Key takeaways
- Find the North Liurnia map fragment first It stands beside the road and ruined buildings near Academy Gate Town, making it the best reference point for the lake.
- The academy requires a Glintstone Key The key is found near Glintstone Dragon Smarag, west of the academy. You can retrieve it without defeating the dragon.
- Do not confuse the academy’s three gates The South Raya Lucaria Gate is the normal entrance, the Main Academy Gate is the central fast-travel and invasion area, and the East Raya Lucaria Gate is the route towards Bellum Highway.
- Academy Gate Town is worth exploring before entering the dungeon It contains map information, Sites of Grace, a Golden Seed, enemy groups and routes to the eastern and western sides of the lake.
- The academy’s major progression bosses are Red Wolf of Radagon and Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon. Red Wolf blocks the route through the Debate Parlor; Rennala is found in the Grand Library.
- Several encounters and quest events are progression-sensitive Yura, Thops, Varre, Patches and other characters may move or change dialogue depending on earlier actions, while the academy’s main rewards remain available through the normal base-game route.
About this guide
Scope: Base game Elden Ring. This guide uses North Liurnia of the Lakes as the northern map sector convention used by the game’s map fragments and major walkthroughs, rather than treating all of Liurnia as one undifferentiated area. It covers the flooded basin around Raya Lucaria Academy, Academy Gate Town, the Temple Quarter, Laskyar Ruins and the northern lake approaches. It does not fold in West Liurnia’s Caria Manor and Moonlight Altar, East Liurnia’s Bellum Highway and Ruin-Strewn Precipice, or the Village of the Albinaurics and its southern approaches. The boundary is practical rather than a separately named overworld region.
Overview
North Liurnia is the flooded heart of the region and the approach to the Academy of Raya Lucaria, the most important institution in Liurnia’s history. The academy dominates the landscape from almost every direction, but the surrounding lake is much more than a route to its gates. Sunken ruins, shallow islands, magical wildlife, wandering merchants, enemy patrols and several quest-related locations are spread across the water.
The area has two contrasting layers. The lake basin is open, exposed and navigable almost immediately after reaching Liurnia, while the academy is a dense legacy dungeon with its own progression loop, shortcuts, teachers, rooftops and major bosses. Academy Gate Town forms the bridge between these two spaces. It is a partially submerged settlement whose surviving buildings and broken streets contain useful items, enemies and several routes towards the academy.
The academy itself is not merely an optional side dungeon. Defeating its ruler, Rennala, is one of the most useful milestones in the early and middle game. Rennala grants a Great Rune and unlocks the ability to reallocate character attributes, although the rebirth system requires Larval Tears.
Named places in scope
Some of these are named locations, while others are named internal sections or landmarks used by guides and the game’s navigation structure. The academy’s internal labels are especially useful when following quest or item directions.

Named places in scope
From Limgrave or Stormveil
The most direct route is north from Limgrave through Stormveil Castle. After defeating or bypassing Godrick, continue through the castle’s northern exit to the Lake-Facing Cliffs. This Site of Grace marks the southern entry to Liurnia and begins the lake route.
You do not have to defeat Godrick to reach Liurnia. Stormveil can be bypassed by following the narrow path around its eastern side. This is useful for low-level characters who want to reach the lake, obtain the map, meet Liurnia’s NPCs or begin the Academy route early.
From the southern lake
From Lake-Facing Cliffs, ride north-west or north-east across the shallow water. The Liurnia Lake Shore Site of Grace is a useful early hub. From there:
The lake is generally safe to cross on Torrent, but movement can be interrupted by enemy attacks. Avoid fighting Glintstone Dragon Smarag in the open until you have already collected the key or are prepared for a long field-boss battle.
From the southern lake: steps
- 01Ride north-west to locate the North Liurnia map fragment near Academy Gate Town.
- 02Explore Laskyar Ruins on the approach.
- 03Continue towards the academy gates.
