About this guide
Spoiler warning: This guide covers the major areas, bosses, NPCs, quest interactions, routes and secrets in Shadow Keep, including its connections to Scaduview, the Church District and the Ancient Ruins of Rauh.
Overview
Shadow Keep is the principal legacy dungeon of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. It stands in northern Scadu Altus, directly north of the Highroad Cross area, and serves as the military stronghold of Messmer the Impaler. The keep is not a single compact castle. It is a large, vertically organised complex made up of a main fortress, a flooded eastern district, the Specimen Storehouse and several exterior passages leading into other regions.
The location is both a major story dungeon and a transport hub. Its western route leads towards the Ancient Ruins of Rauh, while its upper and rear routes open into Scaduview, the Hinterland, the Finger Ruins of Miyr and the Scadutree Base. The Church District also contains one of the most important hidden route puzzles in the DLC.
Shadow Keep is therefore best treated as a connected dungeon complex rather than merely the area surrounding the fight with Messmer. The following guide includes the main gate, Church District, Specimen Storehouse, Storehouse Loft and the keep’s rear connections. Scaduview itself is treated as a neighbouring region, although its access routes from Shadow Keep are included.
---
Shadow Keep, Main Gate
The Main Gate is the obvious frontal entrance. It contains the first major boss, a Site of Grace and the lower fortress route. After entering, the player moves through military rooms, stairways, an armoury and a dining hall occupied by Fire Knights.
The early section is designed to establish the keep’s vertical structure. Several apparent dead ends are actually drops into lower courtyards or routes through side rooms. The glowing tree in the first courtyard is a useful navigation landmark.
Important features
The dining hall contains two dangerous Fire Knights, including one equipped with a greatbow. They can be separated, but fighting both in the narrow room is risky. The area also contains Golden Vow and a Shadow Realm Rune.
---
Shadow Keep, Church District
The Church District lies to the east of the main fortress. It is initially flooded, leaving the roofs and upper structures accessible while the lower streets are submerged. The area is reached from the eastern side of Scadu Altus rather than through the main gate.
The district is one of the keep’s most demanding traversal sections. Much of the route involves crossing rooftops, avoiding fire and dropping onto narrow platforms. Progress eventually leads to a mechanism that drains the water, exposing the lower church area and opening the way towards the upper Storehouse.
Main characteristics
The Church District has a different atmosphere from the main fortress. The keep’s military order gives way to abandoned religious structures, dead trees, drowned courtyards and unstable rooftops. Its layout is deliberately confusing because the player sees inaccessible buildings from several angles before learning how to reach them.
Church District route
The Church District connects to the Storehouse’s upper levels rather than to its ordinary ground-floor entrance. This is why players who enter through the Main Gate can initially see areas that appear unreachable.
---
Church District route
- 01Approach from the east of Shadow Keep.
- 02Cross the rooftops carefully, avoiding the flooded ground.
- 03Use the roof structures and pillars to reach the drainage area.
- 04Activate the water-draining mechanism.
- 05Return to the exposed lower district.
- 06Explore the newly accessible church and underground sections.
- 07Continue upwards into the Storehouse route.
Specimen Storehouse
The Specimen Storehouse is the keep’s most distinctive subarea. It is a vast vertical archive filled with preserved creatures, corpses, suspended remains, shelves and wooden walkways. The Storehouse was used to catalogue specimens associated with Messmer’s campaign and the wider history of the Realm of Shadow.
Unlike the main fortress, which is largely horizontal, the Storehouse is built around a central vertical shaft. Progress depends on moving between balconies, shelves, ladders, lifts and the backs of enormous suspended specimens.
Main Storehouse levels
The Storehouse is commonly navigated through named Sites of Grace and floor designations:
The exact naming of intermediate platforms can vary between guides, but the practical division is consistent: lower Storehouse floors, central shelves and balconies, the Back Section, and the upper Loft route.
Key characters
Sir Ansbach is found in a reading area on the lower Storehouse route. Redmane Freyja appears on an upper floor. Both are connected to the DLC’s larger NPC storyline and should be spoken to repeatedly until their dialogue is exhausted.
The Secret Rite Scroll is found on a Storehouse route reached after passing through an upper exterior section. It is important for Sir Ansbach’s progression.
Storehouse mechanism
At the upper levels, the player reaches a large suspended specimen and a lever controlling the central arrangement. Pulling the lever moves the hanging structures and creates new platforms. This is the Storehouse’s main structural puzzle.
