Key takeaways

  • The Shaded Castle is an optional dungeon in northern Altus Plateau, not a separate open-world region.
  • The safest entrance is from the north-western side of the castle, where rocks allow Torrent to jump over the outer wall.
  • Poison and Scarlet Rot are the main hazards Carry Neutralizing Boluses and consider preserving HP rather than fighting every enemy in the swamp.
  • The Valkyrie’s Prosthesis is in a chest guarded by a Cleanrot Knight and is a required item for Millicent’s later progression.
  • Patches appears on the bridge outside the boss arena after the relevant Volcano Manor stage. Speak to him before leaving if you want to continue his quest.
  • The dungeon has three Sites of Grace Shaded Castle Ramparts, Shaded Castle Inner Gate and Castellan’s Hall, the last of which appears after Elemer is defeated.

Note

Base game guide. This article covers The Shaded Castle dungeon in Elden Ring, including its surrounding poison moat where the game treats that area as part of the castle approach. It does not include the separate wilderness around the castle, the nearby Erdtree-Gazing Hill, or the wider Altus Plateau and Mt Gelmir regions.

Overview

The Shaded Castle is an optional castle dungeon in the northern Altus Plateau. It stands in a poisonous basin between the Altus Plateau and Mt Gelmir, with only a small section of its outer walls rising above the mire. The castle is home to Elemer of the Briar, a notorious killer who seized the executioner’s weapon of House Marais and took control of the stronghold.

Unlike the great legacy dungeons, The Shaded Castle is compact, self-contained and focused on environmental hazards rather than complicated branching architecture. Its main obstacles are poisonous water, Scarlet Rot plants, corpse-like enemies that inflict poison, narrow rooftops and several aggressive defenders placed around the upper keep.

The dungeon is optional, but it contains two important quest-related rewards:

Defeating Elemer also grants the Marais Executioner’s Sword and Briar Greatshield, making the castle especially worthwhile for strength, arcane and executioner-themed builds.

Nearby but separate locations

---

The castle lies in a low, poisoned basin surrounded by cliffs and leafless trees. From a distance, it looks almost submerged. The outer walls are partly collapsed, and the normal gate is not a practical entrance.

The most straightforward route begins at Erdtree-Gazing Hill Site of Grace. Travel east and descend into the valley, then follow the dead-looking trees and rocky ground towards a gap in the cliffs. The castle eventually becomes visible ahead. This approach is also useful because it avoids trying to reach the entrance from the lower road or from the southern side, where the castle wall is difficult to climb conventionally.

Nearby but separate locations

Entering the castle

At the castle’s outer perimeter, look for a large pile of rocks against the wall. Torrent’s double jump allows you to climb over the broken section. This is the intended practical entrance for most players.

Inside the wall, you will immediately encounter the castle’s characteristic corpse-like enemies. Their grab attacks build Poison rapidly, but they are fragile and can usually be killed before becoming dangerous. The swamp itself slows movement, so fighting while standing in deep poison is rarely worthwhile.

Neutralizing Boluses can be found within the dungeon, but relying on the first pickup is risky if you are already carrying Poison build-up. The castle also contains Poison Grease, Rot Grease, Poisonbone Darts and several crafting materials associated with poison and rot.

---

Shaded Castle Ramparts

The first Site of Grace lies on the south-eastern ramparts near the initial interior route. It is reached by crossing the lower poison-filled area and climbing a ladder near the castle wall.

This is the principal checkpoint for the first half of the dungeon. From here, you can return to the entrance area, reach the prosthesis room by climbing the wall-side ladder, or continue towards the inner keep.

Shaded Castle Inner Gate

The Inner Gate Site of Grace is below a portcullis on the southern side of the main keep. It marks the transition from the poisonous lower courtyard to the more conventional castle interior.

The area immediately around it contains a ghostly figure, ladders, dogs, Noble Pages and a route towards the rooftops. The upper section is more dangerous than the swamp because enemies can attack from confined rooms and elevated platforms.

