Wailing Dunes

Wailing Dunes is the vast battlefield in southern Caelid where General Radahn holds back the stars.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • The Wailing Dunes are a distinct location within Caelid, separate from Redmane Castle and the War-Dead Catacombs.
  • The area’s main event is the Starscourge Radahn boss fight, available only after the Radahn Festival begins.
  • You can summon numerous NPC cooperators during the battle, including Blaidd, Alexander, Lionel, Okina and Great Horned Tragoth.
  • After Radahn dies, the dunes gain the Starscourge Radahn Site of Grace and Alexander appears nearby if his questline has been progressed.
  • Radahn rewards 70,000 runes, Radahn’s Great Rune and the Remembrance of the Starscourge.
  • Radahn’s defeat causes a star to fall in Limgrave, opening the route into Nokron, Eternal City.
  • The War-Dead Catacombs entrance is at the northern edge of the dunes, but the catacombs are a separate dungeon with their own enemies, boss and loot.

About this guide

Base game scope. This guide covers the Wailing Dunes in Elden Ring and its directly associated Radahn Festival content. The nearby War-Dead Catacombs are treated as a separate dungeon rather than as an internal subarea of the dunes. The guide does not cover the Shadow of the Erdtree version of Radahn, Elden Ring Nightreign, or other continuities.

Overview

The Wailing Dunes are a vast coastal sand basin in south-eastern Caelid and the arena for the Radahn Festival. The area is defined by its red sand, enormous weapon piles and the remains of the warriors who fought during the Shattering. At its centre, Starscourge Radahn wanders in a state of madness caused by Scarlet Rot, devouring the corpses of friend and foe alike.

Unlike most open-world areas in Elden Ring, the Wailing Dunes are reached through a one-way sending gate associated with Redmane Castle. Before the festival begins, the arena is inaccessible. Once the festival is active, the player is transported to the dunes and can begin the Radahn encounter. After Radahn’s defeat, the area becomes a more conventional explorable location, with a Site of Grace and access to Alexander’s next quest encounter.

The dunes are small in terms of permanent content, but they are important to several major progression threads. Defeating Radahn opens the route to Nokron, advances Ranni’s storyline, changes the state of Redmane Castle and is required to access Shadow of the Erdtree.

Location and boundaries

The Wailing Dunes lie on the eastern coast of Caelid, south-east of the main Caelid landmass. They are visually distinct from the surrounding scarlet landscape. Instead of dense rot growth, cliffs and ruined settlements, the dunes consist mainly of exposed red sand, low ridges and enormous heaps of discarded weapons.

The playable area is primarily the broad desert arena surrounding Radahn. The Redmane Castle sending gate deposits the player at the northern edge of the arena, near the coast. Radahn initially stands on a high dune towards the centre. The southern and eastern edges lead towards the sea and are not conventional routes into other surface regions.

The northern end contains the entrance to the War-Dead Catacombs. This entrance is physically embedded in the same coastal landscape, but the catacombs have their own loading transition, map identity, Site of Grace, enemy population and boss. They should therefore be treated as a neighbouring dungeon, not as an internal chamber or subarea of the Wailing Dunes.

Geography and visual character

The dunes are one of the starkest battlefield locations in the game. The sand is littered with swords, spears and other weapons thrust into the ground. These piles serve both a narrative and practical purpose. They represent the remains of the warriors gathered for Radahn’s final battle, and they can provide temporary cover from his opening arrow volleys.

The arena is made up of several large undulating dunes rather than a flat circular floor. Radahn’s position on the central high ground gives him a clear line of sight over much of the starting area. The uneven terrain can interrupt ranged attacks, obscure summon signs and make it difficult to judge Radahn’s distance while riding Torrent.

There are no normal buildings, houses, roads, shops or civil settlements in the dunes. The area is a battlefield and burial ground rather than a functioning community.

Access and routes

Entering from Redmane Castle

The normal route begins at Redmane Castle. Once the Radahn Festival is active, speak with Castellan Jerren and use the route through the castle chapel. Take the lift down towards the shore and activate the sending gate. The gate transports the player directly to the Wailing Dunes.

The sending gate is not available in its festival state from the beginning of the game. Radahn’s battle becomes available when the festival has been triggered. The festival can be activated by several progression conditions, including reaching Altus Plateau, discussing Radahn with Blaidd in Siofra River or speaking with War Counselor Iji about Jerren’s plans.