- 04Search the area around the academy for the Glintstone Key and the Church of the Cuckoo.
- 05Enter through the South Raya Lucaria Gate.
- 06Use the academy Sites of Grace to progress towards the Debate Parlor and Grand Library.
From East Liurnia
The East Raya Lucaria Gate connects the academy to the eastern road system. Continuing east leads towards Bellum Highway, Bellum Church and the Grand Lift of Dectus. These are neighbouring routes rather than part of the northern basin itself.
From West Liurnia
The western lake route approaches the Temple Quarter, Crystalline Woods and the academy’s western side. Caria Manor is farther north-west and should be treated as a separate West Liurnia destination.
---
The open-water portion of North Liurnia rewards slow exploration. Torrent can move across shallow water, and the map contains numerous low islands, broken walls and submerged structures. The main threats are not usually overwhelming individually, but several enemies can attack from concealment while a larger magical enemy controls the area.
Academy Gate Town
Academy Gate Town was built around the road to Raya Lucaria. It is now partially submerged, leaving broken streets, rooflines and isolated buildings above the water. The location is useful for:
The town is easier to search from horseback. Sweep the outer streets first, then return on foot where necessary to climb buildings, inspect corners and collect items. Several enemies use ranged glintstone attacks, so avoid remaining stationary in the open.
Laskyar Ruins
Laskyar Ruins lie south-east of the academy approach and are one of the first ruined settlements encountered after entering the lake. The ruins contain hostile soldiers, undead and item pickups among collapsed structures. They also have a transporter trap that can move the player to a distant location, so inspect suspicious chests carefully and use Sites of Grace before experimenting.
The ruins are a useful early stop because they demonstrate the area’s main design language: shallow water, broken masonry, concealed enemies and magical ambushes. They also sit near routes towards the lake’s central and eastern portions.
Temple Quarter
The Temple Quarter is a flooded ruin complex west of the academy. It contains spectral and aquatic enemies, item pickups and a Site of Grace. The area is particularly valuable for players searching for academy-related progression because it lies close to Glintstone Dragon Smarag and the western approach to the academy.
The dragon can be fought in the open water, but the surrounding ruins provide opportunities to break line of sight. A safer option is to ride in, collect the Academy Glintstone Key, and return later for the boss.
Crystalline Woods and Scenic Isle
Crystalline Woods is a watery region around the academy’s southern approaches. Scenic Isle is a small island that acts as a resting point and a meeting location for certain characters. It is also associated with Patches and the wider Liurnia quest network.
Scenic Isle is worth checking whenever you pass through North Liurnia because NPC positions can change after major story events. Patches’ presence is not simply a permanent shop arrangement, and his dialogue depends on how his earlier encounter was handled.
---
Raya Lucaria Academy is North Liurnia’s central legacy dungeon. It is a fortified school of glintstone sorcery, occupied by scholars, marionettes, wolves, living jars and other magical or animated guardians. The dungeon alternates between formal courtyards and lecture spaces, narrow rooftops, graveyards and underground passages.
The three academy gates
South Raya Lucaria Gate
This is the main entrance from the lake. It is sealed by a magical barrier and requires the Academy Glintstone Key. The first key can be found near Glintstone Dragon Smarag, west of the academy. The dragon does not need to be killed to obtain it.
Approach the dragon’s sleeping position carefully. Take the key from the body near the dragon, then escape on Torrent. If the dragon wakes, ride away rather than trying to win an unplanned fight.
Main Academy Gate
The Main Academy Gate is the central travel point and one of the most important multiplayer locations in the sector. It has a Site of Grace, summoning activity and a path towards the eastern bridge. The sealed barrier here supports travel in one direction and returns the player towards the academy depending on the chosen route.
This gate is also associated with a major invasion event connected to Bloody Finger Hunter Yura. The event requires the player to find and activate Yura’s red summon sign on the bridge. Completing it provides quest progression and a useful reward.
