About this guide
Game: Elden Ring Continuity: Base game, not Shadow of the Erdtree or Elden Ring Nightreign Region: Liurnia of the Lakes Location type: Open-world point of interest and ruined temple complex Recommended progression: Early to mid Liurnia Major encounter: Glintstone Dragon Smarag Main rewards: Icerind Hatchet, Academy Glintstone Key, Dragon Heart and runes
Overview
Temple Quarter is a half-submerged ruin in northern Liurnia of the Lakes, south-west of the Academy of Raya Lucaria. It is a small but important open-world location because it sits on the route to the Academy’s key, contains the frost-oriented Icerind Hatchet, and provides a useful Site of Grace for exploring the western shallows around Raya Lucaria.
The name refers to the ruined complex and its immediate flooded surroundings. It does not include the Academy of Raya Lucaria, the South Raya Lucaria Gate, the Academy Crystal Cave, Rose Church, or the separate island immediately north where Glintstone Dragon Smarag rests. Those places are nearby connections rather than subordinate parts of Temple Quarter.
Overview and boundaries
Temple Quarter is a drowned religious complex whose surviving stonework rises only slightly above the lake. Its most recognisable feature is the central ring of pale flowers and broken masonry. The ruins are spread over shallow water rather than arranged as a conventional dungeon, so exploration is mostly conducted on foot or from Torrent.
The named location is best understood in three parts:
The third area is often treated as part of the Temple Quarter route in walkthroughs, but it is geographically distinct. Smarag’s island is north of the main ruins, and the dragon is described as guarding the corpse carrying the key.
Included places
Canonical named entries within the location’s normal game-map scope
Nearby but separate places
The separate status of these neighbouring areas matters. The Academy is a legacy dungeon, Rose Church is a distinct open-world ruin, and the Academy Crystal Cave is an independently named cave dungeon. Temple Quarter itself has no internal dungeon map or sub-area with its own separate loading sequence.

Geography and landmarks
The quarter sits in the shallow western waters of Liurnia. The lake floor is mostly open, which gives the area long sightlines but also leaves the player exposed to attacks from enemies concealed in the water. Broken temple walls, collapsed arches and low stone platforms provide the main visual landmarks.
The central flower-ringed section is the most dangerous part of the ruin on a first visit. Albinaurics can remain low in the water and rise as the player approaches. The Miranda enemies occupy patches of vegetation and can attack with ranged glintstone projectiles. A cautious player should therefore avoid riding straight into the middle of the ruins without first checking the edges.
The southern broken structure is the most useful landmark for item collection. It contains the chest holding the Icerind Hatchet. The chest is in a small ruined tower or open-arched structure south-east of the Site of Grace, on the route towards the southern island.
Landmarks directory
The game does not give separate names to the individual ruins, towers or decorative structures. Descriptions such as “southern broken tower” are navigation labels, not additional canonical location names.
Access and routes
From Academy Gate Town
This is the most natural approach for a player following the Academy Glintstone Key trail.
This route is recommended because it connects naturally with the Academy’s key quest and exposes the player to the main Liurnia terrain without requiring a dungeon entrance.
From Rose Church
Temple Quarter is north-west of Rose Church. From the church, ride north-west across the lake, keeping the Academy’s western structures to your right where possible. This is a short route, although the open water makes it easy to drift into nearby enemies or lose track of the quarter’s broken walls.
From South Raya Lucaria Gate
The gate lies north-east of Temple Quarter. It is normally visited before the key is obtained, because the sealed entrance provides the clue that a Glintstone Key is required. A corpse near the gate carries the Meeting Place Map, which points towards the key’s location north of Temple Quarter.
From Academy Gate Town
- 01Start at Academy Gate Town.
- 02Travel west along the lake edge.
- 03Continue north-west through the shallow waters and the area containing Glintstone Miranda enemies.
- 04Approach the quarter from the south-east or east.
- 05Activate the Temple Quarter Site of Grace on the north-western side of the ruins.
Suggested first-visit route: For a thorough but safe first visit
- 01Activate the Temple Quarter Site of Grace.
- 02Circle the outside of the ruins rather than walking directly into the flower ring.
- 03Clear the visible Miranda enemies and Albinaurics from the perimeter.
- 04Search the southern broken structure for the Icerind Hatchet.
- 05Sweep the western and northern temple remains for materials.
- 06Travel north towards Smarag’s island.
- 07Either sneak past the dragon for the Academy Glintstone Key or return later to fight it.
- 08Use the key at either Academy entrance.
Residents, enemies and security
Temple Quarter has no resident friendly NPCs, merchants, guards, invaders or formal law-enforcement force. Its security is environmental and hostile rather than organised. Albinaurics occupy the flooded ruins, while Miranda enemies defend patches of vegetation.
Ordinary enemies
The ordinary Albinaurics are particularly easy to underestimate because they blend into the shallow water. The Miranda enemies are more obvious but can punish a player who approaches in a straight line. Clear them from range where possible, or use the broken walls to interrupt their line of sight.
Some routes across the surrounding Liurnia shallows also contain flying Teardrop Scarabs. These are navigation hazards and moving collectibles, but they are not listed as a defining enemy group of the Temple Quarter ruins. One walkthrough specifically notes that the flying scarabs encountered on the approach do not provide a useful drop in that route.
