Miquella's Haligtree

Miquella's Haligtree is an optional endgame legacy dungeon in Elden Ring, reached through the Consecrated Snowfield.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • The Haligtree and Elphael are one connected end-game dungeon complex, but they are distinct subareas. The upper tree contains the Canopy and Haligtree Town. The lower fortress is Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree.
  • Access requires the Haligtree Secret Medallion Its two halves are obtained in Liurnia and the Mountaintops of the Giants. The medallion is used at the Grand Lift of Rold to reach the Consecrated Snowfield, after which Ordina, Liturgical Town provides the route into the Haligtree.
  • Millicent’s quest changes the area If her quest has been advanced correctly, she can appear as a summon before the battle with the Ulcerated Tree Spirit. After that fight, the player chooses between helping Millicent or invading her.
  • Malenia is not required for the main story She is an optional remembrance boss, but defeating her is important for her remembrance, the Great Rune of Malenia and the final rewards associated with Millicent’s quest.
  • The most dangerous hazards are environmental as much as combat-based Narrow branches, knockback, giant Oracle Envoys, ants, Scarlet Rot and the Ulcerated Tree Spirit make careless exploration particularly costly.
  • The dungeon is designed as a descent The safest approach is usually to activate each Site of Grace, clear one branch or platform at a time, then return for collectible sweeps rather than trying to collect everything during the first run.

About this guide

Base-game guide. Major spoilers for the late game, Millicent’s quest and Malenia’s boss fight.

Overview

Miquella’s Haligtree is an optional end-game legacy dungeon in Elden Ring. It is not simply the enormous tree visible from the Consecrated Snowfield. The playable location is a connected complex that begins among the Haligtree’s upper branches, descends through Haligtree Town and its plaza, and continues into Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree, the fortified lower settlement built around the tree’s trunk and roots.

The area culminates in two of the base game’s major optional encounters: Loretta, Knight of the Haligtree, and Malenia, Blade of Miquella. It also contains the final major stage of Millicent’s quest, several of the game’s rarest upgrade materials, powerful talismans, high-value weapons and a large collection of items associated with Miquella, Malenia and the Haligtree’s inhabitants.

Directory: connected but excluded places

---

The Haligtree is an enormous living tree that rises from the far north-western edge of the Lands Between. Its upper sections are organic and exposed, with the player travelling along bark, branches, fungal growths and improvised platforms. Lower down, the tree becomes a built environment. Houses, bridges, towers and defensive walls have been fitted into and around the trunk.

The change from tree to city is deliberate. Haligtree Town is a settlement built among the branches and upper trunk, while Elphael is a more formal fortified complex. Elphael’s stone architecture, battlements and military population reflect its role as the final refuge of Malenia and the Haligtree’s defenders.

The route is almost entirely vertical. The player begins high above the ground, descends through the town and reaches the outer and inner defences of Elphael. The deepest section is the root area, where Malenia waits in an isolated chamber beneath the fortress.

Main environmental themes

The area is not procedurally generated. Enemy positions, item placements, shortcuts and boss encounters are fixed, although some enemies can drop equipment randomly.

Requirements

You need the Haligtree Secret Medallion, consisting of two halves.

The Hidden Path contains a false floor and an optional side route, but it is not itself part of the Haligtree dungeon. Ordina is also a separate puzzle area, not the first subarea of the tree.

Suggested preparation

The area is late-game in difficulty. A fully upgraded main weapon and a well-developed build are strongly recommended, although there is no hard level requirement.

---

4.1 Haligtree Canopy

The Canopy is the uppermost playable part of the dungeon. The player arrives on a broad branch overlooking the tree’s interior and must move across smaller branches and mushroom platforms.

The first major lesson is that the route is not always the widest visible branch. Several paths curve around the trunk or descend through apparently dangerous drops. The wide upper branches contain Oracle Envoys, while the lower and side branches hide corpses, upgrade materials and consumables.

Practical route

Do not fight giant Envoys directly on a narrow branch unless necessary. Their attacks can stagger or launch the player into the void. A bow, crossbow, spell or a fast weapon that can reach their head is safer.

Notable Canopy contents

Some equipment, particularly the Envoy weapons, is obtained as enemy drops rather than guaranteed corpse loot. The giant Envoy’s horn is especially well known for its low-probability drop and may require repeated farming. A full item route lists the Canopy’s branches separately because several collectibles are easy to miss while following the central path.

Practical route

  1. 01
Activate the Haligtree Canopy Site of Grace.
  2. 02
Follow the main branch towards the large Oracle Envoys.
  3. 03
Use ranged attacks or quick strikes to interrupt their bubble attacks.
  4. 04
Check the side branches and mushroom platforms before dropping down.
  5. 05
    Descend towards the town structures.
  6. 06
Activate the Haligtree Town Site of Grace as soon as possible.

4.2 Haligtree Town

Haligtree Town is a compact settlement built into the tree. Its buildings are mostly abandoned or occupied by hostile defenders. The route is less exposed than the Canopy, but enemies are positioned around corners, rooftops and narrow bridges.

