Key takeaways
- The entrance is in Mistwood, eastern Limgrave, north-east of the Minor Erdtree and near the Mistwood Ruins.
- The lift leads to Siofra River Well Depths, not directly to Nokron Nokron becomes accessible only after Starscourge Radahn has been defeated.
- The Siofra River map fragment is found near the Hallowhorn Grounds, on a corpse at the foot of the steps leading to the temple.
- The Ancestor Spirit requires eight braziers to be lit around the lower Siofra River before its arena can be entered.
- Blaidd’s Siofra appearance is quest-related, and his position or dialogue can change depending on progress through Ranni’s storyline.
- The Deep Siofra Well is a separate exit and landmark, reached through the northern part of Siofra. It leads to a surface ravine in Dragonbarrow, Caelid, rather than to the Limgrave well building.
About this guide
Scope note: “Siofra River Well” can mean either the above-ground well building in Mistwood or the entire underground region reached through it. This guide separates those meanings. The well itself is a small entrance location. The wider Siofra River contains the river basin, Hallowhorn Grounds, Worshippers’ Woods, the Deep Siofra Well connection and routes towards Nokron. Nokron, Mohgwyn Palace and the upper Caelid exit are neighbouring or connected areas, not interchangeable names for the initial well area.
Overview
Elden Ring, base game
Elden Ring, base game
Introduction
Siofra River Well is one of Elden Ring’s earliest major revelations. From outside, it appears to be a domed stone building in eastern Limgrave, close to the Minor Erdtree in Mistwood. Inside, a lift descends an extraordinary distance into the Siofra River, an underground region with its own map, Sites of Grace, merchants, quest encounters, optional bosses and several routes that only become available later.
The entrance itself contains little beyond the lift and a small group of Claymen. Its importance lies in where it leads. The lower Siofra River is an open cavern of shallow water, ruined masonry, spirit animals and Ancestral Followers. Farther north, the region connects to an elevator leading to Caelid’s Dragonbarrow. After defeating Starscourge Radahn, another route opens into Nokron, Eternal City, which should be treated as a separate continuation rather than part of the initial well descent.
The area is optional in the base game. It is not required to reach the ending, but it is strongly connected to several substantial questlines, especially Ranni’s search for Nokron and Fia’s route to Deeproot Depths.
1.1 The Siofra River Well entrance
The Siofra River Well is the above-ground building in Mistwood. It is a named location in Limgrave and consists primarily of:
This is the location most accurately described as “the well”. It should not be confused with the much larger Siofra River region beneath it.
1.2 Siofra River
Siofra River is the lower underground region reached after the lift. It includes the initial river basin, Worshippers’ Woods, the lower Hallowhorn Grounds and the northern route towards the Deep Siofra Well. Depending on the map or guide being used, the region is also discussed alongside Nokron because the two areas occupy the same broad underground world space.
The lower region has its own map fragment and several Sites of Grace. It is not a conventional linear dungeon. You can explore in multiple directions, although some paths are deliberately blocked by progression, locked lifts or platforming routes.
1.3 Nokron, Eternal City
Nokron, Eternal City is a distinct subregion. It is inaccessible from the lower Siofra River at the start of the game. Defeating Starscourge Radahn causes a meteor to fall near Limgrave, creating the route into Nokron.
It is therefore misleading to describe every Siofra map location as part of the well itself. The well is the entrance; Siofra River is the lower region; Nokron is the later upper continuation.
1.4 Separate neighbouring or connected locations
Regional maps commonly list Siofra River, Nokron, Night’s Sacred Ground, the two Hallowhorn Grounds and the Siofra Aqueduct as separate points or subareas.
---
The following should be kept separate
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Deep Siofra Well | a northern Siofra landmark and lift to Caelid’s Dragonbarrow. |
| Siofra Aqueduct | a Nokron area containing the Valiant Gargoyles and a coffin route to Deeproot Depths. |
| Deeproot Depths | a separate underground region reached through the Siofra Aqueduct or the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. |
| Mohgwyn Palace | a separate underground region, sometimes grouped with Siofra on broad underground maps, but not reached through the Siofra River Well. |
| Ainsel River | another underground river system with its own entrances and progression. |
From Limgrave
The well is in Mistwood, near the Minor Erdtree. From the Third Church of Marika, travel south and then south-west into Mistwood, or approach from the Mistwood Ruins. Look for a large circular stone structure with a domed roof.
The building is conspicuous once you are near the Minor Erdtree. Its position is north-east of the tree, and the lift is inside the structure rather than in an open shaft.