East Raya Lucaria Gate
The eastern gate provides access towards the road to Bellum Highway. It is not the preferred route for first entering the legacy dungeon, but it is useful for travelling between the academy and eastern Liurnia.
---
Academy progression route
The dungeon has many side routes. The main progression is straightforward once the Schoolhouse Classroom is found, but exploration around the rooftops and courtyard is worthwhile because the academy contains spells, weapons, armour, Ashes of War and upgrade materials.
A reliable first-clear route is
- 01Enter through the South Raya Lucaria Gate after obtaining the Academy Glintstone Key.
- 02Activate the first Site of Grace and search the opening courtyard.
- 03Follow the academy rooftops and courtyards, watching for sorcerers firing from balconies.
- 04Reach the Church of the Cuckoo and the graveyard beyond it.
- 05Use the graveyard route to approach the Schoolhouse Classroom.
- 06Rest at the Schoolhouse Classroom Site of Grace.
- 07Continue through the academy towards the Debate Parlor.
- 08Defeat Red Wolf of Radagon.
- 09Explore the Debate Parlor and adjoining courtyard.
- 10Cross the courtyard and ascend towards the Grand Library.
- 11Defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon.
Church of the Cuckoo
The Church of the Cuckoo is an interior academy landmark and a useful waypoint. It contains scholars and ambushes, but its main importance is navigational. The route beyond it leads into the graveyard and towards the Schoolhouse Classroom.
The academy’s scholars are vulnerable to interruption but dangerous at range. Prioritise enemies carrying staffs or those positioned on elevated platforms. A shield, bow, throwing weapon or fast gap-closing skill makes the approach considerably safer.
Schoolhouse Classroom
The Schoolhouse Classroom is the academy’s main mid-dungeon checkpoint. From here, the player can reach the Debate Parlor and the route towards Red Wolf of Radagon.
Look carefully around the classroom and adjacent corridors. Some rewards are placed behind bookshelves, side doors and narrow ledges, and not every route is part of the critical path.
Debate Parlor
The Debate Parlor is the arena for Red Wolf of Radagon. After the fight, the adjoining courtyard opens the route towards the upper academy and Grand Library. The courtyard contains multiple enemies and is easy to approach too quickly. Clear ranged opponents first, then deal with melee enemies and rooftop threats.
Red Wolf of Radagon
Red Wolf of Radagon is a fast magical beast using sword-like spectral attacks, glintstone projectiles and rapid leaps. Its arena is relatively open, but the boss can close distance abruptly.
The fight is easier if the player avoids panic-rolling away from every attack. Stay at a manageable distance, punish the end of its lunges and use summons to divide its attention if necessary. Defeating it grants access to the upper academy route.
Raya Lucaria Grand Library
The Grand Library is Rennala’s arena and the academy’s final major room. After defeating her, the room becomes a permanent service location for rebirth and cosmetic appearance changes.
Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon
Rennala’s first phase requires breaking the protective enchantments around her scholars. Search for the glowing, singing scholar and attack it. After enough enchantments are broken, Rennala falls and becomes vulnerable. Repeat the process until the phase ends.
The second phase is a conventional boss fight with wide magical attacks, summoned creatures and a large arena. Close-range pressure can be effective, but players should watch for the full-moon projectile, beam attacks and summoned creatures. The fight is optional for completing the wider game, but it is highly significant for character development.
Rewards and services
The Great Rune of the Unborn functions differently from most Great Runes. It does not require activation at a Divine Tower. Rebirth requires a Larval Tear, and each respec redistributes the character’s attributes from the current starting class totals.
---
North Liurnia has fewer permanent residents than some other regions, but it is a major crossroads for NPC stories.
Named characters associated with the area
Not all of these characters stand inside North Liurnia at the same time. Several are connected to the wider Liurnia story but belong physically to West Liurnia, East Liurnia or other regions. They are included here as story-associated visitors or routes, not as residents of the northern sector.
