Key takeaways
- Moorth Ruins is more than the visible ruin field Its underground passage is the main route to Bonny Village.
- Dryleaf Dane stands east of the Site of Grace Use the May the Best Win gesture rather than attempting normal dialogue.
- Dane’s encounter is missable in practical terms You need the gesture from Highroad Cross and should complete the duel before advancing too far through the DLC’s NPC story.
- Bonny Village is a separate location, not simply a sub-room of Moorth Ruins It is reached through Moorth’s underground route and has its own Site of Grace, items and exploration.
- The route through the ruins is a major regional connector It links the central Scadu Altus roads with Bonny Village and the eastern approach to Shadow Keep.
- The surface contains valuable early DLC progression items, including a Scadutree Fragment, a Revered Spirit Ash and the Shattered Stone Talisman, although some directories combine minor loot from the ruins with nearby Bonny Village content.
Note
Location: Scadu Altus, Realm of Shadow Game: Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree Type: Open-world ruin settlement with an underground route Nearest Site of Grace: Moorth Ruins Principal connection: Bonny Village Major encounter: Dryleaf Dane Recommended status: Optional, but highly valuable for exploration, NPC progression and access to eastern Scadu Altus
Overview
Moorth Ruins is a collapsed Hornsent settlement in eastern Scadu Altus. On the surface, it appears to be a small cluster of broken buildings surrounding a Site of Grace and Miquella’s Cross. Its real importance lies below ground. A large breach in the ruins leads through a partially buried passage to Bonny Village, opening a route towards the eastern roads, Shadow Keep’s Church District and the northern Finger Ruins.
The location also hosts the second major meeting with Dryleaf Dane. Completing his challenge awards the Dryleaf Arts hand-to-hand weapon and Dane’s Hat, making Moorth Ruins one of the earliest places where the DLC’s new martial-arts weapon class can be obtained.
The settlement’s ruined state is tied to the destruction of a Hornsent linchpin stone, an object said to stabilise the earth and restrain earthquakes. The item description of the Shattered Stone Talisman describes a settlement sinking into the ground after such a stone was broken. The ruins’ great chasm and buried architecture provide the visual counterpart to that account.
Included areas
Surface Moorth Ruins
This is the area normally marked by the Moorth Ruins Site of Grace. It contains the visible masonry, Dane’s position, Miquella’s Cross and the entrances to the sunken section.
The underground collapse
The hole is not a separate legacy dungeon with a fog gate or boss arena. It is an open route through broken buildings and tunnels. The path includes drops, ledges and ladders, so it is easy to overlook the intended route if you jump directly into the deepest part of the collapse.
Excluded neighbouring areas
The following locations are connected to Moorth Ruins but should not be counted as part of the location itself:
The Ruined Forge of Starfall Past, for example, is reached by following the Moorth Highway south-west, but it is a separate dungeon and should not be folded into a Moorth Ruins directory.
---
The usual approach is from the western side of Scadu Altus.
Excluded neighbouring areas
From Highroad Cross
This is also the route used for Dryleaf Dane’s quest. The Monk’s Missive directs the player east, and Dane is found a short distance beyond the grace.
From Highroad Cross: steps
- 01Start at Highroad Cross after progressing beyond Castle Ensis.
- 02Follow the road north from the Site of Grace.
- 03At the junction, take the south-eastern branch.
- 04Continue along the road until the Moorth Ruins Site of Grace appears to the east.
- 05Activate the grace before exploring the ruin field.
From the south
The road approaching from the south connects with the wider Moorth Highway network. This route is useful if you are travelling from the direction of the Ruined Forge of Starfall Past, although the forge itself is not part of Moorth Ruins.
From Bonny Village
You cannot normally reach the surface of Moorth Ruins by simply travelling north from Bonny Village. The practical route works in the opposite direction:
Once Bonny Village is unlocked, the two locations form a useful loop through eastern Scadu Altus.