Castellan’s Hall

Castellan’s Hall is the boss room. It is not available as a Site of Grace until Elemer of the Briar has been defeated. Once the boss is dead, the room becomes a permanent checkpoint and fast-travel location.

---

1. Cross the outer wall

The lower route contains several minor pickups, including Smithing Stones, Golden Runes and Beast Blood. A rooftop section also contains a Somber Smithing Stone and additional crafting materials.

1. Cross the outer wall: steps

  1. 01
From the approach, locate the rocks against the castle wall.
  2. 02
Use Torrent’s double jump to reach the broken wall.
  3. 03
Drop into the castle grounds and activate the first available route towards the ramparts.
  4. 04
Deal with the corpse-like enemies quickly, or run past them if Poison is already building.
  5. 05
Follow the outer path until you find the corpse carrying Neutralizing Boluses.

2. Reach Shaded Castle Ramparts

Return towards the main courtyard and look for the ladder leading up beside the wall. Cross the broken ruins and climb to the ramparts.

Activate Shaded Castle Ramparts before making a serious attempt at the rest of the dungeon. If you die in the rot or poison, this Site of Grace substantially shortens the return journey.

3. Collect Valkyrie’s Prosthesis

From the swamp-side area, locate the ladder on the right-hand wall and climb into the upper section. Follow the path left through the castle until you reach a room guarded by a Cleanrot Knight.

The knight is protecting a chest containing Valkyrie’s Prosthesis. You may kill the knight or run past it, open the chest and escape. The item is necessary for Millicent’s quest, so collect it even if you do not intend to clear the whole castle immediately.

Millicent progression

Give Valkyrie’s Prosthesis to Millicent at the Erdtree-Gazing Hill. This allows her to continue her combat-related dialogue and later movements. The prosthesis itself is not consumed for an upgrade and does not unlock a general prosthetic-limb system. It is a quest item with a specific use.

4. Reach Shaded Castle Inner Gate

From the prosthesis room, return to the main route and pass through the broken wall. Drop down onto the rooftops, then cross the poisonous lower section.

The swamp slows movement and can leave you vulnerable to attacks from slugs and corpse enemies. If you are only trying to reach the next checkpoint, running directly across the poison is often safer than stopping to fight.

Activate Shaded Castle Inner Gate once you reach it.

5. Search the Inner Gate rooftops

From the Inner Gate, head north and climb the ladder. You will reach a dark room containing enemies and another ladder leading onto the rooftops.

The rooftop corpse holds Perfumer’s Cookbook [2]. This cookbook expands crafting with:

The cookbook is found on a corpse on a small rooftop reached from the upper room north of the Inner Gate.

A Hefty Beast Bone lies along the route, while a Gold Firefly can be collected inside one of the buildings.

6. Lower the shortcut

Near the upper battlements, you can kick down a ladder. This connects the upper section to the route near Shaded Castle Ramparts, giving you a much faster return after a death.

Before taking the lift to the boss, search the side areas for the remaining Smithing Stone and material pickups. Once you are ready, take the lift to the upper bridge.

7. Find Patches

After the relevant Volcano Manor progression, Patches appears injured beside the bridge of statues outside Elemer’s boss room. He gives you the Dancer’s Castanets, which are intended for Tanith at Volcano Manor.

Speak to Patches and exhaust his dialogue before leaving. The encounter is easy to miss because it is off the direct route and can be skipped if you enter the fog immediately. Guides generally place this meeting after the Volcano Manor and Rykard stages of his quest.

Return to Volcano Manor and give the Dancer’s Castanets to Tanith. The item does not produce a major reward from Tanith, but it is part of Patches’ quest progression.

8. Defeat Elemer of the Briar

Enter Castellan’s Hall through the golden fog. Elemer is a large humanoid boss who fights with the Marais Executioner’s Sword and Briar Greatshield.