Entering the arena

After using the sending gate, the player arrives on the northern shore of the arena. Radahn is visible at a distance on a high dune. The battle begins as soon as the player advances far enough into the arena, although the opening arrow fire begins immediately.

Torrent can be summoned during the encounter. This is particularly useful for crossing the exposed sand, avoiding arrow volleys and reaching distant golden summon signs.

Leaving the area

Before Radahn is defeated, the arena functions primarily as a boss zone. After the battle, the player can rest at the Starscourge Radahn Site of Grace and use fast travel. There is no ordinary settlement exit, road network or merchant route leading out of the dunes.

Radahn Festival

The festival is organised by the Redmane forces as an honourable final battle for their commander. Radahn has been reduced to a mindless, starving creature by the Scarlet Rot that consumed him after the Battle of Aeonia. The gathered warriors are intended to give him a warrior’s death while also claiming his Great Rune.

The festival state affects Redmane Castle. In the active festival configuration, the castle’s usual courtyard boss encounter is unavailable. After Radahn’s defeat, speaking with Jerren and reloading the area restores the castle’s normal state, including the Misbegotten Warrior and Crucible Knight encounter. This change is associated with Redmane Castle rather than the Wailing Dunes themselves.

Festival-associated named characters

Jerren is present as the festival organiser and can appear as a phase-two cooperator. The other characters are either summonable allies or story-associated participants rather than permanent residents of the dunes.

Festival-associated named characters

Residents, visitors and NPCs

The Wailing Dunes have no ordinary civilian population. Their human presence consists of warriors gathered for the festival, temporary summon signs and quest-related appearances.

Blaidd the Half-Wolf

Blaidd can be summoned for the Radahn fight after the relevant dialogue in Mistwood. His summon sign appears among the signs scattered throughout the arena. He is a visitor and cooperator, not a permanent inhabitant.

Alexander, Warrior Jar

Alexander participates in the Radahn Festival if his questline has been advanced far enough. He can be summoned during the fight. After Radahn is defeated, Alexander appears beside the Site of Grace in the Wailing Dunes. Speak to him and exhaust his dialogue before moving on. This advances his journey to the next location.

Alexander’s post-battle position is easy to miss because it is not required to leave the arena or progress the main story.

Castellan Jerren

Jerren oversees the festival from Redmane Castle and can be summoned during the second phase of the Radahn fight. His appearance in the arena is therefore encounter-specific. He is not found wandering the dunes after the battle.

Other cooperators

The fight can offer a large number of NPC allies. Summon signs appear repeatedly around the arena, and a sign disappears after use but may be available again elsewhere. Up to six NPC cooperators can be summoned at one time according to the boss encounter documentation.

Patches is unreliable and leaves shortly after being summoned. The NPC roster can vary according to quest progression, so the presence of a sign is not guaranteed if the associated character’s conditions have not been met.

Other cooperators: The available festival cooperators are

Boss: Starscourge Radahn

Starscourge Radahn is the only boss in the Wailing Dunes proper. He is an optional base-game boss and a Shardbearer. His fight is available only once the Radahn Festival has begun.

Opening phase

Radahn begins by firing large arrows across the arena. The arrows track the player and can be avoided by riding Torrent, changing direction sharply or using the embedded weapon piles as cover. The weapon clusters are destructible, so they cannot be relied upon indefinitely.

As the player approaches, Radahn switches to close-range attacks with his twin blades. His horse, Leonard, allows him to cross the arena rapidly. The fight therefore punishes slow movement and poorly timed healing.

Gravity attacks

Radahn uses gravity-based attacks throughout the battle, including gravity waves, Cragblade-style weapon attacks and spells that pull the player towards him. Remaining on Torrent improves mobility, but dismounting at the right moment can sometimes make it easier to avoid low sweeping attacks.

Second phase

At around half health, Radahn launches into the sky and returns as a flaming meteor. This impact can kill an unwary player or destroy several summoned allies at once. He also gains additional gravity attacks, including four floating rocks that can be launched at the player or allied summons.

Status effects

Radahn is vulnerable to several status effects, including Scarlet Rot, Bleed and Frostbite, although his resistances rise during the fight. The large arena and numerous summon signs make status-based strategies practical, but success depends on being able to apply the effect safely while Radahn is distracted.