---
From Bonny Village: steps
- 01Enter the underground passage from Moorth Ruins.
- 02Follow the ledges and tunnels.
- 03Climb the ladder at the far end.
- 04Emerge at Bonny Village.
Moorth Ruins Site of Grace
The Site of Grace stands on the north-western side of the ruin field. It is the location’s central checkpoint and the correct starting point for both major activities:
Resting here also makes it easy to reload the area after the Dane encounter and check whether quest-related objects have appeared.
Miquella’s Cross
A Miquella’s Cross stands beside the Site of Grace. It contributes to the DLC’s wider Miquella-cross exploration and provides one of the region’s Scadutree Blessing progression points.
Miquella’s Crosses are not merely decorative landmarks. Each one is a collectible objective, and collecting the associated fragment improves the player’s Scadutree Blessing when exchanged at a Site of Grace.
The ruined church and the great hole
The most important structural landmark is the ruined church-like building near the eastern side of the area. A large breach along its northern side descends into the buried section of the settlement.
Do not treat the hole as a simple vertical drop. The intended route uses ledges and platforms around the walls before entering the lower tunnel system. If you fall too far, you may die or land in a section that is difficult to leave.
The sunken settlement
The lowest parts of Moorth Ruins show the damage caused by the collapse. Broken walls, buried structures and narrow passages make the area feel more like a settlement swallowed by the earth than a conventional combat ruin.
The Shattered Stone Talisman provides the clearest textual connection between the ruined town and the Hornsent belief in linchpin stones. The game does not explicitly identify every visible piece of masonry, but the geography strongly supports reading Moorth as a settlement destabilised by the loss of its spiritual anchor.
---
Dryleaf Dane is the location’s most important named character and its principal combat encounter.
He stands a short distance east of the Moorth Ruins Site of Grace. Unlike most NPCs, he does not respond to ordinary conversation at this stage. Instead, the player must perform the May the Best Win gesture near him. This gesture is obtained beside Hornsent at Highroad Cross, together with the Monk’s Missive, after progressing through Castle Ensis.
How to start the duel
Speaking to Dane does not begin the fight. The gesture is the trigger.
How to start the duel: steps
- 01Obtain May the Best Win at Highroad Cross.
- 02Read the Monk’s Missive, if desired.
- 03Travel to Moorth Ruins.
- 04Find Dane east of the Site of Grace.
- 05Perform May the Best Win while facing him.
- 06Enter the separate duel arena.
Fighting Dryleaf Dane
Dane fights without conventional armour or a visible weapon. His attacks are based on the Dryleaf martial-arts moveset:
His lack of heavy armour gives him relatively low poise, but his speed makes careless attacks dangerous. His jumping attacks can create opportunities for a vertical strike or a well-timed counter. Gamer Guides also notes that bleed and frostbite are effective options, although the fight is manageable with any well-developed build if the player waits for his recovery windows.
Rewards
The Dryleaf Arts is a fist weapon using the DLC’s hand-to-hand combat style. After the fight, the player returns to Moorth Ruins and can find a note from Dane encouraging further training.
Dane later appears in the DLC’s wider NPC storyline, including the confrontation near the end of the expansion. His later appearance and rewards are not part of Moorth Ruins itself, but completing the duel here establishes the character’s progression.
Named entries: characters and encounters
---
The following are the principal named items associated with Moorth Ruins in commonly used location directories. Some minor drops may depend on enemy type or be recorded differently by database projects, so the list distinguishes fixed rewards from general loot.
Defeating Dane awards

Fixed or notable collectibles
The principal location directory lists these items among Moorth Ruins’ notable and minor loot.