His signature attacks involve remotely manipulating the sword. He can strike across the room, sweep around the arena and punish healing at medium range. Staying close to him can be safer than retreating, provided you can recognise his shield attacks and delayed sword swings.

Practical tactics

Elemer’s arena contains visual clues about the castle’s history, including House Marais equipment and imagery connected with Malenia. This is not a separate collectible or quest state, but it reinforces the relationship between the Marais household, the castle and Maleigh Marais’ fixation on the Valkyrie.

The boss room then becomes Castellan’s Hall, a Site of Grace.

Practical tactics: Defeating Elemer awards

House Marais

House Marais ruled the Shaded Castle and served as its castellan family and executioners. The family’s history is tied to the castle’s judicial function and to the executioner weapon later wielded by Elemer.

Maleigh Marais, the former castellan, is not found inside the castle. He appears in the rocky wilderness to the west, at a separate location. He should therefore be treated as a nearby story-associated character rather than a resident of the dungeon.

Maleigh’s dialogue and equipment descriptions connect House Marais with Malenia. He is described as sickly, as are the sons of House Marais, and became obsessed with Malenia after obtaining the Valkyrie’s Prosthesis. The castle’s interior reflects that fixation through its prosthetic imagery and Malenia-related visual details.

Elemer of the Briar

Elemer was held at the castle for execution. He escaped by taking the Marais family’s executioner sword and using techniques associated with his homeland of Eochaid. He then took control of the castle and brought about House Marais’ ruin.

Elemer is also connected to the recurring Bell Bearing Hunter boss encounters elsewhere in the game. Those encounters are separate fights and should not be treated as additional bosses inside The Shaded Castle. The castle’s Elemer encounter is the true dungeon boss.

Patches

Patches is a visitor whose appearance depends on his broader quest progression. He is not a member of House Marais and does not operate a shop at the castle. His role is limited to handing over the Dancer’s Castanets and moving on after his dialogue is exhausted.

Servants of Rot and castle enemies

The castle contains several enemy types associated with rot, poison or the decay of the abandoned stronghold. Their presence does not mean that the castle is a settlement of the Kindred of Rot. The enemies are a mixture of castle inhabitants, scavengers and creatures occupying the poisoned basin.

---

The following named enemy types are documented within The Shaded Castle’s enemy set:

The Royal Revenant is among the most dangerous regular enemies in the dungeon. It can appear abruptly in confined areas and rapidly punish close-range characters. The Cleanrot Knight guarding the prosthesis is also a serious threat because it combines high durability with strong pressure in a restricted room.

Major rewards

The Champion’s Song painting is found within the castle, but its reward is not claimed there. As with other paintings, examining the artwork gives a visual clue leading to a separate location. Treat the painting as a collectible and puzzle trigger rather than a local reward.

Named loot and pickups directory

The castle also provides crafting materials such as Altus Bloom, Grave Violet, Thin Beast Bones, Mushroom, Toxic Mushroom, Miranda Powder, Poisonbloom, Beast Blood and Trina’s Lily. These are ordinary world pickups rather than unique quest rewards.

What is fixed and what is not

---

Poison swamp

Poison accumulates quickly in the lower courtyard and reduces movement speed. The best approach is usually to cross directly between safe stone surfaces rather than clear the entire swamp.

If you are carrying enough boluses, the poison is an inconvenience rather than a genuine wall. If you are low on healing or boluses, use the raised ruins and rooftops to reduce exposure.

Scarlet Rot plants

The Miranda Sprouts near the rooftop route can build Scarlet Rot quickly. Do not stand in their gas clouds while fighting other enemies. Pull them from range, rush past them or use fire damage to remove them.

Corpse grabs

The corpse-like enemies are weak but dangerous in groups. Their grab animations cause rapid Poison build-up. Kill the first enemy before it reaches you, then move through the area rather than allowing several to surround you.

Royal Revenant

The Revenant can turn a routine search into a sudden death. Keep your camera centred, listen for its arrival and avoid being trapped against a wall. Healing miracles are particularly effective against Revenants, but the castle does not require a faith build if you simply avoid prolonged close combat.

