About this guide
Scope: Base-game Elden Ring, including the plateau and its named locations. The nearby Village of the Albinaurics, Ainsel River, Lake of Rot, Moonlight Greatsword quest locations outside the plateau, and other Liurnia landmarks are treated as neighbouring connections rather than parts of Moonlight Altar itself.
Overview
Moonlight Altar is a secluded high plateau in south-western Liurnia of the Lakes. It is not simply the area around the Cathedral of Manus Celes. The plateau includes the cathedral, the Moonfolk Ruins, Lunar Estate Ruins, Chelona’s Rise, Ringleader’s Evergaol and the surrounding cliffs, roads and wildlife. It is a late-game sub-region reached through the final stages of Ranni the Witch’s questline, rather than by ordinary travel across Liurnia.
The area is small compared with most open-world regions, but it is unusually important. It contains the final stages of Ranni’s story, two powerful optional bosses, a high-level spirit summon, the Ranni’s Dark Moon sorcery and a major ending-related reward. Its geography also makes it feel like a hidden extension of Liurnia: a moonlit shelf above the Albinauric village, with ruined settlements and towers scattered across the cliffs.
Geography and boundaries
Moonlight Altar occupies a raised shelf on the south-western side of Liurnia. Its eastern and southern edges look down over the lake and the Village of the Albinaurics, while cliffs and the surrounding mountain walls prevent ordinary approaches. The plateau is bathed in a colder, more celestial light than the lower parts of Liurnia, reinforcing its association with the moon, the Carian royal line and Ranni’s hidden destiny.
The boundary should be understood as the whole elevated plateau reached by the lift after Astel, not merely the area immediately outside the cathedral. The named locations on the plateau are:
The Deep Ainsel Well is the lower-world entrance that connects to the surrounding Liurnian landscape, but it is not itself part of Moonlight Altar. It is a route into the region rather than a Moonlight Altar subarea.
Consolidated named directory: places within Moonlight Altar
The map and area listings distinguish Moonlight Altar from the wider Liurnia region while placing the Moonfolk Ruins, Lunar Estate Ruins and Ringleader’s Evergaol within its plateau.

