About this guide
Scope: Base-game Elden Ring. This guide covers Lux Ruins proper, its immediate exterior grounds, the underground boss chamber, the nearby Erdtree-Gazing Hill Site of Grace, and the short route between the ruins and the Grand Lift of Dectus. It does not merge in the wider Altus Plateau, the Grand Lift itself, the Altus Highway Junction, or the nearby Ancient Dragon Lansseax encounter.
Overview
Lux Ruins is a small but worthwhile ruin complex in south-western Altus Plateau. Its broken stone buildings are occupied by demi-humans, including Demi-Human Queen Gilika, while the surrounding slopes provide a useful route between the Grand Lift of Dectus, Erdtree-Gazing Hill and the western Altus Plateau. The ruin is also one of the possible places where Rya the Scout waits after her Liurnia quest step, making it an important transition point for the Volcano Manor storyline.

Overview and boundaries
Lux Ruins occupies a compact group of roofless stone structures on the southern side of Altus Plateau. The ruins sit above and slightly south of the Erdtree-Gazing Hill Site of Grace, with a cliff and open terrain separating the two. The Grace is a nearby checkpoint rather than a separate interior section of Lux Ruins, but it is closely tied to the location because Rya can appear there and because it is the most convenient recovery point after clearing the ruin.
The nearby Grand Lift of Dectus is a connected landmark for navigation, but it is not part of Lux Ruins. Likewise, the Erdtree-Gazing Hill Grace should be treated as a neighbouring checkpoint rather than as a subarea inside the ruin complex.

The site has three practical parts
- 01The approach and outer grounds, where demi-humans patrol among the trees, rocks and broken walls.
- 02The main ruined structure, containing the surface loot and the route to the Shield Crash scarab.
- 03The underground cellar, reached by stairs inside the ruins and sealed by a boss fog wall. This is where Demi-Human Queen Gilika is fought.

Geography and approach
Lux Ruins lies north of the Grand Lift of Dectus in the south-western part of Altus Plateau. From the lift, leave the immediate lift approach and ride north through the open golden-grass terrain. The ruined walls become visible ahead. The route is short, but the demi-humans around the structure can be difficult to spot in vegetation and behind broken masonry.
There are two broad ways to reach the area:
From the Grand Lift of Dectus
This is the direct route for a character who entered Altus using the Dectus Medallion. Ride north from the lift and look for the low, roofless ruins. This is usually the simplest approach because the location is close to the lift and does not require navigating the western plateau first.
The Grand Lift requires both halves of the Dectus Medallion. The left half is found at Fort Haight in Limgrave, while the right half is found at Fort Faroth in Caelid.
From the Ruin-Strewn Precipice
The second route is through the Ruin-Strewn Precipice in northern Liurnia. This route reaches Altus without the Dectus Medallion, but requires defeating Magma Wyrm Makar. After arriving in Altus, continue towards the southern plateau and the Lux Ruins area.
This route matters for Rya’s positioning. If the player has completed the relevant Liurnia step in her quest, Rya can be found near Lux Ruins when Altus is entered through the Ruin-Strewn Precipice. If the player instead activates the Grand Lift of Dectus, she appears beside the Altus entrance of the lift rather than at Lux Ruins.
Suggested approach route