Named characters associated with the area
Thops
Thops is found at the Church of Irith in southern Liurnia, outside the strict North Liurnia boundary, but his quest is directly connected to Raya Lucaria. He asks for an Academy Glintstone Key. The first key cannot be given to him, but a second key found inside the academy can be delivered to advance his story.
This is a common missable detail: do not give Thops the key needed to enter the academy. Obtain the spare key later from inside the dungeon.
Yura
Yura’s Liurnia event takes place near the Main Academy Gate. Activate his red summon sign on the bridge to assist him against an invading Bloody Finger. This encounter is part of Yura’s wider questline and can be affected by progression elsewhere.
The reward and later dialogue are tied to the invasion sequence rather than ordinary exploration. If the summon sign is absent, check Yura’s earlier Limgrave events and reload the area after meeting the relevant conditions.
Varre
White-Faced Varre begins near the First Step in Limgrave and later moves to Liurnia’s Rose Church, south-west of the academy sector. Rose Church is often grouped with the northern lake route in general walkthroughs, but it is geographically separate from the academy itself.
His quest provides one of the earliest routes towards Mohgwyn Palace. It also includes an invasion-related progression step. Players who want to preserve this route should avoid killing Varre before completing his dialogue chain.
Patches
Patches can appear at Scenic Isle after his earlier Limgrave encounter. His dialogue and stock depend on previous interactions. Scenic Isle should therefore be revisited rather than treated as a one-time location.
Ranni’s wider route
Ranni’s quest begins at Ranni’s Rise in West Liurnia, beyond Caria Manor. North Liurnia serves as a transit region during parts of the wider story, but the Three Sisters and Caria Manor are not part of this guide’s geographical scope.
---
Major encounters in the northern sector
Because Liurnia’s field-boss lists vary by guide boundary, the academy bosses and Glintstone Dragon Smarag are the secure North Liurnia entries. Night-time field bosses on the outer roads should be checked against the map sector rather than assumed to belong to the academy basin.
Major encounters in the northern sector
| Encounter | Location | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Glintstone Dragon Smarag | West of Raya Lucaria, near the Academy Glintstone Key | Key can be taken without defeating the dragon |
| Red Wolf of Radagon | Debate Parlor | Main academy progression boss |
| Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon | Grand Library | Grants Great Rune of the Unborn and unlocks rebirth |
| Night’s Cavalry | Northern Liurnia roads, at night | Optional field boss; exact grouping depends on regional guide boundaries |
| Deathbird | Lake and ruin approaches, at night | Optional night-time field boss; check the surrounding Liurnia sector |
| Tibia Mariner | Liurnia’s lake and ruin region | Skeleton-summoning field boss; commonly assigned to eastern or southern Liurnia depending on the exact site |
Common enemy groups
Magic resistance is particularly useful against academy scholars, but physical damage remains reliable. In the lake, Torrent’s mobility is usually more valuable than heavy armour.
---
Important fixed rewards
The exact item list is distributed across the academy, ruined settlements, corpses, scarabs and NPC interactions. Fixed rewards should be distinguished from enemy drops. Scholars and soldiers may drop equipment randomly, while boss rewards and key items are fixed.
Functional services
Merchants
Nomadic Merchants and isolated merchants can be found around Liurnia’s roads and lake approaches. Their stock is tied to their individual location. Do not infer that every decorative stall or ruined shopfront is a functioning business.
Sites of Grace
Some guides assign the outer lake Sites of Grace differently between North, East and South Liurnia. The academy and Academy Gate Town checkpoints are the clearest core of this sector.
---
---
Sites of Grace: Important checkpoints include
Sites of Grace: For a thorough but efficient first visit
- 01Reach Lake-Facing Cliffs and activate the Site of Grace.
- 02Ride into the lake and activate Liurnia Lake Shore.
- 03Travel north-west to Academy Gate Town.
- 04Collect Map: Liurnia, North.
- 05Explore Academy Gate Town and collect its visible rewards.