Access and route
Moonlight Altar is a progression-gated area. There is no normal cliff route, ladder or hidden path from the surface of Liurnia.
Requirements
The Dark Moon Ring is obtained from the treasure chest in the Raya Lucaria Grand Library after defeating Rennala. The ring is a quest item and is required to pass the sealed lift.
Practical route from the entrance
The first grace is placed close to the lift exit, making it safe to begin exploration without repeating the Lake of Rot and Astel every time.
---
Requirements: To reach the plateau, the player must
- 01Progress through Ranni’s questline.
- 02Defeat Starscourge Radahn, which allows the route through Nokron to open.
- 03Obtain the Fingerslayer Blade and return it to Ranni.
- 04Continue through Ainsel River and the Lake of Rot.
- 05Defeat Astel, Naturalborn of the Void.
- 06Take the lift beyond Astel’s arena.
- 07Use the Dark Moon Ring at the sealed lift mechanism.
Practical route from the entrance
- 01After defeating Astel, search the far side of the arena for the lift.
- 02Use the Dark Moon Ring to unlock it.
- 03Ride upwards to the Moonlight Altar Site of Grace.
- 04From the grace, decide whether to explore the plateau or go directly to the cathedral.
- 05For Ranni’s quest, ride north-east towards the Cathedral of Manus Celes.
- 06For the optional content, explore south-west towards Chelona’s Rise and north-west towards Ringleader’s Evergaol.
Suggested exploration order
This route avoids repeatedly crossing the plateau while Adula is active and leaves the sealed rise as a deliberate final activity.
---
A useful order is
- 01Activate the Moonlight Altar Site of Grace.
- 02Sweep the western and central plateau for ordinary loot and enemies.
- 03Visit Lunar Estate Ruins.
- 04Approach the Cathedral of Manus Celes and activate its grace.
- 05Deal with Glintstone Dragon Adula.
- 06Complete Ranni’s objective inside the cathedral.
- 07Return to the plateau grace and explore Moonfolk Ruins.
- 08Visit Ringleader’s Evergaol.
- 09Finish Chelona’s Rise last, since its wise-beast puzzle can be disrupted by certain world-state interactions and is easiest to manage after the rest of the area is mapped.
Cathedral of Manus Celes
The Cathedral of Manus Celes is the central landmark of Moonlight Altar. It is a large ruined church on the northern part of the plateau and is closely associated with Ranni’s relationship to the Two Fingers. The cathedral has its own Site of Grace and contains the conclusion of the physical journey through Ranni’s questline.
Glintstone Dragon Adula appears outside the cathedral. This is the second major encounter with Adula. The dragon first appears earlier in the game near the Three Sisters, where it retreats once reduced to a portion of its health. The later encounter is the decisive fight.
Inside the cathedral, the player can find a deep opening leading into a small cavern beneath the building. At the bottom are Ranni’s doll and the corpse of her Two Fingers. This scene is one of the clearest visual statements of Ranni’s rebellion against the order represented by the Fingers.
What to do here
The Dark Moon Greatsword is the culmination of Ranni’s quest, not a random cathedral pickup. It is therefore possible to visit the cathedral and collect other items without immediately receiving the weapon.
Cathedral directory
What to do here
- 01Rest at the cathedral grace.
- 02Defeat Glintstone Dragon Adula if you want its spell and Dragon Heart.
- 03Enter the cathedral.
- 04Drop carefully into the underground cavern.
- 05Interact with Ranni’s doll and the Two Fingers.
- 06Complete the relevant dialogue and receive the Dark Moon Greatsword.
Moonfolk Ruins
The Moonfolk Ruins occupy the north-eastern and central parts of the plateau. They are the remains of an old settlement, represented primarily by broken stone structures, open courtyards and scattered hostile creatures. The name connects them thematically with the Moonlight Altar’s older lunar associations, although the game does not provide a complete historical account of the people who lived there.
The ruins are worth exploring after activating the cathedral grace because the surrounding terrain is open and easy to overlook. Search the ruined buildings, corpse clusters and edges of the plateau rather than following only the obvious paths.
Moonfolk Ruins directory
The exact enemy distribution can vary by approach and some creatures are positioned among rather than inside the visible ruins. The Red Wolf encounter is one of the more dangerous surprises in the area, particularly for characters who arrive under-levelled after completing the underground route.

Lunar Estate Ruins
Lunar Estate Ruins lie on the southern and south-eastern side of the plateau. They are less elaborate than the cathedral and are best understood as another remnant of the old lunar settlement rather than a conventional dungeon. The ruins contain hostile creatures and open-world loot, but no merchant, quest hub or normal settlement services have been verified there.
Lunar Estate Ruins directory
The Royal Revenant is particularly dangerous in confined spaces. Holy damage, healing incantations and careful positioning are useful if confronting it directly.
Chelona’s Rise
Chelona’s Rise is a sealed sorcerer’s tower on the south-western tip of Moonlight Altar. The entrance displays the instruction to “Seek three great wise beasts”. The tower cannot be entered by simply attacking the door or finding a key. The seal opens only after the player locates and strikes three giant spectral turtles.
The three wise beasts
The turtles are spread across a wide area:
The airborne turtle is the one most often missed. It is not on ordinary ground and cannot be reached by riding around the tower.
Chelona’s Rise directory
The Altar South grace is located near the entrance to Chelona’s Rise. The reward inside the tower is the Ranni’s Dark Moon sorcery. The rise is therefore both a puzzle landmark and a major spell location.
Puzzle hazards
The wise-beast puzzle is sensitive to certain map and world-state changes. If a turtle appears to be missing:
Because the beasts are widely separated, mark each location mentally or with map markers as soon as it is found.
The three wise beasts
- 01Western cliff turtle: hanging from the cliff face near the tower.
- 02South-eastern turtle: positioned at the edge of a distant cliff.
- 03North-western airborne turtle: floating high above the plateau. Use the nearby Spiritspring to reach it.
Puzzle hazards
- 01Return to the tower and read the message again.
- 02Rest at a Site of Grace.
- 03Check the map locations again.
- 04Avoid assuming that a missing visual effect means the puzzle is permanently broken.
- 05Revisit the three positions after reloading the area.
Ringleader’s Evergaol
Ringleader’s Evergaol is on the north-western tip of Moonlight Altar. It contains Alecto, Black Knife Ringleader, the leader of the assassins connected to the Night of Black Knives.
As with other Evergaols, entering the centre transports the player into a self-contained boss arena. Ordinary co-operative summons and Spirit Ashes are not available inside a normal Evergaol, so the fight is a solo encounter unless a special exception applies elsewhere.
Ringleader’s Evergaol directory
Defeating Alecto awards Black Knife Tiche, one of the strongest spirit summons in the base game. Alecto is agile, deals heavy damage and uses attacks that punish healing and panic-rolling. Keep medium distance, avoid trading during her jumping attacks and attack during the recovery after her larger slashes.
---
Moonlight Altar has very few ordinary residents. It is not a functioning town and has no visible population comparable to Liurnia’s villages or the merchant roads.