Suggested approach route
- 01Start at the Grand Lift of Dectus or arrive in Altus through the Ruin-Strewn Precipice.
- 02Travel north towards the visible stone ruins.
- 03Approach slowly and use lock-on or the camera to check shrubs and wall corners.
- 04Clear the outer demi-humans before entering the main structure.
- 05Search the surface ruins and defeat the Teardrop Scarab.
- 06Descend to the cellar and defeat Demi-Human Queen Gilika.
- 07Rest at Erdtree-Gazing Hill before continuing towards western Altus Plateau.
Subareas and landmarks
Outer ruin grounds
The exterior contains broken walls, low vegetation and scattered demi-humans. The enemies are not arranged as a formal camp with a named leader, but their positions encourage a cautious approach. Several can be pulled separately if the player stays near the outside walls rather than charging through the centre.
The outer grounds are also where the Teardrop Scarab associated with Ash of War: Shield Crash can be found. The scarab is positioned in a small side area or alcove connected to the ruined structure. It can move away quickly, so ranged attacks, mounted pursuit or a quick weapon skill are useful if it begins rolling towards the open ground.
Main ruined structure
The central structure has a stairway leading down to the boss chamber. It also contains ordinary pickups and routes around the broken interior. The most important surface objective is the Shield Crash scarab, while the most important underground objective is Gilika and the chest behind her.
The architecture is deliberately modest. Lux Ruins is not a legacy dungeon with multiple floors, branching halls or a hidden region. Its challenge comes from reading the compact space, dealing with enemies before they surround the player and finding the underground entrance.
Underground cellar
The cellar is a short boss arena rather than an extended dungeon. Entering the fog wall begins the fight with Demi-Human Queen Gilika. After she is defeated, the chest in the chamber can be opened to obtain the Ritual Sword Talisman.
Erdtree-Gazing Hill
The Erdtree-Gazing Hill Site of Grace is north of the ruins, at the bottom of the nearby cliff. It is the principal checkpoint for this local area and is particularly relevant to Rya’s quest placement. It is not a shop or service hub, but it provides the usual benefits of a Site of Grace, including healing, fast travel, levelling when available, flask management and other standard grace functions.

Residents, NPCs and factions
Rya the Scout
Rya is the only named NPC associated with Lux Ruins. She appears here only under a particular progression state:
When those conditions are met, Rya waits near Lux Ruins and can offer to transport the player to Volcano Manor. If the player reaches Altus through the Grand Lift of Dectus instead, Rya is found beside the lift’s Altus entrance.
This makes Rya’s appearance at Lux Ruins a progression-dependent encounter, not a permanent resident who is always present. She is also protected from being killed at this stage of her quest.
Demi-human occupants
The ruins are occupied by a small demi-human group led by a queen. The local enemies include ordinary Demi-Humans and Demi-Human Chiefs, while the underground boss is Demi-Human Queen Gilika.
The demi-humans are a recurring faction across the Lands Between. Their society retains a hierarchy of ordinary members, chiefs and queens, although many groups have declined into violent or semi-feral communities. Demi-Human Queen Gilika’s presence fits this wider pattern of a queen ruling a small local colony.

Enemies and boss
Demi-Humans
The smaller demi-humans use quick melee attacks and can be dangerous in groups. Their size makes them easy to overlook behind ruined walls, but their speed allows them to close distance rapidly. Pulling one or two at a time is safer than fighting in the middle of the ruin.
Some demi-human drops are random rather than guaranteed. Their general loot table can include items such as String, Glass Shards, Ruin Fragments, Rainbow Stones, Glowstones and weapon drops, but these should be treated as enemy drops rather than fixed Lux Ruins collectibles.
Demi-Human Chiefs
Demi-Human Chiefs are larger, more aggressive variants that can lead nearby demi-humans. Killing a chief can reduce the pressure from surrounding enemies because nearby demi-humans may lose their morale and stop fighting as effectively. Their possible drops include String, Glass Shards, Ruin Fragments, Rainbow Stones, Glowstones and, depending on the variant, a Bloodstained Dagger. These are random enemy drops, not guaranteed rewards for clearing Lux Ruins.
Demi-Human Queen Gilika
Demi-Human Queen Gilika is the optional boss in the underground cellar. She is a large demi-human queen with long limbs, a staff and powerful close-range attacks. Her attacks have noticeable recovery windows, which makes the fight manageable if the player avoids panic-rolling and punishes after her larger swings.
Practical tactics
Gilika has 3,284 HP in the listed encounter data, awards 8,500 runes, and guards the chest containing the Ritual Sword Talisman.
Enemy and boss directory
The scarab is not a conventional combat enemy and does not respawn after its reward has been collected.

