About this guide
Scope: Base-game Elden Ring. This guide covers the dungeon itself, its Site of Grace, internal chambers, traps, loot and boss. It does not expand the location to include the surrounding Stormhill landscape, Church of Elleh, Stormveil Castle or nearby overworld encounters.
Overview
Stormfoot Catacombs is an optional minor dungeon in western Limgrave, built into the foot of Stormhill northwest of the Church of Elleh. It is one of the earliest catacombs most players can discover, and acts as a compact introduction to several recurring dungeon ideas in Elden Ring: hidden imps, fire-breathing traps, vertical routes, lever-operated boss doors and Erdtree Burial Watchdogs.
The dungeon is small, but its layout is less straightforward than its size suggests. The entrance route leads quickly to a fork, while the boss door remains locked until the player reaches a raised side section and pulls a concealed lever. Several apparent dead ends contain ambushes, and the fire-spitting pillars punish players who rush through without observing their timing.
Stormfoot Catacombs is entirely optional. Its main rewards are spirit ashes, a Prattling Pate, early grave-glovewort upgrades and the runes and spirit ash obtained from the Erdtree Burial Watchdog. There is no required NPC quest, faction objective or main-story progression step inside the dungeon.

Where to find Stormfoot Catacombs
The entrance lies in western Limgrave, north-west of the Church of Elleh and below the slopes of Stormhill. From the Church of Elleh, travel north towards Stormhill and look for the cave entrance built into the rocky rise. A hostile soldier is positioned near the approach, so a new character may wish to sneak past rather than fight in the open before entering the dungeon.
The dungeon’s boundary begins at the entrance tunnel and includes:
The following are neighbouring locations, not internal subareas:
Named locations within scope
No separately named internal chambers, shops, buildings, roads, NPC residences or businesses are identified in the dungeon. Most rooms are unnamed functional spaces rather than canonical place names.
---
Stormfoot Catacombs is best understood as a compact, looping dungeon with three practical layers.
Named locations within scope
Entrance and lower corridor
The entrance opens into a short passage leading to the dungeon’s Site of Grace. Beyond it, the route divides. One branch contains an early loot room with imps, while the other leads towards the boss door and the fire-trap section.
The boss door is visible before it can be opened. This is useful because it establishes the dungeon’s objective early, but the route to the lever takes the player away from the door and upwards through a side section.
Fire-trap corridors
The central route contains stone pillars that periodically emit jets of flame. The first major trap blocks a narrow corridor, while a second pillar guards a nearby room containing several imps and crafting materials.
The pillars are not merely environmental decoration. They are active hazards that can damage both the player and enemies. A pillar can generally be neutralised by reaching its base or rear side and attacking it. Ranged attacks are also useful when the player wants to trigger or disable a trap without entering its danger zone.
Upper ladder and lever section
A ladder leads to an upper room containing further imps and Grave Glovewort. From this raised area, the player can reach the lever that opens the boss door. A separate room contains the Wandering Noble Ashes.
The upper section has several drop-down points. Dropping from the wrong ledge can return the player to the lower floor without reaching the lever, so it is safer to clear the upper rooms before descending.
Subarea directory
These are descriptive route names rather than official in-game names.
---
Stormfoot Catacombs can be entered very early, shortly after the player begins exploring Limgrave. There is no key, quest or story event required to open the entrance.
All normal enemies and the boss deal physical damage, while the fire-breathing pillar and some Watchdog attacks add fire damage. Physical defence, fire resistance and careful positioning are more useful here than status-focused preparation. The dungeon’s enemies are described as resistant or immune to many status effects, while Strike damage is the most reliable damage type against the Watchdog.

1. Enter and rest at the Site of Grace
Enter the cave and follow the initial passage to the Stormfoot Catacombs Site of Grace. Rest before proceeding, especially if this is one of your first dungeons.
From the Grace, move into the first corridor and look carefully around the opening rooms. Imps may be motionless until approached, making them easy to mistake for corpses or scenery.
2. Clear the first side room
The first side room contains a corpse with 2 Root Resin. Two imps occupy the room, with one positioned near the corpse and another waiting to ambush from the side.
Do not rush directly to the item. Enter with your shield raised or draw the enemies out into the corridor, where their numbers are easier to manage.
3. Check the boss corridor
Return to the main corridor and take the branch leading towards the locked boss door. A Grave Glovewort [1] lies near a coffin close to the entrance to the boss route.
