Key takeaways
- Do not judge the region by its easy access The Third Church portal can take a low-level character directly to Bestial Sanctum, but most of Dragonbarrow is substantially more dangerous than early Caelid.
- The region is broader than the dragon’s territory Dragonbarrow includes the western plateau, the central dragon-haunted road, the eastern fortlands and the Bestial Sanctum area.
- Fort Faroth is an important priority stop Its chest contains the right half of the Dectus Medallion, which can unlock the Grand Lift of Dectus when combined with the left half from Limgrave.
- Gurranq’s rewards are tied to Deathroot, not to ordinary Dragon Communion Bestial Sanctum is the main Dragonbarrow quest location and gives several incantations, a weapon and other rewards as Deathroot is delivered.
- Several dangerous encounters are optional Elder Dragon Greyoll, the Bell Bearing Hunter, the Night’s Cavalry, the Putrid Avatar and the Great Jar challenge can all be postponed.
- Dragonbarrow and southern Caelid should be kept separate Sellia, Gowry’s Shack, the Church of the Plague, Redmane Castle and the Swamp of Aeonia belong to the wider Caelid progression, even though they are closely connected to Dragonbarrow quests.
About this guide
Scope: Base game Elden Ring only. This guide treats Greyoll’s Dragonbarrow as the northern highland subregion of Caelid, including its named overworld locations, dungeons, merchants, field bosses and quest encounters. It does not fold the whole of Caelid into Dragonbarrow. Sellia, the Swamp of Aeonia, Redmane Castle, Gowry’s Shack and the Church of the Plague are discussed as neighbouring or connected Caelid locations rather than silently treated as part of Dragonbarrow.
Overview
Greyoll’s Dragonbarrow is the harsh, elevated northern half of Caelid. It is recognisable by its dark red earth, enormous dead trees, ruined forts and unusually powerful wildlife. The region is dominated by dragons, giant dogs, giant birds, vulgar militia, skeletal beasts and one immense sleeping dragon: Elder Dragon Greyoll.
Although it is possible to reach Dragonbarrow very early through a teleporter at the Third Church of Marika, it is not an early-game area in practical difficulty. Its ordinary enemies hit far harder than those in southern Caelid, and several bosses are scaled more like late-game encounters. The region is therefore best understood as an optional high-level branch of Caelid, not as a natural continuation of Limgrave.
Dragonbarrow is also one of the game’s most useful concentration points for unusual rewards. It contains the Bestial Sanctum and Gurranq’s Deathroot rewards, Fort Faroth and half of the Dectus Medallion, the Great-Jar’s Arsenal challenge, the Dragonbarrow Cave, the Isolated Merchant, a Minor Erdtree, a Night’s Cavalry encounter, and access to the Divine Tower of Caelid.
The normal road from Caelid
From southern Caelid, travel north-east along the main road. The map fragment for Dragonbarrow is found at the roadside stele near the approach to the plateau. From there, the road branches towards Dragonbarrow West, the central Minor Erdtree area and Fort Faroth.
This order avoids making Fort Faroth your first encounter with the area’s enemies, although the medallion half can be stolen early by sprinting through the fort.
A cautious first route is
- 01Enter northern Caelid and collect the Dragonbarrow map fragment.
- 02Activate Dragonbarrow West.
- 03Visit the Isolated Merchant’s Shack.
- 04Explore the western plateau and the Great-Jar approach.
- 05Return east towards the Minor Erdtree and Dragonbarrow Cave.
- 06Continue to Lenne’s Rise and Farum Greatbridge.
- 07Visit Bestial Sanctum.
- 08Finish at Fort Faroth, Greyoll and the Divine Tower route.
Third Church of Marika waygate
A waygate in the water north-east of the Third Church of Marika in Limgrave transports the player directly to the area outside Bestial Sanctum. It is one of the fastest ways to reach Gurranq and can be used before the player has explored Caelid properly.
After arriving, activate the Bestial Sanctum Site of Grace. The sanctum’s entrance is guarded by a hostile Black Blade Kindred. The boss is not required to enter, and a new character should simply ride past it.
