Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • Buy the Crafting Kit from Merchant Kalé early It unlocks the crafting menu and is one of the most useful purchases in Limgrave.
  • Use the smithing table beside the ruins It can reinforce weapons during the early game, but it does not replace a proper blacksmith for higher upgrades.
  • Return at night after obtaining Torrent Renna may appear and give the Spirit Calling Bell and Lone Wolf Ashes.
  • Do not confuse the church with the nearby road and Tree Sentinel encounter The Tree Sentinel patrols outside the location, not inside the church grounds.
  • The church has no Sacred Tear, Golden Seed or conventional boss Its importance comes from its NPCs, services and progression triggers.
  • Visit Kalé after hearing Blaidd in Mistwood Ruins Asking about the howling gives the Finger Snap gesture, which is used to call Blaidd down from the ruins.

About this guide

Base game location guide Region: Limgrave Type: Overworld church ruin, merchant stop and early-game facility Recommended progression: Immediately after leaving the Stranded Graveyard Major spoilers: This guide covers early NPC encounters, Blaidd’s introduction and Ranni’s first appearance.

Overview

The Church of Elleh is one of the first useful locations in Elden Ring. It stands a short distance north of The First Step, in the western part of Limgrave, and is usually the player’s first dependable merchant stop after entering the open world. Although the church is small and contains no dungeon, boss arena or major treasure cache, it provides several systems that shape the opening hours of the game: crafting, early weapon reinforcement, ranged equipment, basic consumables and, under the right conditions, the Spirit Calling Bell and Lone Wolf Ashes.

The location is also an important meeting point for three characters and quest threads. Merchant Kalé remains here as a shopkeeper. Renna, who is later revealed to be Ranni the Witch, can appear at night after the player receives Torrent. Kalé can also direct the player towards Blaidd the Half-Wolf after the player hears his howling in Mistwood.

Included subareas

The Church of Elleh is small enough that its subareas are functional rather than formally named.

Church interior

The roofless interior contains Merchant Kalé, the Site of Grace and the smithing table. The building itself has no hidden basement, dungeon entrance or boss chamber.

Church exterior

The exterior grounds contain the approach from the road and enough space to avoid or disengage from the Tree Sentinel. The exterior is also where Renna’s nighttime appearance is normally encountered.

Surrounding road

The road is a neighbouring traversal space rather than a subarea of the church. It is the route towards The First Step and the western Limgrave road network. The Tree Sentinel patrols this wider route.

From the Stranded Graveyard

The Tree Sentinel is deliberately placed as an early warning against treating every visible enemy as an immediate objective. A new character can reach the church safely without fighting it.

From the Stranded Graveyard: steps

  1. 01
Leave the Stranded Graveyard through the tutorial exit.
  2. 02
Reach The First Step Site of Grace and activate it.
  3. 03
    Travel north along the road.
  4. 04
Watch for the Tree Sentinel on the open route.
  5. 05
Either ride or sprint past it, or approach the church from cover and avoid engaging.
  6. 06
Enter the ruins and activate the Church of Elleh Site of Grace.

From The First Step

The Church of Elleh is directly north of The First Step. This is the shortest and most natural route. If the Sentinel is still alive, ride past it rather than stopping in the middle of the road.

From Gatefront and central Limgrave

The church can be reached by travelling west from the Gatefront area and then following the road south-west towards The First Step. This route is more useful after visiting Gatefront Ruins, obtaining the Limgrave map fragment and unlocking Torrent.

Returning at night

Renna’s appearance is an early progression state. If the encounter no longer triggers, the Spirit Calling Bell and Lone Wolf Ashes can still be acquired later through the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold, according to the normal game progression. The church encounter itself is therefore useful but not permanently required for access to spirit summoning.

---

To check for Renna

  1. 01
Obtain Torrent through the early interaction with Melina.
  2. 02
    Use Torrent at least once.
  3. 03
Return to the Church of Elleh after changing the time to night.
  4. 04
Speak to the woman sitting near the church ruins.