Practical battle advice

  1. 01
Mount Torrent immediately after entering if you are using a mobility-focused strategy.
  2. 02
Move between weapon piles during the opening arrow sequence.
  3. 03
Activate summon signs while approaching Radahn rather than stopping in the open.
  4. 04
Keep moving once Radahn mounts a close-range attack.
  5. 05
Re-summon defeated allies when their signs reappear.
  6. 06
Watch the sky carefully when Radahn reaches roughly half health.
  7. 07
Do not remain directly beneath the meteor’s return path.
  8. 08
Use the arena’s width to separate Radahn from your summons.
  9. 09
Remember that the NPC allies are expendable. Their purpose is to divide Radahn’s attention.
  10. 10
Collect the rewards and rest at the new Site of Grace after victory.

Rewards and acquisitions

Radahn’s Great Rune

The Great Rune is awarded after Radahn’s defeat. It must be restored at the Divine Tower of Caelid before it can be equipped and activated with Rune Arcs.

Remembrance of the Starscourge

The Remembrance can be consumed for 40,000 runes or traded with Finger Reader Enia at Roundtable Hold. Its two unique exchange options are:

The Remembrance can also be duplicated at an appropriate Wandering Mausoleum, subject to the normal duplication rules.

Radahn’s Spear

Radahn’s Spear is not a ground pickup in the arena. It becomes available for purchase from Finger Reader Enia after Radahn is defeated. The spear can then be bought repeatedly for 800 runes.

Post-battle Alexander encounter

Alexander does not provide the major boss rewards, but speaking with him after the fight is important for his questline. He is found near the Starscourge Radahn Site of Grace after victory.

War-Dead Catacombs: neighbouring dungeon

The War-Dead Catacombs are at the northernmost point of the Wailing Dunes. They become accessible after Radahn has been defeated. The entrance is easy to overlook because it is positioned against the cliff face at the far end of the arena.

The catacombs are not part of the Radahn boss arena. They contain their own dungeon layout, undead enemies and Scarlet Rot hazards. The dungeon’s enemies include spectral Redmane and Cleanrot warriors, reflecting the fact that both sides of the Battle of Aeonia were buried together. Scarlet Rot is a major environmental danger inside.

---

Recommended catacomb route

  1. 01
Start at the Starscourge Radahn Site of Grace.
  2. 02
    Ride north across the dunes.
  3. 03
Follow the cliff line until you find the sealed-looking catacomb entrance.
  4. 04
Enter only after Radahn has been defeated.
  5. 05
Bring preserving boluses or a reliable Scarlet Rot cure.
  6. 06
Take care around the spectral warriors, which can fight one another as well as the player.
  7. 07
Treat the dungeon as a separate exploration route, not as an extension of the boss arena.

Progression changes after Radahn

Radahn’s defeat has consequences well beyond Caelid.

Starfall in Limgrave

After the battle, a star falls into Limgrave. The resulting crater appears near Fort Haight and Mistwood and opens the route into Nokron, Eternal City. This is central to Ranni’s storyline and the search for the Fingerslayer Blade.

Redmane Castle

The castle’s festival configuration ends after the battle. Speak with Jerren and reload the area to restore the ordinary castle state. This allows the Redmane Castle courtyard boss encounter to become available again.

Alexander’s questline

Alexander’s appearance near the Site of Grace marks the next stage of his journey. Missing this conversation does not permanently destroy his questline, but it can make his later locations less obvious.

Ranni’s questline

Radahn’s death allows the stars to resume their movement. One of those falling stars creates the entrance to Nokron, which is required for the next major stage of Ranni’s quest.

Shadow of the Erdtree access

In the base game’s progression requirements, Starscourge Radahn must be defeated before the player can access the Realm of Shadow. Mohg, Lord of Blood must also be defeated. Radahn’s defeat alone is not sufficient.

---

Hazards and secrets

Arrow volleys

The opening arrows are the most immediate hazard. Their size and tracking can make ordinary sprinting unreliable. Weapon piles provide cover, but they break under repeated impact.

Open terrain

The arena has little permanent protection. Staying still to cast, heal or adjust equipment is dangerous unless Radahn is distracted by summons or blocked by terrain.

Meteor return

The phase-two meteor is the most lethal single attack in the area. Watch Radahn’s position rather than focusing only on his health bar.

The open dunes themselves are not a Scarlet Rot swamp, but the neighbouring War-Dead Catacombs contain severe Scarlet Rot hazards. Do not confuse the visual battlefield remains in the dunes with the rot pools found in the dungeon.