Siofra River and the Great Jar
The Great Jar stands beyond a sealed approach in northern Caelid. The usual route is through the Siofra River Well in eastern Limgrave, using the lift and following the underground route towards the surface. This approach is distinct from Dragonbarrow’s ordinary road entrance.
The Great Jar’s challenge consists of three red summon signs representing hostile NPC builds. Their equipment and behaviour are based on player builds rather than fixed named characters, so they should not be treated as a permanent named enemy directory. Defeating all three without dying rewards Great-Jar’s Arsenal, a talisman that greatly increases maximum equip load.

Western Dragonbarrow
Eastern Dragonbarrow
Connected or boundary locations, not counted as Dragonbarrow proper
The distinction matters especially for quest guides. Gowry, Millicent and Master Lusat are linked to Dragonbarrow routes, but their actual locations are in or around Sellia and southern Caelid.
---
Dragonbarrow has fewer comfortable facilities than Limgrave. Its Sites of Grace are primarily travel anchors rather than safe settlements.
The Isolated Merchant is the region’s main conventional shop. The Bestial Sanctum is a quest facility rather than a shop, with Gurranq exchanging Deathroot for rewards. There is no inn, smithing station or populated town within Dragonbarrow itself.

Connected or boundary locations, not counted as Dragonbarrow proper
Important checkpoints include
Gurranq, Beast Clergyman
Gurranq resides in Bestial Sanctum. He accepts Deathroot, which can be obtained from several Tibia Mariner encounters and other locations involving Those Who Live in Death. In return, he provides Bestial incantations and other rewards. After handing over four Deathroot, he temporarily becomes hostile, but damaging him until he stops restores the interaction.
The rewards are tied to the number of Deathroot delivered, not to defeating the Black Blade Kindred outside the sanctum.
Gurranq’s reward sequence is
| Deathroot delivered | Reward |
|---|---|
| 1 | Clawmark Seal |
| 2 | Bestial Sling |
| 3 | Bestial Vitality |
| 4 | Ash of War: Beast’s Roar |
| 5 | Beast Claw |
| 6 | Stone of Gurranq |
| 7 | Beastclaw Greathammer |
| 8 | Gurranq’s Beast Claw |
| 9 | Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone |
Isolated Merchant
The Isolated Merchant sits in the Isolated Merchant’s Shack on the western side of Dragonbarrow. His stock is unusually useful for a region containing dragons and aggressive beasts.
Isolated Merchant’s stock
The shop inventory and prices are recorded in the Dragonbarrow merchant directory.
The Beast-Repellent Torch is especially convenient when crossing areas patrolled by dogs, although it does not remove every threat in the region. Dragonwound Grease is a limited consumable rather than an unlimited preparation.
Isolated Merchant’s stock
| Item | Cost | Quantity |
|---|---|---|
| Arrow | 20 runes | Unlimited |
| Bolt | 40 runes | Unlimited |
| Serpent Arrow | 120 runes | Unlimited |
| Dragonwound Grease | 3,000 runes | 2 |
| Gravel Stone | 2,000 runes | 10 |
| Spiked Caestus | 4,000 runes | 1 |
| Ritual Pot | 3,000 runes | 1 |
| Lost Ashes of War | 5,000 runes | 2 |
| Beast-Repellent Torch | 1,200 runes | 1 |
| Land of Reeds Helm | 1,000 runes | 1 |
| Land of Reeds Armor | 1,500 runes | 1 |
| Land of Reeds Gauntlets | 1,000 runes | 1 |
| Land of Reeds Greaves | 1,000 runes | 1 |
| Sacrificial Twig | 3,000 runes | 3 |
| Note: Gateway | 1,200 runes | 1 |
| Note: Hidden Cave | 1,200 runes | 1 |
Other named characters connected to Dragonbarrow
These characters are associated with Dragonbarrow routes but are not all physically resident within the subregion:
The NPC locations and their quest conditions are not interchangeable. For example, Millicent’s first Caelid appearance is at the Church of the Plague, while Gowry’s Shack is south of Sellia, not in Dragonbarrow.

