About this guide

Scope: Elden Ring base game. Spoilers: This guide covers the dungeon’s enemies, loot, route and boss.

Overview

Old Altus Tunnel is a compact but rewarding mining dungeon in the western part of Altus Plateau. It is separate from the similarly named Altus Tunnel, which lies elsewhere in the region and contains the Crystalian boss encounter. Old Altus Tunnel is an old crystal-mining site still worked by miners, guarded by Leyndell soldiers, knights and dogs, and ultimately occupied by a Stonedigger Troll.

The dungeon is particularly worthwhile for upgrade-focused characters. It contains a large collection of Smithing Stones and Somber Smithing Stones, the Troll’s Hammer, the Boltdrake Talisman +1, crafting materials and a boss reward weapon. Entry is sealed by an imp statue fog wall requiring two Stonesword Keys.

Old Altus Tunnel is not a branch of Altus Tunnel, Perfumer’s Grotto or any other mine. It is its own minor dungeon with its own Site of Grace, internal route and boss arena.

Regional placement

Old Altus Tunnel belongs to Altus Plateau, not Mt Gelmir. Some guides describe its approach using nearby western routes, but the dungeon itself is recorded as a central-western Altus Plateau location. It can be reached on foot or on horseback from the surrounding plateau.

The entrance is a short ride northeast of Erdtree-Gazing Hill. Follow the nearby road and watch the western cliff wall for the imp-sealed doorway. The entrance is not a large surface ruin, so it is easy to ride past if you are following the road rather than checking the rock face.

Not included

The following are separate locations and should not be merged into Old Altus Tunnel:

The similar names are the main source of confusion. Altus Tunnel has different enemies, a different layout and a different boss, while Old Altus Tunnel ends with the Stonedigger Troll.

Named locations directory

Only Old Altus Tunnel and its Site of Grace are part of the dungeon proper. The other names are neighbouring or similarly named places and are included here for boundary clarity.

---

The entrance is protected by an imp statue barrier. You must spend two Stonesword Keys to dissolve the fog wall. Once open, the first shaft contains a lift and several ledges that can be explored before reaching the bottom.

Old Altus Tunnel does not require a story boss, Great Rune or quest state to enter. The practical restriction is having two Stonesword Keys and being able to survive a mid-game dungeon.

Recommended approach

The dungeon’s recorded map position is approximately X 2788, Y 3059 on Gamer Guides’ map database. This is a map reference rather than an in-game coordinate system and is not needed for ordinary navigation.

Recommended approach: steps

  1. 01
    Travel to Erdtree-Gazing Hill.
  2. 02
    Ride north-east along the road.
  3. 03
Keep the western cliff face in view.
  4. 04
Look for the imp-sealed mine entrance.
  5. 05
    Use two Stonesword Keys.
  6. 06
Enter and activate the Old Altus Tunnel Site of Grace at the bottom of the opening shaft.

---

Old Altus Tunnel is a vertical mine rather than a branching maze. Its main route descends through a sequence of wooden balconies and chambers before reaching the boss door. The most efficient way to clear it is to collect the upper-platform items first, then drop into the large lower chamber once you are ready to fight several enemies at once.

1. Opening shaft

After passing through the Stonesword Key seal, take the initial Explosive Stone Clumps from the corpse near the entrance.

The lift is the obvious way down, but the surrounding ledges are also accessible. Dropping carefully along the left side of the shaft leads to a ledge and then to a lower blocked passage containing Cracked Crystals. Continue descending carefully and activate the Site of Grace at the bottom.

Do not rush the drops. Falling too far can cause damage or death, while the items on the ledges are useful crafting materials.

2. First mining chamber

From the Site of Grace, follow the western path. This area contains more Cracked Crystals, a wooden hut and a miner using a flamethrower.

The hut contains a dog, so entering it can create an unnecessary close-range fight. The miner outside is the more immediate threat. Between the hut and the summoning pool is a Smithing Stone [5].

Continue into the larger chamber. The lower floor is reached later, so first take the ladder to the north-western wooden balcony.

3. Upper western room

The upper balcony leads west to a room containing miners, a Leyndell soldier and dogs in or around a wooden hut. Clear the enemies before collecting the room’s items.

The Boltdrake Talisman +1 is the most important item here. It improves lightning damage negation and is useful in areas or fights where lightning attacks are common.

