Key takeaways
- Gael Tunnel is a Caelid minor dungeon on the Limgrave border, not part of Fort Gael or the surrounding overworld.
- The main entrance is in western Caelid, near the border and south-west of the Forsaken Ruins. A second entrance lies on the Limgrave side.
- The Limgrave entrance is not the normal starting route Its internal door is locked from that side until opened from within the dungeon.
- Alexander can be found near the rear entrance during the relevant stage of his quest. Opening the internal door lets him continue his journey towards Caelid.
- The final boss is a Magma Wyrm, which drops Moonveil and a Dragon Heart.
- The dungeon contains a Cross-Naginata, upgrade materials, crafting materials and several minor consumables.
About this guide
Base game scope. This guide covers Gael Tunnel in Elden Ring as it appears in the original game, excluding Shadow of the Erdtree and treating the Limgrave-side entrance, the main Caelid route and the boss section as one connected dungeon.
Overview
Gael Tunnel is a small but unusually useful mine dungeon in western Caelid. It is built into the borderland between Caelid and Limgrave and functions as both a dangerous early route into Caelid and a shortcut between the two regions. Its most important rewards are the Cross-Naginata, the Moonveil katana and a Dragon Heart, while the tunnel also contains a temporary appearance by Alexander, Warrior Jar.
The dungeon is easy to underestimate. Its entrance is close to western Limgrave, but the enemies, narrow ledges and boss can punish a character who has arrived too early. It is also one of the locations where the game’s map geography, NPC progression and dungeon layout intersect: the Caelid entrance is the main approach, while the Limgrave-side entrance begins as a locked rear access point.
Overview and boundaries
Gael Tunnel is a mine running through the rocky borderland between western Caelid and Limgrave. The game treats it as a Caelid dungeon, although its western end opens towards Limgrave. This distinction matters when using maps, planning routes and following Alexander’s quest. The tunnel should not be confused with Fort Gael, which is a separate Caelid location south-east of the tunnel, or with the other tunnels scattered throughout the Lands Between.
The rear entrance is a genuine part of the same dungeon rather than a separate cave. It is useful as a shortcut after the internal door has been opened, but it is not normally a complete alternative route into the dungeon at the beginning.
Named-location directory
Geography and external connections
Gael Tunnel lies in western Caelid, close to Limgrave’s eastern boundary. The Caelid entrance is cut into a rock face and is reached by travelling south-west from the Forsaken Ruins area. The dungeon is also north of Fort Gael, although Fort Gael is not an internal subarea of Gael Tunnel.
The tunnel’s location makes it a useful early border crossing. A player travelling east from Limgrave can enter Caelid without approaching through the main roads near the Dragon-Burnt Ruins or using the dangerous southern routes. Conversely, a player exploring Caelid can emerge into Limgrave through the rear entrance once the internal door has been unlocked.
Nearby named places
These are neighbouring or associated locations, not subareas of Gael Tunnel:
The Shack of the Rotting is particularly relevant as a nearby Limgrave reference point for the rear approach, while Fort Gael is a separate fortress in Caelid and should not be included in a Gael Tunnel completion list.

Entrances and access routes
Main Caelid entrance
The main entrance is in western Caelid, on the rocky border with Limgrave. From the nearby Forsaken Ruins area, travel south-west towards the cliff face. The entrance is guarded by soldiers and is the intended way to enter the dungeon for the first time.
Inside, the opening section contains a vertical shaft. Rather than walking along a conventional mine corridor, you must descend by dropping onto a series of wooden platforms. The lower landing leads to the main dungeon and the Gael Tunnel Site of Grace.
Rear Limgrave entrance
The rear entrance is on the Limgrave side, near the border and close to the Shack of the Rotting. It has its own Site of Grace, Rear Gael Tunnel Entrance, and a door that cannot initially be opened from that side. The door is opened from inside the dungeon by reaching the opposite side and interacting with it.
This makes the rear entrance a poor first approach but a very convenient return route. Once the door is open, it gives faster access to the upper and middle sections of the tunnel and to Alexander’s position.

Subareas and internal layout
Gael Tunnel is compact, but its vertical structure can make it feel larger than it is. Its practical sections are:
These are descriptive sections rather than separate map locations. The game’s named location hierarchy remains Gael Tunnel, with the rear entrance separately named as a Site of Grace and access point.
Caelid entrance shaft
The first challenge is the descent. The platforms are narrow, and falling directly to the bottom can cause damage or death. Move from ledge to ledge rather than attempting a single long drop. The soldiers around the upper section can make the descent more dangerous if they are allowed to attack while you are positioning yourself.
Lower mine passages
The lower tunnel contains miners, soldiers and side chambers holding upgrade materials and consumables. The layout rewards checking alcoves rather than sprinting directly towards the boss. Some enemies are positioned to attack from darkness or from behind corners, so a shield, torch or lantern can make the first visit safer.
Land Octopus chamber
One side area contains a Giant Land Octopus and the corpse carrying the Cross-Naginata. This is one of the most valuable non-boss pickups in the dungeon. The weapon is not obtained from the boss and does not require completing Alexander’s quest.
