Nokstella, Eternal City

Nokstella, Eternal City is a vast underground ruin in Elden Ring, reached through the Ainsel River and connected to Ranni's quest.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • Nokstella is not Nokron They are separate Eternal Cities in different underground rivers. Nokron lies in Siofra River, while Nokstella lies in Ainsel River.
  • The city is an optional area, but it is effectively required for the full progression of Ranni’s quest and the Age of Stars ending.
  • The main city route is vertical You enter at the lower eastern side, climb through streets and buildings, cross the large bridge, then descend through a lift to Nokstella Waterfall Basin.
  • The most important rewards are Moon of Nokstella, Ghost-Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearing [2], Nightmaiden & Swordstress Puppets, Archer Ashes, Great Ghost Glovewort, and Golden Seed.
  • The city’s characteristic enemies are electrified Silver Tears, Nox Swordstresses, Nox Monks, giant rolling metal balls, ants and snails.
  • The Baleful Shadow is not in the city proper It appears in Nokstella Waterfall Basin, after the player has progressed far enough in Ranni’s quest.

About this guide

Scope: Elden Ring base game. This guide treats Nokstella, Eternal City as the city subregion itself, while separating the connected Ainsel River Main, Nokstella Waterfall Basin, Lake of Rot, and Grand Cloister. These places form one practical route, but they are distinct map areas and should not be collapsed into a single location.

Overview

Nokstella is a buried Nox city in the western part of Ainsel River Main. It is reached through the sending gate at the top of Renna’s Rise, normally during Ranni’s quest, and functions as both a substantial optional legacy-dungeon-like area and a major route towards the Lake of Rot. The city contains a dense collection of upgrade materials, Spirit Ashes, a legendary talisman, the Ghost-Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearing [2], and the next stage of Ranni’s quest.

Boundaries and hierarchy

Nokstella is a subregion of Ainsel River, rather than the name of the whole underground route. The surrounding hierarchy is:

The city itself begins after travelling through Ainsel River Main and reaching the large staircase leading into the Nox settlement. The lower river route beside the city can be used to bypass much of the urban section, but doing so misses most of Nokstella’s rewards. The lift at the far end of the city leads to Nokstella Waterfall Basin, which is a separate subarea rather than merely another city district.

The following places are neighbours, not parts of Nokstella proper:

This distinction matters because the city’s item lists, enemies and quest events are often mixed with those of the adjoining route in general walkthroughs.

Overview

Nokstella is an enormous underground city built beneath the Lands Between by the Nox. Its architecture is recognisably urban, with broad stairways, elevated streets, bridges, roofed halls and imposing civic buildings. Unlike a living capital, however, it is almost entirely deserted. The remaining inhabitants are hostile Nox warriors, Silver Tears and other subterranean creatures.

The city’s most striking visual feature is its false night sky. The Nox were associated with an artificial or lost celestial order, and the Moon of Nokstella describes the city’s lost black moon as having once guided countless stars. The talisman was made in the moon’s image and was regarded as a treasure of the city.

The area’s enemies reinforce that history. Silver Tears are shapeless lifeforms capable of imitating humanoid forms, while Nox Swordstresses and Nox Monks represent the surviving martial and religious culture of the city. The city is also infested by giant ants and skeletal snails, suggesting that the abandoned streets have become part of the underground ecosystem.

Nokstella is best understood as both

  1. 01
A reward-rich optional dungeon, with high-level smithing materials and Spirit Ashes.
  2. 02
A quest corridor, carrying Ranni’s story from Ainsel River Main to the Lake of Rot.

Main access through Renna’s Rise

The intended entrance is the sending gate at the top of Renna’s Rise, the tower north of Ranni’s Rise in western Liurnia. The gate is initially inactive. It becomes available after sufficient progress in Ranni’s quest, normally after the player has:

Ranni then opens the route through Renna’s Rise. The sending gate deposits the player in Ainsel River Main, near Miniature Ranni. The player must travel through the river and the Uhl Palace area before reaching Nokstella.

