Introduction

Caelid Catacombs is a small optional dungeon in southern Caelid. It is built into the cliffside below the Cathedral of Dragon Communion, west of Redmane Castle and close to the Impassable Greatbridge. Unlike the nearby War-Dead Catacombs, it is not connected to the Radahn battlefield and does not contain a major story event. Its principal purpose is to provide Grave and Ghost Glovewort, a hidden Spirit Ash reward and a Cemetery Shade boss fight.

The dungeon is short and mostly linear, but its Scarlet Rot pools make it more dangerous than its size suggests. The most important trick is that the boss door is not opened by an obvious mechanism. The lever is hidden behind an illusory wall in the final room.

Location and boundaries

Caelid Catacombs belongs to Caelid proper, not Greyoll’s Dragonbarrow. It is on the southern side of the region, near the road approaching Redmane Castle. The dungeon entrance is recessed into the cliff below the Cathedral of Dragon Communion. A nearby Giant Crow can make the approach unpleasant, particularly if you are travelling from the Impassable Greatbridge.

The nearest convenient overworld reference point is the Impassable Greatbridge Site of Grace. From there, travel west along the cliff and look for the catacomb statue and entrance area. Some walkthrough routes first pass a Somber Smithing Stone [4] scarab before reaching the entrance, although that scarab and the nearby Crow are overworld encounters rather than part of Caelid Catacombs itself.

Nearby but separate

The distinction matters because Caelid contains several similarly named underground areas. War-Dead Catacombs, in particular, is a separate and considerably more elaborate dungeon found in the Radahn battlefield. It contains a Putrid Tree Spirit and different rewards, including Redmane Knight Ogha and a Golden Seed. It is not a subarea of Caelid Catacombs.

Geography and dungeon layout

Caelid Catacombs is compact and largely linear. Its rooms descend gradually from the entrance towards the boss, with the central environmental feature being a low Scarlet Rot pool. The water is not merely decorative. Standing in it builds Scarlet Rot, so the safest approach is to move between dry ledges, kill enemies from solid ground where possible and use a cure if the status bar becomes dangerous.

The dungeon therefore has a deliberately misleading structure. The apparent final room looks as though it leads nowhere, while the real progression mechanism is concealed in the wall behind the pillar.

Named directory: places and facilities

There are no verified shops, merchants, buildings, named residents or quest-giving NPCs inside the dungeon.

The layout contains two important illusory walls

  1. 01
The first is in the rot-filled room below the stairs. It hides Miranda Sprout Ashes and two Grave Glovewort [5].
  2. 02
The second is in the final room, behind the central pillar. It hides the lever that opens the Cemetery Shade’s door.

Access and recommended preparation

There is no key or quest requirement for the entrance. You can reach Caelid Catacombs as soon as you can travel through southern Caelid, although the region’s enemies can be punishing for a new character.

Preserving Boluses cure Scarlet Rot immediately. They are especially useful if you accidentally become trapped in the water while fighting the larger Miranda Sprouts.

Suggested approach

For most characters, the most practical route is:

Enemies and hazards

Skeletons

Skeletons appear in the ordinary passages and rooms. As elsewhere in Elden Ring, they can revive after being knocked down unless their remains are struck again. This is particularly inconvenient near the Scarlet Rot pools, where finishing a fallen skeleton may force you into hazardous ground.

Miranda Sprouts

Miranda Sprouts are the dungeon’s other regular enemy. They are stationary plants that attack from a distance and can make the narrow rooms uncomfortable. Their projectiles and the surrounding rot encourage a quick, controlled approach rather than prolonged fighting.

The dungeon also contains a larger Miranda Sprout in the rot-filled room. Clear it before collecting the Ghost Glovewort and before searching the hidden wall. The most reliable method is to attack from the edge of the pool, retreat to dry ground and repeat.

Scarlet Rot water

Scarlet Rot is the main environmental hazard. It causes rapid health loss after the status bar fills, so it is usually better to accept a small amount of enemy damage than to stand in the pool while trying to complete a fight.

These names describe the verified dungeon enemy types. The Giant Crow encountered near the entrance is an overworld enemy and should not be counted as an interior resident.

Items and collectibles

Upgrade materials

The dungeon is valuable mainly for Spirit Tuning materials. The verified inventory is:

The walkthrough evidence agrees on the Glovewort quantities. Grave Violet is listed by dungeon inventories, although exact pickup positioning is less consistently described in route guides. Treat it as a collectible crafting material rather than a guaranteed single named corpse item.