Ordinary enemies
Enemy placement is fixed for the ordinary overworld, though some encounters are altered by time of day or quest state. The dragon groups around Greyoll are the defining hazard. The giant dogs and crows are also more dangerous here than their Limgrave equivalents because of Dragonbarrow’s high combat scaling.
Field bosses and major encounters
Elder Dragon Greyoll
Greyoll lies near Fort Faroth. She is surrounded by smaller dragons. Killing the smaller dragons drains Greyoll’s health, making a bleed weapon or ranged attack particularly effective. Defeating Greyoll awards a large rune payout and multiple Dragon Hearts, while the individual lesser dragons also provide rewards.
Greyoll is optional. Killing her does not open a required story route, but she is one of the region’s most visible major encounters.
Black Blade Kindred
A Black Blade Kindred guards the entrance to Bestial Sanctum. It is not necessary to defeat this enemy to meet Gurranq or use the Site of Grace. The fight rewards a weapon and incantations, but the boss is deliberately positioned as a deterrent to early access.
Night’s Cavalry
The Dragonbarrow Night’s Cavalry appears on the road near Lenne’s Rise at night. This is one of the stronger Night’s Cavalry encounters and rewards Ash of War: Bloodhound Step together with the Night’s Cavalry Set. The encounter is time-dependent, so resting until night is required.
Putrid Avatar
The Putrid Avatar at the Dragonbarrow Minor Erdtree uses Scarlet Rot attacks and has a high-damage leap and sweeping weapon attacks. It rewards Opaline Hardtear and Stonebarb Cracked Tear for the Flask of Wondrous Physick. The fight is optional but worthwhile for melee characters who can exploit its predictable openings.
Battlemage Hugues
Battlemage Hugues is found in Sellia Evergaol, which is in Caelid rather than Dragonbarrow proper. He should therefore be listed as a connected Caelid encounter, not as a Dragonbarrow boss.
Beastman of Farum Azula
The Dragonbarrow Cave boss is the Beastman of Farum Azula. Defeating him rewards the Flamedrake Talisman +2. The cave is a useful early target for players seeking a fire-damage defence talisman, though the demi-humans inside can overwhelm an unprepared character.
Great Jar Champions
The Great Jar challenge uses three red summon signs. These opponents are generated from player-style builds and are not fixed story NPCs. The reward is Great-Jar’s Arsenal. The challenge must be completed without dying during the active sequence, otherwise the set of champions refreshes.

Boss and encounter directory
Dragonbarrow Cave
Dragonbarrow Cave is a small cave dungeon containing demi-humans and a Beastman of Farum Azula. The main reward is the Flamedrake Talisman +2. It is an enclosed, close-range dungeon, so wide attacks, a shield and spirit summons are more useful than long-range kiting.
Fort Faroth
Fort Faroth stands near Greyoll and is one of Dragonbarrow’s most important buildings. Its bats and smaller enemies can inflict heavy damage, but the fort is worth entering even if the player intends to avoid Greyoll.
The right medallion half is in an upper chest reached by climbing through the fort. The Soreseal is found through a dangerous drop and platforming route. The fort is therefore a good place for a quick item raid even if the player is not yet ready to clear every enemy.
Bestial Sanctum
Bestial Sanctum is a large stone temple at the far north-east of the region. It contains:
The sanctum is connected visually and thematically to beastly and draconic architecture, but it is not a second version of Farum Azula or a route into that later area.
Lenne’s Rise
Lenne’s Rise is a tower containing a sealed upper chamber. The approach is guarded by a magical trap that can be avoided with Torrent. The tower is mainly useful as a landmark and as a source of a Memory Stone, which increases the number of equipped spell slots.
Minor Erdtree
The Dragonbarrow Minor Erdtree is east of the central road. Its Putrid Avatar boss guards the rewards for the Flask of Wondrous Physick. The fight is one of the clearer progression points in the region because the two Crystal Tears are useful across almost every build.
Divine Tower of Caelid
The Divine Tower of Caelid stands on the eastern side of the Dragonbarrow plateau. Its exterior platforming route is reached from the cliffs around the tower, not from an ordinary front door.
