Note

Base game location guide. This article covers the Sealed Tunnel dungeon in the Capital Outskirts, including the tunnel itself, its boss arena and the connected exit to the Divine Tower of West Altus. It does not merge the separate Altus Tunnel, Old Altus Tunnel, Sellia Hideaway or Yelough Anix Tunnel into this location.

Overview

Sealed Tunnel is a compact but unusually deceptive mining dungeon in the south-eastern Capital Outskirts of Elden Ring. Its entrance lies at the southern end of the shallow lake outside Leyndell’s outer wall, close to the Minor Erdtree Church and the Outer Wall Phantom Tree Site of Grace. Although the first chamber appears to be a dead-end mining room, the dungeon is concealed behind several illusory walls.

The tunnel’s main reward is the Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [2], which expands the Twin Maiden Husks’ stock to include unlimited Smithing Stone [3], Smithing Stone [4] and Explosive Stone. The dungeon also ends at an Onyx Lord, whose defeat grants the Onyx Lord’s Greatsword and opens the route to the Divine Tower of West Altus. That tower is a separate location, but the Sealed Tunnel is its required approach from the Capital Outskirts.

The exterior approach

Sealed Tunnel is beneath the outer approaches to Leyndell, rather than inside the urban part of Leyndell, Royal Capital. Its entrance is at the southern end of a shallow lake outside the capital wall. The Outer Wall Phantom Tree is the most convenient starting point for a first visit. From that Site of Grace, travel south-east into the water and look for the cave opening at the lake’s far end.

The Minor Erdtree Church is another useful landmark. It stands near the same outer-wall route, and the lake containing the tunnel entrance lies nearby. The church and the Outer Wall Phantom Tree are neighbouring overworld locations, not parts of Sealed Tunnel.

Nearby but separate locations

The nearby Altus Tunnel and Old Altus Tunnel are separate mining dungeons. Their shared mining theme and similar naming can cause confusion, but they have different entrances, layouts, rewards and bosses.

Nearby but separate locations

What counts as part of Sealed Tunnel?

The Divine Tower itself is treated as a separate location. It is the dungeon’s destination and narrative connection, not an internal room of Sealed Tunnel.

For this guide, the scope includes

  1. 01
The entrance chamber and its Site of Grace.
  2. 02
The concealed mining passages beyond the first illusory wall.
  3. 03
The lift and lower mining chambers revealed by the second concealed route.
  4. 04
The treasure rooms and side passages inside the dungeon.
  5. 05
    The Onyx Lord’s boss arena.
  6. 06
The exit immediately beyond the boss, which leads towards the Divine Tower of West Altus.

Reaching the tunnel from the Altus Plateau

The dungeon does not require a key to enter. Its defining access mechanic is the use of illusory walls, not a Stonesword Key door.

The simplest route is

  1. 01
Reach the Altus Plateau by either the Grand Lift of Dectus or the Ruin-Strewn Precipice route.
  2. 02
Travel towards the outer wall of Leyndell.
  3. 03
Activate the Outer Wall Phantom Tree Site of Grace if you have not already done so.
  4. 04
Ride south-east into the shallow lake.
  5. 05
Enter the cave at the southern end of the lake.
  6. 06
Rest at the Sealed Tunnel Site of Grace.

Suggested preparation

Sealed Tunnel is not especially large, but its miners, ambush points and vertical drops can punish a rushed approach.

The miners’ armour makes slashing and light attacks less efficient than heavy or strike-based attacks. Miners can also throw stones and, in some encounters, use fire-related attacks. Their known drop table includes a chance of Smithing Stone [5] in Sealed Tunnel, but these drops are random and should not be confused with the fixed treasure rewards.

---

Sealed Tunnel does not have formally named internal districts. For navigation, it is useful to divide it into functional sections.

Entrance chamber

The first room contains the Site of Grace and appears to be the entire cave. It is deliberately misleading. Examine the wall beside the firepit and strike it to reveal the first illusory wall.

This is one of the dungeon’s most important lessons: the entrance chamber is a false endpoint. If you leave without testing the wall, you will miss the Bell Bearing, most of the dungeon and the route to the Divine Tower.

Upper mining passages

Beyond the first wall, the tunnel opens into a more conventional mining area. Look for wooden platforms, ledges and side paths containing mining materials and consumable items. The route is vertical, so check above and below the main walkway rather than following the most obvious passage only.

A second illusory wall conceals a lift or continuation route. It is possible to reach what appears to be another dead end before finding it. Test suspicious walls when the architecture suggests that a route should continue.

Lower chambers and ambush routes

The lower section contains miners and additional enemies positioned around platforms, ladders and drops. Some encounters are designed to attack from unusual angles, especially when the player descends to a lower floor without first looking across the chamber.

