About this guide

Scope: Base game Elden Ring. This guide covers the catacombs dungeon itself, not the surrounding Wyndham Ruins, the nearby Tibia Mariner encounter, or the wider Mt Gelmir routes. Spoilers: This page discusses the dungeon’s layout, loot, traps and boss.

Overview

Wyndham Catacombs is an optional catacomb dungeon on the boundary between the southern Altus Plateau and the eastern foot of Mt Gelmir. Its entrance is concealed among the upper ruins of Wyndham Ruins, making it easy to mistake the surrounding landmark for the dungeon itself. The catacombs are a compact but unusually dangerous side area built around lightning traps, rising spike mechanisms, flooded chambers and a variant of the Erdtree Burial Watchdog.

The dungeon is worthwhile for upgrade materials, a Stonesword Key treasure, a talisman, a cookbook and the Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearing [1]. The bell bearing is the main progression reward, as it allows the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold to sell Grave Glovewort [1] to [3], improving access to early spirit-ash upgrades.

Wyndham Catacombs has no quest-giving NPC, merchant, faction hub or alternate story route. Its importance is practical: it is an optional dungeon with a useful spirit-upgrade reward and several items aimed at characters entering the Altus Plateau or approaching Mt Gelmir.

Boundaries and neighbouring areas

Wyndham Catacombs is a separate dungeon from Wyndham Ruins. The ruins are the open-air landmark above and around the entrance, while the catacombs begin at the sealed doorway found among the higher ruined structures. The ruins contain their own enemies, collectible items and a Tibia Mariner encounter, none of which should be counted as part of the catacombs’ internal loot table.

The dungeon is also separate from the routes leading west towards Seethewater River, north-west towards Gelmir Hero’s Grave and Mt Gelmir, and east towards the central Altus Plateau. These areas connect geographically but do not form subareas of Wyndham Catacombs.

The dungeon itself has one named Site of Grace and one main boss arena. Its lower flooded section is a concealed internal chamber rather than a separate named subarea.

Geography and approach

Wyndham Catacombs lies just behind the upper part of Wyndham Ruins. The most straightforward approach is from Erdtree-Gazing Hill, travelling north towards the ruins. Once inside the ruins, climb through the broken structures and look for the entrance at the rear of the highest section. The doorway is built into the cliffside and is easier to identify after climbing the ruin steps rather than searching around ground level.

Other approaches are possible from the wider Altus Plateau and Mt Gelmir road network. The exact route depends on whether the player entered Altus through the Grand Lift of Dectus, the Ruin-Strewn Precipice or the Mt Gelmir side of the map. Wyndham Catacombs has no special access requirement beyond reaching its entrance.

The dungeon is manageable for most characters who have reached Altus Plateau, but several precautions help:

Sites of Grace

Internal layout

From the entrance, the catacombs descend into a network of stone corridors. The first important branch leads towards a room containing a lift and a series of lightning traps. Other corridors use guillotine-style hazards and narrow approaches designed to punish rushing.

The dungeon’s lighting and architecture resemble other catacombs, but the electrical hazards distinguish Wyndham from the fire-pillar layouts of some earlier dungeons. Watch for the trap activation points on the floor. They can fire lightning through the corridor, so advance from cover and avoid repeatedly triggering the same mechanism while fighting.

A flooded area forms the dungeon’s lower section. It contains hostile corpses and large crabs, as well as several items. The water makes movement and camera control more awkward, so it is safer to clear enemies before collecting loot. The lower chamber is reached through the rising-floor mechanism described below.

Walkthrough

1. Activate the Site of Grace

Enter the dungeon and activate the Wyndham Catacombs Site of Grace. This gives you a safe return point before dealing with the traps and the boss.

From the entrance, follow the main route and inspect side rooms before committing to the deeper corridors. Catacomb enemies often hide against walls or among the stonework, so move slowly around corners.

2. Deal with the lightning traps

Several corridors contain floor mechanisms that trigger lightning. The safest approach is to identify the activation point, trigger it from a controlled position and retreat until the discharge finishes. If enemies are present, try to draw them beyond the trap rather than fighting directly on top of it.

The dungeon’s lightning theme continues into the boss fight, but the traps are often more dangerous than the regular enemies because they can interrupt attacks and make retreat routes unsafe.

3. Reach the Stonesword Key room

A route on the right eventually leads through the guillotine area and towards a flooded section with a ladder. At the top is a sealed fog wall requiring a Stonesword Key.

Use the key to enter the room and collect:

The talisman raises lightning attack power but reduces damage negation. It can be useful for lightning-focused builds, though the defensive penalty matters in an area where traps and the boss both use lightning damage. The item is optional and does not affect access to the boss.

4. Open the boss route

Continue through the catacombs until you reach the room with the rising floor and spike-covered ceiling. The floor begins to rise when stepped on, threatening to crush the player against the spikes.

To pass safely, step onto the moving floor and immediately move or roll off it onto the surrounding ledge. The floor will continue upwards without you. This exposes an opening beneath it, allowing access to the hidden lower section.

The route on the far side also leads towards the mechanism that opens the boss doors. An Imp and a Gold Dragon Cult Knight guard the area around the lever. Defeat them before pulling it, as the cramped room makes it easy to be interrupted. The lever opens the double doors leading to the Erdtree Burial Watchdog.

5. Explore the hidden lower chamber

After sending the spike floor upwards, drop through the opening into the lower chamber. Search the room and nearby corpse locations for:

Two large crabs can appear in this lower flooded section. They are dangerous at close range and can hit through the water’s awkward movement, so lure them into a clearer area where possible.

