Ordina, Liturgical Town

Ordina, Liturgical Town is a quiet settlement in the Consecrated Snowfield, best known as the gateway to Miquella's Haligtree.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • Ordina is a small, abandoned settlement in the northern Consecrated Snowfield, not a general name for the whole approach to Miquella’s Haligtree.
  • Its principal challenge is an Evergaol version of the town You must light four flame-bearing statues there to remove the seal blocking the Haligtree waygate.
  • The Evergaol contains Albinauric Wolfback Archers and invisible Black Knife Assassins. The Sentry’s Torch can reveal the assassins, but it is optional rather than a requirement for solving the puzzle.
  • The normal town is largely a deserted shell Its most important permanent reward is the Black Knife Set, found under the stone staircase near the sealed waygate.
  • Ordina is reached through the Consecrated Snowfield, which requires both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion and the hidden route at the Grand Lift of Rold.
  • Lighting a statue is persistent If you die after lighting one, that flame remains lit, so the puzzle does not need to be completed in one attempt.

Note

Base game guide. This article covers Ordina itself, its Site of Grace, the town’s Evergaol puzzle, the nearby Haligtree seal and the loot found within the settlement. It does not treat the wider Consecrated Snowfield, the Hidden Path to the Haligtree, Miquella’s Haligtree, Haligtree Town or Elphael as parts of Ordina. Those are neighbouring or connected areas with their own boundaries.

Overview

Ordina stands on the northern edge of the Consecrated Snowfield. It is a settlement of stone buildings, narrow lanes and elevated rooftops, built against the snowy cliffs before the route to Miquella’s Haligtree. The town is deserted in its ordinary state, although spectral forms of the area’s former inhabitants and defenders can be seen moving through it. These apparitions cannot be fought or spoken to in the normal version of the town.

The town’s central feature is not a conventional dungeon entrance but an Evergaol. Interacting with the circular seal sends the player into a dark, hostile version of Ordina. In that realm, four statues hold unlit flames. Lighting all four removes the magical barrier at the rear of the ordinary town and activates the waygate to Miquella’s Haligtree.

Ordina is therefore best understood as a gateway settlement and ritual security zone, rather than as a large explorable city. Its content is concentrated in three linked spaces:

The Haligtree itself begins after the waygate and should not be counted as part of Ordina. Likewise, the Hidden Path to the Haligtree is a separate dungeon reached much earlier through the Grand Lift of Rold.

Ordina, Liturgical Town

This is the ordinary settlement reached from the Consecrated Snowfield. It contains the Site of Grace, the sealed staircase, the Black Knife Set and various fixed pickups. There are no functioning shops, houses with usable interiors or resident quest NPCs in the town.

The normal version is safe from active combat. You can explore it before solving the puzzle, although the waygate remains sealed until the Evergaol challenge is complete.

Ordina Evergaol

The Evergaol is a separate progression state of the same settlement. It uses the town’s streets, roofs and buildings but changes the atmosphere, enemy placement and objective. The four flames are found only in this version.

The Evergaol is not a conventional boss Evergaol. Unlike Evergaols that imprison a named duel opponent, Ordina’s Evergaol functions as a puzzle arena. The wider Evergaol system normally prevents ordinary co-operative summoning, and Ordina follows that general structure.

Northern sealed staircase and Haligtree waygate

At the rear of the town, a broad staircase rises towards the sealed entrance. Before the puzzle is solved, the barrier prevents progress. After all four flames are lit, the barrier disappears and the teleporter becomes usable.

The waygate transports the player to Miquella’s Haligtree. The destination is not another street of Ordina, and the Haligtree’s canopy, Haligtree Town, Elphael and Malenia’s arena are separate areas.

The last two descriptions are functional landmarks rather than formal map names. They are included to distinguish the town’s principal structures.

Reaching the Consecrated Snowfield

Ordina is a late-game location. Access requires the Haligtree Secret Medallion, assembled from two halves:

Using the completed medallion at the Grand Lift of Rold selects the hidden route to the Consecrated Snowfield rather than the ordinary Mountaintops of the Giants route. The Snowfield is covered by a severe blizzard in its southern section, with visibility improving as the player travels north.

The route to Ordina is broadly

  1. 01
Obtain both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion.
  2. 02
Use the completed medallion at the Grand Lift of Rold.
  3. 03
    Cross the Consecrated Snowfield.
  4. 04
    Travel north towards the town.
  5. 05
Activate the Ordina, Liturgical Town Site of Grace.
  6. 06
Enter the Evergaol and light the four flames.
  7. 07
Use the newly opened waygate to Miquella’s Haligtree.