The Storehouse route is easy to misread. If a platform appears too high, look for a hanging specimen, statue or moved display that can be used as a bridge. The dungeon expects the player to revisit earlier viewpoints after activating the mechanism.
---
Storehouse mechanism: A reliable sequence is
- 01Reach the upper Storehouse balconies.
- 02Find the large suspended specimen.
- 03Cross onto its body.
- 04Collect the Revered Spirit Ash above or near the suspended structure.
- 05Pull the mechanism that moves the display.
- 06Return to the Storehouse, Seventh Floor Site of Grace.
- 07Use the newly positioned platforms to reach the higher route.
- 08Continue towards the Dark Chamber.
Storehouse Loft
The Storehouse Loft is the high exterior and roof-level section of the complex. It contains long wooden walkways, rafters, bats and exposed platforms overlooking the Storehouse. This route eventually leads to the upper keep and the Dark Chamber.
The Loft is also important because it links the Storehouse to the rear of Shadow Keep. From the back route, the player can reach the Shadow Keep, Back Gate Site of Grace and choose between Scaduview-related destinations.
---
Main Gate route
The main route begins at Highroad Cross in Scadu Altus.
This is the intended story route and the simplest entrance for players who want to reach Messmer.
Main Gate route: steps
- 01Travel north through the large Messmer military camp.
- 02Enter the lift at the keep’s front approach.
- 03Activate the Shadow Keep, Main Gate Site of Grace.
- 04Defeat or pass the Golden Hippopotamus.
- 05Enter the central fortress.
- 06Explore the lower courtyard, armoury and dining hall.
- 07Continue towards the lift leading to the Specimen Storehouse.
Church District route
The Church District is approached from the eastern side of Scadu Altus. It is not reached by simply opening a door inside the Main Gate.
Rear route and Scaduview
The rear route becomes accessible through the upper Storehouse and Loft. The Shadow Keep, Back Gate Site of Grace is a major junction.
Scaduview guides identify the Back Gate as the entry point for both the Commander Gaius side and the Hinterland side of the region.
---
Golden Hippopotamus
The Golden Hippopotamus is found immediately beyond the Main Gate. It is the entrance boss for the main fortress route.
Its attacks combine lunges, bites, body slams and golden thorn-like projections. Staying directly in front of it for too long is dangerous, but moving too far away can provoke powerful charges. The safest general approach is to punish its recovery after a missed lunge or body slam.
Defeating it grants access to the main fortress and its Site of Grace.
Messmer the Impaler
Messmer is located at the top of the keep, beyond the Dark Chamber Entrance. He is a major story boss and one of the principal figures of the DLC.
Messmer’s Kindling is later used in the DLC’s main progression. The boss is the culmination of the central Shadow Keep route, although the dungeon’s other branches remain valuable after his defeat.
Commander Gaius
Commander Gaius is not inside the central keep, but his arena is reached from the Shadow Keep, Back Gate. He belongs to the Scaduview side of the complex and should be treated as a neighbouring encounter rather than a Shadow Keep interior boss.
He fights while mounted and uses gravity-based attacks. The arena gives room to manoeuvre, but his charge patterns can be difficult to read. The fight is optional for the main Shadow Keep route.
Fire Knights
Fire Knights are the keep’s elite soldiers. They commonly use flaming weapons, ranged fire attacks, greatbows, shields or large swords. They are more dangerous than ordinary Messmer soldiers and often guard important rooms or shortcuts.
Their most dangerous feature is their ability to combine pressure at close range with fire attacks that punish healing. Isolating them is preferable to fighting them in pairs.
Other recurring enemies
Verified enemy types found in the complex include:
Enemy placement is fixed within the dungeon, although ordinary drops are not guaranteed on every kill.
---
Sir Ansbach
Sir Ansbach is found in the Specimen Storehouse, seated in a reading area. He is a major DLC NPC associated with the conflict surrounding Miquella, Mohg and the other followers gathered in the Realm of Shadow.
Speak to him whenever his dialogue changes. The Secret Rite Scroll, found in the Storehouse, is relevant to his progression. His storyline also intersects with Redmane Freyja and late-game events.
Redmane Freyja
Redmane Freyja appears on the upper Storehouse route. She is connected to the wider group of Miquella’s followers and has separate dialogue from Ansbach.