4. Southern platforms

Return to the previous large chamber and move towards the southern wooden balcony. Rather than using the earlier ladder, drop onto the wooden path along the southern edge.

Two miners are working here. Defeat them and collect:

The route then drops into the chamber’s ground floor. Prepare before making the descent, because several enemies can converge on your position.

5. Large lower chamber

The lower chamber is the dungeon’s main combat test. It contains two armoured enemies and two dogs, with the possibility of additional miners nearby depending on your route and timing.

Dogs should be dealt with first. Their fast attacks can interrupt healing and make it difficult to manage the more heavily armoured enemies. If the group becomes overwhelming, retreat up the ladder and use the upper platforms to separate the enemies.

Once the room is safe, search the huts and the surrounding walls. The chamber contains:

The Troll’s Hammer is found on a corpse in the southern wooden hut. It is one of the dungeon’s major rewards and is separate from the Great Club dropped by the boss.

6. Hidden northern passage

Do not leave through the most obvious western passage immediately. Circle around the hut towards the north to find a less conspicuous route.

This side chamber contains another dog, a flamethrower miner, Somber Smithing Stone [5] and additional Smithing Stone [5] pickups. After clearing it, return to the previous room and take the western passage towards the mist gate.

---

The dungeon’s loot is primarily fixed pickup content. Enemy drops, such as materials from miners or dogs, should be treated separately from the named chest, corpse and wall deposits.

Equipment

Boltdrake Talisman +1

Found in the upper western room after passing through the miner and dog area. It increases lightning damage negation. This is useful defensive equipment, especially for characters preparing for lightning-heavy enemies or areas.

Troll’s Hammer

Found on a corpse in the southern hut in the large lower chamber. It is a heavy hammer associated with trolls and deals physical and fire damage. The weapon is a fixed dungeon pickup, not a random enemy drop.

Great Club

The Great Club is awarded for defeating the Stonedigger Troll. It should not be confused with the Troll’s Hammer found earlier in the dungeon.

Upgrade materials

The main value of Old Altus Tunnel is its collection of upgrade stones. Sources agree that the dungeon contains multiple Smithing Stone [5] pickups and Somber Smithing Stones [4], [5] and [6]. One database also records a Smithing Stone [4] and six Smithing Stone [5] pickups, while a walkthrough lists the individual route but does not mention every Smithing Stone [4] entry. The Smithing Stone [4] count is therefore best treated with caution when comparing guides.

Crafting materials

Cracked Crystals are found throughout the mine and can be collected from the walls and side passages. They are associated with crystal-based crafting recipes, including crystal ammunition and related items.

Enemy drops may include materials such as Thin Beast Bones or Lump of Flesh from dogs, but these are not fixed dungeon collectibles and can vary according to which enemies you kill.

---

Old Altus Tunnel mixes ordinary miners with Leyndell personnel and dogs. The setting suggests that the mine remains under occupation or supervision rather than being an abandoned ruin. The exact relationship between the miners and the soldiers is not explained directly, so it is safer to describe the latter as guards or occupying forces rather than assign them a specific mining role.

Ordinary enemies

Miners

Miners work the crystal deposits and are encountered in several chambers. Some carry mining tools, while others use flamethrower equipment. They are dangerous at close range but can generally be staggered by heavier attacks.

Watch for miners positioned beside wooden structures. A fight near the edge of a platform can become more dangerous than the same enemy on level ground.

Stray dogs

Dogs are present in the huts and lower chambers. They are quick, aggressive and particularly troublesome when paired with armoured enemies. Kill them early when clearing the lower chamber.

Leyndell Soldiers

Leyndell soldiers appear among the miners and in the lower combat area. They are more durable than the ordinary workers and can pressure the player while the dogs attack from another angle.

Leyndell Knights

Two Leyndell Knights are reported among the dungeon’s regular enemies. They are the most dangerous ordinary foes in the mine, especially when encountered together with dogs.

Enemy directory

Different databases use slightly different labels for the dog enemies, including Stray, Dog and Zombie Dog. These should not automatically be treated as three separate enemy families without an in-game bestiary. The dungeon’s practical enemy groups are miners, dogs, Leyndell soldiers and Leyndell knights.

---

The dungeon ends at a fog gate leading to the Stonedigger Troll. This is the same broad boss type found in other mining locations, but the enclosed arena and preceding dungeon route make positioning important.

