment point
The ledged shaft is effectively a one-way progression point until the Runebear is defeated. Rest, heal and change equipment before descending. Do not treat the drop as a routine shortcut. It commits you to the boss route.
No hidden alternate branch
There is no verified second boss, secret NPC, locked side room, quest chamber or alternate exit within Earthbore Cave. The cave’s secrets are environmental and navigational rather than quest-based.
---
The collapsing floor: There are two valid approaches
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Safe approach | Walk around the outside edge, reach the chest and avoid the drop. |
| Aggressive approach | Allow the floor to collapse, defeat the Rats and Giant Rat, then collect the chest and continue. |
Progression and missability
Earthbore Cave is available as soon as the player can reach the northern Weeping Peninsula. It does not require:
Its content is optional and remains a useful early-game detour. There is no established base-game progression change that removes the cave, relocates the boss or changes the fixed loot. The main missable elements are practical rather than state-based:
No NPC quest or reward is known to become unavailable because of failing to visit Earthbore Cave at a particular point.
