About this guide
Base-game scope. This guide covers the Carian Study Hall itself in Elden Ring, including its upright and inverted states, and explains the connected route to the Divine Tower of Liurnia. The Divine Tower, its bridge encounter and the wider eastern Liurnia landscape are treated as neighbouring areas rather than silently folded into the Study Hall.
Overview
The Carian Study Hall is a small but unusually important dungeon on the eastern side of Liurnia of the Lakes. It is a tall, circular scholarly tower built on the cliffs above the lake, close to Jarburg and south-east of the Church of Vows. Its ordinary interior is a vertical library occupied by spectral Carian defenders and Preceptor Miriam, while its hidden state turns the building upside down and opens the route towards the Divine Tower of Liurnia.
Unlike a conventional legacy dungeon, the Study Hall is designed around a progression-state change rather than a single uninterrupted clear. The first visit is a fight through an upright tower. The second visit, after receiving the Carian Inverted Statue from Ranni, is a traversal puzzle through the inverted structure. The two states contain different routes, enemies and rewards, so a complete exploration requires returning after progressing Ranni’s quest.
The Study Hall is also a junction between several major quest threads. Its upper route leads to the Divine Tower of Liurnia, where the player can obtain the Cursemark of Death, an important item in Fia’s storyline. The tower therefore links Ranni’s quest, Fia’s quest and the broader lore of the Carian royal family, the Two Fingers and the curse of Destined Death.

Canonical location directory
The last four entries are neighbouring locations rather than subareas of the Study Hall.
---
The Study Hall is a vertical circular structure with a chapel-like entrance, a large central library and a series of balconies, staircases, lifts and rafters. The dungeon’s architecture is deliberately difficult to read because Miriam repeatedly relocates around the central void while the player climbs.
Canonical location directory
Entrance hall
The entrance hall contains the Study Hall’s Site of Grace and the pedestal used for the Carian Inverted Statue. Before the statue is placed, the hall presents a normal, upright route deeper into the building. After activation, the same room becomes the starting point for the inverted version.
The statue is not found inside the hall. It is obtained from Ranni after delivering the Fingerslayer Blade. This distinction matters because the Study Hall can be entered before the relevant quest progression, but the player cannot complete its hidden route at that stage.
Upright library
The upright route leads through the main library, where the player fights spectral Carian defenders while pursuing Preceptor Miriam. The room is broad but vertically open, with enemies and projectiles attacking from balconies and distant platforms.
The most notable upright-state collectible is the Carian Glintstone Staff, found on a corpse in the upper part of the normal tower. It is particularly relevant to characters using Carian sword sorceries.
The main navigation principles are
- 01Use the pillars and bookshelves as cover from Miriam’s magical attacks.
- 02Watch the upper walkways before committing to a lift or staircase.
- 03Search balconies and side platforms before climbing to the next major level.
- 04Expect Miriam to retreat or relocate after taking damage.
- 05Treat the rafters as a combat area rather than a safe shortcut.
Rafters and upper lift
The upper rafters are narrow wooden beams above the main library. They are dangerous because Miriam can continue attacking while the player is crossing them. Falling is often more dangerous than the enemies themselves, especially when the player is forced to turn around or move between beams.
A careful approach is to eliminate nearby spectral enemies before crossing long stretches, then use the rafters’ supports as partial cover. Ranged players should avoid assuming that distance makes the section safe, since Miriam’s attacks remain effective across the central shaft.
Inverted interior
Placing the Carian Inverted Statue changes the Study Hall’s internal orientation. The building is not merely given a visual filter: the player must navigate ledges, ceilings and reversed architectural features that were inaccessible or meaningless in the upright state. The change is permanent for that playthrough once activated, though the player can continue to use the Study Hall and revisit its areas.
The inverted route begins by dropping from the entrance area towards the central shaft. The player moves across narrow ledges and inverted platforms while avoiding Fingercreepers and other hazards. Miriam appears again in this state, using the altered geometry to attack from positions that are difficult to reach directly.
The inverted interior is best understood as a separate progression state of the same dungeon rather than as a conventional optional side room.
---
Entering the Study Hall
The entrance is open without a key item. You can reach the Site of Grace and explore the first part of the upright dungeon before beginning Ranni’s quest.
The tower is not locked behind a dungeon key. Its major restriction is progression, not physical entry.
A useful early route is
- 01Travel to the Eastern Tableland Site of Grace.
- 02Follow the road towards the eastern cliffs.
- 03Descend towards the tower entrance.
- 04Activate the Study Hall Entrance Site of Grace.
- 05Enter the upright Study Hall and decide whether to clear Miriam immediately or return later.
Obtaining the Carian Inverted Statue
The statue comes from Ranni the Witch. The relevant sequence is:
The statue is therefore a quest reward, not a dungeon pickup. Sources consistently place it after the player gives Ranni the Fingerslayer Blade.
Obtaining the Carian Inverted Statue: steps
- 01Progress Ranni’s quest until access to Nokron, Eternal City.
- 02Defeat Starscourge Radahn, allowing Nokron’s route to open.
- 03Find the Fingerslayer Blade in Nokron.
- 04Give the blade to Ranni.
- 05Receive the Carian Inverted Statue.
- 06Return to the Study Hall.
- 07Examine the pedestal in the entrance hall.
- 08Re-enter the tower in its inverted state.

