Key takeaways
- The ordinary route requires the Rold Medallion, received from Melina after defeating Morgott, the Omen King.
- The lift’s normal destination is the Mountaintops of the Giants, beginning near the Zamor Ruins.
- The secret route requires both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion The right half comes from Old Albus in the Village of the Albinaurics, while the left half is found at Castle Sol after defeating Commander Niall.
- The Black Blade Kindred is encountered on the approach from the Forbidden Lands It is associated with the route to the lift but is classified as a Forbidden Lands boss rather than a boss inside the lift structure.
- The lift has a Site of Grace and a Finger Reader Crone, but no shop, forge, merchant or conventional settlement services.
- The Hidden Path to the Haligtree is a separate dungeon beyond the secret lift route. Its enemies, loot and boss encounter should not be counted as part of the lift proper.
About this guide
Scope: Base game Elden Ring. Boundary note: This guide treats the Grand Lift of Rold as the lift structure, its immediate approach and its Site of Grace. It does not merge the entire Forbidden Lands, Mountaintops of the Giants, Consecrated Snowfield or Hidden Path to the Haligtree into one location. Those are neighbouring or connected areas, covered separately where they affect access and progression.
Overview
The Grand Lift of Rold is the northern gate from Leyndell into the late-game regions of Elden Ring. It stands at the eastern end of the Forbidden Lands and provides the normal route to the Mountaintops of the Giants. After acquiring both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion, the same lift also becomes the entrance to the concealed route leading through the Hidden Path to the Haligtree and onwards to the Consecrated Snowfield.
The lift itself is a compact transition location rather than a large exploration zone. Its significance comes from its branching routes, its place in the main story, its connection to Miquella’s hidden northern lands and the powerful enemy guarding the road immediately before it.

Immediate neighbouring places
The last four are not physically part of the lift. They are included because they are direct destinations or important route landmarks.

Immediate neighbouring places
Reaching the lift from Leyndell
The Grand Lift of Rold is reached through the eastern side of Leyndell after the capital’s main story sequence. The normal progression is:
The lift’s ordinary activation is story-gated. Before Morgott is defeated, the required medallion is not available through normal progression. The lift therefore marks the transition from Leyndell’s central story to the Mountaintops of the Giants.
Practical approach
The Forbidden Lands road has poor visibility and contains hidden or partially concealed Vulgar Militia. Torrent is useful for crossing the area quickly, particularly if the objective is simply to reach the lift. The Black Blade Kindred can be bypassed by riding past it, although the boss arena occupies the approach and the fight may begin if the player gets too close.
---
Reaching the lift from Leyndell: steps
- 01Defeat Morgott, the Omen King.
- 02Speak to Melina and receive the Rold Medallion.
- 03Return towards the capital’s eastern exit.
- 04Descend into the Forbidden Lands.
- 05Follow the road through the fog and Vulgar Militia ambushes.
- 06Pass the Black Blade Kindred or defeat it.
- 07Activate the Grand Lift of Rold Site of Grace.
- 08Use the lift with the Rold Medallion.
Practical approach: A cautious route is
- 01Leave the capital and activate the Forbidden Lands Site of Grace.
- 02Stay on the main road rather than searching every patch of fog.
- 03Watch for militia ambushes at the roadside.
- 04Keep enough stamina to sprint past the Black Blade Kindred.
- 05Touch the Grand Lift of Rold Site of Grace before attempting further exploration.
Normal medallion: Mountaintops of the Giants
The Rold Medallion activates the standard route. The lift rises to the western side of the Mountaintops of the Giants, where the player emerges close to the road leading towards the Zamor Ruins. The regional map fragment is found a short distance along this route.
The normal route is effectively required for the main story. The player must cross the Mountaintops, reach the Forge of the Giants and defeat the Fire Giant before the late-game sequence can continue.
Normal destination directory
Not all of these are immediately beside the lift. They are listed as the main named places reached by continuing through the normal destination region.
Normal destination directory
Secret medallion: Consecrated Snowfield
The secret route is activated by switching the lift’s interaction to Hoist secret medallion after both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion have been obtained. The resulting journey does not place the player directly in the open Snowfield. Instead, it leads through the Hidden Path to the Haligtree, a distinct underground passage with invisible platforms, Vulgar Militia and a Stray Mimic Tear encounter.
After leaving the Hidden Path, the player reaches the Consecrated Snowfield. This region is misty and visibility is limited in much of the open area. Its main route eventually leads towards Ordina, Liturgical Town and the entrance to Miquella’s Haligtree.
Secret route directory
These are connected destinations, not additional rooms or services inside the Grand Lift of Rold.

