Overview
Fort of Reprimand is an optional fortified dungeon in the south-east of Scadu Altus. It is one of the Realm of Shadow’s most useful early side locations because it can be approached from two directions, contains a Site of Grace on its battlements, and offers a route into the southern and eastern parts of Scadu Altus without requiring the player to follow the obvious Castle Ensis route.
The fort is not part of the base game. It appears only in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, and should not be confused with Fog Rift Fort, another small fort elsewhere in the DLC. Fog Rift Fort contains Black Knight Garrew, while Fort of Reprimand is the domain of Black Knight Edredd.
Scope and boundaries
Fort of Reprimand should be treated as a compact fort complex rather than as the whole surrounding countryside. The location includes:
The surrounding Moorth Highway, Bonny Village, Bonny Gaol, Castle Ensis, Gravesite Plain and the wider Scadu Altus road network are neighbouring locations, not subareas of the fort. They are included below only where they provide access or contextual connections.
The fort has no known resident merchant, friendly NPC hub, forge, purchasable property or permanent civilian settlement. Its apparent building interiors are military, punitive and storage spaces rather than businesses. Reports that refer to a “restaurant” or similar wording are describing the fort’s large interior hall, not a functioning shop or service. The fort’s entries and rewards are fixed rather than procedurally generated.
Fort of Reprimand occupies a fortified rise on the south-eastern edge of Scadu Altus. The structure overlooks the road from Moorth and is built around steep drops, walls and raised battlements. Its position makes it a useful landmark when travelling east from Castle Ensis or south from the Moorth area.
The fort’s visual language is unusually severe even by Messmer’s standards. Hanged soldiers, blood-stained chambers, charred bodies and stacked cages suggest a place used for punishment, intimidation and imprisonment rather than ordinary military defence. The fort is controlled by forces associated with Messmer, while Omenkillers move through the occupied complex. Eldenpedia describes the courtyard as containing hanged Messmer Soldiers and a burned pyre, with living soldiers still present in the subterranean chambers.
The fort is also notable for being vertically arranged. The player does not simply pass through a gate and climb a single staircase. The route loops through lower chambers, courtyards, wall sections, a boss hall and the roof. Several rewards are positioned so that the player must look above and below the apparent main path.
Named places within the Fort of Reprimand scope
Some of these names are descriptive guide labels rather than separate in-game map labels. The two Sites of Grace are canonical location names. The remaining terms identify distinct physical sections of the fort for navigation.
Named places within the Fort of Reprimand scope
Route 1: Moorth Highway, South
The most direct conventional route comes from the north-east side of Scadu Altus. From the Moorth area, follow the highway south towards the fort. The Moorth Highway, South Site of Grace is the nearest approach before entering the structure.
This route is the easiest to understand if the player has already reached Scadu Altus through Castle Ensis. The main route through the DLC leads from Gravesite Plain to Castle Ensis and, after the Rellana encounter, out towards Scadu Altus. Guides commonly describe leaving Castle Ensis by its northern exit and following the road towards Fort of Reprimand.
The road approach places the player near the lower or front side of the fort. From here, explore the courtyard and interior chambers before looking for the route up to the battlements.
Route 2: rear Spiritspring approach
The alternate route begins on the Gravesite Plain side. Use the Spiritsprings in the north-eastern part of Gravesite Plain to jump up towards the rear of the fort. This leads to the Behind the Fort of Reprimand Site of Grace, which sits outside or behind the fort’s main upper structure.
This route is valuable because it can provide access to Scadu Altus without first defeating Rellana. The Spiritspring route is not merely a shortcut to a single item. It can function as an early entrance into the broader region, allowing exploration of areas connected to Bonny Village and the roads beyond. Eldenpedia records the rear grace as an approach from north-eastern Gravesite Plain, while other guides identify the nearby Spiritspring route as the way to reach it.
Route 3: after Castle Ensis
If following the intended broad progression, the player normally reaches the fort after dealing with Castle Ensis. This does not mean that Fort of Reprimand is locked until Castle Ensis is completed. It is simply the route most players encounter naturally while moving into Scadu Altus.
The distinction matters
| Route | Requires defeating Rellana? | Starting side | Main advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moorth Highway, South | No, but normally reached after Castle Ensis | Scadu Altus | Direct front approach |
| Spiritspring route | No | Gravesite Plain | Early access to the rear grace and Scadu Altus |
| Castle Ensis exit | Yes, if using the normal post-castle progression | Gravesite Plain to Scadu Altus | Natural story-route connection |
Lower approach and courtyard
The lower area contains the fort’s most obvious signs of punishment. Messmer soldiers are displayed as corpses, and the courtyard includes a burned-out pyre and other remains. Omenkillers are the most conspicuous threat in this section.
The courtyard is dangerous because enemies can be encountered from several elevations. Do not assume that clearing the visible ground has made the approach safe. Check the walls, stair landings and cage-lined edges before collecting items.
