Siofra Aqueduct

Siofra Aqueduct is a compact underground dungeon in Elden Ring that extends north from the Siofra River and ends at the route into Deeproot Depths.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • The Aqueduct is not the whole of upper Siofra River It is the eastern and north-eastern structure reached from the Aqueduct-Facing Cliffs.
  • Its entrance is a drop-down route Leave the Aqueduct-Facing Cliffs grace, follow the cliff and jump onto the exposed aqueduct roof.
  • The main boss is the Valiant Gargoyle duo Defeating them rewards two weapons and unlocks the coffin route to Deeproot Depths.
  • D can assist with the boss, but only if the relevant part of his quest has been handled and he has been given the Twinned Set.
  • The area contains a small collection of fixed rewards, including Missionary’s Cookbook [5], Order Healing, a Rune Arc and upgrade materials.
  • The most important missable consideration is quest order D’s presence and summon sign depend on his quest state, while the Deeproot route is also relevant to Fia’s progression.

Note

Base-game guide. This page covers the Siofra Aqueduct proper, including the approach from the upper Siofra River cliffs, the Great Waterfall Basin and the route onward to Deeproot Depths. It does not treat all of Siofra River, Nokron, Night’s Sacred Ground or Deeproot Depths as part of the Aqueduct.

Overview

Siofra Aqueduct is a compact but important subterranean area in Elden Ring. It lies at the northern end of the upper Siofra River, where the remains of the Eternal City’s waterworks bridge the gap between the Ancestral Woods and the cavernous waterfall basin beyond. The location is easy to overlook because its entrance is not a conventional doorway. From the Aqueduct-Facing Cliffs Site of Grace, the player must cross a narrow cliff route and drop onto the roof of the aqueduct below.

The area is short compared with Nokron or Deeproot Depths, but it is densely packed with hostile soldiers, Crucible Knights, hidden loot and a boss fight that can block progression into a major optional story region.

The Aqueduct has three main functions

  1. 01
It provides a dangerous side route through the upper Siofra River.
  2. 02
It contains the Valiant Gargoyle duo, one of the base game’s significant optional boss encounters.
  3. 03
It provides the most direct route from Nokron to Deeproot Depths, an area closely associated with Fia, the Prince of Death and the Age of Duskborn ending.

The Great Waterfall Basin appears as a Site of Grace after the Valiant Gargoyles are defeated. It is therefore both a boss arena location and a checkpoint for the onward journey.

Reaching Siofra Aqueduct

The location is north-east of the Aqueduct-Facing Cliffs grace, and the entrance is specifically reached by leaving the cave and dropping from the cliff onto the aqueduct.

The usual route is

  1. 01
Enter Siofra River through the Siofra River Well in Mistwood.
  2. 02
Travel through the underground river and reach the upper Siofra area.
  3. 03
Progress through the Ancestral Woods and towards the Aqueduct-Facing Cliffs.
  4. 04
Rest at the Aqueduct-Facing Cliffs Site of Grace.
  5. 05
Leave the cave and follow the narrow cliff path.
  6. 06
Jump down onto the aqueduct roof when the masonry structure meets the cliff.
  7. 07
Follow the aqueduct route north-east to the Valiant Gargoyle arena.

Suggested first exploration route

The route can be shortened if the player only wants access to Deeproot Depths, but doing so risks missing the fixed collectibles and the opportunity to prepare the boss arena.

---

Siofra Aqueduct has no settlement, merchant district or ordinary civilian population. Its named and story-associated occupants are connected to the surrounding underground areas rather than being residents of a functioning community.

For a first visit, use this order

  1. 01
    Activate Aqueduct-Facing Cliffs.
  2. 02
Search the cliff edge and nearby roof sections before committing to the main route.
  3. 03
Enter the aqueduct and clear the first Fallen Hawk Soldiers carefully.
  4. 04
Deal with the Crucible Knights one at a time.
  5. 05
Collect the cookbook and minor loot in the side structures.
  6. 06
Check for D and his summon sign before entering the boss fog.
  7. 07
    Defeat the Valiant Gargoyles.
  8. 08
    Rest at Great Waterfall Basin.
  9. 09
Use the coffin beyond the basin to travel to Deeproot Depths.

D, Beholder of Death

D may appear in the Aqueduct area and can be involved in the Valiant Gargoyle encounter. His presence depends on the state of his quest and related interactions. He is not a permanent shopkeeper or service NPC here.

D’s summon sign can be available for the boss if the player has progressed the relevant events and given him the Twinned Set. This makes him a quest-dependent visitor rather than a fixed resident. His involvement also connects the Aqueduct to Fia’s storyline and the wider lore of Those Who Live in Death.

Named NPC directory

Do not assume that D will be present on every playthrough. His location and summon availability depend on quest progression. The Aqueduct does not have a normal merchant, blacksmith, upgrade service or permanent hub facility.