Preceptor Miriam
Preceptor Miriam is the Study Hall’s principal named enemy and the only major character permanently associated with the building. She is a Carian preceptor who fights as a hostile spectral figure rather than as a conversational NPC.
Miriam’s battle is unusual because it is a pursuit encounter. She does not remain in one arena. Instead, she retreats through the tower, forcing the player to climb while dealing with spectral soldiers and ranged magical attacks. Her preferred tools include a powerful magical bow attack and other sorceries used from long range.
The two encounters should be treated as distinct placements of the same named enemy. They are not a single boss with a conventional second phase.
Miriam appears in both progression states
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Upright Miriam | encountered while climbing the ordinary tower. |
| Inverted Miriam | encountered during the reversed route. |
Spectral Carian defenders
The Study Hall’s ordinary enemies are spectral Carian soldiers and nobles associated with the tower’s magical and aristocratic identity. Their exact placement changes between the upright and inverted states.
They are most dangerous when combined with Miriam. The player can be pressured from several directions while trying to cross a narrow platform, and some enemies are positioned to punish a rushed chase.
Fingercreepers
Fingercreepers occupy parts of the inverted route. Their wall-crawling movement and sudden attacks make them especially threatening when the player is already dealing with reversed platforms and limited footing.
Factions and affiliation
There is no merchant, smith, friendly tutor or ordinary resident operating inside the Study Hall.
Character directory
The last three characters should not be listed as Study Hall residents. They are connected through progression, not physically located there.
---
Ordinary enemies
The Study Hall contains several types of spectral and magical enemies. Their distribution depends on the dungeon state, and some enemies are encountered only after the tower has been inverted.
Verified enemy categories associated with the Study Hall include:
The exact number of individual enemies can vary in player-facing lists depending on whether the upright and inverted states are counted together and whether the connected bridge is included. For that reason, enemy directories should not combine every nearby encounter under a single undifferentiated “Study Hall enemies” heading.
Combat advice
Against Miriam
Miriam’s most important weakness is the time required to perform some of her attacks. Close-range characters can often make progress by sprinting between cover points and attacking during the recovery of her bow animation.
The fight is not a traditional boss battle, so there is no boss fog, remembrance or standard boss arena.
Inverted-state hazards
The inverted version is less about enemy density and more about movement risk. The player should:

