About this guide
Scope: Base game Elden Ring. This guide covers the named location Mistwood Ruins itself, including its ruin complex, underground cellar, resident encounter and fixed pickups. It does not treat the whole of Mistwood, Fort Haight, the Mistwood outskirts, or the nearby Siofra River Well as parts of the ruins. Those are neighbouring locations with their own content.
Overview
Mistwood Ruins is a small but important early-game ruin in eastern Limgrave, hidden among the trees of Mistwood. Its most significant feature is not a boss fight but an encounter with Blaidd the Half-Wolf, whose first appearance here introduces one of the game’s major character and quest lines. The ruins are also occupied by a sleeping Runebear, and their cellar contains the Axe Talisman.

Overview and boundaries
Mistwood Ruins is the crumbling stone structure in the central part of Mistwood, east of the main Limgrave road. The playable location is essentially the ruin footprint: the outer stone remains, the tower where Blaidd can be heard, the enclosed area occupied by the Runebear, and the underground cellar.
The wider woodland around it belongs to Mistwood, a broader regional area containing several independent landmarks and routes. The following are nearby, but should not be folded into Mistwood Ruins:
The Limgrave, East map fragment is found on the road through Mistwood, at an obelisk away from the ruins. It is useful for navigation but is not a collectible inside Mistwood Ruins.
Overview and boundaries
Geography and layout
The ruins consist of broken stone walls and raised sections surrounding a central open area. The structure is partly overgrown, and its height makes it easy to hear Blaidd before finding him. The howling is an audio clue rather than a separate collectible or event marker.
The underground cellar is reached from the ruin area by descending through the interior. It is a compact chamber containing the Axe Talisman. The Runebear’s position can make the descent awkward, particularly for a low-level character, so there is no need to fight it immediately if the objective is simply to collect the talisman.
Named places within the location
The tower is a descriptive landmark rather than a separately named map location. It is the structure associated with Blaidd’s first appearance.

Access and recommended routes
Mistwood Ruins can be reached during the opening exploration of Limgrave. From western or central Limgrave, follow the road eastwards towards Mistwood, then leave the road and search the woodland for the ruined stone structure. The ruins are west of the Minor Erdtree in eastern Limgrave.
The ruins themselves do not require a key, quest item or area unlock. The Finger Snap requirement applies to the Blaidd encounter, not to physical access to the ruins.
A practical early-game route is
- 01Travel through Limgrave towards Mistwood.
- 02Pick up the Limgrave, East map fragment on the main woodland road if the map is still obscured.
- 03Continue towards the ruins and listen for howling.
- 04Do not attack the large creature immediately unless you are prepared for the fight.
- 05Visit the Church of Elleh and speak with Merchant Kalé about the howling.
- 06Return to Mistwood Ruins and use Finger Snap beneath the relevant tower.
- 07Speak to Blaidd and exhaust his dialogue.
- 08Explore the cellar and collect the Axe Talisman when safe.
Residents and characters
Blaidd the Half-Wolf
Blaidd is found above the ruins, initially heard rather than seen. After the player has heard the howling, returning to Merchant Kalé at the Church of Elleh unlocks the conversation option concerning the howling in Mistwood. Kalé then provides the Finger Snap gesture. Use it beneath the tower where the sound originates to call Blaidd down.
Blaidd’s dialogue identifies his immediate objective: finding Darriwil, the enemy imprisoned in the Forlorn Hound Evergaol. This connects Mistwood Ruins to the early Blaidd quest sequence. Blaidd can assist as a summon during the Darriwil encounter, and speaking with him afterwards leads to a Somber Smithing Stone [2] reward according to the documented quest progression.
Blaidd encounter checklist
Blaidd later appears in other locations, including Siofra River, Redmane Castle and the Three Sisters. Those later appearances are not subareas of Mistwood Ruins. They are separate progression states in his quest.
Merchant Kalé
Merchant Kalé is not a resident of Mistwood Ruins. He remains at the Church of Elleh, but is essential to activating the Blaidd encounter. Do not list him as an inhabitant of the ruins. His role here is that of a connected NPC who provides the required gesture.
Enemies and hazards
Runebear
A Runebear inhabits the ruins. It is a powerful ordinary enemy with high damage, strong close-range attacks and dangerous movement in the confined ruin space. It is not a named boss and does not provide a unique remembrance or boss reward.