The sending gate’s route is not the same as the earlier Ainsel River entrance accessed from the Ainsel River Well in Liurnia. The well route reaches a different part of the underground river and does not replace the Renna’s Rise route for reaching the city.

Main access through Renna’s Rise: steps

  1. 01
    Met Ranni at Ranni’s Rise.
  2. 02
    Accepted her service.
  3. 03
    Defeated Starscourge Radahn.
  4. 04
Entered Nokron through the meteor crater.
  5. 05
    Retrieved the Fingerslayer Blade.
  6. 06
    Returned the blade to Ranni.

The route from the sending gate is

  1. 01
Loot the coffin-like remains near the arrival point to obtain Miniature Ranni.
  2. 02
Rest at the nearby Site of Grace.
  3. 03
Select the option to speak to Miniature Ranni repeatedly. Ranni’s dialogue is important for the quest.
  4. 04
    Continue through Ainsel River Main.
  5. 05
Pass the Malformed Star area and the ant tunnels.
  6. 06
Follow the river towards the eastern side of the city.
  7. 07
Climb the broad staircase into Nokstella.

Short route and full exploration route

Once Nokstella is reached, the player can follow the lower river path and proceed relatively quickly towards the city’s lower exit. This is useful if the immediate objective is to continue Ranni’s quest.

For a complete clear, climb into the city and explore the buildings before descending. The upper route contains nearly all of Nokstella’s major rewards, including the legendary talisman and the Bell Bearing.

---

1. Reach the city Site of Grace

From the Ainsel River Main route, climb the stairs and activate Nokstella, Eternal City Site of Grace. This is the main checkpoint and the most useful return point for clearing the upper city.

Electrified Silver Tears can explode or discharge electricity when defeated. They are particularly dangerous when several are grouped together, since one death can damage nearby enemies and the player.

2. Sweep the lower streets

From the Site of Grace, explore the ruins and side paths before climbing too far.

The Swordstress mounted on a giant ant is one of the more dangerous early encounters. The ant’s movement makes the fight awkward in confined streets, so it is usually safer to separate the rider from nearby Silver Tears and attack from the side.

3. Find the Bell Bearing building

A side building near the first major streets contains several Silver Tears and a chest holding:

Giving this Bell Bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold unlocks the purchase of higher-level Ghost Glovewort, allowing Spirit Ashes to be upgraded further.

The building is easy to overlook because it is not placed directly on the main staircase route. Treat the first section of Nokstella as a search area rather than immediately following the road upwards.

4. Cross the bridge

The main path continues towards a large bridge and a series of ascending streets. The bridge is watched by Silver Tears and leads towards the city’s more imposing buildings.

The rolling metal balls are among Nokstella’s signature hazards. They follow fixed paths and can kill a player caught in the open. Use pillars, doorways and wall edges as cover rather than trying to outrun them in a straight line.

5. Collect the Spirit Ashes and Ant’s Skull Plate

A side building contains a Nox Swordstress guarding:

This is a large shield associated with the subterranean ant enemies. It is a distinct equipment reward, not a shop item or random drop.

The Stonesword Key requirement should be considered before entering the city if the player wants to complete the area in one visit. The puppets are especially relevant to players following a puppet- or Nox-themed collection route.

These are found behind or near one of the city structures along the upper route. They are separate from the Nightmaiden & Swordstress Puppets and should not be treated as a second location for the same reward.

6. Take the dangerous building route

A cautious method is to enter, immediately retreat into the doorway, and draw enemies into the street. This prevents the rolling balls from trapping the player in the centre of a room.

The Somber Stone is in a chest and is not a random drop.

7. Claim the Moon of Nokstella

The city’s most important reward is in the final major building on the upper route. The entrance is defended by:

After defeating them, open the chest beneath the empty throne to obtain:

This is one of the game’s legendary talismans. It increases memory slots, making it particularly valuable for spellcasters and incantation users. The empty throne and the talisman’s description provide some of the clearest environmental evidence that Nokstella was once a powerful Nox centre.