The boss’s large attacks can punish players who remain directly in front of it. Staying near the feet and attacking the legs is the most reliable general approach. Repeated attacks to the legs can stagger the troll, allowing a critical hit when it falls. Magic, pierce damage and spirit summons can also help, depending on the build.

Practical strategy

The boss awards the Great Club. One database lists the reward as 9,600 runes, although rune values can depend on game state or source conventions, so the weapon is the more useful fixed identifier.

Practical strategy: steps

  1. 01
Enter with enough stamina to evade repeated ground attacks.
  2. 02
Move towards the legs rather than standing in front of the troll.
  3. 03
Attack one leg consistently where possible.
  4. 04
Roll through or away from wide swings rather than backing into the arena wall.
  5. 05
When the troll falls, move to its head for the critical attack.
  6. 06
Use spirit ashes if you need help creating openings.
  7. 07
Ranged characters should avoid standing still at medium range, where the troll’s reach remains threatening.

Vertical drops

The first section is built around a deep shaft. Several items are placed on ledges beside the main lift, encouraging careful falls. Use short drops where possible and avoid committing to a long descent before checking the landing point.

Group fights

The large lower chamber is the dungeon’s main hazard. Dropping into it without first planning an escape route can result in dogs and armoured enemies attacking together.

The ladder back to the upper platforms is a useful reset point. It gives you room to heal and can break up the fight if enemies do not all follow.

Hidden route

The northern passage around the hut is easy to miss because the western route appears to lead directly towards the boss. Search the perimeter of the lower chamber before leaving so that you do not miss the Somber Smithing Stone [5] and additional Smithing Stones.

Bleed preparation

Stanching Boluses are found in the upper western room. Their presence makes them useful if you are already suffering from bleed in the wider Altus Plateau, but Old Altus Tunnel’s listed regular enemies do not make bleed the dungeon’s defining mechanic. Collect them as a fixed item rather than assuming the area is built around a bleed status effect.

Characters and NPCs

No named NPC, merchant or quest-giver is verified within Old Altus Tunnel.

Factions and forces

The miners are ordinary enemies rather than named characters. The available descriptions support their role as workers in the mine, but do not establish a separate named faction operating there.

---

Old Altus Tunnel is presented as a working mine rather than a dead ruin. Its crystal deposits are still being harvested, and the miners’ continued labour is reinforced by the presence of military enemies and wooden mining infrastructure. Gamer Guides describes the commoners as working the rich crystal reservoir, while the dungeon’s enemy composition places Leyndell forces among them.

The tunnel therefore reflects one of Elden Ring’s recurring contrasts: the polished authority of Leyndell depends on labour carried out by ordinary people in dangerous, neglected spaces. The dungeon does not provide a named character or item description that fully explains who owns or administers the mine, so any more specific political interpretation remains uncertain.

The Stonedigger Troll at the bottom also fits the dungeon’s mining theme. It is not a named ruler or quest figure, but a large subterranean guardian that turns the mine’s deepest section into a final test of strength and positioning.

---

Old Altus Tunnel has no verified questline, named NPC state or story transformation tied specifically to its completion. Its contents are available as a self-contained dungeon once the player reaches Altus Plateau and has two Stonesword Keys.

The main practical missable element is not a quest trigger but the possibility of overlooking:

The dungeon’s boss and fixed loot should be treated as permanent base-game content rather than random or procedural encounters.

Inside the mine

---

Is Old Altus Tunnel the same as Altus Tunnel?

No. They are separate dungeons. Old Altus Tunnel contains the Stonedigger Troll, while Altus Tunnel contains the Crystalian Spear and Ringblade encounter.

How many Stonesword Keys are needed?

Two Stonesword Keys are required to open the entrance.

Where is the Troll’s Hammer?

It is on a corpse in the southern wooden hut in the large lower chamber.

Where is the Great Club?

The Great Club is obtained after defeating the Stonedigger Troll.

Is there a merchant inside?

No merchant or named NPC is verified within the dungeon.

Is Old Altus Tunnel part of Mt Gelmir?

No. It is an Altus Plateau dungeon. Descriptions that place it in Mt Gelmir appear to confuse the location with nearby western routes or use an imprecise regional label. The stronger location references place it in central-western Altus Plateau.

Is the dungeon worth visiting?

Yes, particularly for characters upgrading both ordinary and somber weapons. Its major rewards are the Boltdrake Talisman +1, Troll’s Hammer, Great Club and several upgrade-stone pickups.