Site of Grace

The Church of Elleh Site of Grace provides the usual functions:

It is one of the most convenient early-game return points because it is close to The First Step, the first merchant and the opening road into Limgrave.

Smithing table

A smithing table stands near Merchant Kalé. It allows the player to reinforce compatible weapons using runes and Smithing Stones. Early smithing tables are limited compared with a full blacksmith service. In practical terms, the Church of Elleh table is intended for the first few reinforcement levels, while later and stronger upgrades require Smithing Master Hewg at Roundtable Hold or another appropriate facility. The table is generally sufficient to take ordinary weapons to approximately +3, provided the player has the required materials.

---

Merchant Kalé

Merchant Kalé is the permanent resident associated with the church. He is a travelling merchant from the Nomadic Merchant people and is one of the first friendly NPCs encountered after the tutorial. He remains beside the ruins and provides the location’s main practical services.

Kalé sells supplies intended for a new character, including crafting equipment, ammunition, a torch, throwing daggers, a telescope, cookbooks and a basic shield. His most important purchase is the Crafting Kit, which costs 300 runes and unlocks item crafting.

Kalé’s verified shop inventory

Prices below are the standard values listed for the base-game merchant inventory.

The shop also lists limited quantities for some stock, particularly Furlcalling Finger Remedies and the Telescope. The Crafting Kit is the item most likely to have a lasting effect on a first playthrough because it enables the player to make fire pots, curing items, arrows and other field supplies.

Kalé and Blaidd

After the player visits Mistwood Ruins and hears Blaidd howling, returning to Kalé unlocks dialogue about the sound. Kalé explains that he knows the howling warrior and gives the Finger Snap gesture. The player can then return to Mistwood Ruins and use Finger Snap beneath the tower where Blaidd is perched.

The church therefore serves as the intermediary for the opening stage of Blaidd’s story, but Blaidd himself is not a resident of the Church of Elleh.

Renna and Ranni

After obtaining Torrent and using him at least once, the player can encounter Renna at the church at night. Renna gives:

The Spirit Calling Bell permits the use of Spirit Ashes in locations where spirit summoning is allowed. The Lone Wolf Ashes are the player’s first spirit summon in the normal progression route. Renna’s identity as Ranni the Witch is revealed later, so the early church scene is also an important piece of her character introduction.

If Renna does not appear

The encounter can be missed or bypassed by progressing beyond the early opening sequence. This does not permanently prevent spirit summoning. If the bell is not obtained at the church, it can later be purchased from the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold. The church remains the earliest and most thematically significant source, but not the only acquisition route.

Ordinary NPCs and factions

There are no ordinary civilian populations, soldiers, faction representatives or law-enforcement characters stationed at the church.

Kalé is associated with the Nomadic Merchants, but the church is not a Nomadic Merchant settlement. The ruins are simply the place where this particular merchant has established a temporary shop.

Tree Sentinel

The Tree Sentinel is the significant enemy near the Church of Elleh. It is a mounted field boss encountered on the open road, usually between the starting area and the church. It is not confined to the church grounds and does not need to be defeated to use the Site of Grace, speak to Kalé or obtain the church’s progression items.

Minor enemies

No fixed named boss or dungeon enemy group is associated with the church interior. Ordinary hostile wildlife and wandering enemies belong to the surrounding Limgrave overworld rather than to the church’s defined contents.

---

The Church of Elleh’s important acquisitions come mainly from characters and services rather than ground loot.

Items and rewards directly associated with the church

The exact ground-item arrangement can vary between the church’s visual clutter and merchant placement, but there is no verified Sacred Tear or Golden Seed belonging to the Church of Elleh. Sacred Tears are generally associated with churches that still contain a flask-enhancing relic, while this ruin functions instead as an early service location.

Nearby but separate rewards

Do not attribute the following to the church:

These places may be reached from the Church of Elleh, but they are not subareas of it.