The cookbook unlocks recipes associated with ancient dragon cult crafting. It is found on a corpse in the lower section and is easy to miss if the player simply crosses the spike-floor room and pulls the boss lever.

6. Collect the remaining upgrade materials

The catacombs contain several glovewort items, including Grave Glovewort [4], Grave Glovewort [5] and Ghost Glovewort [6]. Their exact placements are spread across the main corridors, side rooms and lower section. Search beside coffins, corpses and the edges of the flooded rooms rather than following only the critical path.

A Smithing Stone [5], Glass Shard and Grave Violet are also listed among the dungeon’s loot. Some enemy drops, such as Smithing Stone [5] from certain Imps or Leyndell soldiers, should not be confused with fixed treasure pickups.

7. Defeat the Erdtree Burial Watchdog

Return to the boss corridor and pass through the now-open double doors.

Boss: Erdtree Burial Watchdog

The Wyndham Catacombs Watchdog is a sword-wielding variant with a lightning-infused tail and lightning attacks. It has 3,419 HP and awards 12,000 runes on defeat. The reward is Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearing [1].

Practical strategy

Stay near the boss’s side rather than directly in front of it, but do not remain behind the tail indefinitely. Medium-range attacks are useful because they encourage the Watchdog to perform predictable slams, creating openings after the animation ends.

Melee characters should prioritise patience over trading hits. One or two attacks after a slam are generally safer than attempting a long combo. Ranged characters can keep distance, but should avoid firing from directly in front of the boss if it causes the lightning breath attack.

Spirit summons can draw the Watchdog’s attention and create openings, although the boss’s area attacks can destroy fragile summons quickly. A tougher summon is more useful than a large number of weak targets.

Upon victory, collect the Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearing [1]. Give it to the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold to unlock purchases of Grave Glovewort [1], [2] and [3]. This is a permanent progression reward rather than a consumable drop.

Attacks to watch for

Attacks to watch for
NameDetails
Sword swingsThe Watchdog’s large weapon has considerable reach. Avoid rolling too early, especially when it begins a slow, deliberate swing.
Floating slamThe boss rises before crashing down. The delay is designed to catch early rolls. Wait until the descent begins, then roll away or towards a safe angle.
Lightning breathKeep moving laterally when the Watchdog prepares a lightning discharge from its mouth.
Tail lightningThe tail can punish players standing behind the boss for too long.
Repeated ground slamsAfter a slam sequence, the Watchdog often leaves a short opening before resuming its pattern.

Residents and enemies

Wyndham Catacombs has no friendly residents, merchants, quest NPCs or named visitors. Its population consists of hostile dungeon creatures and one boss.

Verified enemy directory

The dungeon’s enemy listings vary slightly between reference pages, particularly where ordinary enemies and their variant names are grouped. The Gold Dragon Cult Knight is associated with the ladder and lever route in walkthrough descriptions, while Leyndell Knight is listed among the dungeon’s broader enemy types.

Enemy drops and random loot

Not every item associated with Wyndham Catacombs is a fixed pickup. Imps and soldiers may provide ordinary enemy drops, including Smithing Stone [5] at low rates. These should be treated as random farming drops, not guaranteed dungeon rewards.

Items and collectibles

Fixed or location-based loot directory

Some sources report multiple Grave Glovewort [4] and [5] pickups, while walkthroughs differ in whether every instance is grouped together or described by room. Treat the ranks above as confirmed item types, with multiple placements possible.

Crafting and material drops

The wider enemy and environmental material list includes:

These materials are gathered from corpses, plants, environmental pickups or creatures rather than all being guaranteed treasure in a single chest or corpse.

Checkpoints and progression

There is no lift connecting the catacombs to another region, no hidden exit into a separate dungeon and no story lock that changes the layout. The main progression change is local: pulling the lever opens the boss doors, while using the spike-floor mechanism reveals the lower loot chamber.

The Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearing [1] remains obtainable as long as the boss has not been defeated. There is no known quest state that removes the dungeon’s fixed treasure. The Lightning Scorpion Charm requires a Stonesword Key, so it is missable during the current visit if the player lacks one, but it can be collected later.

Hazards and secrets

Lightning pressure plates

The dungeon’s electrical traps are easier to handle if you trigger them deliberately. Do not sprint blindly through a corridor while fighting, because an enemy can push you onto a plate or interrupt your escape.

Rising spike floor

The spike-floor room is the dungeon’s main environmental puzzle. The safe solution is not to outrun the rising floor across the room. Instead, use it as a moving platform, then leave it so that it continues upwards and exposes the lower route.

Flooded lower chamber

The flooded area is not merely decorative. It contains some of the dungeon’s most important loot and the large crabs. Search the chamber after activating the spike floor rather than assuming it is inaccessible.

Stonesword Key door

The Lightning Scorpion Charm is useful but not mandatory. If you are short of Stonesword Keys, prioritise the dungeon’s main route and bell bearing, then return later.

Lore and thematic details

Wyndham Catacombs follows the broader visual and mechanical language of Erdtree catacombs. These burial complexes are protected by Erdtree Burial Watchdogs, stone guardians whose staffs, swords and supernatural attacks imply a role as ancient tomb custodians. The Watchdog encountered here is particularly aligned with the dungeon’s lightning imagery, using an electrically charged tail and lightning breath rather than simply repeating the most basic Watchdog presentation.

The presence of Gold Dragon Cult Knights and the Ancient Dragon Apostle’s Cookbook [1] also connects the dungeon thematically to Leyndell’s dragon-cult traditions. This does not establish that the catacombs were built by dragon-cult devotees, but it explains the lightning emphasis and the placement of ancient dragon-related crafting knowledge.