The boss door cannot yet be opened. Treat it as a landmark and turn back towards the open room.
4. Search the first open room
The open room contains another Grave Glovewort [1] and a Grave Violet. It also contains two imps. One drops from above, while another attacks with thrown daggers.
The ranged imp may remain out of immediate reach, so use a bow, spell or thrown weapon if chasing it would expose you to another ambush.
5. Pass the first fire-spitting pillar
Continue through the narrow corridor. A stone pillar periodically sends a line of fire across the passage.
Behind the first pillar is the Prattling Pate “Hello”, placed on a corpse. This is one of the dungeon’s most recognisable rewards and is easy to miss if you simply sprint towards the next room.
There are several safe approaches
- 01Watch the flame cycle and sprint through immediately after the fire stops.
- 02Use a ranged attack to activate or manipulate the trap before committing to the passage.
- 03Reach the pillar’s base or rear side and attack it to disable the hazard.
- 04Use the side route, but remain alert because another fire trap is positioned nearby.
6. Clear the second fire-trap room
Take the side path towards the second fire-spitting pillar. The room beyond contains several imps, including enemies positioned in the far corners and on the wall.
Clear the room before collecting the nearby items. The tight space makes it easy to be surrounded, especially if an imp remains attached to the wall behind you.
7. Climb the ladder
A ladder near the second trap leads to the upper section. Two imps wait in the room above, with another Grave Glovewort [1] available nearby.
Check the room carefully before climbing fully into it. Imps can attack from the sides immediately after the climbing animation ends.
8. Collect the Wandering Noble Ashes
Continue into the adjoining upper room. Two imps guard the area, including one that throws daggers to draw the player into an ambush.
The corpse in this room holds Wandering Noble Ashes. These spirit ashes summon a group of wandering noble spirits. They are not among the strongest early-game summons, but they can distract enemies and are a useful early reward for a new character.
9. Reach the lever
Return towards the upper room and look for the drop-down point on the far side. Drop carefully onto the small platform rather than falling all the way to the lower floor.
The platform contains more imps, including a dagger-thrower and an enemy that can be mistaken for part of the scenery. The lever is positioned on this section.
Pull it to open the boss door. Once the lever has been activated, return through the dungeon to the boss entrance.
10. Return to the boss door
The opened door is back near the lower corridor and the first Grave Glovewort. Rest at the Site of Grace if necessary before entering.
The boss arena contains no additional regular enemy group. Spirit summoning is available in the arena if the usual summon icon is present.
---
Imps
Imps are the dungeon’s standard enemy. They are small, aggressive creatures that favour ambushes over direct open-room combat. In Stormfoot Catacombs they can be found:
Their attacks are quick, and their weapons can inflict blood loss. They are also dangerous because several encounters place them in narrow corridors where retreating can lead directly into a fire trap.
The safest general method is to advance slowly, draw one imp at a time into a cleared corridor and check the walls and ceiling before collecting loot. Guard counters can be effective when using a shield, while Strike attacks are generally useful against the stone-bodied enemies.
Enemy directory
No named ordinary NPCs, merchants, invaders, quest characters or faction members are established within the dungeon.
---
The Stormfoot Catacombs boss is the Erdtree Burial Watchdog, a sword-wielding Watchdog variant. It has a strange, statue-like animation style: it may stand rigidly, float through the air, turn abruptly or transition between attacks with less conventional movement than most early bosses.
The boss has approximately 1,200 HP and awards 1,300 runes. Defeating it grants Noble Sorcerer Ashes. It is resistant to most damage types and status effects, while Strike damage is its principal weakness.
Main attacks
Sword swings
The Watchdog can swing its sword quickly despite its stiff appearance. Do not assume that its slow movement makes every attack easy to punish. Dodge towards a safe angle rather than repeatedly circling at the edge of the arena.
Rising slam
The boss may rise vertically before crashing down with its sword. This attack has a clear visual tell, but its tracking can be awkward. Wait for the downward movement before rolling, or move around it if you are already close.
Fire breath
The Watchdog can breathe fire across the arena. Create distance when its head and mouth begin to signal the attack. The flame is especially dangerous if the player is already trapped near a wall.
Tail attack
The tail can ignite during combat, allowing the boss to deal fire damage with a tail slam. Watch the rear of the model as carefully as the sword. Staying directly behind the Watchdog is not always safe.