Radahn’s Great Rune can only be activated after defeating Starscourge Radahn. The tower is consequently connected to southern Caelid and the Radahn Festival, even though its physical location is in the Dragonbarrow landscape.
---
The tower has two distinct parts
- 01the upper tower, used to activate Radahn’s Great Rune;
- 02the lower interior dungeon, containing a Godskin Apostle boss.
High-priority fixed rewards
| Location | Reward or purpose |
|---|---|
| Fort Faroth | Dectus Medallion (Right) |
| Fort Faroth | Radagon’s Soreseal |
| Dragonbarrow Cave | Flamedrake Talisman +2 |
| Minor Erdtree | Opaline Hardtear and Stonebarb Cracked Tear |
| Lenne’s Rise | Memory Stone |
| Great Jar | Great-Jar’s Arsenal |
| Bestial Sanctum | Deathroot reward sequence |
| Divine Tower of Caelid | Radahn’s Great Rune activation |
| Isolated Merchant’s Shack | Beast-Repellent Torch, Spiked Caestus, Dragonwound Grease and other stock |
| Night’s Cavalry | Bloodhound Step and Night’s Cavalry Set |
| Greyoll and nearby dragons | Runes and Dragon Hearts |
Collectible categories
The exact contents of minor corpses and scarabs should be checked against a location map when doing a completionist sweep. The broad region directories agree on the named landmarks and major rewards, but a single prose guide should not pretend that every minor crafting plant or random wildlife drop has been independently catalogued here.
---
Route A: safe reconnaissance
- 01Take the Third Church of Marika waygate if you want immediate access to northern Caelid.
- 02Activate Bestial Sanctum and speak to Gurranq.
- 03Ignore the Black Blade Kindred unless you are prepared for a high-damage fight.
- 04Ride west to Farum Greatbridge, then north-west towards Lenne’s Rise.
- 05Activate Lenne’s Rise and obtain the Memory Stone.
- 06Continue to Dragonbarrow West.
- 07Visit the Isolated Merchant and purchase the Beast-Repellent Torch if you expect to cross the dog-infested routes.
- 08Return east and activate the central Sites of Grace.
- 09Enter Fort Faroth only when you are ready to sprint through bats and grab the medallion half.
- 10Finish at the Minor Erdtree, Dragonbarrow Cave and Divine Tower.
Route B: reward-focused sweep
If the purpose is to collect the most useful items with minimal boss fighting:
Route B: reward-focused sweep: steps
- 01Obtain the Dragonbarrow map fragment.
- 02Visit Fort Faroth and collect Dectus Medallion (Right).
- 03Loot Radagon’s Soreseal if you can handle the fort’s platforming route.
- 04Visit Lenne’s Rise for the Memory Stone.
- 05Go to the Isolated Merchant’s Shack.
- 06Enter Dragonbarrow Cave for the Flamedrake Talisman +2.
- 07Defeat the Minor Erdtree Putrid Avatar for the two Crystal Tears.
- 08Visit Bestial Sanctum and begin the Deathroot sequence.
- 09Complete the Great Jar challenge if your build can handle unpredictable PvP-style enemies.
- 10Leave Elder Dragon Greyoll and the Divine Tower for later if the ordinary enemies are still overwhelming.
Route C: full combat clear
For a full clear, fight in this order:
This is not the easiest order. The Black Blade Kindred and Godskin Apostle are substantially more demanding than the small cave boss, so a completionist run should expect to leave and return.
---
Route C: full combat clear: steps
- 01lesser dragons on the western and central roads;
- 02Dragonbarrow Cave;
- 03Minor Erdtree Putrid Avatar;
- 04Night’s Cavalry at night;
- 05Farum Greatbridge dragon;
- 06Elder Dragon Greyoll and the surrounding dragons;
- 07Black Blade Kindred;
- 08Divine Tower interior and Godskin Apostle;
- 09Great Jar Champions.
Enemy scaling
Dragonbarrow’s most dangerous feature is not a single status effect but the damage dealt by ordinary enemies. Giant dogs, giant crows and vulgar militia can kill a lightly armoured character quickly, especially when several enemies attack together.