Rear entrance and Alexander area
The Limgrave-side door leads to the rear entrance and Alexander’s location during his Gael Tunnel visit. Alexander is not a permanent resident of the dungeon. He is a travelling NPC whose position changes as his quest progresses.
Boss approach
The final corridor leads to the fog gate for the Magma Wyrm. Before entering, search the nearby chambers for remaining loot and make sure you have used the Site of Grace if necessary. The boss arena is reached from the Caelid side, while the unlocked rear route provides a quicker return for repeated attempts.

Residents, enemies and characters
Alexander, Warrior Jar
Alexander is the only named NPC associated with Gael Tunnel. This is an optional stage of his wider questline and follows his earlier encounter in Limgrave. At Gael Tunnel he is found near the rear entrance, blocked by a door. Progress through the dungeon from the Caelid side, open the door from within and speak to him to continue his journey.
Alexander does not function as a merchant, trainer or permanent summon here. His role is conversational and quest-related. He is also not the same as the hostile living jars found elsewhere in the game.
His Gael Tunnel appearance is progression-sensitive. If you have moved his quest forward, he may no longer be present. The available evidence confirms his position and the door-opening requirement, but this guide does not treat every possible quest trigger as independently verified.
Ordinary enemies
The Radahn Soldiers reinforce the dungeon’s connection to Caelid and the military presence associated with General Radahn. The miners are the main source of ordinary upgrade-material drops and are generally more resistant to slashing attacks than to strike damage. Land Octopuses occupy the wetter, wider chambers and can punish close-range attacks with grabs and sweeping tentacle strikes.
The Giant Land Octopus is especially important because it guards the Cross-Naginata pickup. It is possible to collect the weapon without clearing every enemy in the chamber, although doing so is safer after dealing with the octopus.
Boss: Magma Wyrm
The dungeon’s boss is a Magma Wyrm. Defeating it awards:
The Magma Wyrm is a large draconic creature that attacks by charging through the arena while leaving or spreading molten lava. Its body and weapon cover a considerable area, while the arena itself is cramped enough that careless positioning can leave the player trapped against a wall or in lava.
Practical approach
The exact difficulty varies substantially with build, weapon level and player experience. Moonveil’s reward makes this boss attractive to Intelligence and Dexterity characters, but the dungeon can be completed without needing a specific build.
Boss: Magma Wyrm
Practical approach
- 01Enter with enough healing to survive an extended fight.
- 02Stay to the boss’s side or rear when possible rather than standing directly in front of it.
- 03Watch the floor after every charge. The lava trail can remain dangerous after the boss has moved away.
- 04Avoid attacking during a long forward charge unless you are certain the boss will pass safely.
- 05Use the wider edges of the room to create space, but do not back yourself into the walls.
- 06Strike the head when a safe opening appears. Heavy attacks, stance damage and well-timed charged attacks can create a critical-hit opportunity.
- 07If using spirit ashes or an online ally, spread out rather than clustering directly in front of the boss.
Items and collectibles
The following items are associated with Gael Tunnel in the base game. Loot placement should be treated separately from random enemy drops and crafting-material gathering.
Fixed or notable loot
The published location lists also record Cracked Crystal and Silver Firefly as crafting materials found in or associated with the tunnel. These should not be confused with one-off treasure pickups, since crafting-material availability can involve multiple gathered items and enemy or environmental collection.
The Cross-Naginata
The Cross-Naginata is found on a corpse in the chamber with the Giant Land Octopus. It is a spear with a distinctive blade and strong reach, making it useful for characters who want thrusting attacks, bleed-related weapon setups or a weapon that can attack while maintaining distance.
It is easy to miss because the chamber is not on the most direct line to the boss. If you are exploring specifically for the weapon, take the side route before committing to the Magma Wyrm.
Moonveil
Moonveil is the principal reason many players visit Gael Tunnel early. It is obtained only by defeating the dungeon’s Magma Wyrm. Its requirements and scaling make it particularly relevant to Intelligence and Dexterity builds, although obtaining it does not require joining a faction or completing an NPC quest.
Fixed or notable loot
| Item | Source or location | Importance |
|---|---|---|
| Cross-Naginata | Corpse in the Land Octopus chamber | Unique weapon pickup |
| Moonveil | Dropped by Magma Wyrm | Boss reward |
| Dragon Heart | Dropped by Magma Wyrm | Remembrance-style dragon communion resource |
| Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot | Dungeon pickup | Temporary rune-gain consumable |
| Grace Mimic | Dungeon pickup | Consumable item |
| Large Glintstone Scrap | Dungeon pickup | Consumable projectile material |
| Golden Rune [5] | Dungeon pickup | Rune item |
| Somber Smithing Stone [1] | Dungeon pickup | Somber weapon upgrade |
| Somber Smithing Stone [2] | Dungeon pickup | Somber weapon upgrade |
| Smithing Stone [4] | Dungeon pickup | Standard weapon upgrade |

Checkpoints and facilities
There are no merchants, smithing tables, cookbooksellers, churches, map monuments or other permanent services inside the dungeon. The Sites of Grace are checkpoints and fast-travel locations only. Do not infer a shop or crafting service from the tunnel’s mining setting.