Recommended approach
The lift journey is unusually long, but it is safe once started. The entrance has no conventional dungeon boss and no requirement such as a Stonesword Key.
---
Recommended approach: steps
- 01Activate the nearby Site of Grace before entering Mistwood.
- 02Watch for Rune Bears and other wildlife in the forest.
- 03Enter the domed building.
- 04Descend using the lift.
- 05Activate Siofra River Well Depths immediately after arriving.
- 06Rest before exploring, because the first underground stretch contains ranged enemies and several drops around ruined structures.
Exterior ruins and Claymen
The upper ruins around the well are inhabited by Claymen. They are slow but durable, and their attacks can be awkward in the confined spaces around the stonework. The area is not intended as a large combat dungeon. Most players can simply enter the building and descend.
The exterior is worth checking if you want to explore every item route. A small platforming path around the ruins leads to a scarab carrying Oracle Bubbles, a sorcery. The acquisition route involves climbing around the ruined structure and dropping onto a lower rock rather than following the main entrance route.
Named entries: entrance area
The Minor Erdtree and Mistwood Ruins are neighbouring Limgrave landmarks, not internal parts of the underground Siofra River.
---
The underground view initially feels much larger than the entrance suggests. The cavern is divided into a broad, watery basin and several raised areas connected by ruined pillars, cliffs, teleporters and lifts.
The ceiling resembles a night sky. The apparent stars are part of the region’s visual identity and help distinguish Siofra from the more industrial or subterranean architecture of other underground areas.
Named entries: entrance area
4.1 Siofra River Well Depths
This is the first underground landing area. The Site of Grace is close to the bottom of the lift. From here, the main route leads east and then towards the wider river basin.
The first enemies are generally manageable, but the area introduces the region’s characteristic dangers:
4.2 Siofra River Bank
The river bank overlooks the lower Hallowhorn Grounds. This is the most useful central staging point for the Ancestor Spirit route. The map fragment is nearby, and the large horned remains can be seen in the temple.
The river bank also serves as a crossroads:
4.3 Hallowhorn Grounds, lower area
The lower Hallowhorn Grounds are a ruined temple containing the remains of a large horned creature. The arena is inactive until eight braziers have been lit around the lower Siofra River.
After all eight flames are lit, interact with the remains inside the temple to enter the Ancestor Spirit boss fight. The boss is optional and does not block the main story.
The map fragment is found on a corpse at the bottom of the steps leading up to the temple. This placement is easy to miss because the temple itself draws attention away from the corpse below it.
4.4 Worshippers’ Woods
Worshippers’ Woods is a forested section of the lower Siofra River. It contains the Worshippers’ Woods Site of Grace, the Abandoned Merchant and several Ancestral Followers.
The trees and broken columns make line of sight unreliable. Bow-wielding followers can attack from elevated positions while melee followers wait among the vegetation. Take time to identify archer positions before crossing open ground.
The Abandoned Merchant occupies a cliffside alcove near the Site of Grace. He provides a useful shop in the underground region, including the Nomadic Warrior’s Cookbook [17], a Larval Tear and other supplies. The merchant’s stock should be checked before leaving, particularly if you are planning a respec or want to expand your crafting options. The merchant is a functional NPC shop, not merely a decorative stall.
4.5 Northern Siofra and the Deep Siofra Well
The northern part of the lower river eventually reaches a lift requiring two Stonesword Keys. This lift leads upwards to the Deep Siofra Well in Dragonbarrow, Caelid.
This is a connection rather than a second entrance to the same well. The surface destination is dangerous, with powerful enemies and a hostile landscape. It is nevertheless the route to the Great-Jar area and the Great-Jar’s Arsenal talisman challenge.
The lift is optional. If you are only exploring Siofra for the Ancestor Spirit or Ranni’s quest, you can leave it for later.
---
The following named Sites of Grace belong to the lower Siofra and its immediate continuation:
Below the Well is in the northern lower region, before the elevator towards the Deep Siofra Well. It is not the same checkpoint as Siofra River Well Depths.
Nokron has its own separate Sites of Grace, including locations associated with the Mimic Tear route, Ancestral Woods and Night’s Sacred Ground. Site listings distinguish these from the lower Siofra checkpoints.
---
Abandoned Merchant
The Abandoned Merchant is the main permanent merchant in the lower Siofra River. He is found in a cliffside alcove near Worshippers’ Woods.
His presence is easy to overlook because the alcove is not on the most direct route through the forest. Look for a side path near the Worshippers’ Woods Site of Grace and search the cliff wall rather than the centre of the woodland.