Practical strategy
The arena is more forgiving when the boss remains central. Letting it drift towards the walls reduces the player’s room to avoid the flame attack and makes its abrupt turns harder to read.
Boss rewards
---
Practical strategy: steps
- 01Enter with a Strike weapon if one is available.
- 02Keep the Watchdog near the centre of the arena.
- 03Avoid being pushed into a corner while it floats or rises.
- 04Roll after the attack begins rather than reacting to its initial movement.
- 05Use short punish windows after the slam and fire-breath attacks.
- 06If using spirit ashes, summon them early so they can draw attention while you learn the boss’s timing.
- 07Do not overextend after a single successful hit. The Watchdog’s recovery animations can end suddenly.
Boss rewards
| Reward | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Noble Sorcerer Ashes | 1 |
| Runes | 1,300 |
Fixed loot
The dungeon’s known fixed rewards are listed below. These are placed objects rather than random enemy drops.
The item arrangement is consistent with the dungeon walkthroughs and item directory.

| Prattling Pate “Hello” | 1 | Behind the first fire-spitting pillar |
| Smoldering Butterfly | 3 | Room beyond the second fire-spitting pillar |
| Ghost Glovewort [1] | 1 | Second fire-trap room |
| Wandering Noble Ashes | 1 | Upper room reached after climbing the ladder |
| Noble Sorcerer Ashes | 1 | Reward for defeating Erdtree Burial Watchdog |
Crafting and upgrade significance
Stormfoot Catacombs is particularly useful for early spirit-upgrade materials:
The dungeon therefore offers practical progression rewards even if the player does not intend to use the two spirit ashes found here.
---
Stormfoot Catacombs Site of Grace
The dungeon has one named Site of Grace, located near the entrance. It serves as the main checkpoint before the boss and allows the player to replenish flasks, change spells and manage spirit ashes.
There are no merchants, smithing tables, map fragments, summoning pools, lifts, doors requiring Stonesword Keys or other permanent facilities identified inside the dungeon.
Facility directory
---
Stormfoot Catacombs is not a settlement and has no resident NPC population.
Ordinary NPCs
None verified within the dungeon.
Quest characters
None verified within the dungeon.
Factions
No faction has a named presence in the catacombs. The dungeon’s occupants are hostile imps and the Erdtree Burial Watchdog rather than a quest-linked army, cult or named organisation.
Businesses and services
None. There are no shops, purchasable properties, working businesses or decorative storefronts in the catacombs.
---
Fire-spitting pillars
The pillars are the dungeon’s defining hazard. They cycle on and off, forcing the player to read timing rather than simply sprinting through every corridor.
The side room near the first pillar contains the Prattling Pate, so a completionist route should deliberately search behind the trap rather than treating the corridor as a passage to be crossed as quickly as possible.
Environmental ambushes
The imps are deliberately placed to reward cautious observation. Before opening a chest-like corpse area or picking up an item, inspect:
Vertical route confusion
The ladder and upper platform create the impression that the dungeon has several unrelated branches. In practice, they form one loop leading to the lever. The player can accidentally drop to the lower floor before reaching it, which makes the route seem unfinished.
---
This route avoids unnecessary backtracking and collects the side loot before the boss.
---
---
Stormfoot Catacombs belongs to the wider network of burial dungeons associated with the Erdtree and the handling of the dead in the Lands Between. Its guardian is an Erdtree Burial Watchdog, a class of ancient stone protector associated with catacombs. The Watchdog’s presence explains the dungeon’s ceremonial, guarded character, although Stormfoot Catacombs does not provide a large amount of direct narrative exposition.
The relationship between Watchdogs and imps is also reflected in item descriptions and broader catacomb lore. The imps function as the dungeon’s scavenging inhabitants, while the Watchdog serves as its final guardian. In practical terms, the dungeon presents this hierarchy through escalating encounters: small ambush predators first, then the large statue-like protector at the end.
---
There is no known quest state that permanently removes Stormfoot Catacombs’ fixed loot or boss. The dungeon can be completed at any point after reaching the entrance, and it remains optional throughout the base game.
The main missable elements are practical rather than progression-based:
The dungeon does not contain a named NPC whose dialogue changes with story progression, nor does it have a known alternate layout in New Game Plus. Enemy and boss scaling can change with the game cycle, but the fixed dungeon structure and item placements remain the same in principle.