Fight from horseback in open ground, but dismount near cliffs, narrow ruins and caves. Torrent is excellent for scouting and disengaging, yet a mounted character can still be staggered by large beasts.
Scarlet Rot
Dragonbarrow itself is drier than the Swamp of Aeonia, but Scarlet Rot remains relevant through neighbouring Caelid routes and certain enemy attacks. Carry Preserving Boluses when travelling through southern Caelid, particularly if your route includes the Church of the Plague, Gowry’s Shack or the swamp.
The Wandering Merchant near the Caelid highway sells a limited number of Preserving Boluses, while materials for crafting more can be found across the region.
Night encounters
Several useful encounters only appear at night. Rest at a Site of Grace and choose nightfall before checking:
The Bell Bearing Hunter encounter is associated with the Isolated Merchant’s Shack and requires the correct time and reload conditions. If the merchant is present, rest again until night and return after reloading the area.
Dangerous shortcuts
Do not assume that a visible road is safe. The route around Greyoll and Fort Faroth is deliberately exposed, and the Farum Greatbridge area can turn into a chase involving a dragon, militia and giant beasts.
Use Sites of Grace frequently. Dragonbarrow’s long sightlines make it easy to lose a large rune stock by trying to ride past one more group.
---
Dragonbarrow brings together several themes that appear elsewhere in Elden Ring:
Dangerous shortcuts
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Dragons and Dragon Communion | the lesser dragons and Greyoll reflect the older draconic order, while the nearby Cathedral of Dragon Communion belongs to broader Caelid rather than Dragonbarrow proper. |
| Bestial devotion | Gurranq’s presence links the region to Deathroot, Those Who Live in Death and the bestial incantation tradition. |
| Radahn’s aftermath | the Divine Tower is tied to Radahn’s Great Rune, while Redmane Castle and the Radahn Festival remain in southern Caelid. |
| Farum Azula | Bestial Sanctum and the Beastman of Farum Azula evoke the ancient beast civilisation without making Dragonbarrow part of the later legacy dungeon. |
| Caelid’s divided landscape | southern Caelid is defined by rot, Sellia and the war around Redmane Castle; Dragonbarrow is defined by altitude, dragons, ancient beasts and isolated fortifications. |
Progression-state changes
The Caelid and Dragonbarrow NPC directory records the main progression conditions for Gurranq, Millicent, Gowry, Jerren, Blaidd, Thorelina and the Isolated Merchant.

Connected Caelid content
---
Is Greyoll’s Dragonbarrow part of Caelid?
Yes. It is a subregion of Caelid, occupying its northern highlands. It should not be used as a synonym for the whole of Caelid.
Can I reach Dragonbarrow at the beginning of the game?
Yes. The Third Church of Marika waygate provides an early route to Bestial Sanctum. Reaching it does not mean the rest of the region is intended for a low-level character.
Is Sellia part of Dragonbarrow?
No. Sellia and Sellia Hideaway are connected Caelid locations. They are often included in broad Caelid guides alongside Dragonbarrow, but they belong to the southern or central Caelid progression rather than the Dragonbarrow plateau.
Do I need to kill Elder Dragon Greyoll?
No. Greyoll is optional. Defeating her provides runes and Dragon Hearts, but neither the main story nor Bestial Sanctum requires her death.
Can I enter Bestial Sanctum without fighting the Black Blade Kindred?
Yes. Ride or run past the boss, activate the Site of Grace and speak to Gurranq.
What is the most important early item in Dragonbarrow?
For general progression, the right half of the Dectus Medallion from Fort Faroth is the most strategically important. For character power, Radagon’s Soreseal, the Memory Stone from Lenne’s Rise and the Minor Erdtree Crystal Tears are also major pickups.
Why is Dragonbarrow so difficult when it is reached through Limgrave?
The waygate is a shortcut, not a recommended progression marker. Dragonbarrow’s enemies and bosses are tuned far above the early Limgrave route, and the area is designed to remain dangerous even after much of southern Caelid has been explored.