Blaidd
Blaidd appears in Siofra as part of Ranni’s questline. He is usually found on a high ledge overlooking the river, near the route associated with the search for Nokron. His dialogue changes according to the player’s progress.
Speak to him when he is present, then report back to Ranni’s circle of characters as appropriate. Siofra is not the final stage of Blaidd’s story, and completing or advancing Ranni’s quest will move the character elsewhere.
The important distinction is that Blaidd is a quest visitor, not a permanent Siofra resident. He is not a shopkeeper, boss or faction leader in this region. Guides for Ranni’s quest consistently place his Siofra meeting before the route into Nokron is opened.
Ancestral Followers
The Ancestral Followers are the dominant inhabitants of the lower Siofra River. They are spiritual hunters associated with the cavern’s wildlife, ruins and horned ancestral imagery.
They are not conventional soldiers enforcing a ruler’s law. The region has no formal guard force or law-enforcement faction. The Followers function as territorial inhabitants and religious or ancestral guardians.

Common enemies
Claymen
Claymen appear around the well entrance and in underground ruins. They are slow, but their health and unusual attack timing can punish careless close-range attacks.
Ancestral Followers
These are the primary lower-region enemies. Archers are especially dangerous because they can remain outside melee range while other Followers occupy the path.
Giant spectral archers
The northern and upper routes contain particularly dangerous spectral archers. Their arrows can stagger or kill lightly armoured characters, especially when crossing open ground. Use pillars, ruins and terrain as cover, and avoid fighting them in a straight run unless you have no alternative.
Wildlife
Siofra contains spiritual versions of animals such as rats, sheep and other cavern wildlife. Some can be ignored; others attack in groups or conceal themselves in vegetation.
Ancestor Spirit
The Ancestor Spirit is the principal boss of the lower Siofra River. It is encountered in the lower Hallowhorn Grounds after lighting eight braziers.
The fight rewards patience rather than constant aggression. The boss moves through the air, creates distance and uses sweeping attacks. Its health recovery ability is particularly important. When it heals, interrupting the sequence is often more valuable than continuing ordinary attacks.
The encounter is optional and does not determine whether the player can continue through the main story. The eight-brazier requirement is a fixed environmental activation sequence, not a random event.
Separate bosses in connected areas
These are not bosses of the initial Siofra River Well or lower Siofra:
The Regal Ancestor Spirit belongs to the upper Nokron side of the underground region and requires a different brazier sequence from the lower Ancestor Spirit. Do not combine the two activation puzzles.

Boss directory: lower Siofra scope
Items inside or immediately associated with the well
The Oracle Bubbles route is a fixed collectible route rather than a random drop. Enemy drops such as Claymen’s Harpoon are random or chance-based and should not be described as guaranteed pickups.
Items inside or immediately associated with the well
| Item | Area | Acquisition |
|---|---|---|
| Oracle Bubbles | Exterior ruins of Siofra River Well | Reach the lower rock route around the ruins and defeat the scarab |
| Siofra River Map | Lower Siofra, Hallowhorn Grounds approach | Take it from the corpse below the temple steps |
| Larval Tear | Near the Abandoned Merchant | Purchase from the merchant |
| Nomadic Warrior’s Cookbook [17] | Abandoned Merchant | Purchase from the merchant |
| Remembrance of the Ancestor | Ancestor Spirit | Defeat the optional boss |
Brazier sequence
There are eight fixed braziers in the lower Siofra area. Lighting all eight activates the lower Hallowhorn Grounds encounter.
A practical method is to begin at Siofra River Bank and work outwards in a clockwise or counter-clockwise sweep. The important point is not the exact order, which is flexible, but avoiding repeated crossings of the central water.
Some braziers are exposed beside paths, while others are watched by Followers or positioned near ruins. Bring enough healing to survive ranged attacks and use Torrent where the terrain permits it.
Crafting and merchant supplies
The Abandoned Merchant is the region’s main service provider. His stock is fixed rather than procedural. Enemy drops, wildlife materials and crafting resources obtained from the environment are subject to ordinary enemy or gathering rules.
No conventional blacksmith, upgrade bench, inn or property system exists in Siofra River.

Route A: first visit and map
- 01Enter the Siofra River Well in Mistwood.
- 02Descend and activate Siofra River Well Depths.
- 03Follow the main route into the river basin.
- 04Reach Siofra River Bank.
- 05Collect the Siofra River Map from the corpse below the Hallowhorn Grounds.
- 06Activate Worshippers’ Woods.
- 07Find the Abandoned Merchant in the cliffside alcove.
