About this guide

Scope: Elden Ring base game, including the full mine dungeon and its boss arena. This guide does not include the nearby Academy of Raya Lucaria, Academy Crystal Cave, Raya Lucaria Gate Town, or other locations that share “Raya Lucaria” in their name.

Overview

Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel is an optional mine dungeon on the north-eastern shore of the lake in Liurnia of the Lakes. It is a compact but vertically arranged excavation site occupied by miners, marionette soldiers and sorcerers. Its main reward is the Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [1], dropped by the dungeon boss, which unlocks unlimited purchases of Smithing Stone [1] and Smithing Stone [2] at the Twin Maiden Husks after you hand the bell bearing in at Roundtable Hold.

The tunnel is also one of the better early sources of upgrade materials, including Smithing Stones, Somber Smithing Stones and Cracked Crystals. Its boss is a lone Crystalian, rather than the pair encountered in the nearby Academy Crystal Cave.

Overview and boundaries

Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel is a self-contained mine dungeon. Its boundaries begin at the mine entrance on the Liurnia shoreline and end at the Crystalian’s arena at the bottom of the excavation. It does not provide a route into the Academy of Raya Lucaria, and it is not an underground section of the Academy itself.

The nearby Academy Crystal Cave is a separate dungeon beneath the Academy area. It has its own entrance, layout, enemies and boss encounter. In particular, Academy Crystal Cave contains a pair of Crystalians, whereas Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel ends with one ringblade-wielding Crystalian.

The tunnel’s design is typical of Elden Ring’s mines. Its central path descends through several mining chambers, but much of the useful loot is placed on side platforms, narrow beams, behind storage enclosures or in recesses below the obvious route. A player who simply follows the lifts can reach the boss quickly but will miss several upgrade materials and key items.

Location and access

The entrance lies on dry ground at the north-eastern edge of the main Liurnia lake. From the lake, travel north-east along the shoreline and look for the mine opening in the cliff face. The entrance is north-east of the Academy of Raya Lucaria and is close enough to the Academy that the names can cause confusion, but the tunnel is reached from the overworld rather than through the Academy gates.

You do not need the Academy Glintstone Key to enter the tunnel. Nor do you need to defeat the Red Wolf of Radagon, Rennala or any other Academy boss. The dungeon is therefore suitable for a character exploring Liurnia before committing to the Academy’s main route.

A physical weapon with strike damage is the most useful preparation. Hammers, maces, flails and similar weapons perform well against the miners and Crystalian. Slash and thrust weapons can still work, especially after the Crystalian’s stance is broken, but they are less comfortable for the opening part of the fight.

Bring a torch or lantern if you find the mine’s darker chambers difficult to read. A shield can help against miners and marionettes, but avoid relying on blocking near the beams, where a stagger or knockback can send you falling.

Note

Before using a lift or committing to a drop, check the current platform for corpses, ore deposits and side passages.

Subareas and internal layout

The dungeon has no formally named internal districts. For navigation, it is useful to divide it into five practical sections:

These are descriptive divisions rather than separate map locations.

Entrance lift and first mining chamber

Take the first lift down from the entrance. The Site of Grace is near the bottom. From there, the tunnel opens into a chamber with miners, wooden supports and glittering deposits of crystal.

Do not immediately follow the apparent downward route. Search the chamber edges, mine walls and nearby bodies first. The early portion contains several Smithing Stones and Somber Smithing Stones, making it worthwhile to clear the miners before exploring. Miners are slow but can hit hard at close range, particularly if several of them become active together.

The safest method is to pull enemies one at a time. Use a strike weapon or charged heavy attacks to interrupt them, then search the room once it is quiet.

Upper mining platforms and wooden beams

The next section is more dangerous because the route crosses narrow wooden beams and suspended platforms. Some miners stand above or beside the route and can attack while you are trying to balance or jump.

Search each level before dropping. Several items are placed on side ledges rather than directly on the route to the next lift. If you descend too quickly, returning to a higher beam can be awkward or impossible without retracing a large part of the dungeon.

The tunnel is not a maze, but its vertical arrangement makes missed loot easy to overlook.