The dungeon’s lower route contains the fixed Bell Bearing treasure. Search alcoves near the main descent rather than assuming that the boss route is the only important path.

Boss approach

The final route leads through a mining passage into the Onyx Lord’s arena. The boss is not encountered as a roaming enemy elsewhere in the dungeon. Defeating it clears the immediate obstruction and opens the exit beyond the arena.

Divine Tower connection

After the Onyx Lord, continue through the opening behind the arena. This leads outside towards the Divine Tower of West Altus. The tower is the practical reason the dungeon remains relevant after its loot has been collected: it provides access to the location where Rykard’s Great Rune can be activated.

1. Activate the Site of Grace

Enter the cave and rest at the Sealed Tunnel Site of Grace. This is the dungeon’s only listed internal Site of Grace.

Before moving on, make sure you have enough healing and that any runes you are carrying are either spent or recoverable. The first illusory wall is close to the grace, so there is little reason to make a long exploratory trip before establishing the checkpoint.

2. Reveal the first illusory wall

From the Site of Grace, face the room’s firepit. Strike the wall beside it. The wall disappears and reveals the actual route into Sealed Tunnel.

Do not rely only on visual differences. The wall can look like ordinary rock, and the intended solution is simply to test it.

3. Search the first mining section

Proceed into the newly revealed passage and collect the visible mining materials. Deal with the miners carefully, especially those positioned on ledges or near drop-offs.

Where possible

  1. 01
Pull one miner at a time.
  2. 02
Use heavy or strike attacks against armoured targets.
  3. 03
Check upper ledges before dropping down.
  4. 04
Look for ladders and side platforms before committing to a lower route.
  5. 05
Avoid standing directly below enemies that can throw objects.

4. Find the second concealed route

Continue through the mining chambers until the path seems to end. Strike the suspicious wall to reveal the next section and its lift route.

This second discovery is the dungeon’s main structural trick. The dungeon is not a single hidden entrance followed by a straightforward cave. It uses multiple false walls to make the player repeatedly reassess apparently solid rock.

5. Collect the Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [2]

After descending into the deeper section, look for the treasure chest in an alcove near the tunnel floor. The chest contains Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [2].

Take the Bell Bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold. Offering it expands their inventory to include:

The Bell Bearing therefore has value beyond this dungeon. It changes Smithing Stone acquisition for the rest of the playthrough, allowing regular weapons to be upgraded further without relying solely on fixed overworld pickups or miner drops.

5. Collect the Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [2]

5. Collect the Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [2]
ItemAvailability after offering the Bell Bearing
Smithing Stone [3]Unlimited
Smithing Stone [4]Unlimited
Explosive StoneUnlimited

6. Explore the remaining side passages

Before entering the boss arena, revisit the lower platforms and side alcoves. Sealed Tunnel contains several consumables and upgrade materials, and its vertical design makes it easy to leave items behind.

Some materials are fixed pickups, while others are dropped randomly by miners. Treat a missing enemy drop as normal rather than as evidence that the dungeon has changed.

7. Defeat the Onyx Lord

The boss arena is at the end of the dungeon. The Onyx Lord uses gravity-based attacks and can combine ranged pressure with strong close-range strikes. Its arena is large enough to maintain distance, but the boss can punish prolonged healing or careless retreating.

The Onyx Lord in Sealed Tunnel has a listed reward of 16,000 runes and drops the Onyx Lord’s Greatsword.

8. Continue to the Divine Tower of West Altus

Once the Onyx Lord is defeated, leave through the opening behind the arena. This provides access to the Divine Tower of West Altus. The tower is not another branch of the mining dungeon, and its later interior objectives should be treated separately.

The connection is significant because the tower is the destination for activating Rykard’s Great Rune. The Sealed Tunnel itself does not award the Great Rune. It supplies the route to the tower, while the Great Rune comes from the relevant main-game boss progression.

Ordinary enemies

The commonly documented enemy types in Sealed Tunnel are:

Miners form the dungeon’s main population. They fit the location thematically and are also relevant to the dungeon’s upgrade-material economy. Their armour is more resistant to many light attacks, making stagger, strike damage and patient single-target fighting useful approaches.

The other enemies create a contrast with the mining population. Vulgar Militia can make close-range approaches dangerous, Watcher Stones provide environmental or ranged pressure, and the Iron Virgin is a much heavier threat than the ordinary miners.

Boss

The Onyx Lord is a stone-skinned gravity wielder associated with the ancient race described in the Meteorite and Onyx Lord’s Greatsword item lore. The boss in Sealed Tunnel is specifically identified as the gatekeeper to the Divine Tower of West Altus.

---

The following directory consolidates the named rewards and collectible categories associated with Sealed Tunnel. Exact individual pickup placement is best confirmed while navigating the dungeon because several items are distributed among vertical ledges and side chambers.