Items in the connected Divine Tower
These are reached through the Study Hall but are not physically part of the library.
Stargazers’ Heirloom
Some item lists associate the Divine Tower route with the Stargazers’ Heirloom. Because the tower and Study Hall are often grouped together in walkthroughs, it is important to identify its placement as a Divine Tower reward rather than automatically describing it as a Study Hall pickup.
Cursemark of Death
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Upper section of the Divine Tower of Liurnia. |
| Type | Key item. |
| Use | Progresses Fia’s storyline and reveals important information about Ranni and the death of Godwyn. |

Collectible checklist
Divine Tower route
---
Part 1: Clearing the upright Study Hall
The exact order in which Miriam changes position can feel different if the player runs past enemies or approaches from unusual angles. The important principle is to keep climbing while preserving cover.
Part 1: Clearing the upright Study Hall: steps
- 01Enter from the eastern Liurnia road and activate the Study Hall Entrance Site of Grace.
- 02Examine the pedestal if you already have the Carian Inverted Statue. Do not activate it until you have finished collecting the upright-state rewards.
- 03Take the main lift or staircase into the library.
- 04Use shelves, pillars and walls to limit Miriam’s line of sight.
- 05Defeat the spectral enemies on each platform before chasing Miriam.
- 06Continue upwards as she retreats through the tower.
- 07Search side platforms and balconies, particularly around the upper lift.
- 08Collect the Carian Glintstone Staff.
- 09Continue into the rafters.
- 10Defeat upright Miriam.
- 11Collect Magic Downpour.
- 12Return to the entrance and prepare for the second state.
Part 2: Inverting the Study Hall
- 01Return to the entrance-hall pedestal with the Carian Inverted Statue in your key items.
- 02Examine the pedestal and allow the tower to change orientation.
- 03Move towards the central shaft and identify the first safe ledge.
- 04Drop carefully rather than making blind jumps.
- 05Search walls and side platforms for Fingercreepers.
- 06Follow the inverted architecture towards the central route.
- 07Locate and defeat inverted Miriam.
- 08Collect Lucidity and the Mask of Confidence.
- 09Continue until the route opens towards the exterior bridge.
- 10Activate the bridge-side Site of Grace where available.
- 11Decide whether to fight the Godskin Noble on the bridge or sprint past it.
- 12Enter the Divine Tower of Liurnia.
Part 3: Reaching the Cursemark of Death
The Divine Tower is a separate area, although the Study Hall is its required approach. The tower’s bridge is guarded by a Godskin Noble, which can be fought or bypassed depending on the player’s equipment and objective.
The Cursemark is the most important reason many players complete the inverted Study Hall even when they have little interest in its sorceries or armour.
---
Once inside
- 01Reach the Divine Tower of Liurnia.
- 02Explore the tower’s internal route.
- 03Use lifts and stairways to climb.
- 04Search the upper area for the corpse associated with the Cursemark of Death.
- 05Collect the Cursemark.
- 06Continue Fia’s quest from the appropriate later location.
Jarburg
Jarburg lies below the Study Hall and is a separate village location. Its proximity makes it easy to mistake the two places for one connected settlement, but the Study Hall has no village services and no direct internal route into Jarburg.
Jarburg is associated with Jar-Bairn, Diallos, and the Living Jar storyline. Those characters and events should be documented under Jarburg rather than under the Study Hall.
Church of Vows
The Church of Vows is north-west of the Study Hall and is associated with Miriel, Pastor of Vows, the turtle pope, as well as the Celestial Dew absolution service. It is not a Study Hall facility.
Artist’s Shack
The Artist’s Shack is a separate small location along the eastern Liurnia route. It provides a painting and related reward trail, not a Study Hall service.
Divine Tower of Liurnia
The Divine Tower is the Study Hall’s principal destination. Its access route is intentionally hidden behind Ranni’s quest progression, and the inverted tower acts as the key to reaching its bridge. Walkthroughs often combine the two locations because a player normally visits them consecutively, but their boundaries remain distinct.
---
The Study Hall presents itself as a Carian scholarly institution rather than a military fortification. Its bookshelves, celestial equipment, noble imagery and preceptor guardians suggest a place devoted to astronomical and magical study.
The inversion is more than a navigation trick. It exposes the relationship between the Carian scholarly world and the Divine Tower, making the player physically cross a boundary between the study of the heavens and the tower associated with the divine order. Ranni’s statue acts as the instrument that reveals this hidden relationship.
Preceptor Miriam’s presence also implies that the Study Hall was guarded by a member of the Carian intellectual class. Her spectral state suggests that the place has been abandoned or transformed, while her continued hostility indicates that the tower’s old loyalties have not simply disappeared.
The Cursemark of Death gives the location wider significance. Through the tower, the player discovers that Ranni and Godwyn were involved in the split fate of the cursemark. This links the Study Hall to:
These are narrative connections rather than evidence that every associated character physically visited the Study Hall.