Her position and available dialogue can change as the player progresses through the DLC. If you are following her quest, speak to her before moving on after major story developments.
Hornsent and other quest-associated characters
Hornsent is not a permanent resident of the keep, but his storyline is connected with the events around Messmer. Depending on the player’s earlier choices and progression, summon signs and later encounters may appear in or around the main boss route.
Because DLC questlines can advance when major events occur, it is safest to:
---
The following directory consolidates the named rewards specifically identified in the researched Shadow Keep walkthrough. It is not a claim that every consumable, crafting material or random enemy drop has been catalogued.
Hornsent and other quest-associated characters: steps
- 01Speak to all available followers before entering the keep.
- 02Exhaust dialogue after reaching the keep.
- 03Check Ansbach and Freyja in the Storehouse.
- 04Check for summon signs before fighting Messmer.
- 05Revisit the characters after defeating major bosses.
Main Gate and main fortress
Specimen Storehouse and Loft
The major Storehouse rewards include the Secret Rite Scroll, a Storehouse Cross Message and a Revered Spirit Ash. The upper route also contains a Scadutree Fragment.
Boss rewards
Messmer the Impaler
The Remembrance can be exchanged for Messmer-themed rewards through the usual Remembrance system.

Recommended first visit
1. Prepare before entering
Shadow Keep is a late-midgame DLC area with powerful enemies. Bring:
2. Enter through the Main Gate
Activate the Site of Grace before committing to the boss. The Golden Hippopotamus is close to the entrance and can catch new arrivals before they have explored the courtyard.
3. Explore the first courtyard
After the boss, inspect the glowing-tree courtyard and side rooms. The Main-gauche and Talisman of Lord’s Bestowal are available in this early section.
4. Clear the dining hall
The dining hall contains two elite enemies. Pulling one away from the other makes the fight substantially safer. Collect the nearby Golden Vow and Shadow Realm Rune.
5. Open the shortcut
Take the long staircase and open the doors leading back towards the Main Gate Site of Grace. This prevents a full replay of the opening section after death.
6. Enter the Specimen Storehouse
Continue through the fortress until reaching the lift to the Storehouse. Activate the Storehouse, First Floor Site of Grace.
7. Visit Sir Ansbach
Find Ansbach in the reading area and exhaust his dialogue. Do not rush directly to the highest floor without checking him.
8. Search the Storehouse lower and central levels
Collect the Storehouse Cross Message and the nearby Scadutree Fragment. Explore side balconies before ascending, since several rewards are placed away from the critical path.
9. Find the Secret Rite Scroll
Use the upper exterior route and return inside near the bats. The Secret Rite Scroll is located along this route. Take it back to Ansbach when appropriate for his quest.
10. Activate the Storehouse mechanism
Reach the upper levels, cross the suspended specimen and pull the mechanism. This changes the position of the hanging structures and opens the route higher into the keep.
11. Speak to Redmane Freyja
Redmane Freyja is found on the upper Storehouse route. Exhaust her dialogue and check her again after major progression.
12. Reach the Dark Chamber
Use the repositioned platforms and climb towards the Dark Chamber Entrance. Prepare before opening the doors, since Messmer begins immediately beyond them.
13. Defeat Messmer
After the fight, collect Messmer’s Kindling and the Remembrance of the Impaler. Rest and return to the Storehouse if you still need to explore the dungeon.
14. Complete the western route
From the lower Storehouse, take the route through the long pot-filled passage towards the West Rampart and Viaduct Minor Tower. This leads into the Ancient Ruins of Rauh, not deeper into the keep.
---
The Church District is best completed separately from the main fortress.
The Church District route is one of the clearest examples of Shadow Keep’s progression-state design. The same location changes substantially before and after the water is drained.
---
14. Complete the western route
- 01Approach the district from eastern Scadu Altus.
- 02Stay on the rooftops. Do not drop into the flood unless the route clearly requires it.
- 03Watch for Fire Knights and bats on narrow platforms.
- 04Use the roofline to reach the drainage mechanism.
- 05Drain the district.
- 06Return to the lower level and inspect the exposed buildings.
- 07Search the church and side rooms before ascending.
- 08Follow the newly available upper route into the Storehouse.
- 09At the rear section, find the statue and hidden passage associated with the O Mother gesture.
- 10Use the gesture at the relevant statue to open the route towards the Hinterland.