---

The Aqueduct is patrolled by forces associated with the Eternal City and by two Crucible Knights. The most notable ordinary enemies are:

The Fallen Hawk Soldiers are less individually dangerous than the Crucible Knights, but they become troublesome when several attack together or when they are encountered near a ledge. The Crucible Knights are the main security threat before the boss. Their long reach, delayed attacks and resistance to stagger can make the narrow walkways especially dangerous.

Practical enemy advice

Fallen Hawk Soldiers

Use the surrounding architecture to break line of sight. Avoid fighting several soldiers in a confined section if a retreat route is available. Their attacks are more manageable when they are pulled individually.

Crucible Knights

Treat each Crucible Knight as an elite encounter rather than a routine soldier. Parrying is effective for players familiar with the timing, while jump attacks, charged heavies and attacks from behind can work for suitable builds. Do not rush past both Knights unless you are deliberately making a boss run.

The two Crucible Knights are commonly identified as an axe-wielding and a tree-associated variant. They are not the area’s main boss, but they are among its most dangerous fixed enemies.

Spirit Jellyfish

The jellyfish are generally less threatening than the soldiers and knights. They can, however, distract the player on open ledges or complicate an escape from another enemy. They are best cleared from range or bypassed when the route is already safe.

Scarab

A scarab in the Aqueduct carries Order Healing, an incantation connected with resisting the effects associated with Those Who Live in Death. It is a fixed pickup reward rather than a random drop. Locate and kill the scarab carefully before it escapes.

Enemy directory

The last two entries are the area boss pair, not ordinary respawning enemies.

---

The Valiant Gargoyles are a two-enemy boss encounter in the Great Waterfall Basin. The first gargoyle is encountered alone, but the second joins during the fight, turning the battle into a pressure test of positioning, damage output and target control.

The pair use different weapon configurations. One relies on a greatsword and other heavy weapons, while the second uses a twinblade and can cover a large area with spinning attacks. Both can also use a damaging poison-like spray, so standing directly in front of them for too long is dangerous.

Boss rewards

Some older guides list a lower rune reward, so the exact figure should be checked against the game version being played. Contemporary boss listings commonly report 32,000 runes, while older walkthroughs report 22,500. The two weapon rewards are consistently identified across guides.

Recommended approach

The most important strategic goal is to prevent both gargoyles from attacking together for an extended period. Fast damage, stagger pressure and summons are particularly valuable because the second gargoyle’s arrival can otherwise turn a manageable fight into a sustained two-on-one.

Boss directory

---

The Aqueduct’s rewards are mostly fixed and can be collected on every playthrough. They include crafting knowledge, a useful incantation, runes and upgrade materials.

Recommended approach: steps

  1. 01
Enter with a spirit ash or co-operator if you want to reduce the risk of being surrounded.
  2. 02
Focus on the first gargoyle immediately.
  3. 03
Keep the second gargoyle at a distance when it enters.
  4. 04
Use pillars, the arena edges and the boss entrance area to separate them where possible.
  5. 05
Prioritise attacks that deal reliable physical or strike damage.
  6. 06
Avoid prolonged exchanges during the twinblade gargoyle’s spinning attacks.
  7. 07
Cure poison or equip suitable resistance if the spray attack is causing repeated deaths.

Major fixed rewards

The cookbook is found from the Aqueduct-Facing Cliffs approach, in a side structure near the route towards the Gargoyles. It teaches the player to craft the Sacred Order Pot.

The available sources agree on the principal fixed loot, but map databases and guide pages sometimes group the wider Aqueduct-Facing Cliffs approach with the aqueduct proper. For a strict location directory, treat pickups on the cliff approach as part of the approach area and pickups inside the stone waterworks as Aqueduct loot.

Collectible checklist

This is a fixed-content checklist. Enemy drops and crafting materials should not be confused with unique area rewards.

---

Aqueduct-Facing Cliffs

This is the primary checkpoint for the approach. It is located in a cave or cliffside position above the aqueduct. From here, the player can reach the structure by following the outside path and jumping down.

It is also the most convenient checkpoint for:

Great Waterfall Basin

This grace becomes available after the Valiant Gargoyles are defeated. It provides a safe recovery point before the coffin journey to Deeproot Depths.

Services absent from the area

The decorative stone structures are architectural remains, not businesses. No service should be inferred from the presence of rooms, pavilions or ruined stalls.

---

After defeating the Valiant Gargoyles, explore the far side of the arena. A stone coffin lies near the waterfall. Interacting with it begins a transport sequence and carries the player to Deeproot Depths.

This route is one of two known ways into Deeproot Depths:

The Aqueduct route is normally the more direct option for players following Fia’s storyline or exploring the underground regions in sequence. Deeproot Depths contains Fia, the Prince of Death’s Throne and further quest-related content, but those areas are outside the boundary of Siofra Aqueduct.