Boss

Fixed or major rewards

The Bell Bearing is found in a chest in the deeper tunnel section, while the Onyx Lord’s Greatsword is the boss reward. The other named items are dungeon pickups or drops recorded for the location.

Crafting and upgrade materials

The presence of a material in the dungeon does not mean every miner drops it consistently. Fixed corpse, chest and wall pickups are separate from random enemy-drop tables.

Why the Bell Bearing matters

The Bell Bearing is the most strategically valuable item in the dungeon. Once offered to the Twin Maiden Husks, it provides unlimited access to Smithing Stone [3] and [4], allowing standard weapons to be upgraded through the early and middle upgrade bands more conveniently. It also unlocks Explosive Stone for purchase.

Site of Grace

This is the dungeon’s internal checkpoint. It sits in the deceptive first chamber, before the first illusory wall.

Site of Grace

Shops and services

There are no merchants, blacksmiths or functional shops inside Sealed Tunnel.

The dungeon does, however, provide access to an external service:

The Twin Maiden Husks are not physically present in Sealed Tunnel, and the Divine Tower is not a shop or dungeon facility. They are connected progression destinations.

---

Illusory walls

The principal secret is the chain of illusory walls. At least two are essential to full completion:

The first wall is easy to miss because the entrance chamber is designed to resemble a complete small cave. The second prevents the player from treating the first revealed room as the whole dungeon.

Illusory walls: steps

  1. 01
The wall beside the firepit near the Site of Grace.
  2. 02
A further concealed wall that reveals the lift or continuation route.

Vertical navigation

The tunnel uses ladders, drops, wooden platforms and lower mining chambers. Before dropping down:

Armoured miners

Miners are more troublesome when attacked with unsuitable weapons. Light slashing attacks can bounce or deal reduced damage, while heavier attacks and strike damage are generally more reliable. Their random drops should not be used as the main reason to farm the dungeon, since the Bell Bearing gives a more dependable source of mid-tier upgrade stones.

Boss gravity attacks

The Onyx Lord’s attacks can disrupt spacing and punish healing. The safest response is usually to preserve enough room to recognise the animation, then punish the recovery rather than trying to force damage during the attack itself.

---

Sealed Tunnel is one of the game’s mining galleries, but its deeper purpose is architectural and political rather than merely economic. The tunnel passes beneath the outer capital region and opens towards the Divine Tower of West Altus, linking an apparently ordinary mining operation to one of the structures associated with the Great Runes.

The Onyx Lord reinforces that connection. Onyx Lords are ancient, stone-skinned beings associated with meteors and gravity sorcery. Their greatswords are made from golden-hued meteoric ore, and the boss’s weapon reward preserves that relationship in gameplay terms.

The dungeon’s golden, tower-like visual details also suggest that the route is more than a random mine, although the game does not provide a full explicit explanation of who built or sealed the passage. That point should be treated as environmental interpretation rather than confirmed historical text.

---

Sealed Tunnel is optional for completing the main storyline. It is nevertheless useful at several stages:

The dungeon’s main rewards are not normally permanently missable through ordinary story progression. However, leaving the area before searching the concealed rooms can make the Bell Bearing easy to overlook. The Onyx Lord’s reward is also unavailable until the boss is defeated.

There is no named NPC questline that begins inside Sealed Tunnel, and no ordinary resident or merchant is documented as living there.

Is Sealed Tunnel the same as Altus Tunnel?

No. Sealed Tunnel, Altus Tunnel and Old Altus Tunnel are separate dungeons in the wider Altus Plateau region. Their names and mining layouts are similar, but they have different entrances and rewards.

Where is Sealed Tunnel?

It is at the southern end of the shallow lake outside Leyndell’s outer wall, south-east of the Outer Wall Phantom Tree and near the Minor Erdtree Church.

What is behind the first illusory wall?

The first wall, beside the firepit near the Site of Grace, opens into the actual dungeon. Without breaking it, the player sees only the false entrance chamber.

What does Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [2] unlock?

It unlocks unlimited purchases of Smithing Stone [3], Smithing Stone [4] and Explosive Stone from the Twin Maiden Husks after the Bell Bearing is offered at Roundtable Hold.

What does the Onyx Lord drop?

The Sealed Tunnel Onyx Lord drops the Onyx Lord’s Greatsword and awards 16,000 runes according to the documented boss entry.

Does Sealed Tunnel lead directly into Leyndell?

No. It leads out towards the Divine Tower of West Altus. The tunnel is in the Capital Outskirts, outside the main urban area of Leyndell.

Can the Divine Tower of West Altus be counted as part of Sealed Tunnel?

It is connected to the tunnel, but it is a distinct location. The tunnel provides the route; the tower contains its own exterior, interior access and Great Rune activation function.