8. Descend to the Waterfall Basin

After collecting the Moon of Nokstella, leave through the side exit and take the lift down. A lower platform contains:

Activate the Waterfall Basin Site of Grace before continuing. This marks the boundary between the city and the adjoining subarea.

---

Ainsel River Main

Ainsel River Main is the approach to Nokstella, not part of the city. It contains the arrival point from Renna’s Rise, Miniature Ranni, giant ants, claymen, Glovewort and a Malformed Star.

The Malformed Star is positioned before the city approach and can be fought or bypassed. The area also contains the route to the Wing of Astel, although that reward belongs to Ainsel River Main rather than Nokstella.

Nokstella Waterfall Basin

The Waterfall Basin lies below the city and is reached by lift. It contains a narrow river route, Basilisks and the Baleful Shadow encounter associated with Ranni’s quest.

The Basin is not simply a lower city street. It has its own Site of Grace and its own enemy grouping.

Lake of Rot

From Nokstella Waterfall Basin, continue through the tunnel and defeat the Baleful Shadow when it appears. The route then descends towards the Lake of Rot Shoreside Site of Grace.

The lake is a separate area dominated by Scarlet Rot. It eventually leads to the Grand Cloister and, after the coffin route, to Astel’s arena.

Grand Cloister

The Grand Cloister is beyond the Lake of Rot. It contains the coffin needed to continue towards Astel. Although many walkthroughs describe the entire sequence as “Nokstella”, the Grand Cloister is not part of the city.

---

Nox

The Nox are the original inhabitants and owners of Nokstella. In the present game they appear primarily as hostile:

Their armour descriptions associate them with banishment underground after provoking the Greater Will. Nokstella’s architecture, artificial sky and silver-life experiments all connect the city to the wider Nox civilisation.

Miniature Ranni

Miniature Ranni is found in Ainsel River Main near the sending-gate arrival point, not in the city streets. Nevertheless, she is central to Nokstella’s progression.

At the Ainsel River Main, Nokstella and Nokstella Waterfall Basin Sites of Grace, the player can speak to the doll. The player must usually choose the dialogue option several times before Ranni responds. This advances the quest and eventually causes the Baleful Shadow to appear in the Waterfall Basin.

Baleful Shadow

The Baleful Shadow is a quest enemy rather than an ordinary Nokstella resident. It appears in Nokstella Waterfall Basin after the Miniature Ranni sequence has been advanced.

The key opens the locked chest in the Grand Library of Raya Lucaria after Rennala’s encounter. That chest contains:

The Dark Moon Ring is needed later in the Lake of Rot and Astel sequence to continue Ranni’s quest.

Named-character directory

There are no ordinary friendly residents, vendors or permanent shopkeepers in Nokstella.

Enemy directory

Nokstella Waterfall Basin

The exact placement and group composition can vary by route, but these are the named enemy types associated with the city and its immediate connected sections. The city’s general enemy listing includes Nox, Silver Tears, giant ants and skeletal snails.

Electrified Silver Tears

Most Silver Tears in Nokstella are more dangerous than the common forms encountered in Nokron because many discharge electricity or explode on death. Avoid standing among several of them, especially near staircases and narrow buildings.

A practical approach is to

  1. 01
Pull one or two enemies away from the group.
  2. 02
Kill them at range if possible.
  3. 03
Wait for the electrical effect to finish.
  4. 04
Continue only after the area is clear.

Rolling metal balls

The metal balls follow predictable paths but are difficult to fight in cramped rooms. They can be destroyed, but there is no need to engage every one. Use the surrounding pillars and doorframes to break their line of approach.

The ball in the enclosed building is especially dangerous because it can trap the player against the walls. Enter only after identifying the available cover.