Secret route directory
Haligtree Secret Medallion (Right)
The right half is obtained from Old Albus, an Albinauric hiding in the Village of the Albinaurics in Liurnia of the Lakes. He is disguised as a large pot. Strike the pot to reveal him, then speak to him to receive the medallion half. The item can also be obtained by killing him, although doing so removes the conversational route.
The right half is also tied to Latenna the Albinauric’s questline. If the player is pursuing Latenna’s story, it is preferable to speak with Old Albus and later meet Latenna rather than treating the medallion solely as a key item.
Haligtree Secret Medallion (Left)
The left half is found at Castle Sol in the Mountaintops of the Giants. The player must progress through the castle and defeat Commander Niall. After the boss encounter, the upper section of the castle contains the medallion half.
Activation checklist
Before returning to the lift, confirm that the inventory contains:
The two medallion halves are not used separately. They must be combined in the inventory before the secret action becomes available.
---
At the lift
- 01Stand on the central platform.
- 02Interact with the lift.
- 03Use the option to switch between the normal and secret medallion actions.
- 04Select the secret medallion.
- 05Ride through the Hidden Path to the Haligtree.
- 06Continue through the dungeon to reach the Consecrated Snowfield.
Finger Reader Crone
A Finger Reader Crone is present beside the Grand Lift of Rold Site of Grace. She provides the usual Finger Reader-style dialogue and contributes atmosphere and lore rather than offering a shop or mechanical service. The location’s directory identifies her as the named NPC associated with the lift.
Characters associated with connected routes
The following characters are important to the lift’s progression but are not residents of the lift itself:
Millicent’s summon sign is available for the Black Blade Kindred fight if the player has given her the Valkyrie’s Prosthesis and spoken to her at Dominula, Windmill Village. This is a conditional summon rather than a permanent NPC presence at the lift.
---
Black Blade Kindred
The Black Blade Kindred appears on the Forbidden Lands approach shortly before the Grand Lift of Rold. It is a powerful Valiant Gargoyle associated with Maliketh and the Rune of Death. This particular encounter uses a twinblade and axe and drops two weapons:
The fight is optional. The player can ride past the boss and activate the lift without defeating it. The encounter is therefore best understood as a gatekeeper on the road rather than as a mandatory boss of the Grand Lift location.
Enemies inside the connected secret route
The Hidden Path to the Haligtree contains its own encounters. These do not belong to the lift proper, but they matter when using the secret function:
The Stray Mimic Tear guards a chest containing a Deathroot.
Enemy directory by boundary
Consecrated Snowfield and later destinations
The final group should not be counted as Grand Lift of Rold enemies. They belong to the Snowfield and its subareas.
---
The lift itself has a limited item inventory. Its importance lies mainly in access rather than treasure collection.
Strict lift and immediate approach
Consecrated Snowfield and later destinations
Items directly associated with the lift
These are progression items obtained elsewhere, not loose pickups inside the lift structure.
Items on the immediate route
The Forbidden Lands approach contains scattered loot, including a Golden Seed and a Somber Smithing Stone in the broader route according to walkthrough coverage. These are associated with the Forbidden Lands rather than the lift interior.
Rewards from the associated boss
The Hidden Path also contains the Spelldrake Talisman +2, but this is a dungeon collectible and should not be attributed to the Grand Lift itself.
---
Rewards from the associated boss
| Encounter | Location classification | Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Black Blade Kindred | Forbidden Lands approach | Gargoyle’s Black Blades; Gargoyle’s Black Axe |
| Stray Mimic Tear | Hidden Path to the Haligtree | Deathroot |
| Commander Niall | Castle Sol | Haligtree Secret Medallion (Left), plus boss rewards |
| Old Albus | Village of the Albinaurics | Haligtree Secret Medallion (Right) |
Grand Lift of Rold Site of Grace
The Site of Grace is positioned beside the entrance to the lift structure. It is the most important practical facility at the location. It allows the player to:
The Site of Grace remains useful throughout the game because the player may return to the Mountaintops or Snowfield repeatedly while completing optional areas, NPC quests and end-game preparation.
No commercial services
The Finger Reader Crone is a lore-associated NPC, not a shopkeeper. Do not infer a service from the presence of a Finger Reader.

