Key takeaways
- There are two principal ways into Scadu Altus the normal route through Castle Ensis after Rellana, and an alternative route that uses a Spiritspring and the Fort of Reprimand.
- Shadow Keep is not a single linear dungeon Its Main Gate, Church District, West Rampart and Specimen Storehouse form a large interconnected complex with routes that change after the Church District is drained.
- Moorth Ruins is a major exploration junction Its underground route leads to Bonny Village and the eastern half of Scadu Altus, while another route continues towards the Abyssal Woods through Darklight Catacombs.
- The eastern region contains the Cathedral of Manus Metyr, Count Ymir’s base and the starting point for one of the DLC’s most important optional questlines.
- Scadutree Blessing is particularly important here Scadu Altus contains numerous Scadutree Fragments, including those at Miquella’s Crosses, churches, camps, Shadow Keep and the Golden Hippopotamus encounter.
- Several apparent landmarks are mission or progression locations rather than ordinary settlements. The Church District, Finger Birthing Grounds, Storehouse sections and Village of Flies should not be treated as independent towns or conventional services.
About this guide
Shadow of the Erdtree guide Spoilers: This guide discusses major locations, NPC quests, optional areas, bosses and late-game progression changes. It includes spoilers for Shadow Keep, Count Ymir’s questline and the route into the Abyssal Woods.
Overview
Scadu Altus is the central highland region of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. It is the largest connective area in the Realm of Shadow, linking the southern approach from Castle Ensis and the Fort of Reprimand with Shadow Keep, the eastern finger ruins, the Church District, Bonny Village and several routes into the Abyssal Woods, Scaduview and the northern parts of the DLC map.
The region is easy to underestimate because “Scadu Altus” is sometimes used informally to mean only the open plateau around Highroad Cross and Moorth Ruins. In broader regional map classifications, however, it includes the open countryside, Shadow Keep and its internal districts, Fort of Reprimand, Bonny Village, Bonny Gaol, the Recluses’ River routes, the Cathedral of Manus Metyr and several connected dungeons. The exact treatment of borderline locations can differ between map databases, so this guide states its scope explicitly rather than treating every nearby place as part of the same outdoor zone.
Scadu Altus is also the main story hub of the expansion. Shadow Keep dominates its centre, while the region’s eastern side contains Count Ymir’s Cathedral of Manus Metyr and the quest route to Metyr, Mother of Fingers. The western and southern approaches offer optional bosses, Scadutree Fragments and alternative routes that allow exploration before completing Castle Ensis.

What counts as Scadu Altus?
Shadow Keep and associated interiors
Shadow Keep is a legacy dungeon rather than ordinary open terrain, but it is physically and narratively the centre of Scadu Altus. The region’s broad map classification lists it alongside the open plateau and gives Shadow Keep its own internal Sites of Grace and boss encounters.
Open Scadu Altus
Neighbouring regions and separate continuities
The following places should not be silently merged into Scadu Altus:
---
Neighbouring regions and separate continuities
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Gravesite Plain | the southern starting region, including Castle Ensis and its approach. |
| Scaduview | the high northern area seen from Shadow Keep’s upper routes. It is closely connected to Shadow Keep but is generally listed separately. |
| Abyssal Woods | reached through Darklight Catacombs. The catacombs are in Scadu Altus, but the forest beyond is a separate region. |
| Rauh Base and the Ancient Ruins of Rauh | reached through different routes from Scadu Altus and Shadow Keep, but classified as separate regions. |
| Enir-Ilim | the late-game area beyond the sealing progression associated with the DLC’s main story. |
| Altus Plateau | the similarly named base-game region in the Lands Between. Scadu Altus is not the same place and has no normal overworld connection to it. |
The central plateau
The central road runs from the Castle Ensis exit towards Shadow Keep. Highroad Cross is the first major rest point, with a Miquella’s Cross and a Scadutree Fragment. Continuing north brings the player to the map stele and the road towards Shadow Keep. A smaller military camp north of Highroad Cross contains another Scadutree Fragment.