---

Ranni’s storyline

The Aqueduct is close to the portion of the game associated with Ranni’s search for Nokron and the Fingerslayer Blade, but the Aqueduct itself is not the main location for that objective. Players should not confuse the route to Siofra Aqueduct with the separate progression through Nokron and Night’s Sacred Ground.

Fia’s storyline

The Aqueduct is more directly important to Fia’s route because the Valiant Gargoyle victory opens the coffin route to Deeproot Depths. D’s presence also creates a connection between the boss area and the themes of death, Those Who Live in Death and the Prince of Death.

The Aqueduct boss is optional for completing the base game, but the route through it is highly relevant to Fia’s quest and to players seeking the Age of Duskborn ending. The specific ending progression occurs later in Deeproot Depths, not inside the Aqueduct itself.

D’s quest state

D is not simply a guaranteed helper. His appearance and summon availability are tied to quest progress. If the relevant dialogue or item hand-off has not occurred, the summon sign may not be present.

Because quest states can change after major events, check D’s position and dialogue before entering the boss fog if you want to use his assistance.

---

The entrance is easy to miss

The most common navigation error is searching for a conventional entrance at ground level. The Aqueduct is reached from above. From the Aqueduct-Facing Cliffs grace, follow the cliff route and look for the section where the aqueduct roof is close enough to reach with a drop.

Vertical drops

Several routes involve dropping from roofs, ledges or cliff paths. Some drops are survivable while others are fatal. If you are carrying a large rune total, spend or bank it before experimenting with the approach.

Crucible Knight ambush pressure

The Knights are positioned so that a rushed player can engage one while exposing themselves to another enemy or to a dangerous ledge. Pull enemies back towards wider ground rather than fighting on the narrowest section.

Boss arena positioning

The basin gives the gargoyles room to move and makes it difficult to keep both visible at once. Avoid being trapped against the waterfall edge. The boss arena is also the location of the coffin, so return after the fight and search the chamber rather than immediately fast travelling away.

No hidden town beneath the Aqueduct

The surrounding stone architecture can resemble a ruined urban area, but the Aqueduct does not contain a separate civilian quarter, functioning market or hidden merchant settlement. Its background structures are environmental remains and should not be counted as businesses.

---

The Siofra Aqueduct is one of several locations showing the scale and sophistication of the Eternal City civilisation. Its enormous channels and elevated stonework imply a planned water-management system built beneath the surface. The area’s placement above a vast waterfall and its connection to Deeproot Depths create a visual link between the Eternal City, the underground rivers and the roots beneath the Erdtree.

The presence of Fallen Hawk Soldiers suggests that the abandoned Eternal City is not entirely empty. The Crucible Knights, meanwhile, are associated with the Crucible and with ancient life before the Erdtree’s dominant order. Their presence in the Aqueduct contributes to the impression that the area is being guarded rather than merely inhabited by random monsters.

The Valiant Gargoyles reinforce the location’s funerary and architectural character. They are animated stone guardians, positioned at the boundary between the Eternal City route and the deeper world of roots, death and Fia’s story.

These interpretations are environmental readings rather than explicit statements that the game assigns a single historical purpose to every structure. The reliable progression fact is that the Aqueduct connects the upper Siofra route to Deeproot Depths after the Gargoyle fight.

After the boss

---

Is Siofra Aqueduct part of Nokron?

It is part of the wider underground complex associated with Siofra River and lies beside Nokron, but it is best treated as a distinct named location. Nokron, Night’s Sacred Ground and Siofra Aqueduct should not be merged into one directory.

Do I need to defeat the Valiant Gargoyles?

No. They are optional for the main progression of Elden Ring. You do, however, need to defeat them if you want to use the Aqueduct coffin route to Deeproot Depths.

Can I summon D for the boss?

Potentially. D’s summon availability depends on his quest state and whether the required interaction involving the Twinned Set has occurred. His sign is not guaranteed on every playthrough.

What do the Valiant Gargoyles drop?

The boss encounter rewards Gargoyle’s Greatsword and Gargoyle’s Twinblade, along with a large rune payout.

Is there a merchant in the Aqueduct?

No verified merchant or functional shop operates inside Siofra Aqueduct. The location contains fixed loot, enemies, a boss and a route to Deeproot Depths.

Where does the coffin go?

It carries the player from the defeated Gargoyle arena to Deeproot Depths. The coffin is not a teleport to Nokron or another part of Siofra River.

Is the Aqueduct required for Fia’s ending?

It is not the only route into Deeproot Depths, but it is the most direct route for many players. Fia’s ending-related progression continues in Deeproot Depths and later areas rather than concluding in the Aqueduct.