Nearby places that are not part of Ordina

These locations connect to Ordina’s progression but should not be merged into the town’s directory:

The Hidden Path to the Haligtree is particularly easy to conflate with Ordina. It is the concealed lift route that leads into the Snowfield, while Ordina is the later settlement at the Snowfield’s northern end.

---

Ordina is arranged around a compact set of streets, courtyards, stairways and rooftops. The settlement is not large, but its vertical layout matters greatly during the Evergaol puzzle.

The Site of Grace lies on the southern outskirts. From there, the main route runs north through the town towards the raised staircase and waygate. Several buildings are climbable in the Evergaol state, and the puzzle deliberately requires the player to move between street level and rooftops.

The rear of the town is dominated by the large stone staircase. The Black Knife Set is positioned beneath the arches underneath or behind this staircase, close to the sealed route. This armour is available in the ordinary town and does not require the Evergaol puzzle.

The Evergaol’s four flame statues are distributed through the town rather than placed in a single chamber:

This arrangement makes the challenge a navigation puzzle as much as a combat encounter. The player must identify safe approaches, avoid rooftop archers and decide whether to kill or bypass the invisible assassins.

Ordinary residents

Ordina has no active civilian population. The normal version shows spectral figures associated with the settlement, including Albinauric archers, wolves and Black Knife Assassins. These figures are environmental manifestations rather than ordinary NPCs. They cannot be interacted with in the normal town.

Resident directory

These are not separate named characters.

Quest NPCs

No named quest NPC is established within Ordina itself. The area is connected to several late-game story threads, especially Miquella, the Haligtree and the Albinaurics, but those characters are encountered elsewhere.

Do not count Latenna as a resident of Ordina. Her quest leads through the Consecrated Snowfield and towards the Haligtree, but she is not an NPC stationed in the town.

Factions

Albinaurics

Albinauric archers and wolfback archers appear in the Evergaol version of the settlement. The town’s connection with the Albinaurics is primarily environmental and thematic. It forms part of the route towards Miquella’s Haligtree, a refuge and alternative power centre associated with those rejected or marginalised by the Golden Order.

Black Knife Assassins

The Evergaol contains invisible Black Knife Assassins, while the ordinary town shows their spectral counterparts. The assassins’ presence makes the settlement feel less like an abandoned village and more like a guarded threshold.

The Black Knife Assassins are associated with the Night of Black Knives and use concealment to approach their victims. In Ordina, their invisibility is turned into a direct navigation hazard.

Miquella’s followers

The town is connected to Miquella’s Haligtree, but no active followers or named Haligtree characters remain in Ordina to speak with. The town’s significance is expressed through its ritual gateway and the defensive puzzle rather than through dialogue.

---

Site of Grace

Ordina, Liturgical Town

The Site of Grace is on the southern outskirts of the settlement. Activate it before attempting the Evergaol puzzle. It provides the usual rest, flask replenishment, fast travel and preparation point.

There is no Smithing Table, merchant, spirit tuner, map monument or other specialised facility inside Ordina.

Shops and businesses

No functioning shops or businesses are confirmed within the town. Buildings that resemble houses or civic structures are scenery and should not be treated as purchasable properties or service locations.

Service directory

The Sentry’s Torch is not sold in Ordina. It is associated with the Hermit Merchant in the Capital Outskirts, outside this location.

---

Albinauric Wolfback Archers

The Evergaol version contains Albinauric archers positioned on rooftops and other elevated locations. Their attacks travel over long distances and can interrupt attempts to climb ladders or approach the flame statues. Some ride direwolves, while others occupy fixed firing positions.

Their most dangerous feature is not their durability but their vantage point. They can attack while the player is navigating narrow roofs or climbing, where dodging is limited.

Practical counters

They can also drop Albinauric-related equipment, but such drops are random rather than guaranteed fixed rewards. The town’s fixed armour reward is the Black Knife Set, not an automatic Albinauric armour drop.

Black Knife Assassins

Invisible Black Knife Assassins patrol the Evergaol at ground level. They are especially dangerous because the player may hear or notice an attack before seeing the enemy. One successful ambush can stagger the player long enough for a second hit to land.