The terrain around Highroad Cross is deliberately open, with roads splitting towards Shadow Keep, the western plateau and Moorth Ruins. The area is patrolled by Messmer soldiers, mounted enemies and Furnace Golems. It is a good place to begin gathering Scadutree Blessing upgrades before tackling Shadow Keep.
Moorth Ruins
Moorth Ruins lies south-east of Highroad Cross. Its broken masonry, underground passages and scattered enemies conceal one of the most useful route junctions in the region.
The ruins are associated with Dryleaf Dane. After obtaining the relevant gesture from Miquella’s Cross, the player can challenge Dane to a duel near the Moorth Ruins Site of Grace. This encounter begins the Dryleaf martial-arts thread and rewards progression towards Dryleaf equipment.
A concealed route beneath the ruins leads to Bonny Village. This route is essential if the player enters Scadu Altus through the Fort of Reprimand, since it provides access to the eastern plateau without returning through Castle Ensis.
Bonny Village
Bonny Village lies east of Moorth Ruins, beyond a long stone bridge. It is a settlement of flesh-flaying enemies rather than a friendly town. The village itself contains no conventional merchant service, inn or safe civic hub.
The bridge and ravine make the village’s vertical layout easy to misread. Explore below the broken bridge rather than assuming the village ends at its upper houses.
The western plateau and Church of the Crusade
The western side of Scadu Altus contains wooded terrain, military camps and the Church of the Crusade. Fire Knight Queelign’s invasion is associated with the church and his questline. A Furnace Golem patrols the broader western roads.
The Church of the Crusade is one of the region’s most valuable early stops because it contains two Scadutree Fragments together. The surrounding area also provides a practical approach to Shadow Keep’s Church District.
Eastern Scadu Altus
The east is more fragmented than the central plateau. It includes:
This is the region’s most quest-heavy side. Count Ymir and Swordhand of Night Jolan are based at the cathedral, while the finger ruins and underground Finger Birthing Grounds form the main setting for Ymir’s storyline.
Shadow Keep
Shadow Keep is a huge fortress built around several distinct routes. Its main approach leads through the Main Gate Plaza and the Golden Hippopotamus. From there, the player can explore the Church District, West Rampart and Specimen Storehouse.
The Church District is initially flooded. Draining the water changes the available routes and exposes previously inaccessible areas. The Storehouse is a vertical library and specimen hall filled with Fire Knights, skeletal displays and branching platforms. Its upper levels lead towards Messmer’s Dark Chamber, while alternate routes connect to the keep’s northern exterior and Scaduview.
The regional map lists Shadow Keep as one of Scadu Altus’s two legacy dungeons, alongside Fort of Reprimand.

Main route: Castle Ensis
The main route is the intended story entrance. Highroad Cross is described by regional map resources as the first Site of Grace in Scadu Altus after passing through the gate beyond Rellana.
Main route: Castle Ensis: steps
- 01Enter Castle Ensis from Gravesite Plain.
- 02Progress through the castle.
- 03Defeat Rellana, Twin Moon Knight.
- 04Follow the road beyond the castle exit.
- 05Rest at Highroad Cross.
- 06Collect the Scadutree Fragment beside Miquella’s Cross.
- 07Continue north to the Scadu Altus map stele.
Alternative route: Fort of Reprimand
Scadu Altus can also be reached without defeating Rellana.
This route is useful for early exploration and collecting Scadutree Fragments, but it can place the player in dangerous areas before the main-story path has been established.
Alternative route: Fort of Reprimand: steps
- 01From the Castle Front area, travel south-east towards the green lowland.
- 02Find the Spiritspring near the route to the Fort of Reprimand.
- 03Use the Spiritspring to reach the fort’s upper approach.
- 04Enter the Fort of Reprimand.
- 05Defeat or bypass the fort’s defenders.
- 06Defeat Black Knight Edredd if you want the fort’s main reward.
- 07Use the rear route to emerge into southern Scadu Altus.