Marionette storage enclosures

After the deeper lift section, the tunnel changes from open mining platforms to a more enclosed series of rooms. Marionette Soldiers occupy storage-like enclosures along the route. These enemies can attack with rapid, unpredictable flurries, so avoid entering a cramped enclosure while several are active.

There are two notable enclosures. The second contains a chest with the Crystal Knife. The weapon is not on the main path, so check the side rooms rather than continuing directly through the tunnel.

The Crystal Knife is a dagger with a magical theme and is particularly appropriate for Intelligence-oriented characters or builds using quick secondary weapons. Its presence is one of the dungeon’s main rewards, but it is separate from the bell bearing obtained at the end.

Lower sorcerer and miner chamber

Beyond the marionette rooms is a larger lower chamber occupied by miners and sorcerer-type enemies. The sorcerers should generally be dealt with first. Their ranged attacks can interrupt your movement and make the surrounding miners more dangerous, especially near stairways and ledges. Push into the chamber carefully, using the walls and supports as cover where possible.

A side tunnel in this area contains the Shatter Earth sorcery on a corpse. It is easy to overlook because it is not placed directly along the route to the final lift.

After collecting the spell, search the remaining rubble and mining recesses for further upgrade materials before taking the final lift down.

Final lift and boss arena

The final section contains another lift and a short approach to the fog gate. There is additional Somber Smithing Stone material near the lower route. Once you pass through the fog, you enter the Crystalian’s arena.

The boss arena is a simple, enclosed chamber. There are no additional enemies in the fight, and there is no environmental puzzle.

Named directory: subareas and landmarks

Nearby but separate locations

These places are not part of Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel:

The Academy Crystal Cave is especially important to distinguish because it also contains Crystalians and is located close to the Academy. It is a separate minor dungeon, not a lower branch of this tunnel.

Dungeon areas

Nearby but separate locations

Residents, enemies and factions

There are no named residents, merchants, quest NPCs or faction leaders inside the tunnel. The occupants are hostile dungeon enemies associated with the mine and its magical surroundings.

Ordinary enemies

Enemy placement can vary slightly in how encounters activate, but the dungeon’s documented enemy groups include the following:

The miners are the dominant enemy type. They are resistant to many ordinary weapon attacks until struck with suitable physical damage, particularly strike damage. Their pickaxes and mining tools have enough reach to punish careless attacks.

Marionette Soldiers are more dangerous in confined spaces because of their rapid attacks and sudden movement. Avoid standing in the centre of a group. Pull one or two into the corridor where possible.

Sorcerer enemies should be prioritised when they have a clear line of sight. Their attacks are less dangerous than the boss’s, but they can stagger you while a miner closes the distance.

Boss: Crystalian

The tunnel’s boss is a single Crystalian armed with a ringblade. The encounter is notably different from the double-Crystalian fight in Academy Crystal Cave. The lone boss has room to move and uses ranged attacks, but there are no other bosses to divide your attention.

Boss rewards

The Eldenpedia listing records this Crystalian at 1,595 HP with a reward of 3,000 runes, though exact values can be affected by game conditions and should not be treated as a universal difficulty rating.

How to fight the Crystalian

The Crystalian’s crystal shell greatly reduces incoming damage before its stance is broken. Strike attacks are the most reliable way to deal with this defensive opening. Jumping heavy attacks are particularly useful because they apply strong stance pressure and can also avoid some low attacks.

The fight becomes substantially easier after the first stance break. If you are using a non-strike weapon, consider changing to a basic blunt weapon even if it is less upgraded. The damage type often matters more than a small difference in weapon level during this encounter.

How to fight the Crystalian: A practical sequence is

  1. 01
Enter with a mace, hammer, flail or another strike weapon equipped.
  2. 02
Stay close enough to punish the end of the Crystalian’s ringblade swings.
  3. 03
Use jumping heavy attacks or charged heavy attacks to damage its stance.
  4. 04
When it falls or becomes vulnerable, use critical attacks.
  5. 05
Continue attacking aggressively after the shell breaks, since the boss becomes much easier to damage.
  6. 06
Be ready to dodge its ranged crystal attacks rather than assuming that staying close removes every threat.