Story-associated characters
Ranni is encountered here in connection with the final stage of her quest. The Two Fingers are not a conversational NPC in the ordinary sense, but their corpse is central to the cathedral’s story scene.
Story-associated characters
Associated factions
These are associations rather than active local communities. No Carian knights, Black Knife assassins or Finger Readers operate as ordinary NPC residents on the plateau.
Associated factions
Ordinary NPCs and services
No permanent merchants, blacksmiths, travelling traders, summonable quest NPCs or purchasable properties have been verified within Moonlight Altar.
Service directory
The cathedral grace is a checkpoint, not a shop or quest service.

Moonlight Altar is primarily a progression state rather than an area with its own independent questline. The plateau becomes available only after the player has reached the end of Ranni’s underground route. Its most important progression effects are:
The area’s content is largely fixed, but its surrounding quest context changes depending on how far the player has progressed through Ranni’s story. The cathedral should therefore be visited before treating the area as fully explored.
---
Moonlight Altar is one of the clearest places in the base game where three traditions overlap:
The Moonfolk Ruins and Lunar Estate Ruins suggest that the plateau predates the player’s arrival by a considerable period. Their names connect the area with moon-worshipping or moon-associated inhabitants, but the game deliberately leaves the exact history obscure.
The Cathedral of Manus Celes provides the strongest narrative evidence. Its underground chamber reveals that Ranni has destroyed her own Two Fingers. This is not a routine victory over a dungeon boss. It is a visual declaration that she has rejected the path imposed on her by the Fingers and is preparing to establish a different order.
The name “Manus Celes” is commonly interpreted through Latin as a reference to a hidden or celestial hand, though the precise intended translation is uncertain. The cathedral’s imagery and hidden chamber clearly make the Fingers central to its identity, but the exact linguistic reading should be treated as interpretation rather than confirmed in-game exposition.

Collectible directory
Collectible directory: steps
- 01The lift becomes usable after obtaining the Dark Moon Ring.
- 02The cathedral becomes the location of Ranni’s Two Fingers.
- 03The Dark Moon Greatsword becomes obtainable.
- 04Chelona’s Rise becomes accessible, allowing Ranni’s Dark Moon to be collected.

Is Moonlight Altar part of Liurnia?
Yes. It is a sub-region of Liurnia of the Lakes, located on a raised plateau above the south-western lake area.
Can I reach it without completing Ranni’s quest?
Not by the normal route. The lift is sealed and requires the Dark Moon Ring after the Astel section of Ranni’s quest.
Is the Cathedral of Manus Celes the whole area?
No. The cathedral is only one landmark. Moonlight Altar also includes Moonfolk Ruins, Lunar Estate Ruins, Chelona’s Rise and Ringleader’s Evergaol.
Are there any merchants?
No merchants or regular shops are verified within the plateau.
Can I summon inside Ringleader’s Evergaol?
Normal Evergaol rules apply. Co-operators and Spirit Ashes generally cannot be used inside the arena.
Which reward is easiest to miss?
Ranni’s Dark Moon is the most commonly missed major reward because Chelona’s Rise is sealed and its three turtles are spread across distant parts of the plateau and surrounding cliffs.