The Sentry’s Torch reveals invisible enemies when equipped. It is the most direct counter to the assassins in Ordina, although the puzzle can be completed by avoiding them. The torch does not make the town harmless, since the rooftop archers remain visible and dangerous.

Practical counters

A Black Knife Assassin in this area can drop Ghost Glovewort [9]. This is an enemy drop, not a guaranteed reward from completing the puzzle.

Bosses

Ordina has no named boss and no conventional boss arena. The Black Knife Assassins are elite enemies, but they do not trigger a boss health bar or fog-door encounter here.

Enemy directory

The spectral entries are environmental appearances in the normal version and are not ordinary combat encounters.

Fixed notable loot

Black Knife Set

The complete Black Knife Set is found on a corpse beneath the stone arches at the rear of the town, under or behind the large staircase leading towards the Haligtree waygate. It includes:

The set is obtainable before solving the Evergaol puzzle. It is therefore worth collecting on the first visit, especially for players using stealth-oriented builds. The armour’s design and location reinforce the town’s association with concealed assassins, although the presence of the set does not prove that the town is their birthplace.

Other recorded loot

The town’s item directories also record several smaller pickups and crafting materials. These are ordinary ground items rather than major quest rewards.

Loot directory

The available directories differ in how they classify some drops and minor pickups. In particular, Ghost Glovewort [9] is associated with the Black Knife Assassin encounter rather than being a normal corpse pickup. The Black Knife Set is the principal fixed collectible, while the other entries are minor scattered items or enemy-related rewards.

Random and procedural content

Ordina does not have a procedural layout. The town, flame statues, rooftops and enemy positions are fixed. Randomness is limited to ordinary enemy drops and the player’s own combat outcomes.

Starting the puzzle

The Evergaol entrance is on the northern side of the town, near a written instruction and the circular seal on the ground. Interact with it and choose to enter.

Entering changes the town into a dark alternate state. The objective is to light four flame statues. You are returned to the ordinary town after the final flame is lit.

Flame locations

The exact approach can vary depending on which route you take, but the four objectives are arranged as follows.

Flame one: ground-level statue

From the Evergaol starting point, move down towards the lower streets and take the route around the nearby buildings. The first statue is at ground level and is the least demanding of the four in terms of vertical navigation.

Take care not to linger in the open. A nearby Black Knife Assassin may attack from the ground, while archers can cover the surrounding streets.

Flame two: first rooftop route

Return towards the approach to the Site of Grace, but use the side route around the buildings rather than simply descending the main steps. Follow the path until you find a ladder, climb it and continue upwards using the next ladder. The second flame is on a high rooftop or tower section.

This route exposes you to rooftop archers. If you are not using the Sentry’s Torch, you can often reach the statue without engaging every ground-level assassin.

Flame three: eastern rooftops

From the second flame, drop towards the connected rooftops on the eastern side. Cross the roofline and climb the next sequence of ladders to reach the third statue.

This is usually the most exposed section. The player may have to cross roof surfaces while under fire, so sprinting, rolling through arrow impacts and killing the closest archer first are all reasonable options.

Flame four: western tower route

Return towards the Evergaol’s starting courtyard and drop back to snowy ground level. Move around the building and use the ladders on the opposite side to climb towards the fourth statue.

Once the last flame is lit, the Evergaol ends and the player returns to the normal town. The flames remain lit after death, so a failed attempt does not reset the whole puzzle.

Recommended puzzle order

This order follows a relatively natural circuit and reduces unnecessary backtracking. However, the puzzle does not require a particular order.

---

A practical order is

  1. 01
    Light the ground-level statue.
  2. 02
Take the side route to the first rooftop statue.
  3. 03
Cross the connected roofs to the second rooftop statue.
  4. 04
    Return towards the central courtyard.
  5. 05
Climb the western ladders to the final rooftop statue.
  6. 06
    Leave the Evergaol automatically.
  7. 07
Collect the Black Knife Set if you have not already done so.
  8. 08
    Use the Haligtree waygate.

Safe preparation route

The Black Knife Set is particularly easy to miss because players often rush directly to the Evergaol marker. It is not inside the puzzle dimension and does not appear as a reward for lighting the flames.

Before entering the Evergaol

  1. 01
    Activate the Site of Grace.
  2. 02
Explore the ordinary town while it is safe.
  3. 03
Collect the Black Knife Set under the northern staircase.
  4. 04
Check your equipment load and healing supply.
  5. 05
Equip a ranged weapon or spell if available.
  6. 06
Bring the Sentry’s Torch if you want to reveal the assassins.
  7. 07
Enter the Evergaol only when ready.