Basilisks and Death

The Waterfall Basin contains Basilisks that release Death clouds. These should be treated as a different hazard from the city’s electrical enemies. Do not allow the cloud to surround you in the narrow river passage.

The city contains fixed upgrade materials and crafting resources, including:

The Bell Bearing is especially valuable because it changes what can be purchased at Roundtable Hold. It is not itself a consumable upgrade material.

Sites of Grace

The first Site of Grace is in the city’s eastern lower section, after the player climbs up from Ainsel River Main. The second is at the bottom of the lift beyond the city, in the Waterfall Basin.

Sites of Grace

Shops and services

Any apparent doorways, stalls or building fronts are environmental scenery rather than confirmed businesses. The city’s rewards are found in chests, on corpses, behind imp seals and from enemies.

---

Nokstella’s most important progression state is whether the player has begun Ranni’s quest and spoken to Miniature Ranni.

If the quest has not been advanced

The player can still explore much of Nokstella and collect its fixed rewards. However, the Baleful Shadow may not appear in the Waterfall Basin.

If Miniature Ranni has been activated

Speak to the miniature at the relevant Site of Grace until it responds. This advances Ranni’s quest and sets up the Baleful Shadow encounter.

After defeating Baleful Shadow

The player receives the Discarded Palace Key. It opens Rennala’s chest in Raya Lucaria’s Grand Library, producing the Dark Moon Ring. The ring is needed to pass the later barrier in the Lake of Rot and complete the route to Astel.

Missability

The city’s ordinary loot is generally available whenever the player can enter. The important progression warning is not a conventional permanent miss, but quest sequencing:

Ranni’s quest can be progressed in different orders, but dialogue and encounter availability depend on the player having advanced the relevant stages.

---

Nokstella belongs to the same underground civilisation as Nokron and the Nameless Eternal City, but it is not identical to either. The Nox were driven underground after angering the Greater Will, and Nokstella’s false night and silver lifeforms reflect the civilisation’s attempt to create or reproduce a celestial order.

The Moon of Nokstella is the clearest direct link between the city and its lost cosmology. It describes a black moon that guided countless stars and was revered as Nokstella’s treasure. The talisman is therefore both a gameplay reward and a compact statement of the city’s former religious or astronomical importance.

The Nox’s relationship with artificial life is visible throughout the area:

The city also contrasts with Nokron. Nokron’s most important quest object is the Fingerslayer Blade, while Nokstella preserves the Moon of Nokstella and the urban environment associated with the Nox’s celestial traditions. They are sister cities in the same broad civilisation, not two names for one location.

---

Is Nokstella the same as Nokron?

No. Nokron is in Siofra River beneath Limgrave and contains the Fingerslayer Blade route. Nokstella is in Ainsel River and is reached through Renna’s Rise.

Can I skip Nokstella?

You can bypass much of the city and continue towards the Waterfall Basin, but doing so means missing important Spirit Ashes, the Bell Bearing, the Moon of Nokstella and several upgrade materials.

Where is the Baleful Shadow?

It is in Nokstella Waterfall Basin, not in the upper city. It appears after progressing Miniature Ranni’s dialogue and the relevant stage of Ranni’s quest.

Where is the Moon of Nokstella?

It is in a chest beneath the empty throne in the final major building along the upper city route. Defeat the Nox Swordstress and the transforming Silver Tears guarding the room.

Is there a merchant in Nokstella?

No confirmed merchant operates in the city. The Nox inhabitants are hostile and there are no functional shops or services.

What does Ghost-Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearing [2] unlock?

It allows the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold to sell higher-level Ghost Glovewort, making it easier to upgrade Spirit Ashes.

Does Nokstella lead to the Lake of Rot?

Yes, through the connected Waterfall Basin. The full route is:

Nokstella → Nokstella Waterfall Basin → Lake of Rot → Grand Cloister → Astel, Naturalborn of the Void

The Lake of Rot and Grand Cloister remain separate locations.