Gael Tunnel has two Sites of Grace
Recommended exploration route
If you only want to escape
If you entered accidentally or are badly under-levelled, prioritise survival:
The dungeon’s one-way feel comes from its initial locked rear door and the fact that the player often enters from the Caelid side without immediately recognising the exit route. The two Sites of Grace eventually make the area much easier to revisit.
First visit: safe completion route
- 01Approach from the Caelid entrance.
- 02Descend the shaft carefully, using each wooden platform rather than taking a long fall.
- 03Activate the Gael Tunnel Site of Grace.
- 04Clear or bypass the first soldiers and miners.
- 05Explore side chambers for Smithing Stones, Somber Smithing Stones and consumables.
- 06Follow the route towards the rear side of the dungeon.
- 07Open the locked door from inside to activate the Limgrave-side connection.
- 08Speak to Alexander if he is present.
- 09Return through the mine and search for the Land Octopus chamber.
- 10Defeat or evade the Giant Land Octopus and take the Cross-Naginata.
- 11Collect remaining loot near the boss approach.
- 12Rest at the Site of Grace before entering the fog gate.
- 13Defeat the Magma Wyrm for Moonveil and a Dragon Heart.
- 14Use the newly opened rear route for a quicker return to Limgrave, if desired.
If you only want to escape
- 01From the first Site of Grace, follow the main route rather than stopping to fight every miner.
- 02Use sprinting and rolling to pass soldiers.
- 03Avoid the Land Octopus chamber unless you want the Cross-Naginata.
- 04Reach the far-side door and open it.
- 05Rest at the rear Site of Grace.
- 06Fast-travel away once the grace is available.
Hazards and common mistakes
Falling during the entrance descent
The vertical opening is the most immediate environmental hazard. Do not treat the platforms as decorative scenery. Each drop should be measured, and a badly angled jump can kill a low-level character before the dungeon has properly begun.
Fighting in narrow corridors
The soldiers and miners are individually manageable, but the corridors restrict dodging. Pull enemies into wider spaces when possible, and avoid fighting multiple soldiers near a ledge.
Ignoring the rear door
Players who reach Alexander and leave without opening the internal door miss the dungeon’s most useful shortcut. Open the door before moving on, even if you do not intend to follow Alexander’s quest.
Entering the boss room too early
The Magma Wyrm’s arena is small, and the boss’s lava attacks reduce the safe floor further. Collecting the nearby loot first and resting at the grace makes repeated attempts less frustrating.
Confusing the tunnel with Fort Gael
Gael Tunnel and Fort Gael are separate locations. Fort Gael is an overworld fortress in Caelid with its own enemies, items and progression relevance. None of Fort Gael’s contents should be counted as part of a Gael Tunnel checklist.
Progression changes and missability
Gael Tunnel itself does not have a major world-state transformation comparable to Redmane Castle’s festival changes, but some associated content is progression-sensitive.
Alexander’s presence
Alexander’s appearance at the rear entrance belongs to his travelling questline. If the quest has advanced beyond this stage, he may no longer be there. The safest procedure is:
The dungeon’s items and boss reward are not dependent on completing Alexander’s dialogue.
Redmane Castle and the Radahn Festival
Alexander later appears at Redmane Castle and can participate in the Starscourge Radahn encounter. That later location is not part of Gael Tunnel. References to Radahn’s soldiers in the tunnel are environmental and enemy-related, not proof that the tunnel belongs to Redmane Castle or its festival area.
Boss and loot missability
The Cross-Naginata remains available as a dungeon pickup until collected, and Moonveil remains available through the Magma Wyrm fight. This guide does not identify a verified permanent missability trigger for either reward in the base game.
Alexander’s presence
- 01Meet Alexander in his earlier Limgrave encounter.
- 02Visit the Limgrave-side Gael Tunnel entrance.
- 03Enter the dungeon from Caelid.
- 04Open the internal door.
- 05Speak to Alexander before advancing his quest elsewhere.
Lore and environmental reading
Gael Tunnel is one of several places where Caelid’s military history is visible through ordinary enemy placement. Its miners, soldiers and rough subterranean construction make it feel less like a ceremonial dungeon and more like a working route that has been occupied or repurposed.
The presence of Radahn Soldiers suggests a connection to the wider military landscape of Caelid, but the game does not provide a detailed historical account of when or why the tunnel was excavated. The strongest environmental conclusion is that it is a mine or passage controlled by forces associated with Caelid, rather than a purpose-built fortress.
Alexander’s appearance gives the tunnel a second layer of meaning. He is not there because the dungeon is a permanent home for living jars. He is travelling through it as part of his personal ambition to become a great warrior. His brief presence links an otherwise conventional mine dungeon to one of the game’s most prominent character journeys.