- 08Travel north through Moorth Ruins or east towards Bonny Village.
Suggested exploration order
This order is not mandatory. The DLC frequently rewards taking a side route first and returning to the central story later.
---
A practical route is
- 01Highroad Cross and the map fragment.
- 02The camp north of Highroad Cross.
- 03Scaduview Cross.
- 04Moorth Ruins.
- 05The cave north of Moorth Ruins.
- 06Bonny Village and Bonny Gaol.
- 07Church of the Crusade.
- 08Western Scadu Altus and the Ruined Forge of Starfall Past.
- 09Shadow Keep Main Gate.
- 10Church District and West Rampart.
- 11Specimen Storehouse.
- 12Cathedral of Manus Metyr and Count Ymir’s quest.
- 13Recluses’ River and Darklight Catacombs.
- 14Ruins of Unte and the eastern Furnace Golem.
- 15The Abyssal Woods route.
Sites of Grace directory
The broad regional listing records 32 Sites of Grace. The following directory groups them by function rather than repeating their descriptions throughout the guide.
Underground and specialised areas
The map source describes these Sites of Grace as covering the main outdoor roads, Shadow Keep interiors, Bonny Gaol, Darklight Catacombs, the forge and the cathedral.
Central roads and outdoor plateau
Underground and specialised areas
Shops and services
Scadu Altus has very few ordinary shops. The most important functional service is Count Ymir, who sells sorceries from the Cathedral of Manus Metyr before his questline reaches its hostile stage. He should not be treated as a generic merchant, since his inventory and availability are tied to progression.
Sir Ansbach can later be found in the Specimen Storehouse as part of his questline and can provide quest-related services or purchases depending on progression. The map classification lists Count Ymir as the region’s merchant and separately identifies Ansbach as a story NPC in Shadow Keep.
There is no evidence that the decorative buildings and storefronts around Bonny Village function as purchasable properties, inns or ordinary businesses.
---
Miquella’s followers
Scadu Altus is one of the main regions for the expansion’s follower questlines. Relevant characters include:
The exact presence and location of these characters changes as the player advances. Do not assume an NPC is permanently absent because they are not at an early location.
Miquella’s followers
Dryleaf Dane
Dryleaf Dane is encountered near Moorth Ruins after the player obtains the appropriate gesture from Miquella’s Cross. The encounter is a duel rather than a conventional boss fight. It leads to the Dryleaf Arts and associated equipment.
Because the encounter is quest-linked, it is better to speak to nearby NPCs and inspect Miquella’s Crosses before moving deep into Shadow Keep.
Count Ymir and Jolan
Count Ymir’s quest begins in the Cathedral of Manus Metyr. He gives the player access to a series of finger-related objectives involving the region’s finger ruins. Jolan, his Swordhand of Night, stands nearby and becomes a major combatant later in the storyline.
The quest eventually leads underground to the Finger Birthing Grounds, where the player faces Metyr, Mother of Fingers. Count Ymir becomes hostile during the late stage of the quest, and Jolan is fought in the cathedral. The regional directory records Count Ymir, Jolan and Anna as the cathedral’s principal named figures.
Fire Knight Queelign
Fire Knight Queelign appears through invasion encounters connected with churches in the DLC. His Scadu Altus encounter is associated with the Church of the Crusade. His storyline can reward equipment and ash-related items, but the order of his appearances matters.
Sir Ansbach
Sir Ansbach’s quest eventually brings him to the Specimen Storehouse in Shadow Keep. He is one of the most important NPCs to check before advancing the main story. His signs and dialogue can change after major events, including the breaking of Miquella’s Great Rune and progression through Shadow Keep.
---
The broad regional listing identifies 17 bosses or major boss-class encounters in Scadu Altus. Some are repeated field enemies rather than unique story bosses.
Main and legacy-dungeon bosses
Optional named bosses and duels
Field encounters
The four Furnace Golems should be counted as separate encounters. They are not a single boss with multiple phases. Each provides a Crystal Tear reward, although their exact arena and approach differ.