Fixed or notable collectibles
| Item | Location or source | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Scadutree Fragment | Near the Miquella’s Cross | Used to improve the Scadutree Blessing |
| Revered Spirit Ash | Within the ruin area | Improves Revered Spirit Ash Blessing |
| Shattered Stone Talisman | In the ruins | Boosts attacks connected with the DLC’s stone-related mechanics |
| Dryleaf Arts | Reward for defeating Dryleaf Dane | Obtained through the gesture-triggered duel |
| Dane’s Hat | Reward for defeating Dryleaf Dane | Headgear associated with the Dryleaf tradition |
| Fire Knight’s Cookbook [1] | Ruin exploration loot | Cookbook entry, not a shop purchase |
| Golden Arcs | Ruin exploration loot | Sorcery found during exploration |
| Golden Horn Tender | Minor loot | Consumable |
| Shadow Sunflower | Minor loot or harvestable-style material | Treat as a local pickup rather than a guaranteed enemy reward |
Items not to attribute to Moorth Ruins
Several nearby collectibles are frequently confused with the ruins because the underground route leads directly towards them:
The O Mother gesture is particularly important because it later opens a secret route. Its pickup location is Bonny Village, not the Moorth surface ruins.
Named entries: items and collectibles
---
The ruin field is not a major boss dungeon, but it contains hostile creatures in confined spaces. Recorded enemy types include:
Curseblades are particularly dangerous in the open ruin field because their mobility allows them to cross broken ground quickly. Shadow enemies can be difficult to see among the dark masonry and collapsed interiors.

Environmental hazards
Falls
The largest danger is not an enemy but the vertical layout. The collapse contains multiple ledges and drops. Use the camera to identify platforms before committing to a jump, and avoid dropping directly into the deepest shaft unless you can see a safe landing.
Ambushes in buried rooms
The lower structures contain enemies positioned around corners and in recessed spaces. Do not sprint through the tunnel simply because the surface appears quiet.
Navigation loss
The passage to Bonny Village is easy to miss if you explore only the upper ruins. When you reach the ruined church, search its northern side for the breach and follow the ledges down.
---
Surface exploration route
- 01Begin at the Moorth Ruins Site of Grace.
- 02Collect the nearby Scadutree-related reward at Miquella’s Cross.
- 03Move east and locate Dryleaf Dane.
- 04Confirm that you have May the Best Win before trying to activate his encounter.
- 05Defeat Dane and collect Dryleaf Arts and Dane’s Hat.
- 06Return to the surface and search the ruin buildings.
- 07Investigate the ruined church and locate the large breach.
- 08Descend carefully through the ledges.
- 09Follow the underground passage until you reach the ladder leading to Bonny Village.
- 10Activate the Bonny Village Site of Grace before continuing east or north.
Recommended order
This route secures Dane’s weapon before the player moves too far into the DLC and also establishes the eastern road network.
---
For most players, the efficient order is
- 01Highroad Cross
- 02Collect Monk’s Missive and May the Best Win
- 03Moorth Ruins Site of Grace
- 04Dryleaf Dane duel
- 05Surface item sweep
- 06Underground passage
- 07Bonny Village
- 08O Mother gesture
- 09Eastern Scadu Altus roads
- 10Shadow Keep or the Finger Ruins, depending on progression
Highroad Cross
Highroad Cross is the western approach and the place where the player acquires the gesture and missive needed for Dane’s Moorth encounter. The route between the two locations is straightforward and should be completed before leaving the area.
Bonny Village
Bonny Village is the direct underground continuation of Moorth Ruins. It is a separate location with a jar-person theme, its own Site of Grace and additional collectibles. Its northern side contains the O Mother gesture, which is later used to open a hidden route in the northern part of the Realm of Shadow.
Church District and Shadow Keep
After travelling through Bonny Village, the road continues through eastern Scadu Altus towards the Church District and the eastern side of Shadow Keep. This route is important because it allows the player to approach Shadow Keep from a direction that is not obvious from the main western entrance.
The Moorth-to-Bonny route therefore has regional significance even for players who are not interested in Dane’s equipment.