- 08Explore the lower basin and light the eight braziers.
- 09Return to Hallowhorn Grounds and enter the Ancestor Spirit arena.
- 10Continue north only if you want the Deep Siofra Well or the Dragonbarrow connection.
Route B: Ranni and Blaidd
The well is therefore an early scouting location for Ranni’s plot, but it is not itself the entrance to Nokron before Radahn’s defeat.
Route B: Ranni and Blaidd: steps
- 01Begin or advance Ranni’s questline.
- 02Travel to Siofra River through the Limgrave well.
- 03Find Blaidd on the elevated ledge overlooking the region.
- 04Exhaust his dialogue.
- 05Return to the relevant quest characters when instructed.
- 06Defeat Starscourge Radahn when the quest requires access to Nokron.
- 07Enter Nokron through the newly created crater route, not through the original well lift.
Route C: Deep Siofra Well and Caelid
This route is optional and substantially more dangerous than the initial Siofra descent. It is better attempted after gaining stronger equipment or after deciding that the Great-Jar’s Arsenal challenge is worth the risk.
---
Route C: Deep Siofra Well and Caelid: steps
- 01Travel north through the lower Siofra River.
- 02Activate Below the Well.
- 03Find the elevator sealed by an imp statue.
- 04Use two Stonesword Keys.
- 05Ride the lift to the surface.
- 06Enter Dragonbarrow and proceed towards the Great-Jar area if desired.
Ranged ambushes
The main tactical danger is not the average melee Follower but the combination of archers and terrain. A melee enemy may hold your attention while an archer attacks from a ruin or elevated ledge.
Falls and misleading terrain
The underground scale makes distances difficult to judge. Ruined pillars can look climbable when they are not, and shallow ledges can conceal fatal drops. Treat every broken edge as a potential fall until you have identified a safe route.
The Ancestor Spirit’s healing
If the boss begins restoring health, stop attacking from a poor position and reposition quickly. The fight becomes much longer if healing is allowed repeatedly. Spirit Ashes can help draw attention away from the player, but the boss’s mobility means summons may struggle to maintain contact.
Progression confusion
The most common navigation mistake is assuming that the original well leads directly to Nokron. It does not. The route into Nokron is unlocked by the post-Radahn world change.
Likewise, the lower Ancestor Spirit and the Regal Ancestor Spirit are separate encounters with separate activation sequences.
---
Siofra River is built around a culture of ancestral memory, horned animals and a civilisation that predates the current order of the Lands Between. The Ancestral Followers and their worship of horned life contrast with the Golden Order’s emphasis on Erdtree authority and conventional life and death.
The Hallowhorn Grounds present the remains of a colossal horned creature as a sacred object. The braziers and the spirit boss suggest that the creature is not merely an animal corpse but part of a ritual tradition in which life, death and natural regeneration are treated as linked processes.
Nokron expands this theme in a different direction. Its Eternal City architecture, Nox inhabitants and connection to the Fingerslayer Blade reveal a more direct relationship with ancient civilisations and opposition to the Greater Will. Siofra is therefore not just a scenic underground region. It is the lower, more pastoral and animistic counterpart to Nokron’s ruined urban world.
The region also reinforces Elden Ring’s vertical geography. Its position beneath Limgrave is not a simple basement. The underground areas form a separate world network with their own maps, lifts, rivers, cities and long-distance connections.
---
Is Siofra River Well a dungeon?
Not in the usual sense. The well building is a small entrance location with a lift. The area beneath it is a large open underground region rather than a compact legacy dungeon.
Do I need to defeat a boss to use the well?
No. The lift is available as soon as you reach the building.
Why can I not reach Nokron from the well?
Nokron is locked behind the world-state change caused by defeating Starscourge Radahn. Before then, explore the lower Siofra River, speak with Blaidd if relevant and collect the map and Ancestor Spirit rewards.
Where is the Siofra River map?
It is on a corpse near the Hallowhorn Grounds, at the bottom of the steps leading up to the temple.
How do I activate the Ancestor Spirit?
Light all eight braziers in the lower Siofra River, then interact with the remains in the lower Hallowhorn Grounds.
Is the Deep Siofra Well the same place as the Siofra River Well?
No. The Limgrave well is the entrance. The Deep Siofra Well is a northern Siofra elevator that leads to Dragonbarrow in Caelid.
Is Mohgwyn Palace part of Siofra River?
It is a separate underground region. Some broad maps group it with other underground areas for convenience, but it has its own entrance routes, map, Sites of Grace, NPCs and boss progression.