Completionist route
Use this route if you want every fixed Study Hall reward:
Completionist route: steps
- 01Visit the Study Hall before inverting it.
- 02Clear the upright library.
- 03Defeat Miriam.
- 04Collect Magic Downpour.
- 05Search the upper balconies for the Carian Glintstone Staff.
- 06Return after obtaining the Carian Inverted Statue.
- 07Invert the tower.
- 08Defeat Miriam again.
- 09Collect Lucidity.
- 10Collect the Mask of Confidence.
- 11Cross to the Divine Tower.
- 12Search the Divine Tower separately for the Cursemark and tower rewards.
Quest-focused route
Use this route if your immediate objective is Fia’s storyline:
This route risks leaving upright-state rewards behind, so completionists should clear the ordinary version first.
Quest-focused route: steps
- 01Progress Ranni until she gives the Carian Inverted Statue.
- 02Return to the Study Hall.
- 03Invert the tower.
- 04Follow the route to the Divine Tower.
- 05Collect the Cursemark of Death.
- 06Return to the wider game and continue Fia’s quest.
Melee-character route

Can I enter the Carian Study Hall early?
Yes. The entrance and upright portion are available before completing the relevant stage of Ranni’s quest.
Why can’t I reach the top?
You need the Carian Inverted Statue. Ranni gives it after you return the Fingerslayer Blade to her. Place the statue on the pedestal in the entrance hall.
Do I need to defeat Miriam?
Defeating Miriam is not required merely to enter the building, but it is necessary if you want the rewards associated with her encounters. The upright and inverted appearances provide different progression and collection opportunities.
Is the Divine Tower part of the Study Hall?
No. It is directly connected, but it is a separate named location. The Study Hall is the access dungeon; the Divine Tower is the destination beyond the bridge.
Is there a shop or merchant?
No. The Study Hall contains no shop, blacksmith, grace merchant or other purchasing service.
Is Carian Study Hall a legacy dungeon?
It is a named dungeon, but it is much smaller and more specialised than locations such as Stormveil Castle or Raya Lucaria. Its main design feature is the change between upright and inverted states.

This guide is written for the base game only. It excludes Shadow of the Erdtree, multiplayer-specific behaviour and fan-made map categories.
The main boundary issue is the relationship between the Study Hall, its bridge and the Divine Tower of Liurnia. Walkthrough sources routinely present them as one continuous objective because the inverted Study Hall leads directly to the tower, but they are separate named locations. This guide preserves that distinction.
Public guide sources also differ in how they count enemy placements and item lists. Some merge the Study Hall with the Divine Tower route, while others count upright and inverted encounters separately. For that reason, this guide uses location-based directories rather than claiming a single total enemy count. The accessible sources confirm the core progression, Miriam encounters, Carian Glintstone Staff, inverted-state rewards and Divine Tower connection, but do not provide a sufficiently authoritative, independently verified item-by-item map transcription for every minor consumable or random enemy drop. Those minor entries are therefore not claimed as a complete exhaustive database.