Lower chambers and cages
The fort’s interior drops into grim subterranean rooms filled with cages and military debris. Living Messmer soldiers patrol these spaces. The arrangement is compact but easy to misread because the route passes through doorways, stairwells and open chambers that appear to lead back to earlier areas.
The cage sections also hide one of the fort’s most useful rewards, the Flamedrake Talisman +3. The talisman is reached by following the route around the cage structures and crossing over them rather than treating the first visible passage as the only way forward. Several walkthroughs specifically place the talisman in a chest beyond the cages.
Battlements
The upper fort contains a Site of Grace, Fort of Reprimand, and provides the main staging point for the boss route. The battlements allow the player to circle around the fort’s outside walls and approach the boss hall from an elevated position.
A useful habit is to activate this grace as soon as possible. It divides the location into a lower item-collection route and an upper boss-and-roof route. There are also exposed drops and missing sections of wall, so avoid sprinting blindly around the perimeter.
Boss hall
Black Knight Edredd occupies a large interior hall connected to the battlements. The hall is not a separate map location or an additional dungeon. It is the fort’s principal named encounter space.
Edredd uses a twinblade and has the winged attacks associated with the Ash of War he guards. His fight is contained within the hall, but the surrounding walls and entrance can make the approach awkward if the player enters while still being pursued by another enemy.
Roof and tower
After defeating Edredd, climb through the rear of the hall and continue upwards. The roof route leads to a tower containing Battlefield Priest’s Cookbook [2]. This is an easy reward to miss if the player assumes that the boss’s Ash of War completes the fort.
Fort of Reprimand has no conventional law-enforcement system or guards who raise an alarm across the entire dungeon. Its security is local and combat-based. Enemies generally patrol or remain within their own sections rather than triggering a fort-wide state.
Factions and forces
The fort is associated with Messmer’s army. Messmer Soldiers are present both as living enemies and as victims displayed around the fort. Omenkillers also occupy the fort, giving the location a different enemy composition from a normal Messmer military camp.
The combination is meaningful visually, but the game does not provide a dialogue scene explaining the fort’s chain of command. It is safest to describe the fort as a Messmer-aligned military and punitive installation rather than to assign it a more specific administrative role unsupported by in-game text.
Named and notable enemies
The Black Knight found here is Edredd. Black Knight Garrew is a separate boss at Fog Rift Fort and should not be included in a Fort of Reprimand directory.
Black Knight Edredd is the fort’s optional boss. He fights with a twinblade and is distinguished from ordinary Black Knights by his winged attacks. His reward is Ash of War: Aspects of the Crucible: Wings.
Edredd’s most dangerous feature is his mobility. He can cross the room quickly and use airborne or spinning attacks that punish players who try to heal at short range. The fight is still relatively compact, so maintaining medium distance is usually safer than retreating all the way to the doorway.
Named and notable enemies
Practical strategy
Defeating Edredd is not required for the DLC’s main progression. It does, however, provide a unique Ash of War and opens the safe route to the upper tower.
The following directory consolidates the verified named rewards and collectible types associated with the fort and its immediate approach. Exact quantities can vary by item placement, and several minor materials are distributed among corpses, chests and ordinary drops.
Practical strategy: steps
- 01Activate the Fort of Reprimand Site of Grace before entering the boss hall.
- 02Clear or avoid nearby enemies so the fight begins without additional pressure.
- 03Watch for Edredd’s winged movement rather than attacking immediately after every apparent opening.
- 04Use the sides of the hall to create space, but do not become trapped against the walls.
- 05Punish the end of his longer spinning or airborne sequences.
- 06Spirit summons are available for the encounter according to boss-directory references, making the fight more manageable for builds that struggle against mobile melee enemies.
Runes and miscellaneous rewards
Eldenpedia’s location listing confirms the principal enemies, talisman and Ash of War, while walkthrough material provides the broader item trail, including the cookbook, Messmer Soldier Ashes, Iris of Occultation, Marika’s Rune and smithing materials.
Item route
The Iris is associated with the first Omenkiller encounter in the fort according to the detailed dungeon guide.
A practical collection order is
- 01Enter through the lower approach and clear the courtyard.
- 02Search the bodies and walls around the pyre and hanged soldiers.
- 03Explore the cage-filled chambers before climbing.
- 04Cross around the cage structures to reach the chest containing Flamedrake Talisman +3.
- 05Find the lower exit leading towards the rear exterior and collect Messmer Soldier Ashes.
- 06Reach and activate the Fort of Reprimand Site of Grace.
- 07Sweep the battlements for minor materials and the wall-side items.
- 08Enter the boss hall and defeat Black Knight Edredd.
- 09Climb through the hall to the upper roof and tower.
- 10Open the chest containing Battlefield Priest’s Cookbook [2].
- 11Return through the lower and rear sections if you have not yet collected Iris of Occultation and Marika’s Rune.
Recommended full-clear route
- 01Reach the fort. Use either Moorth Highway, South or the rear Spiritspring route.