Boss and major encounter
Glintstone Dragon Smarag
Glintstone Dragon Smarag rests on the island north of Temple Quarter. It is an optional dragon encounter and guards the corpse carrying the Academy Glintstone Key. The key can be collected without defeating Smarag by approaching quietly from behind or rushing to the corpse and escaping.
The commonly reported reward is 14,000 runes and one Dragon Heart.
The Dragon Heart contributes to the Dragon Communion system. Smarag’s defeat also makes Smarag’s Glintstone Breath available at the Cathedral of Dragon Communion in Caelid, where the incantation costs two Dragon Hearts.
Fighting Smarag
Smarag uses glintstone-based attacks rather than ordinary flame. The most important attacks to watch for are:
Torrent is useful for disengaging from the dragon’s breath and for reaching the head after an attack. Staying directly under the dragon is dangerous because the body and wings can cover a large area. Players who are not ready for the fight should simply take the key and return later.
Items and collectibles
Icerind Hatchet
The Icerind Hatchet is in a chest inside a broken structure in the southern part of Temple Quarter. From the Site of Grace, travel south-east towards the small ruined tower or open-arched building. No boss is required to obtain it.
The weapon is especially notable for its frost-related combat identity and its Hoarfrost Stomp skill. The weapon page also records bonus damage against dragon-type enemies and explains that the weapon cannot be buffed or infused.
Academy Glintstone Key
The key is on the corpse near Glintstone Dragon Smarag, north of the main ruins. It opens the sealed gates of the Academy of Raya Lucaria. The key’s description explains that a Glintstone Key remembers its user and cannot simply be passed to another person after use.
This is the first key normally acquired for entering the Academy. A second key can later be found inside the Academy and is associated with Sorcerer Thops, but that second key is not part of Temple Quarter.
Collectible directory
The following named pickups and materials are associated with the Temple Quarter ruins or their immediate exploration route:
A more detailed route report records Trina’s Lilies on the western side of the area, Miquella’s Lilies beneath the northern temple buttresses, and a Rimed Crystal Bud near the flower-ringed area.
Not every material is a permanently fixed one-time reward. Flowers and other crafting resources may reappear after resting or returning to the area, so they should be distinguished from fixed chest contents and fixed corpse pickups.

Walkthrough
Optional boss route
If you intend to fight Smarag, first collect the key. This prevents an unsuccessful boss attempt from delaying access to the Academy. Once the key is secured, use the open lake around the island to keep room for Torrent’s movement and retreat when Smarag takes flight.
Safe collection route
- 01Start at the Site of Grace. The grace sits towards the north-west of the quarter. Rest here before entering the centre of the ruins.
Safe collection route
- 01Circle the perimeter. Move around the outside edge, dealing with Miranda enemies and visible Albinaurics. This prevents several enemies from joining the central fight at once.
Safe collection route
- 01Approach the flower ring carefully. Albinaurics may be concealed in the water. Use lock-on, listen for movement and avoid committing to a long attack animation in the middle of the ring.
Safe collection route
- 01Collect the Icerind Hatchet. Ride south-east to the broken tower or arched ruin. Open the chest inside.
Safe collection route
- 01Sweep the temple remains. Check the western side and the northern buttresses for flowers and crafting materials.
Safe collection route
- 01Move north towards Smarag’s island. The island is beyond the main ruined complex. The dragon may be asleep when approached, giving you an opportunity to pass behind it.
Safe collection route
- 01Take the Academy Glintstone Key. Loot the corpse near the dragon. You do not need to fight Smarag.
Safe collection route
- 01Return to South Raya Lucaria Gate. Use the key to open the Academy’s sealed entrance, or keep exploring Liurnia before beginning the legacy dungeon.
Lore and environmental reading
Temple Quarter is associated with both Albinaurics and the imagery of the stars. A church directory identifies the site as connected with Albinaurics and stars, while the enemies and abandoned ruins reinforce Liurnia’s wider association with artificial life, sorcery and the Academy’s influence.
The location offers environmental storytelling rather than an explicit quest. Its Albinauric inhabitants occupy a ruined place of worship close to the Academy, while Smarag, a dragon corrupted by the glintstones it consumed, waits nearby with the object needed to enter that institution. The arrangement links three important Liurnian themes:
The dead Albinauric surrounded by flowers is a memorable environmental detail. The game does not provide a confirmed account of who killed the figure or why the flowers were arranged there, so interpretations about a diplomatic offering, burial or attack should remain theories rather than established lore.
Progression changes and missability
Temple Quarter has no known major world-state transformation comparable to the destruction of a legacy dungeon or the movement of a quest NPC. Its principal rewards remain available during the normal base-game progression.
There is no verified Temple Quarter quest that permanently fails solely because the player explores the area in the wrong order. The main practical risk is overlooking the distinction between the southern Icerind Hatchet chest and the northern Academy key.
Important progression points are
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Before entering the Academy | the Academy Glintstone Key is needed to pass the sealed gates. |
| After entering the Academy | the key from Temple Quarter remains a completed key item, while a separate second key can be found for Thops. |
| After defeating Smarag | Smarag is permanently defeated in that playthrough, and the Dragon Heart reward is obtained. The key remains obtainable whether or not the dragon is killed. |
| New Game Plus | fixed items and bosses reset with the new cycle, as with other base-game locations. |
Nearby connections
The Academy Crystal Cave should not be folded into Temple Quarter simply because it is reached through nearby shallows. It has its own dungeon identity, enemies and rewards.