Stealth route

This approach treats the Evergaol as an infiltration sequence rather than a clear-the-area challenge.

Quick checklist

---

Invisible assassins

The Black Knife Assassins are the defining hidden threat. The normal town foreshadows them with spectral figures, but the active enemies appear in the Evergaol. The Sentry’s Torch makes them visible and can dramatically reduce the difficulty of learning the route.

Rooftop archers

The Albinauric archers punish careless movement. Their elevated positions make them difficult to reach directly and allow them to fire while the player is climbing.

A common mistake is to focus entirely on the invisible assassins and forget that the archers can kill the player during a ladder animation or while crossing a roof.

Persistent flame progress

The puzzle’s most forgiving feature is that lit flames stay lit after death. You can therefore divide the challenge into several attempts:

Persistent flame progress

Persistent flame progress
NameDetails
First attemptlearn the route and light one or two flames.
Second attemptcomplete the remaining objectives.
Final visitcollect any missed ordinary-town loot and use the waygate.

Black Knife Set location

The armour beneath the staircase is not inside the Evergaol. If you search the puzzle dimension for it, you will not find it. Return to the ordinary town and inspect the arches beneath the large staircase near the Haligtree seal.

---

Ordina’s name identifies it as a liturgical town, suggesting a settlement connected with ritual or religious practice. The game does not provide a direct explanatory dialogue scene that spells out the town’s full history, so interpretations should remain cautious.

What the game does establish is more concrete:

Together, these details present Ordina as a guarded threshold. It may have served as a settlement or ceremonial approach for those travelling towards the Haligtree, but the exact relationship between the town’s original inhabitants, the Albinaurics and the assassins is not explicitly confirmed by the game’s text.

The spectral inhabitants in the normal state are also significant. They show that the town’s abandonment is not merely visual emptiness. The player is seeing a remnant of the settlement’s activity while the Evergaol version presents its dangers in physical form.

Black Knife connection

The Black Knife Set and the assassins’ presence are deliberately placed together, but this should not be overstated into an unsupported claim that all Black Knife Assassins originated in Ordina. The game establishes the assassins’ presence here and provides the armour here. It does not, by itself, establish Ordina as their homeland.

Relationship to Miquella’s Haligtree

Ordina is the last settlement before the Haligtree route. The blocked staircase and ritual puzzle make the town function as a protective filter. The player must possess the means to reach the Consecrated Snowfield, survive the town’s hidden defenders and complete its flame ritual before reaching the Haligtree.

The Haligtree’s upper and lower areas are separate destinations. Ordina should not be used as a broad label for the entire Haligtree approach.

---

There is no normal boss-clear state, merchant unlock or resident phase change. Ordina’s principal progression switch is simply whether the four flames have been lit.

---

Ordina’s main content is not permanently missable in a normal playthrough. The town, its puzzle and the Black Knife Set remain available when you return.

The route to Ordina itself is progression-gated by the Haligtree Secret Medallion, but the town is an optional late-game destination rather than a mandatory step for completing the main ending route.

Is Ordina, Liturgical Town a dungeon?

It is a small overworld settlement with a dungeon-like puzzle state. The Evergaol provides the main challenge, but Ordina does not have a conventional dungeon boss or full legacy-dungeon structure.

Do I have to kill the Black Knife Assassins?

No. You can avoid them and complete the four-flame puzzle. The Sentry’s Torch reveals them, making combat easier, but it is not required.

Does the Sentry’s Torch work inside Ordina?

Yes. It can reveal the invisible Black Knife Assassins in the Evergaol. It is bought elsewhere, not from a merchant in Ordina.

Do the flames reset if I die?

No. Flames that have already been lit remain lit after death.

Where is the Black Knife Set?

In the ordinary version of the town, beneath the arches under the large staircase near the sealed Haligtree route. It is not obtained from the Evergaol puzzle.

Is there a boss in Ordina?

No named boss appears in Ordina. The hostile enemies are Albinauric archers and Black Knife Assassins.

Does Ordina contain Miquella’s Haligtree?

No. Ordina contains the waygate to the Haligtree. The Haligtree is a separate area reached after using it.

Is Ordina required to finish Elden Ring?

No. It is optional for the main ending route, but it is required to reach Miquella’s Haligtree and its associated late-game content.