A safer approach is to lure the Runebear away from the cellar entrance, collect the item when there is an opening, or return later after gaining levels and equipment. Ranged attacks and mounted movement can make the encounter more manageable, but neither is required.
Enemy directory
No separate boss is documented for Mistwood Ruins. The Forlorn Hound Evergaol, although connected to Blaidd’s dialogue, is a different location and contains the Bloodhound Knight Darriwil encounter.
Enemy directory
Items and collectibles
The fixed notable loot associated with the ruins includes the following:
The Axe Talisman improves charged attack damage and is particularly relevant to builds that make regular use of charged heavy attacks. It is one of the location’s main reasons to search the cellar rather than simply completing Blaidd’s encounter.
The ruins and their immediate vegetation can also contain ordinary crafting materials such as Erdleaf Flower, Mushroom, Rowa Fruit and additional Trina’s Lily listings in location databases. These materials should be treated separately from the named fixed loot because gathering nodes may be collected, respawned or documented differently by reference source.
Environmental crafting materials
The map fragment for Limgrave, East is not included in this directory because it is found beside the road elsewhere in Mistwood, not inside the ruin complex.
Items and collectibles
| Item | Location | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Axe Talisman | Cellar beneath the ruins | Fixed talisman pickup |
| Smithing Stone [2] | Ruin interior or surrounding structure | Fixed upgrade material |
| Golden Rune [2] | Ruin area | Fixed rune item |
| Trina’s Lily x5 | Ruin area | Fixed crafting material |
Walkthrough
Route A: Blaidd first
This is the safest route if the location is being visited for story progression.
Route B: Loot first
The two routes can be combined. There is no requirement to defeat the Runebear before speaking to Blaidd.
Route A: Blaidd first
- 01Approach Mistwood Ruins and listen for the howling.
- 02Avoid provoking the Runebear.
- 03Travel to the Church of Elleh.
- 04Speak with Merchant Kalé and select the dialogue concerning the howling in Mistwood.
- 05Return to the ruins.
- 06Stand beneath the tower associated with the howling.
- 07Use Finger Snap.
- 08Speak to Blaidd when he comes down.
- 09Exhaust his dialogue about Darriwil.
- 10Leave the ruins and continue to Forlorn Hound Evergaol if you want to pursue the next step.
Route B: Loot first
- 01Enter the ruins cautiously.
- 02Circle the outer walls and collect exposed pickups.
- 03Watch the Runebear’s position before entering the cellar.
- 04Lure the creature away or wait for a safe opening.
- 05Descend into the cellar.
- 06Collect the Axe Talisman.
- 07Leave by the same route or deal with the Runebear afterwards.
- 08Return to Kalé if the howling event has not yet been activated.
Connections to nearby content
Mistwood
Mistwood is the forest region surrounding the ruins. It contains the main road, the Limgrave, East map fragment, woodland enemies and routes towards other eastern Limgrave locations. The forest should be treated as the parent area rather than as part of the ruins.
Siofra River Well
The Siofra River Well is a separate landmark in Mistwood. Its lift leads underground to the Siofra River region. It is sometimes mentioned alongside Mistwood Ruins because both are associated with Blaidd’s early quest and eastern Limgrave exploration, but the well is not a subarea of the ruins.
Fort Haight
Fort Haight lies elsewhere in eastern Limgrave. It is a separate fortification with its own enemies, items and progression relevance. Its proximity does not make it part of Mistwood Ruins.
Forlorn Hound Evergaol
This is the most important quest connection. After meeting Blaidd at Mistwood Ruins, the player can investigate Darriwil at the Evergaol. Blaidd may participate in the fight, and speaking to him afterwards provides the documented Somber Smithing Stone [2] progression reward.
Progression changes and missable states
Mistwood Ruins has a relatively small number of state changes, but Blaidd’s placement is quest-dependent.
The most important practical warning is simple: do not attack Blaidd. If he becomes hostile because of accidental damage or deliberate aggression, the situation is different from merely failing to trigger his dialogue. The available sources document that killing him can prevent later connected NPC appearances, so players pursuing Ranni’s storyline should avoid experimenting with violence here.