Golden Hippopotamus
The Golden Hippopotamus is fought in Shadow Keep’s Main Gate Plaza. Defeating it provides two Scadutree Fragments, making the fight especially valuable for progression. The arena is inside the keep rather than in the open field.
Messmer the Impaler
Messmer is located at the top of Shadow Keep, beyond the upper Storehouse routes and Messmer’s Dark Chamber. The encounter rewards the Remembrance of the Impaler and Messmer’s Kindling. NPC summon signs can be available outside the arena depending on quest progression.
Black Knight Edredd
Edredd is found in the Fort of Reprimand. His reward includes the Black Steel Twinblade. The fort also contains a shortcut and serves as the alternative entrance route into Scadu Altus.
Metyr, Mother of Fingers
Metyr is not reached by simply exploring the cathedral. The player must progress Count Ymir’s quest and enter the Finger Birthing Grounds. The boss rewards the Remembrance of the Mother of Fingers.
Jori, Elder Inquisitor
Jori waits at the end of Darklight Catacombs. Defeating Jori opens the route into the Abyssal Woods and rewards the Barbed Staff-Spear.
---
Field encounters
Scadutree Fragments
The regional map directory records fourteen Scadutree Fragment entries in Scadu Altus. Several are paired or obtained from bosses.
Catacombs fragment
These locations are independently listed by the interactive map, including the distinction between fixed pickups, enemy drops and boss rewards.
Outdoor and early-route fragments
Revered Spirit Ashes
The regional listing identifies six Revered Spirit Ash pickups:
The Storehouse placements are easy to miss because they are above or behind large display structures rather than on the main path. The First Floor pickup is on the enormous beast statue, while the Seventh Floor pickup is associated with the hanging ox skeleton.
Other important rewards
Loot inside caves, military camps and ruins includes weapons, armour, talismans, cookbooks, smithing materials and consumables. These should be checked against an item-specific map if a completion checklist is required, since the regional directory cited here focuses on named locations and major collectible classes rather than every minor pickup.
---
Other important rewards
| Location or encounter | Reward or progression |
|---|---|
| Fort of Reprimand | Black Steel Twinblade from Black Knight Edredd |
| Bonny Gaol | Curseblade’s Cirque from Curseblade Labirith |
| Ruined Forge of Starfall Past | Smithscript equipment and gravity-themed loot |
| Darklight Catacombs | Barbed Staff-Spear from Jori |
| Cathedral of Manus Metyr | Count Ymir sorceries and quest progression |
| Finger Birthing Grounds | Remembrance of the Mother of Fingers |
| Shadow Keep | Messmer’s Remembrance, Messmer’s Kindling and Storehouse loot |
| Nameless Mausoleum | Rakshasa’s Great Katana and Rakshasa armour |
| Moorth Ruins | Dryleaf-related progression and nearby quest rewards |
Main Gate
The main gate is guarded by Messmer’s forces and is not the only entrance. The keep’s waterways and western routes offer alternative approaches.
Main Gate: steps
- 01Approach Shadow Keep from Highroad Cross or the Scaduview road.
- 02Activate Shadow Keep Main Gate.
- 03Enter the large plaza.
- 04Defeat the Golden Hippopotamus.
- 05Collect the two Scadutree Fragments from the boss reward.
- 06Activate Main Gate Plaza.
Church District
The Church District is initially flooded. Move carefully across rooftops and elevated structures rather than treating the flooded ground as safe walking terrain.
Draining the district is a genuine progression change. It alters routes, enemy positioning and access to sections of the complex, so revisit the area afterwards.
Church District: steps
- 01Enter from Church District Entrance or Church District Highroad.
- 02Search the rooftops and upper walkways.
- 03Locate the route connected to the water-drainage mechanism.
- 04Drain the district.
- 05Return to previously inaccessible buildings.
- 06Search the Church District statue for a Scadutree Fragment.
- 07Continue through Tree-Worship Passage towards Tree-Worship Sanctum.