No commercial services: steps
- 01Follow the Snowfield route according to your objective. Possible destinations include Ordina, Liturgical Town, the Apostate Derelict, Yelough Anix Ruins, Mohgwyn Palace’s waygate and the dungeons scattered across the region.
Fog and ambushes
The Forbidden Lands approach is deliberately difficult to read. Vulgar Militia may remain hidden until the player is close, and the fog makes it difficult to judge the distance to the lift. Riding directly along the road is usually safer than stopping to fight every group.
The lift has two interaction states
Players who have collected both Haligtree Secret Medallion halves may still see only the regular lift action if they do not switch the interaction option. The secret route is not a different physical lift and does not require finding another elevator elsewhere.
The Hidden Path is not a simple corridor
The secret route contains misleading ledges and invisible platforms. The most notable optional section involves dropping from the large central chamber onto hidden platforms. Some of the dungeon’s most valuable loot is placed away from the obvious path, including the Spelldrake Talisman +2.
Ordina is a separate progression gate
Reaching the Consecrated Snowfield does not immediately grant entry to Miquella’s Haligtree. At Ordina, the player must enter the Evergaol version of the town and light four flames. This is a separate puzzle and should not be confused with activating the Grand Lift.
---
Main-story state
The lift’s normal use changes the world’s progression state by opening the Mountaintops of the Giants after Morgott. The Fire Giant and the Forge of the Giants are required for the main ending route, although many optional areas remain available before or after this point.
NPC quest timing
The Grand Lift can be used during several questlines, but the surrounding characters are not all permanently available. In particular:
Because Elden Ring questlines can change location availability after major story events, complete any desired NPC conversations before advancing major late-game stages.
New Game Plus
In New Game Plus, the lift remains part of the normal progression structure. The player must again reach the relevant story state and obtain the required progression items for the route they wish to use. The location is not a permanently unlocked shortcut across cycles.

Is the Grand Lift of Rold the same as the Grand Lift of Dectus?
No. The Grand Lift of Dectus connects Liurnia with Altus Plateau. The Grand Lift of Rold connects the Forbidden Lands with the Mountaintops of the Giants and also opens the secret route to the Consecrated Snowfield.
Do I have to defeat Black Blade Kindred?
No. It is an optional boss on the Forbidden Lands approach. You can ride past it and use the lift.
Can I reach the Consecrated Snowfield with only one secret medallion half?
No. Both the right and left halves are required. The right half is obtained from Old Albus in the Village of the Albinaurics, while the left half is found at Castle Sol.
Is the Hidden Path to the Haligtree part of the Grand Lift?
It is directly connected to the lift’s secret function, but it is a separate location. Its loot, enemies and Stray Mimic Tear should not be counted as content inside the lift itself.
Does using the secret medallion consume it?
The medallion is a key item used to activate the route. It is not treated like a consumable that must be replaced for every journey.
Is there a merchant at the lift?
No verified merchant or shop operates at the Grand Lift of Rold. The Finger Reader Crone is present, but she does not provide commercial services.
What is the best order for the two routes?
For a first playthrough, use the normal route after Morgott, explore the Mountaintops and collect the left medallion half from Castle Sol. Then obtain the right half from Liurnia and return to activate the secret route. This keeps the main story and optional Haligtree route clearly separated.
---
The Grand Lift of Rold is more than a transport mechanism. It is the controlled passage from the capital’s central power structure into the isolated northern territories. Its two destinations reflect two different forms of progression:
The secret medallion’s description frames the route as a path towards Miquella’s Haligtree, while the Consecrated Snowfield itself is presented as a trial for those who were not chosen for the more direct path. This makes the lift a structural and thematic junction: one road follows the Tarnished’s required journey, while the other reveals a concealed route towards Miquella’s abandoned and hidden legacy.
Real-world or series inspiration
The location is part of Elden Ring’s recurring use of monumental lifts to connect otherwise impassable vertical regions. Unlike a conventional town or fortress, the Grand Lift of Rold functions as a ceremonial threshold. Its statues, platform and ritual medallion interactions make travel feel like an act of recognition or permission rather than ordinary transport.
There is no need to merge it with similarly named lifts from earlier FromSoftware games. The Grand Lift of Rold is an Elden Ring location with its own medallion system, story requirements and dual-route design.
---
This guide separates the Grand Lift of Rold from the larger areas reached through it. The lift itself has a small confirmed directory: one Site of Grace, one Finger Reader Crone and a nearby boss encounter classified under the Forbidden Lands. Most item and enemy lists commonly associated with the lift actually belong to the Forbidden Lands, Hidden Path to the Haligtree, Mountaintops of the Giants or Consecrated Snowfield.
The exact visual boundary between the lift’s exterior approach and the Forbidden Lands is not expressed as a hard in-game border. For that reason, the Black Blade Kindred is identified as an associated approach encounter, not as an enemy strictly inside the lift structure. Similarly, the Hidden Path and Consecrated Snowfield are treated as connected destinations rather than subareas of the lift itself.