The Great Rune event
Approaching or progressing through Shadow Keep is associated with the DLC’s major early progression changes. Several follower NPCs can move after Miquella’s Great Rune breaks. This may alter where characters are found and which dialogue is available.
Messmer and NPC summons
Some NPC questlines provide summon signs or dialogue around the Messmer encounter. Their availability depends on earlier quest progress and choices. If you want the greatest chance of seeing all relevant interactions, check outside the boss arena before entering.
Ansbach’s scroll
The Secret Rite Scroll is important to Sir Ansbach’s storyline. If you are following his quest, take it from the Storehouse and return to him before advancing too far into the DLC’s later stages.
O Mother gesture
The hidden route from Shadow Keep to the Hinterland requires the O Mother gesture. This is not part of the normal Messmer route and is easy to overlook. Keep the gesture available before leaving the Church District and Back Gate area.
---
Vertical design
Shadow Keep frequently places the correct route above or below the player rather than directly ahead. When blocked:
Fire Knights
Do not fight Fire Knights next to another elite enemy if it can be avoided. Their ranged attacks can stagger the player while the other knight closes in.
Flooded Church District
The flood is not simply environmental decoration. It conceals the lower route and changes the location’s traversal logic. Avoid blind drops until the water has been drained.
Bats and narrow platforms
The Storehouse Loft contains several sections where bats can knock the player from a walkway. Ranged attacks, shields or a quick aerial strike can prevent deaths caused by being pushed from the rafters.
Long-distance falls
Many apparent shortcuts in the Storehouse are lethal drops. If a hanging specimen is visible below, it may be a safe landing surface, but ordinary wooden walkways often are not.

Subareas and connected locations
Characters
Leda is associated with the wider follower storyline rather than functioning as a permanent Shadow Keep resident. Hornsent’s presence depends on progression and quest state.
Characters
Bosses
Commander Gaius is listed here because the Back Gate is his access point, although his arena belongs to Scaduview rather than the keep interior.
Bosses
Sites of Grace
The exact Church District Grace names should be checked against an in-game map or current area database when producing a strict item-by-item checklist. The available sources consulted here confirm the Church District as a distinct branch but do not expose a complete, reliable Grace directory.
Major rewards
---
Shadow Keep is Messmer’s seat of power and a monument to the violence of his crusade. The fortress combines military architecture, religious buildings and a grotesque archive of preserved specimens. These functions are not separated cleanly. Soldiers guard a place that is also a museum, laboratory, prison and sacred site.
The Specimen Storehouse suggests that Messmer’s forces were not merely occupying the Realm of Shadow. They were collecting, studying and preserving its peoples and creatures. The building’s suspended bodies turn the dungeon into a physical record of conquest.
The Church District provides a contrasting image. Its flooded state implies neglect or deliberate submersion, while the surviving religious structures connect the keep to the older spiritual history of the region. The route through the district eventually reveals that Shadow Keep is not an isolated castle. It is built into a wider network of sacred and political sites extending towards the Hinterland and Scadutree Base.
The dungeon’s layout also reflects the DLC’s story structure. The Main Gate presents the public military face of Messmer’s regime. The Storehouse reveals its hidden practices. The Church District exposes its relationship with older traditions. The upper routes finally lead to Messmer himself.
---
Major rewards
Is Shadow Keep the same as the Specimen Storehouse?
No. The Specimen Storehouse is a major subarea attached to Shadow Keep. Guides often group both under the Shadow Keep heading, but they are distinct sections with different layouts, enemies and routes.
Can I reach Messmer without exploring the Church District?
Yes. The Main Gate and Storehouse route is the normal route to Messmer. The Church District is an alternative branch with its own rewards, the drainage puzzle and a route towards the upper Storehouse and Hinterland.
Is Commander Gaius inside Shadow Keep?
No. He is reached from Shadow Keep, Back Gate, but his arena belongs to Scaduview.
What does defeating Messmer unlock?
Messmer drops the Remembrance of the Impaler and gives Messmer’s Kindling. His defeat also advances the DLC’s central story.
Where is the Secret Rite Scroll?
It is in the Specimen Storehouse on an upper route reached after progressing through the Storehouse and its exterior sections. It is relevant to Sir Ansbach.
How do I reach the Hinterland?
Use the rear section of Shadow Keep and the route associated with the O Mother gesture. The gesture is needed to open the hidden passage.