Rooftop shortcuts

The dungeon is easier on a second attempt because the upper ladder can be kicked down, creating a shortcut from the ramparts. Lower it before attempting Elemer if you want a safer route back to the boss.

Millicent’s quest

The important castle state is the availability of Valkyrie’s Prosthesis. You can obtain it before fighting Elemer. Giving it to Millicent at Erdtree-Gazing Hill advances her quest.

The item is not permanently lost merely because you defeat the boss, but quest progression can be affected by moving Millicent through later stages before delivering it. If you are following her quest, collect the prosthesis before pushing deep into later Altus Plateau content.

Patches’ quest

Patches’ castle appearance is tied to his broader quest and the Volcano Manor sequence. He appears on the bridge before Elemer’s arena and gives the Dancer’s Castanets. Exhaust his dialogue before leaving.

Because Patches’ quest has several location changes, he may not appear if earlier stages were completed in an unusual order, if he was killed, or if his next location has already been triggered. The castle encounter is a visitor state, not a permanent resident state.

Boss defeat

Defeating Elemer does not turn the castle into a settlement or unlock a shop. It creates the Castellan’s Hall Site of Grace and awards the boss weapons. The ordinary enemies and pickups follow the usual Elden Ring dungeon rules.

---

The Shaded Castle is a ruined judicial stronghold rather than a conventional military fortress. House Marais served as executioners and castellans, which explains the executioner weapon, the hall’s ceremonial architecture and the castle’s association with condemned prisoners.

Elemer’s story is an inversion of that role. He was brought to the castle to be executed, but instead took the executioner’s sword and turned the institution against its owners. The castle is therefore both a prison and the place where House Marais lost its authority.

The later occupation by poison creatures and decaying enemies reflects the collapse of that order. The castle has not been rebuilt or repurposed into a functioning settlement. It is a stagnant, contaminated ruin occupied by scavengers, hostile remnants and the surviving consequences of Elemer’s takeover.

The Malenia connection is deliberately indirect. Maleigh Marais’ interest in the Valkyrie’s Prosthesis and the visual material in Castellan’s Hall suggest an obsessive fascination rather than an alliance between House Marais and Malenia. The Cleanrot Knight carrying the prosthesis also creates a physical connection between the castle and Malenia’s wider story, although the knight’s presence does not establish that the Cleanrot Knights control the dungeon.

Before leaving The Shaded Castle, check that you have:

---

Is The Shaded Castle required to finish Elden Ring?

No. It is an optional Altus Plateau dungeon. You can complete the main story without defeating Elemer.

Where is The Shaded Castle?

It is in northern Altus Plateau, in a poisonous basin near the route towards Mt Gelmir. The easiest approach is from Erdtree-Gazing Hill, travelling east and then north through the valley.

How do I get inside?

Jump over the outer wall using the rocks on the castle’s north-western side. Torrent’s double jump makes the entrance much easier.

Where is Valkyrie’s Prosthesis?

It is in a chest inside an upper room, along a side route from the lower courtyard. A Cleanrot Knight guards the room.

Is Patches inside the castle?

Patches appears on the bridge outside Elemer’s boss arena, not as a regular castle resident. His appearance depends on his quest progression.

Does the castle contain a shop?

No. There is no functional merchant, smith, upgrade service or spirit tuner within The Shaded Castle.

What do I get for defeating Elemer?

Elemer drops the Marais Executioner’s Sword and Briar Greatshield. His defeat also unlocks the Castellan’s Hall Site of Grace.

Is the Bell Bearing Hunter a second boss here?

No. Elemer of the Briar is the dungeon boss. The Bell Bearing Hunter is a separate recurring boss encounter found at other locations.

Can I skip the poison?

You can reduce exposure by using the ruins, rooftops and raised stone paths, but some swamp crossings are unavoidable. Boluses, quick movement and a willingness to run past minor enemies are usually more efficient than attempting to clear every creature.