Activate the Haligtree Town Site of Grace, then explore the buildings before moving towards the large central plaza. There are several dead ends containing crafting materials and consumables, while the main route leads towards a fog wall.

A Crystalian encounter is found in the town route, with a Summoning Snail involved in the encounter. The snail is vulnerable once located, and killing it is generally more efficient than repeatedly fighting the summoned Crystalian.

Haligtree Town Plaza

The plaza is the first open courtyard in the dungeon and contains the boss gate for Loretta, Knight of the Haligtree. Before entering the arena, search the plaza edges and buildings. The area includes one of the dungeon’s Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones, as well as other high-value items.

Directory: Haligtree Town and Plaza

4.3 Boss: Loretta, Knight of the Haligtree

Loretta is a mounted spectral knight who uses a greatbow, sweeping halberd attacks and magical projectiles. This is a separate encounter from Royal Knight Loretta in Caria Manor. The Haligtree version is stronger and uses the title Loretta, Knight of the Haligtree.

The arena gives enough space to use Torrent, although the fight can also be completed on foot. Closing distance quickly reduces the danger from Loretta’s bow. Her magical greatbow attack can be avoided by rolling sideways at the correct moment rather than retreating directly.

Rewards

Loretta’s Mastery is a sorcery, while Loretta’s War Sickle is a halberd. Both are fixed boss rewards, not random drops.

---

Elphael is the lower and more heavily fortified half of the complex. It is often called the “Brace of the Haligtree”, which distinguishes it from the upper tree and Haligtree Town.

The first major checkpoint is the Prayer Room Site of Grace. From here, the player travels along long defensive walkways filled with Cleanrot Knights, soldiers and various Haligtree defenders. The route branches repeatedly, so it is useful to clear the battlements in sections and return to the Grace before attempting the lower areas.

5.1 Prayer Room

The Prayer Room is the most important checkpoint in Elphael. It provides access to:

If Millicent’s quest has reached the required stage, she can be found in or near the Prayer Room. Speak to her until her dialogue is exhausted. Her position and available dialogue depend on progression elsewhere in the game.

The surrounding walkways are guarded by Cleanrot Knights. These enemies are dangerous because they combine delayed spear attacks, sweeping scythe strikes and Scarlet Rot-inducing abilities. Pulling one enemy at a time is safer than charging into the open courtyards.

5.2 Millicent’s quest and the Ulcerated Tree Spirit

The most important optional encounter in Elphael is the Ulcerated Tree Spirit in a large Scarlet Rot basin below the battlements. This enemy is not a conventional fog-wall boss. It is an open-area boss encounter in the drainage area.

Before reaching it, look for a route down from the battlements. The fall is survivable if approached correctly, but a careless drop can kill the player or leave them surrounded in Rot.

If Millicent’s quest is active, signs appear after the Tree Spirit is defeated. The player can either:

These choices produce different rewards and permanently determine the quest’s final talisman reward.

The assist route is also required for the later acquisition of the Unalloyed Gold Needle, which can eventually become Miquella’s Needle after the relevant boss and quest steps. Millicent’s quest is therefore one of the area’s most significant progression-sensitive activities.

5.3 Elphael Inner Wall

The Elphael Inner Wall Site of Grace is the next major checkpoint. The route from the Prayer Room can be confusing because several passages appear to lead towards the same destination. Look for ladders, roof routes and openings in the walls rather than following only the ground-level corridors.

The Inner Wall connects the upper fortress to the lower root system. It is defended by more Cleanrot Knights and includes routes to:

Millicent may appear here during her quest progression, depending on the player’s previous actions. Her quest dialogue should be completed before committing to the final invasion or assistance choice.

Directory: Elphael

Some directory entries above are enemies or items rather than formal map labels. They are included because they are fixed, named content associated with the Elphael section.

---

Malenia waits at the deepest point of the complex, beyond the Haligtree Roots Site of Grace. Her arena is a large, circular chamber containing a shallow pool. The fight has two phases.

Directory: Elphael

Phase one

Every successful hit restores some of her health, even when the player blocks. This makes passive shield use risky and rewards spacing, parrying or carefully timed aggression.

Waterfowl Dance

Waterfowl Dance is the attack most associated with the fight. At close range, simply rolling backwards is often insufficient. Survival depends on recognising the animation early and creating distance, using a well-timed sequence of rolls, or exploiting build-specific defensive tools.

The attack can be avoided more consistently by:

Waterfowl Dance: steps

  1. 01
Staying at a manageable distance rather than constantly attacking at point-blank range.
  2. 02
Reacting immediately when Malenia rises into the air.
  3. 03
Running away from the first flurry where possible.
  4. 04
Rolling through later flurries rather than attempting to block everything.
  5. 05
Practising the timing rather than relying on a single universal method.

Phase two

At the start of phase two, Malenia transforms into the Goddess of Rot. The opening Scarlet Aeonia can be punished after the explosion finishes, but do not rush into the flower itself.

A Spirit Ash can help divide her attention, but careless summons may give her opportunities to heal through repeated hits. Mimic Tear, Black Knife Tiche and other strong summons can be effective, though success varies by build and patch version.