Items and collectibles
Fixed rewards
Ash of War: Shield Crash is the most easily missed reward because the scarab is not in the obvious central route. Search the side of the ruined structure and be ready to chase it if it begins rolling away.
Ritual Sword Talisman increases attack power while HP is at maximum. It is especially useful for builds that open encounters with full health, ranged attacks, stealth or a strong first strike. The talisman is a fixed chest reward after the boss and is not random.
Nearby fixed pickup
A Lightningproof Dried Liver can be found on a high rock south of Lux Ruins. This is in the immediate surrounding terrain rather than in the central ruin structure. It temporarily increases lightning damage negation and can be useful in the wider Altus area, particularly when facing lightning-based threats.
Crafting materials and ordinary pickups
The Lux Ruins area is associated with several ordinary crafting-material pickups:
The exact distribution of small pickups can be easy to overlook among the vegetation and broken walls. Some materials may be found as world pickups, while others can also appear through enemy drops. Do not treat every listed material as a guaranteed chest or corpse reward.

Random enemy drops
The random-drop list should not be read as a guaranteed inventory for one clear. Drop rates vary by enemy and item, and some entries are associated with enemy variants found in or around Altus Plateau rather than with a unique Lux Ruins chest.

Hazards and secrets
Hidden enemies in the vegetation
The main danger is not a trap or environmental status effect. It is the low visibility around the ruins. Demi-humans can remain hidden behind grass, shrubs and broken walls, allowing several to attack together. Move around the outside edge first and use the terrain to break line of sight.
The scarab can escape
The Shield Crash scarab is easy to miss and can move away from the ruin. If it starts rolling towards open terrain, chase it immediately or use a ranged attack. Leaving the area or dying before killing it may require returning to search the route again.
The boss is below ground
Lux Ruins’ surface structure can appear to be the entire location at first glance. The stairway to the cellar is the key visual clue that the ruins contain a boss encounter. If the boss fog wall has not been found, search the central structure rather than assuming the location is only an enemy camp.
No shop or upgrade service
Despite being a named ruin location, Lux Ruins has no merchant, smith, grace-based special service or purchasable property. Its practical rewards are exploration items, the Ash of War, the talisman and the possible Rya interaction.
---
Lore
Lux Ruins has no large, explicit lore sequence of its own, but its occupants connect it to the wider history of the demi-humans. Demi-human society is shown throughout the game as hierarchical, with ordinary members serving under chiefs and queens. The queens are larger and more intelligent than their followers, and their staffs reflect an older relationship with glintstone and sorcery. The Demi-Human Queen’s Staff description presents the sceptre as something once given to demi-humans to encourage peace, even though it is looked down upon by members of the Academy.
Lux Ruins therefore reads as a small surviving demi-human settlement rather than a purely abandoned ruin. Its walls are broken and its inhabitants are hostile, but the presence of a queen suggests an organised community with its own internal hierarchy.
The ruin’s proximity to the Erdtree-Gazing Hill and the Grand Lift also gives it a transitional role. It lies at the point where the player moves from the lift’s southern entrance into the wider Altus Plateau, while Rya’s appearance links the location to Volcano Manor and the political conflict surrounding the Recusants.
---
Progression changes and missable states
Rya’s presence is conditional
Rya does not always appear at Lux Ruins. Her presence depends on completing her Liurnia interaction and entering Altus through the Ruin-Strewn Precipice. Entering through the Grand Lift places her at the lift instead. This is a progression variation, not a separate version of the location.
Rya can move on
Once the relevant Volcano Manor interactions begin, Rya leaves the Lux Ruins area and continues her quest at Volcano Manor. If she is not present, this does not mean Lux Ruins is incomplete.
Fixed loot remains available
The Shield Crash Ash of War and Ritual Sword Talisman are fixed rewards. They are not dependent on Rya’s quest, the player’s choice of Altus entrance or a particular ending path.
Night-time behaviour
Demi-humans are generally more aggressive at night, and wider demi-human lore describes them becoming increasingly feral after nightfall. For a safer first clear, visit during the day. The location does not have a separate night-only boss or unique Night’s Cavalry encounter.