Recommended exploration route

For a first playthrough, the following route avoids unnecessary difficulty:

This route makes the church a preparation point rather than an isolated destination.

---

Recommended exploration route: steps

  1. 01
    Leave the Stranded Graveyard.
  2. 02
    Activate The First Step.
  3. 03
Visit the Church of Elleh without challenging the Tree Sentinel.
  4. 04
Buy the Crafting Kit and reinforce a weapon.
  5. 05
Visit the nearby early Limgrave Sites of Grace until Melina appears.
  6. 06
Return to the church at night for Renna.
  7. 07
Explore Gatefront Ruins and obtain the early map information.
  8. 08
Travel east into Mistwood only when ready to investigate Blaidd’s howling.
  9. 09
Continue towards Stormhill and Margit after upgrading your weapon.

Avoiding the Tree Sentinel

The most common mistake is assuming that the mounted golden knight must be defeated before the church can be used. He does not block the church. Ride past him, enter the ruins and activate the Site of Grace. If he follows, rest at the Grace or use the church’s terrain to disengage.

Renna’s timing

Renna’s appearance depends on progression state and time of day. The safest method is to:

If she is absent, check Roundtable Hold later for the Spirit Calling Bell and Lone Wolf Ashes rather than assuming the playthrough is broken.

Finger Snap and Blaidd

Finger Snap is not purchased. It is a dialogue reward from Kalé after the Mistwood trigger. The important order is:

The gesture is a progression aid, not a general-purpose combat emote. Blaidd’s later story can continue through other routes even if this opening interaction is bypassed, although the church is the intended introduction.

---

The Church of Elleh is a ruined place of worship, but its gameplay role is more practical than doctrinal. Its broken walls and empty roof suggest the deterioration of religious sites across Limgrave, while Kalé’s presence connects the ruin to the displaced Nomadic Merchants. His dialogue and background tie those merchants to a wider history of persecution and burial beneath the capital, although the church itself does not provide a full exposition of that history.

The church also links three different kinds of knowledge:

Its apparently modest size is therefore misleading. The Church of Elleh is one of the game’s first examples of a location that functions simultaneously as a tutorial facility, a merchant outpost and a narrative junction.

---

Finger Snap and Blaidd: steps

  1. 01
    Visit Mistwood Ruins.
  2. 02
    Hear Blaidd’s howl.
  3. 03
    Return to Kalé.
  4. 04
    Ask about the howling.
  5. 05
    Receive Finger Snap.
  6. 06
Use the gesture beneath Blaidd’s position.

Named nearby enemy

Is the Church of Elleh a dungeon?

No. It is an overworld ruin with a Site of Grace, merchant, smithing table and NPC events. It has no dungeon route or internal boss.

Do I need to kill the Tree Sentinel?

No. The Tree Sentinel is nearby and can be bypassed entirely.

Where is the Church of Elleh?

It is in western Limgrave, north of The First Step and near the road leading into the early Limgrave overworld.

What should I buy from Kalé first?

The Crafting Kit is normally the best first purchase. After that, prioritise a suitable cookbook, ammunition or the Telescope depending on your build and remaining runes.

Can I get the Spirit Calling Bell if I miss Renna?

Yes. The bell and Lone Wolf Ashes can be obtained later through Roundtable Hold if the church encounter does not occur.

Why will Kalé not give me Finger Snap?

You must first visit Mistwood Ruins and hear Blaidd’s howling. Then return to Kalé and ask about the howling. If the relevant dialogue has already been bypassed by later progression, Blaidd’s quest may advance through another route.

Does the church contain a Sacred Tear?

No Sacred Tear is verified as part of the Church of Elleh’s contents. Do not confuse it with other Limgrave churches that contain flask-enhancing items.

Is Ranni really Renna?

Yes. Renna is the name Ranni uses during the early Church of Elleh encounter. Her identity becomes clearer later in the game.