Items and collectibles

Unique and major rewards

The Crystal Knife and Shatter Earth are fixed items. They do not depend on random drops or procedural generation.

Upgrade materials and consumables

The tunnel contains multiple mining deposits and corpse pickups. The documented loot categories include:

Some guides list the stone pickups individually and others group them by material type, so exact totals are best checked against an in-game route or map while exploring. The important distinction is that these are fixed dungeon pickups, while enemy-dropped materials such as Cracked Crystals may also be obtained from repeated kills.

Cracked Crystals are useful for crafting Crystal Darts and related crystal-themed consumables. The tunnel is therefore useful both as a one-time loot location and as a source of crafting material while clearing it.

Consolidated item directory

The directory above records the named loot categories supported by the consulted walkthrough sources. Individual stone deposits are not reproduced as a numbered coordinate list because the available sources describe them by route and room rather than supplying a consistent canonical coordinate system.

Bell bearing and post-dungeon services

The most important reward is not a weapon or spell but the Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [1]. Take it to the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold and offer it to them. Their shop will then stock:

This changes early weapon upgrading significantly. Instead of relying entirely on mine deposits and scattered overworld pickups, you can buy the required lower-tier stones with runes whenever you have access to Roundtable Hold.

The bell bearing does not unlock Somber Smithing Stone purchases. The Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [1] comes from a different dungeon, Sellia Crystal Tunnel, and should not be confused with the reward here.

For a thorough clear, use this order

  1. 01
Enter the tunnel and take the first lift down.
  2. 02
Rest at the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel Site of Grace.
  3. 03
Clear the first miners before searching the chamber.
  4. 04
Collect the nearby ore deposits and corpse items.
  5. 05
Explore every side beam and ledge before using the next lift.
  6. 06
Search the mining platforms below the upper beams.
  7. 07
    Enter the marionette enclosures carefully.
  8. 08
Loot the chest in the second enclosure for the Crystal Knife.
  9. 09
Enter the lower chamber and deal with sorcerers before miners.
  10. 10
Search the side tunnel for Shatter Earth.
  11. 11
Collect the remaining Smithing Stones and Somber Smithing Stones.
  12. 12
    Take the final lift down.
  13. 13
    Defeat the Crystalian.
  14. 14
Return to Roundtable Hold and give the bell bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks.

Hazards and secrets

Falling from beams

The main environmental hazard is falling. Miners can hit you while you cross narrow beams, and a stagger can send you into the lower chamber or kill you outright. Clear enemies before attempting difficult jumps whenever possible.

Missed side chambers

The tunnel’s most common secret is not an illusory wall but a side route that looks unimportant. Storage enclosures and short side tunnels contain the Crystal Knife and Shatter Earth. Search any passage that branches from the apparent route, even if it appears to end in a small room.

Crystalian damage reduction

If your attacks are bouncing off the boss or dealing extremely low damage, the issue is usually the Crystalian’s intact stance rather than a bug. Use strike attacks and repeated heavy attacks until the shell breaks.

No known quest lockouts

No named NPC quest or faction progression is required to enter, clear or loot the tunnel. The dungeon can be completed before or after the Academy of Raya Lucaria, and defeating the Crystalian does not close a known quest branch.

Lore and significance

The tunnel’s immediate function is practical: it is an excavation site producing smithing materials in a region dominated by glintstone scholarship and crystallian culture. Its proximity to Raya Lucaria makes the mixture of miners, sorcerers, marionette constructs and crystal-themed rewards appropriate to Liurnia’s wider identity.

The Crystalian at the bottom is not a random miner transformed into a boss. Crystalians are a distinct crystalline race or construct-like species associated with the ancient mining and magical traditions of the Lands Between. Their resistance to ordinary attacks and vulnerability after stance damage are reflected mechanically in the boss encounter.

The tunnel also reinforces a recurring Elden Ring pattern: optional mines are both combat areas and upgrade infrastructure. Clearing them gives immediate materials, while their bosses often provide a bell bearing that changes how weapon progression works for the rest of the game.