Specimen Storehouse
The Storehouse is a vertical dungeon with hanging displays and branching lifts.
Sir Ansbach’s location and quest interactions in the Storehouse can change with overall DLC progression. Speak to him before committing to major late-game events.
---
Specimen Storehouse: steps
- 01Begin at Storehouse, First Floor.
- 02Search the central beast statue for a Revered Spirit Ash.
- 03Climb through the Storehouse’s platforms and lifts.
- 04Check Storehouse, Fourth Floor for a Scadutree Fragment.
- 05Continue to Storehouse, Seventh Floor for another Revered Spirit Ash.
- 06Explore the Back Section and Loft for the northern route.
- 07Visit Dark Chamber Entrance.
- 08Collect the Scadutree Fragment on the stairs.
- 09Prepare for Messmer at Messmer’s Dark Chamber.
Furnace Golems
Furnace Golems patrol several roads and water approaches. They are fixed encounters, not random enemies. Their locations include the central high road, Church District Highroad, the area east of the cathedral and the Ruins of Unte.
The Ruins of Unte Furnace Golem begins dormant. The encounter requires waking it before it becomes a normal fight. The narrow terrain around some golems makes Torrent movement and positioning particularly important.
Darklight Catacombs
Darklight Catacombs is more than an optional catacomb. It is the formal route into the Abyssal Woods. The dungeon is deliberately dark and contains switches, elevation changes and misleading sightlines. Bring ranged options, a torch or lantern and enough healing for the descent.
Bonny Gaol
Bonny Gaol lies beneath Bonny Village. Its flesh-flayer enemies and vertical cells make it easy to miss side rooms. Curseblade Labirith is at the bottom. The gaol is optional but provides a useful early Scadu Altus challenge.
Finger ruins
The finger ruins are large open areas with unusual finger-related enemies and environmental hazards. They are not ordinary combat arenas and are primarily important because of Count Ymir’s questline. Visit them after speaking to Ymir rather than assuming that their main reward is found by simply defeating every enemy.
Village of Flies
The Village of Flies is a hostile settlement in the eastern region. Its path contains a Revered Spirit Ash. The area is easy to overlook because it sits away from the main road and is not presented as a normal town.
---
Scadu Altus is the region where the DLC’s central ideas become geographically visible.
The exact physical relationship between Scadu Altus and the base-game Altus Plateau should not be treated as a normal map continuation. Scadu Altus belongs to the Realm of Shadow, and its geography is presented as a concealed or displaced land rather than a directly rideable extension of the Lands Between.
---
Before leaving Scadu Altus, check that you have:
---
Can I reach Scadu Altus without defeating Rellana?
Yes. The Fort of Reprimand route provides an alternative entrance. The main story route through Castle Ensis and Rellana is more straightforward, but it is not the only way into the region.
Is Shadow Keep part of Scadu Altus?
In broad regional classifications, yes. Shadow Keep is the central legacy dungeon of Scadu Altus, although some guides list its internal districts separately for walkthrough purposes.
Is Bonny Village a normal town?
No. It is a hostile settlement and a route junction. It has important quest and exploration functions but no ordinary general shop or friendly town service.
Where does the Abyssal Woods route begin?
The route begins in Scadu Altus through Darklight Catacombs. Jori, Elder Inquisitor guards the far end of the catacombs, beyond which the player enters the separate Abyssal Woods region.
What should I do before entering Shadow Keep?
Collect the nearby Scadutree Fragments, visit Moorth Ruins and Bonny Village, speak to available NPCs and check the Church of the Crusade. The keep is accessible early, but its story events can alter NPC positions and quest states.
Is this a complete item directory?
No. This is a comprehensive directory of the region’s named areas, major bosses, Sites of Grace, principal NPCs and major DLC-specific upgrade collectibles based on the cited regional map classification. It is not a room-by-room inventory of every weapon, cookbook, talisman, crafting material or common enemy drop. Exact border assignments for Shadow Keep, Scaduview and the eastern river routes also vary between map databases.