Miranda Sprout Ashes

The Miranda Sprout Ashes are behind the first illusory wall. Enter the rot-filled room below the stairs and inspect the wall beneath or beside the stair structure. Strike suspicious walls rather than searching only for a visible doorway.

The Ashes summon Miranda Sprouts, making them thematically appropriate for the dungeon. They are a fixed collectible, not a random drop.

Kindred of Rot Ashes

Kindred of Rot Ashes are the fixed reward for defeating the Cemetery Shade. They are not found in a chest and cannot be collected before the boss is defeated.

Walkthrough

1. Activate the Site of Grace

Enter the dungeon and activate the Caelid Catacombs Site of Grace. This also provides a convenient reset point if Scarlet Rot or the first groups of enemies cause trouble.

The dungeon’s Summoning Pool is available further inside. Activate it as you pass if you intend to use cooperative help.

2. Collect the first Glovewort

Proceed along the opening corridor and collect the Grave Glovewort [4]. Continue towards the next corner for Grave Glovewort [3]. Watch for Skeletons and avoid rushing into the next room without checking the floor.

3. Enter the rot-filled room

Descend into the room containing Scarlet Rot water and Miranda Sprouts. There are several Glovewort pickups here, including Grave Glovewort [3], Ghost Glovewort [3] and Ghost Glovewort [4].

Lure the larger plant towards a dry area if possible. If the room becomes crowded, retreat up the stairs rather than fighting in the middle of the pool.

4. Find the first illusory wall

Search the wall beneath or beside the stairs. Strike it to reveal a small hidden alcove containing:

This is the dungeon’s most substantial hidden reward. If you leave the room without checking the wall, it is easy to assume the Ashes are absent.

5. Continue to the final room

Move onwards through the corridor and into the final chamber. Collect the two Grave Glovewort [4] plants in the room.

A boss door is visible, but it will remain closed until the lever is activated.

6. Reveal the boss lever

Inspect the central pillar in the final room. Strike the illusory wall behind it to reveal a passage and lever. Pull the lever, then return to the boss door.

The hidden lever is the main progression puzzle. There is no separate side route or alternate boss path inside this dungeon.

Boss: Cemetery Shade

The Cemetery Shade is a fast, teleporting humanoid enemy armed with curved blades. It has low durability compared with many Caelid bosses, but its speed and burst damage can punish slow attacks.

The boss is highly vulnerable to Holy damage according to boss guides, and Holy-affinity attacks or skills such as Sacred Blade can shorten the encounter considerably. Summoning a Spirit Ash is also useful because the Shade frequently changes targets, creating openings for back attacks or charged strikes.

Melee strategy

Stay close enough to punish its recovery animations, but do not commit to long attack strings. One or two hits followed by a dodge is safer than attempting a full combo. The Shade’s teleport often places it behind or beside you, so avoid locking yourself into slow attacks.

Holy damage is particularly effective. A weapon buff or Holy Ash of War can be more valuable here than raw physical damage.

Ranged and magic strategy

The Shade’s teleporting makes slow projectiles unreliable. Use spells with quick travel time, tracking or a wide hitbox. Wait until it finishes a lunge or blade sequence before attacking.

Do not retreat too far across the arena. The Shade’s ranged attack is more troublesome when you are trying to maintain a large distance.

Boss rewards

The 6,800-rune reward is specific to the Caelid Catacombs encounter. Cemetery Shades elsewhere in the game have different rewards and rune values, so do not confuse this fight with the versions in Tombsward Catacombs or Black Knife Catacombs.

Lore and atmosphere

Caelid Catacombs reflects the broader environmental identity of southern Caelid. Its burial architecture has been overtaken by Scarlet Rot, while Miranda Sprouts occupy the flooded chambers and the final reward is a Spirit Ash associated with rot-afflicted creatures.

The dungeon does not contain a named NPC, quest inscription or major lore item that directly explains its history. Its storytelling is environmental rather than textual. The contrast between a conventional burial site and the invasive rot growth reinforces Caelid’s wider transformation after the conflict between Malenia and General Radahn. Caelid’s Scarlet Rot landscape is tied to that wider regional catastrophe, but the catacombs themselves do not provide a separate account of the battle.