Recommended full-clear route
- 01Activate the nearest grace. If approaching from the rear, activate Behind the Fort of Reprimand. If approaching from the front, make your way upwards and activate Fort of Reprimand as soon as it becomes available.
Recommended full-clear route
- 01Clear the lower chambers. Deal with Omenkillers and Messmer soldiers carefully. The cages can obstruct movement, so avoid fighting several enemies in a narrow passage when possible.
Recommended full-clear route
- 01Collect the talisman. Search the cage-lined route and cross over the relevant cage structure to reach the chest containing Flamedrake Talisman +3.
Recommended full-clear route
- 01Search the corpse and courtyard areas. Collect the minor materials, runes and consumables before moving to the upper levels.
Recommended full-clear route
- 01Find the exterior route. Continue through the lower structure until you emerge near the grave and outer wall sections. The Messmer Soldier Ashes are found in this broader lower-to-upper route.
Recommended full-clear route
- 01Return to the upper grace. From Fort of Reprimand, prepare for the boss hall and explore the battlements.
Recommended full-clear route
- 01Defeat Black Knight Edredd. The reward is Ash of War: Aspects of the Crucible: Wings.
Recommended full-clear route
- 01Climb to the roof tower. Use the ladders beyond the boss hall and continue upwards to find Battlefield Priest’s Cookbook [2].
Recommended full-clear route
- 01Finish the rear and side sweep. Check any remaining cells, cage platforms, corpses and battlement edges. The location is compact, but several collectibles are placed off the direct line to the boss.
The fort can be reached earlier than expected
The most important “secret” is geographical rather than a hidden wall. The rear Spiritspring route allows the player to reach Behind the Fort of Reprimand from Gravesite Plain without first completing Castle Ensis. This makes the fort useful for early exploration of Scadu Altus.
Cages obscure the intended route
The cage-filled rooms are designed to make the player look for alternate elevation. If a visible passage appears to end at a cage, check whether the player can climb, jump or circle around it. The Flamedrake Talisman +3 is the clearest example.
The rear grace is not the main dungeon grace
Behind the Fort of Reprimand and Fort of Reprimand are separate Sites of Grace. Activating only the rear grace does not mean the upper fort has been fully mapped or cleared.
Do not confuse the two Black Knights
This is the most common naming error in secondary guides:
The two forts are separate locations, and the bosses should not be merged into one entry.
Fort of Reprimand presents punishment as spectacle. The hanged soldiers, pyre, cages and blood-stained rooms suggest that the site was intended to communicate fear as much as to confine prisoners. Its name also implies judgement or disciplinary action rather than simple battlefield defence.
The presence of Omenkillers is especially striking. Their role elsewhere in Elden Ring is connected with the persecution and killing of Omen, so their deployment alongside Messmer’s soldiers reinforces the fort’s atmosphere of repression. However, the game does not explicitly state the exact administrative relationship between the Omenkillers and the fort’s military occupants. Their presence supports an interpretation of institutional violence, but not a fully documented chain of command.
The fort’s position also matters. It sits at a transition point between the lower western land around Gravesite Plain, the road network of Scadu Altus and the southern approaches towards Bonny Village and other optional areas. Its design therefore serves both narrative and navigational purposes: it is a physical threshold into the region and a visual statement about the brutality of the forces occupying it.
Before leaving Fort of Reprimand, confirm that you have:
Do not confuse the two Black Knights
| Character | Location | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| Black Knight Edredd | Fort of Reprimand | Ash of War: Aspects of the Crucible: Wings |
| Black Knight Garrew | Fog Rift Fort | Black Steel Greatshield |
Is Fort of Reprimand required?
No. It is an optional location and Black Knight Edredd is not required for the main Shadow of the Erdtree storyline.
Can I reach it before defeating Rellana?
Yes. The rear Spiritspring route from Gravesite Plain can lead to Behind the Fort of Reprimand and onward into Scadu Altus. The normal road approach is more likely to be encountered after progressing through Castle Ensis, but the fort itself is not dependent on Rellana’s defeat.
Where is Flamedrake Talisman +3?
It is in a chest in the cage-filled section of the fort. Explore around and over the cages rather than following only the obvious ground-level corridor.
Who is the boss?
The boss is Black Knight Edredd. Black Knight Garrew is found at the separate Fog Rift Fort.
What does Edredd drop?
Edredd drops Ash of War: Aspects of the Crucible: Wings. The Ash of War is the fort’s most distinctive boss reward.
Is there a merchant or NPC quest here?
No verified resident merchant, friendly quest NPC or permanent service provider is associated with the fort. Its important interactions are the Sites of Grace, enemy encounters, boss fight and fixed loot.
Does the fort change after major DLC progression?
No major progression-state change is verified for the fort itself. The location remains an optional combat and exploration area. As with other Elden Ring locations, wider world events may affect nearby NPC routes or regional progression, but there is no verified fort-specific quest phase that should be treated as a reset or alternate layout.