Rewards

The Malenia, Blade of Miquella encounter is optional and does not block the normal endings. Her Great Rune is also optional and is activated at the Isolated Divine Tower, not inside the Haligtree.

Directory: Malenia’s arena

---

The Haligtree is not populated like a normal city. It is a refuge and military stronghold whose inhabitants are mostly groups associated with Miquella or with the outcast communities drawn to his ideal.

Directory: Malenia’s arena

Named characters

Malenia, Blade of Miquella

Malenia is the Haligtree’s principal guardian and its final boss. She is Miquella’s twin and one of the demigods born from Marika and Radagon. Her presence explains the military strength of Elphael and the importance of the fortress.

Millicent

Millicent’s quest reaches its final major decision in Elphael. Her story concerns her connection to the Scarlet Rot, Gowry’s manipulation and her attempt to recover her identity and purpose. Her final location, summon signs and rewards are progression-dependent.

Miquella

Miquella is not encountered as an active NPC in the base-game Haligtree. His influence is everywhere, but the player does not meet him here in person.

Factions and groups

The Haligtree’s outcast population is an important part of its identity. Albinaurics, Misbegotten and other marginalised groups are associated with Miquella’s refuge, although not every hostile creature encountered in the dungeon should be treated as a loyal resident.

Major bosses

Enemy equipment such as Envoy weapons and Cleanrot equipment may require repeated farming. These are random enemy drops and should not be confused with guaranteed corpse loot or boss rewards.

Branch falls

Many enemies are more dangerous because they can stagger the player near an edge. Do not lock onto giant Envoys or ants while standing on the narrowest branches. If an enemy is not guarding a necessary route, it is often safer to sprint past it and return after opening a shortcut.

Oracle Envoy bubbles

The large bubble projectiles travel surprisingly far and can knock the player from branches. Use the trunk, walls and branch bends as cover. Fighting from below is often safer than confronting a giant Envoy on the same narrow platform.

Scarlet Rot

The Elphael drainage areas contain some of the dungeon’s worst Rot exposure. Preserving Boluses are the simplest answer, but flame-cleanse incantations and high robustness can also help. Avoid wasting Rot cures before entering the basin, as the Ulcerated Tree Spirit can prolong the fight.

Revenants

Revenants are fast, aggressive and difficult to fight conventionally. Healing-area incantations can damage them heavily, but otherwise use narrow doorways, pillars and elevation to restrict their movement.

Millicent’s missable rewards

The Rotten Winged Sword Insignia and Millicent’s Prosthesis are mutually exclusive in a single playthrough unless the player uses later save manipulation or a trade. Decide which reward suits the build before selecting the summon or invasion sign.

Millicent’s quest also requires earlier actions outside the Haligtree, including interactions with Gowry and progress through Caelid. Reaching Elphael alone does not guarantee that every quest event will be available.

---

Miquella created the Haligtree as an alternative to the Erdtree and as a refuge for those rejected by the Golden Order. The tree’s inhabitants and architecture express that purpose, although the project never reached the idealised state implied by Miquella’s plans.

Malenia’s presence is central to the location’s history. She was associated with the Haligtree while Miquella sought a way to cure her Scarlet Rot and create a place outside the authority of the Golden Order. The Haligtree ultimately became both a sanctuary and a military position.

The tree is visibly damaged and incomplete. Its lower regions are overrun by Rot, its defenders are hostile and Miquella is absent. By the time the player arrives, the Haligtree is less a flourishing new order than a failing refuge held together by soldiers, loyalists and desperate survivors.

Elphael’s fortified character suggests that the area served as Malenia’s stronghold as much as Miquella’s sanctuary. The contrast between the open, organic upper town and the defensive lower fortress mirrors the wider tension between Miquella’s ideal of inclusion and the brutal reality of the Shattering.

Progression state

The Haligtree does not substantially change because of the game’s main ending choice. Its important changes are tied to:

The area remains accessible after the main story and can be completed before or after defeating the Elden Beast.

Is Elphael part of Miquella’s Haligtree?

Yes, in the broad gameplay sense. It is a distinct subarea named Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree, connected directly to Haligtree Town and containing the route to Malenia. Guides often use “Miquella’s Haligtree” to describe both sections together.

Do I have to defeat Malenia?

No. Malenia is an optional boss. You can complete the main story without entering the Haligtree.

Can I reach the Haligtree without the Secret Medallion?

Not through the intended route. You need both halves to operate the Grand Lift of Rold’s secret route and reach the Consecrated Snowfield and Ordina.

Which Millicent reward is better?

For builds that make repeated attacks, both are excellent. The Rotten Winged Sword Insignia gives a strong successive-hit bonus, while Millicent’s Prosthesis also raises Dexterity. The Prosthesis is especially attractive for Dexterity characters, but the choice depends on your build and whether you need the additional talisman slot effect.

Where is the Haligtree map?

The Haligtree does not use a normal overworld map fragment in the same way as Limgrave or Liurnia. Navigation is handled through the dungeon itself and the regional map around the Consecrated Snowfield.

Is Miquella present?

Not as a living NPC in the base game Haligtree. The location is built around his legacy, plans and followers, but he is not encountered directly there.