Ruined Forge of Starfall Past
The Ruined Forge of Starfall Past lies south-west of Moorth along the Moorth Highway. It is a separate dungeon with its own enemies, puzzles and reward. The proximity explains why maps and guides often display the two locations together, but it should not be treated as a subarea of Moorth Ruins.
---
Moorth Ruins is one of the clearest examples of Hornsent architecture being physically erased by the instability of the Realm of Shadow.
The Shattered Stone Talisman describes linchpin stones as spiritual anchors that hold the ground in place and restrain earthquakes. When one was broken, the surrounding town fell into the earth. One account even claimed that the moon itself had fallen. The collapsed streets and buried buildings at Moorth visually express that legend without requiring a conventional cutscene or exposition-heavy explanation.
The location also contrasts two different ideas of discipline:
His placement beside the ruins is therefore thematically appropriate. The player crosses a settlement destroyed by lost stability and then faces a warrior whose strength depends on balance, timing and control.
This interpretation is supported by the location’s environmental design, but the game does not state every symbolic connection directly. It should be treated as an informed reading rather than a confirmed developer explanation.
---
Dryleaf Dane
The main progression-sensitive content is Dane’s duel. The necessary gesture is obtained at Highroad Cross. If the player reaches Moorth Ruins without it, Dane remains unresponsive.
Because Shadow of the Erdtree contains several NPC progression triggers that change after major events, it is safest to perform the duel when first visiting the ruins. This avoids having to determine whether a later quest state has moved or disabled the encounter.
Miquella’s Cross and blessing items
The Scadutree Fragment and Revered Spirit Ash are fixed exploration rewards rather than random drops. They are permanently missable only in the ordinary sense that the player can leave the area without collecting them. They can normally be obtained later unless a specific late-game state changes the relevant world object.
O Mother
The O Mother gesture is not in Moorth Ruins. It is in Bonny Village. Collecting it early is recommended because it is needed for a later secret route and is easy to overlook among the settlement’s ruined buildings.
---
Bonny Village, treated separately
---
Is Moorth Ruins a dungeon?
No. It is an open-world ruin location with an underground passage. It has a Site of Grace and a special NPC duel, but it does not function like a sealed legacy dungeon.
Is Bonny Village part of Moorth Ruins?
No. Bonny Village is a separate named location reached through Moorth’s underground passage. It should be listed independently even though the two areas are directly connected.
Where is Dryleaf Dane?
He is east of the Moorth Ruins Site of Grace. He will not begin the encounter through normal dialogue. Use the May the Best Win gesture.
What do I get for defeating Dane?
You receive Dryleaf Arts and Dane’s Hat.
Where is the O Mother gesture?
It is in Bonny Village, on a kneeling corpse near a twisted tree at the northern edge of the settlement. It is not inside the surface ruins.
Is there a shop or merchant at Moorth Ruins?
No functional shop or merchant is verified within the location. Nearby NPC merchants and services belong to other areas and should not be attributed to Moorth Ruins.
Does Moorth Ruins have a main boss?
It has no conventional dungeon boss. Dryleaf Dane is a special duel and functions as the location’s principal named combat encounter.
---
This guide treats Moorth Ruins, its underground collapse and the route to the entrance of Bonny Village as the relevant connected scope. It does not merge Bonny Village, Bonny Gaol, the Ruined Forge of Starfall Past or Shadow Keep into the same location.
The principal location directories agree on the major grace, Dane encounter, enemy families and headline rewards, but minor item categorisation can vary between databases. In particular, minor drops such as Golden Horn Tender and Shadow Sunflower are not always presented consistently as fixed pickups, harvestables or local loot. They are therefore listed cautiously rather than assigned unsupported acquisition methods. The available evidence also does not establish a complete canonical directory of every decorative building, storefront remnant or unnamed background structure. This guide should be treated as a researched guide rather than a claim of exhaustively verified architectural completeness.