- 06Visit Laskyar Ruins.
- 07Search Scenic Isle and check for NPC dialogue.
- 08Ride west to Temple Quarter.
- 09Collect the Academy Glintstone Key near Glintstone Dragon Smarag.
- 10Return to the South Raya Lucaria Gate.
- 11Enter the academy and activate the first internal Site of Grace.
- 12Explore the Church of the Cuckoo and graveyard.
- 13Activate Schoolhouse Classroom.
- 14Clear the Debate Parlor route and defeat Red Wolf of Radagon.
- 15Search the courtyard and upper academy.
- 16Defeat Rennala.
- 17Return to earlier NPCs, especially Thops, Yura and Scenic Isle visitors.
- 18Use the new rebirth service only after deciding whether your current build needs correction.
Glintstone Dragon Smarag
The dragon is deliberately positioned as a gatekeeper, but its presence is misleading. The Academy Glintstone Key is accessible without a successful boss kill. This makes the academy available to characters who are under-levelled for the dragon.
Academy rooftops
The rooftops contain routes that are easy to miss from the main courtyard. Look for ladders, broken roof sections and drops onto lower platforms. Several rewards are placed away from the obvious route, and some enemies are positioned to punish players who sprint past the first courtyard.
Illusory walls and hidden routes
The academy uses false walls and concealed passages, particularly around classrooms, corridors and book-lined interiors. Strike suspicious dead ends, but do not assume every bookshelf is an illusion. The most valuable discoveries are often reached by looking for a side path rather than repeatedly attacking walls.
Night-time encounters
Some Liurnia field bosses appear only at night. If a named encounter is missing, rest at a Site of Grace and pass time until night. Field bosses can also disappear after defeat, so their absence is not evidence that the location was never part of the regional route.
Progression-sensitive NPCs
NPCs can move after bosses are defeated, after major quest events or after the player enters new regions. If a character is missing:
---
Raya Lucaria represents the intellectual and magical centre of Liurnia. Its scholars study glintstone and the stars, while the academy’s conflict with the Carian royal family reflects the region’s fractured political history. Rennala remains the academy’s symbolic ruler, though her condition in the Grand Library shows the collapse of her former authority.
The flooded Gate Town is a reminder that Liurnia is not simply a prosperous magical kingdom. Much of the region is sinking, abandoned or contested. The academy survives above the lake, but its lower approaches are occupied by hostile scholars, animated constructs and creatures drawn to its magic.
Rennala’s Great Rune and rebirth service also make North Liurnia an important character-building milestone. The area is not only a route towards the next region. It is where players can revise a build, obtain a large collection of sorceries and equipment, and decide whether to continue through the academy’s story or explore the wider lake first.
---
NPCs and quests
---
Do I have to defeat Glintstone Dragon Smarag to enter the academy?
No. You need the Academy Glintstone Key, but the key can be collected near the sleeping dragon without defeating it.
Is Raya Lucaria Academy mandatory?
No, although it is one of the game’s major legacy dungeons and contains a major Great Rune holder. The wider game can be approached through other routes, but defeating Rennala is useful for rebirth and character progression.
Can I respec immediately after defeating Rennala?
You can use rebirth after the fight, but each respec requires a Larval Tear. Rennala also becomes an appearance customisation service.
Are Caria Manor and Rose Church part of North Liurnia?
Caria Manor is normally classified as West Liurnia. Rose Church lies in the western or central lake approaches depending on the guide’s boundary convention. They are neighbouring story locations, not part of the academy’s immediate northern basin.
Where is the North Liurnia map?
It is beside the road near Academy Gate Town. Ride north-west from Liurnia Lake Shore and look for the map stele among the flooded ruins.
What level should I be?
The academy is commonly approached in the early-to-mid game, but character level alone is not decisive. Weapon upgrades, magic resistance and comfort with ranged enemies matter more than a single recommended level. Glintstone Dragon Smarag can be postponed, and the key can be taken without fighting it.
